Title: Batman : Arkham Asylum
Post by: bluemeanie on 29 June, 2009, 11:09:20 PM

Well as I dont think anyone else has, I thought I'd start a thread on this.

This has to be my most anticipated game EVER. I even shelled out £700 on a gaming spec pc so I'd be ready for it! Granted my machine was well old and needed upgrading anyway, but still...

Looks absolutely stunning and the stealth gameplay seems kickass. I recently played the Batman Begins Gamecube game on my wii which I thought was a lot better than the general concensus, but this looks almost TOO good. Released August 28th, actually considering booking a few days off.

I will buy this, but I think the new Splinter Cell makes it seem like a fairly run of the mill stealth em' up in comparison.

based on i have read and watched at this point. its  a must buy.

great art, superb graphics, game play looks outstanding. good story line if the reviews are to be believed.
on my list for my august purchase, the summer has an outstanding line up of games this year doesnt it. which is not the normal run of things.

The box set thing woulda been more tempting if I didnt already have an imported razor edged batarang

So far what I've seen of the gameplay hasn't blown me away, looks like it might be fairly button mashy. The look and style has me very impressed though, the Joker looks so damn cool I know I'm gonna buy this regardless.

Don't know if i am going to get it for the Xbox 360 or Ps3, i prefer playing on my xbox but the Ps3 version lets you play as the Joker......

Just seen that on a trailer. No Joker option on the XBox version! Bastards... what's the point of only allowing that on one platform? Still buying it the morning it comes out, mind... I doubt I could give an impartial review of it. I have an emulator of the Spectrum 128 version and it's still addictive.

The good news - PC demo is out. I've downloaded, installed... and its waiting for when I get home tonight

the bad news.... yesterday they announced the PC version of this is going back ANOTHER MONTH!!   >:(

http://play.tm/news/26032/batman-arkham-asylum-delayed-on-pc/

Yeah, I know long term it means I get a better game to replay over and over again. Short term though I am one pissed off welsh bloke. This was a day of release game for me, now I'm gonna miss the initial buzz when it comes out and everyone is talking about how good it (hopefully) is.

Played through this (very) short demo a couple of times now and I have to say, it's lovely! As we've all seen from the promotional stuff, the graphics are wonderful and the atmosphere is great.

It starts off a little generic beat 'em up, really reminding me of the Watchmen game, especially as the settings were fairly similar. However, the second part of the demo is like a delicious game of cat and mouse with you picking off terrified crims at will, in a variety of spectacular ways (inverse takedown is my particular fave.)

Really looking forward to the full game now!

Decent enough demo, but still too many buttons in use.  I suggest the following:

Liked the demo a lot, although it does feel a bit too "automated". It's definitely not a lazy procession of QTEs but it could get into a rinse repeat formula. Reckon the boss fights could make or break the game.

Played it on the pc....

I had very high expectations, they've been met. Absolutely loved it.

Post by: radiator on 08 August, 2009, 01:26:14 AM
Thought it was quite good. A bit repetitive maybe, and I'm finding the steroidal, Macfarlane-esque art direction really quite ugly and unappealing - I'd much rather they'd have gone for something fresher and more expressive - like the wonderful 90's cartoon series. The combat feels very 'Zach Snyder' which could wear thin pretty quick.

Still a lot better than usual licensed fare, though.

Odd that this game has been made, but there's still no Dark Knight game.
Title: Re: Batman : Arkham Asylum
Post by: GordonR on 08 August, 2009, 11:46:08 AM
The Dark Knight game got canned, for reasons never known.  Its existence wasn't even confirmed until Gary Oldman mentioned that he had recorded dialogue for it.

Oh that demo was good...

the combat system looks bit like Prince of Persia Sands of Time

glad they used the grabber from Batman cartoon...

and sorry but how hot is Harley Quinn in it!

I take it most people got that Riddler trophy in the orangey vent right at the start of the demo and the one in the Zzazz bit. I noticed a couple of orangey vents suspended in the ceilings, anyone know of we can break into those?

