Off Topic / Re: Unlikely musical crossover.......

There are stacks of good songs on the American Recordings series. Hurt stands out so much because the original seems to be yet another tiresome, self-pitying NiN dirge yet, when invest with Cash's gravitas it sounds like the Moses breaking the tablets.

My other favourite is his version of Bonnie Prince Billy's "I See a Darkness." It's an excellent song to start with, but Cash's word-weary vocal gives it another layer and it's extraordinary to hear Will Oldham harmonising on the chorus: he can actually sing when he wants to!!

I don't think his versions of One or The Mercy Seat - good as they are - surpass the originals, but one of the highlights of Zooropa is the song he sings with dear old Bongo.

Now, from what I remember of the show itself, it was a bit pants...

WHAT?! You, sir, are a cad and a bounder. Ulysses was truly zarjaz.

When it comes to tunes, you want the interminable crescendo of this.

Did Cruise insist on it (and how did he go about it?).

Almost certainly. Watch The Three Musketeers and try and find a scene where the rest are looking down on him...

Suggestions / Re: Future 2000AD trades - suggest...

Definitely Ace Garp.

The main thing I'd like to see is more stuff from the Megazine reprinted, particularly the Dredd stories. I think Rebellion are missing a trick here: on the assumption that only half the 2000AD readers also get the Meg, then there's a ready made audience for genuine, unseen Wagner Dredd.

I'm not keen on artist-specific collections, as you end up with either multiple reprints of the same strip and/or stuff that never sees the light of day.

I'd definitely snap up a Harry 20 EE, but I don't think I'd stretch to a TPB. The rule of thumb here is: if the reprint costs less than the bus fare back to my mum's then it's worth it!

Some of the Crisis stuff would be interesting although is that all creator owned?

I've been buying the TPB, so hopefully the last of those will be out quick smart. It's pretty good: quite a mix of different stories and art in it. Do you have some sort of Guardian wallchart telling you what order to read them in?

I was wondering the same about Case Files 06. It's round about this time I need to start giving out present ideas to folk.

Surely the third option should read: "I don't know, I've never Kippled."

Anyway, I think he's ace.

I decided to create my own variant: classic books in six words. Here's what I've come up with so far.

Lord of the Rings: "Hairy footed lad gets the finger out."

Paradise Lost: "We rose. He fell. Oh Hell!"

The Bible: "We made it all up. Amen."

Watchmen: "Watch out, there's a hero about."

Strikes me you could combine this with the art thread.

"Old One Eye versus Oola Blint."

Margaret Atwood in not flying off the handle at being called a sci-fi writer shocker!

Thought Eileen Gunn's was the best.

So dissatisfied with his work was he that when it was returned to him he had a little bonfire in the back yard.

SO how much do you think I'll get for this "original" page on e-bay?
