Off Topic / Reading all of my old posts
25 June, 2018, 04:37:50 PM
I've been reading all of my old posts (helpfully organised in my profile) and it's a strange mixture of complimenting peoples work, posting art, and aggressively arguing about random things. It's quite surprising if not terribly insightful looking at everything I have ever posted here in isolation.

I need to either calm down the arguments or increase the hostility in the compliments to bring some kind of consistency.

I am seriously considering trying to make a Rogue Trooper theamed one shot fanzine. The FQP guys did one a few years ago, not that I want to tread on their toes, but it's probably about time for another one.

This fairly vain post is just a collection of my efforts for the art comp.

Creative Common / My Thought bubble portfolio review
07 November, 2016, 11:01:50 AM
I thought this might be interesting to some one.

I had a go at the Though Bubble portfolio script and it didn't go particularly well.

The review was (to paraphrase) that my figure work was stiff and sometimes off and my inking could do with some work. Criticisms I agree with.

Even though I decided about a month before that I was going to have a go at it I still had to rush after real world pressures and short notice work ate up a big chunk of my free time and when I rush my figure work gets stiff, reference goes out the window and my inking suffers.

With more time I could have produced much better work, BUT that's unrealistic. Comics have deadlines and if my work suffers under pressure that's something I need to work on. The main reason my work has suffered under pressure is because I have drawn so little over the last 5 years. Until this year I had produced maybe 6 -8 pages of sequential art a year and that is just not enough.

If I want consistency and speed I need to practice until it's second nature. I would need to practice until any deadline crunch or dip in form didn't brink out my old weaknesses because even if I produced a superb sample script right now I wouldn't be able to follow it up with any kind of commission to a short deadline. There was a real value to setting myself a task with a deadline and completing it and showing it even though I wasn't happy with it. The feed back itself was also useful, and as with all feedback I have put some thought into whether I agree with it and what lessons I can learn.

I'm posting the pages bellow, the first two pages I spent more time drawing and although there are still problems, the problems get worse as the strip goes on and the deadline gets closer.

Hello, take a seat... no come back and put the seat down, you know full well that's not what I meant.

Her at MFB (http://www.massacreforboys.co.uk/) we are currently putting together  the forth issue of our full colour boys own anthology comic. We have several fine scripts and no one to draw them. If you are interested you can let us know at chris@massacreforboys.co.uk or steve@massacreforboys.co.uk depending on your preference for names that start with either a C or an S

We need some help colouring a few 6 page strips for the next issue of Massacre for boys in colour. We have two strips at the moment in need of someone handy with pixels, one illustrated by the venerable Bolt 01 and one by talented newcomer Fat Bobby.

OK, I have a problem, my scripts read better in script form than they do in comic form. It's not that they turn out badly and it's a problem with the writing not the art work but I'm loosing something in the transition from script to strip.

Any one else have this problem?

Hello all of you creative people!
For the last few years my brother and I have been producing small press comics under the umbrella of Massacre For Boys. We currently produce the classic war comic inspired 'Walking Wounded' and the classic British boys' comic inspired anthology 'Massacre For Boys'.

http://www.massacreforboys.co.uk/

http://massacreforboys.blogspot.com/

We would like to make the Massacre For Boys anthology a more regular comic but to do that we would need more contributors. Writters, Artists, colourists, letterers, the lot!
MFB presents strips can be about pretty much anything, we have had war strips, sci-fi strips, a football strip, Edwardian paranormal detectives, super hero strips, even a strip about an animal hat maker. Some funny some 'serious' but all with a classic UK comics flavour.

Would anyone hear be interested in contributing to something like that?

Creative Common / Small Press colourist WANTED!
30 December, 2011, 03:50:57 PM
Hello you talented talented people! I have a 6 page Edwardian supernatural detective story in need of colouring for the latest issue of Massacre for boys in colour. Written by Chris Denton and drawn by some chump called Steven this fine example of a small press comic strip is in desperate need of a lick of paint and a polish. People with Elephant like memories may even remember the Locked room from it's appearance in the magazines much missed independent British comics section.

Let me know if you are interested.

Hi all, I have found myself  up against a crushing dead line (for crushing deadline read taken on to many projects and not been quick enough doing them)

I have two 6 page stories that need a lick of colour, both drawn by me. I don't suppose any one would like to help an overambitious small press guy out?

PM me if you are interested.

I was just poking about on my old websites and I found this embarrassing yet strangely charming Judge Dredd strip I drew about 8 or 9 years ago. Both my drawing and my colouring have moved along quite a lot since then and I'm man enough to show my less then perfect passed work! (if I waited for my work to be perfect I would never show any one anything.)

I was reading the 1993 (I think) Judge Dredd yearbook last night and the lead colour Dredd Strip got me thinking. It was competently illustrated and the colouring was fairly nice but it was drawing in colour posing as being fully painted.  I think the fully painted work from the 90's has a probably slightly undeserved bad reputation. Sure there was a lot of bad stuff and Bisley want to be artist were 2 a penny but there was also a lot of rich, detailed, vibrant and wonderful looking artwork. The problem as I see it is that because when you are presented with fully painted artwork it raises your expectations, it promises something special.  A lot of the artist produced good or proficient if uninspired work, some produced exceptionally good work and some appeared to be completely out of their depth.

I thought as I had just compiled a top 10 Dredd artist list why not compile a top 10 painted strip artist list.
