Off Topic / Halo Jones Time
13 January, 2024, 10:11:57 PM
It's Saturday night and I'm doing nothing in particular and scrolling through FB vids when someone starts talking about the Einstein theory of time. They mention Interstellar where they go to a planet with heavy gravity and come back to find time slowed time down for them.

Am I right in thinking Alan Moore shared this concept with Halo Jones on the planet of heavy gravity in which a war was played out? Did she not come back to find a world moved on?

If so, how many times has 2000ad thoroughly accomplished grafting in some pretty futuristic concepts into the pages of venerable comic before mainstream audiences were breaking down such fascinating concepts in everyday life. Changing their worlds completely where as a 2000ad reader will invariably shrug off the notion as something already grappled with in the 1980s.

Sorry to bother the board but I ashamedly do not have a copy of halo jones at hand atm.

This is an open thankyou note to Tharg for his choice and gift.

Apparently edging back towards the light after a dark tunnel of Millar etc, of CaseFiles 20 and previous perhaps, according to board members.

Rad Blood, Conspiracy of Silence, and the Time Machine sure feel like a more classic Dredd universe adopting, adapting to a new comics environment. Shaking off it's more bolshi and stubborn armour that has got it thru careering the previous wave of comic activism of that time, I get the sense of shock tactics and extremes turning towards more fantastical sensationalism again.

NB: Who is Chris Standly and what happened to him?

Whether by coincidence or by design, the similarities to the stories in CaseFiles 21 reflect the ideology going on in my November art comp entry. Either I've imposed this idea or it is there. Notably, the Judge Death story. This is definitely the style I wanted to portray in Necromancer and Toad. Not only deeply satirical Dredd having a sideways tilted look at society as a whole but at it's own odd creations. Script is by one of the co-creators of Death, John Wagner.

This seems to be an era for embracing the satire and steering it in as many directions as it could go.

It arrived Saturday the 7th and I've only got to the outrageously adorable Wagner/Gibson/Frame Judge Death: The True Story. It's a two part-er. Heh.

And I must mention the Friday crossover finishing that week that was before above tale. Was there a particular reason for this story?

Anyway thanks 2000ad. Always wanted to post you a winner Tharg. Be it an LED, £5-£10, or just an appraisal, the joy is you are always changing.

Other Reviews / Aquila and the New Bloods; Thoughts?
02 February, 2013, 05:29:40 AM
New characters have appeared on the pages of 2000ad recently and I was wondering how readers are quantifying them at these early stages.

For me, I have an interest in Aquila, and I keep returning to the thought, "Aquila; Slaine for the 21st Century?"
But is that an unfair comparison? As there are not so many soap opera elements of Aquila's beginning.

And does this, along with what I think, far too deep, a resonance with biblical stories, weaken the character. Maybe more time is needed and, as with Azreal, I will get the trades for a full understanding.

As it is, as a non-subscriber it's difficult to keep up with all the subtexts I know these writers are capable of.

It would be nice if readers gave their pointers on how the "new bloods" are making changes.

News / Halo gets new introduction
10 January, 2013, 02:26:27 PM
http://www.2000adonline.com/news/10-01-2013/lauren_on_halo/

I'm so glad this is getting a re-release and with a shiny new endorsement from a female novelist, who herself has produced some cutting edge ideas on the female role in fiction.

I recently gave my copy to my daughter on her 15th birthday and she review it in satisfied tones. We don't meet up as much as I'd like so it's a joy when she likes something well enough to restore some of her memories of it with me. We talked about Glyph of course but she mainly enthused about the bomb that is used on the Hoop. And the shopping mall, heh. Kids eh?

A budding author herself I hope she will see the importance of the story of Halo not only the character and story but its event in comics, as Lauren pointedly remarks upon.

This Black Atlantic Tunnel;

How long has it existed?
Is it still in cannon?
What's it's history?
Does it bear into story-lines that often?
Is it under used in the Dreddverse in popular opinion?

Could it be used as a V for Vendetta (filum) style attack on the Mega-cities?

Where does it connect from/to?

Help! / Shopping p/w problemo
18 April, 2012, 04:31:51 PM
In a wormhole indeed.

On trying to pick up a digi copy of last weeks prog, I'm constantly asked for a password. They are usually NASA difficult to remember and usually I save one in my PM but a lot of the time I have to request a renewal.

Monday I asked for one. No response and still waiting to shop. Now new prog is out.

Help please?

General / 2000ad Cold Cases
10 February, 2012, 09:04:42 AM
Newsarama are doing a "Cold Cases" thing over on their site of Marvel and DC characters I should guess.

NewsaramaToptenCountdown

It was immediately apparent that 2000ad must have a few. There's the Gordon Rennie stuff in Dredd and Si Spurrier's Domino covert agent slipped off the radar as soon as she blipped onto it.

And it states something too, about titles that we may have been waiting to see the light of day of. There must be a few.

John Wagner or Pat Mills?

Feel free to ask similar sorts of dialogue questions here. But an answer first would be nice.

Yes. I'm watching the awesome Robocop. The Dredd predecessor. (Argue amongst yourselves.) It hit me that I love the urban pacifier so much but I'm not that well verse with the equally lovable Mechanismos brought about beneath the rule of the effervescent McGruder. So many cross-over art contests, I have missed the chance to re-invent the fight off of the new century, the decision to begin a new topic (rare) came to mind. Who would kick ass this Christmas? A troop of  Mechs or the leading law enforcement design ED209?

Characters from the 2000ad archives.

You know when you're out and about and you talk about 2000ad with friends who may have heard or randomly picked up the prog or meg? Who is the character the remember the most.

Most often I get;

Ooh tha Barbarian who says "Kiss my Ass." He's cool. I inform them it's Slaine and it's Kiss my Axe. And they say; Yeah he's cool. And that gruesome dude? Slough Fegg. To which the happily grimace in enjoyable mermory.

But my top 5 most remembered is;

Dredd
Slaine
Rogue Trooper
Ace Garp
Anderson

Any surprises out there?

I've seen it teasing me on my shopping route. But no specifics. Does Gordon know when it goes official?

This is a perfectly reasonable postcard request.

General / Who are the Holocaust Squad?
21 March, 2011, 09:01:41 PM
How popular are they?

I've read about them before somewhere 2000ad related and now in the Meg relating the Mongoose figures. I know of the Riot Judges but who are these Holocaust lot?  And did they make a big splash? Or are they classic (really old) characters?