Post by: bluemeanie on 10 August, 2009, 08:49:05 AM
Yeah, I got the Riddler trophies. Have you all checked out the Joker audio tapes on his stats page as well?

Couple of cool things I noticed:

1 - the cape move. Middle mouse click on the pc.Uses the tip of his cape to blind enemies. Very cool.

2 - When the Joker is doing the speech on the monitor at the start I threw a batarang at it. Shattered the screen but it still kept playing, although fragmented. Thats a nice graphical touch and shows the levels of detail they are putting in.

3 - Upsideown takedown of bad guy. Swing across room. Wait till other thugs underneath. Cut rope with batarang. 2 for 1.

4 - Ramping up the fear. When you are in the last big room taking out the guys there, mess around with the last one for a while. He totally loses his shit and starts firing randomly and panicking. The whole intimidation thing was a large factor in my love for the Batman Begins game. They've taken it to another level here.

And if you think Harley was hot... have you seen Ivy??

This game is BRILLIANT. I played it nearly all day yesterday (I went to bed at 2:30am) and I still haven't completed it.

It's every bit as atmospheric as Bioshock and there's LOADS there for the Batfan - things like Harvey Dent's cell, the penguin's umbrellas, the calendar killer's (or whatever he was called) cell and masses more. The tapes you find of the Arkham inmates being 'treated' are amazing, really scary some of 'em!

Right, I'm off to play it now!

After finally getting the PC Demo to work. Thanks to my father's recent purchase of a new computer.

At first first it didn't work even on his, but tryied it second time the next day before it was going to wipe it off and it fired up smoothly, but just little bit slow.

Now I'm really impressed with the game...the visuals superb, however drearly the colouring which is atleast of Gotham city.

The interior lighting of the Asylum, the long cluttered corridors. Reminds me of 'Dooom Three', comeing to think of it now, but also of that creepyness I found tobe vital componetof the first Alin film. The dimly lite, sometime flickering  corridors of the Nostromo space mining vessel.

I've played the demo three times getting a slightly different experience each time as I got more accustomed to the controls.

On my father's computer the Batman does walk and move painfully slow --thinking this was due to my father's choice of computerbeing less big on games--- but it pays off when he starts fighting. As you can take time to almost leisurely strike at one goon, while almost instantanously counter attacking the one that just squared off behind you. Although it feels like the computer is doing the fighting for you at times. Particulally when the camera zooms in on the finishing move. Which seems all the more autonmous.

Of course most fighting games are really....

I guess.

I love the way the cape ripples out behind him and the way this allows Batman to exercise his pseudo-count dracula signature waving of his cape in a vaguely Spanish bull-fighter fashion to misdirect opponents. Yeah, I tried out that thing with clicking the wheel on the mouse controller as the cape will temporilly blind them.

Some things I discovered, the batman will perform a tiger roll while tapping the spacebar once while running. This will become wicked head oever front flip if you tapp the space bar twwice while running head on at one of the Joker's goons.

Some of his combat moves appaer to be be hydrolically enhanced and at times the batman will leap sideways but totally enahnced in this fashion.

About the inmate with the strange name, who according to his comicbook bio was covered in a intricate assortment of scars. Lots of spirally designs and was alittle amused to find that these were really just notchs n dashs carved into his flesh

However I 'm definitely not happy with the takedown move. The one performed from behind. Batman really needs to pull this off faster or find another way of taking dwon multiple gunmen stealthly. As it feels like the other gunmen should have spun around and fired on me as the Batman was doing this.

I tried this scenario differently again. Rushing at them head on in full view, letting the batsuit take the damage and on my last go took down two of them before falling at the feet of the third. It's either impossibly hard to break your own combos in this game or I need more practice. You only need to attack them once to disarm them, I could imagine someone equipped as the Batman surviving that encounter, but not unscathed.

The last part of the demo, the most interesting once again after three goes within the last two days. I found quite a few way for the Manbat to dispatch those last few guards while silently taunting them by springing from gargoyle to gargoyle to floor to gargoyle to walkway and back to gargoyle while bataraning them.

beng able hang from the gargolye like a real bat. This came as a surprise to me. Though, it's so totally Batman. I'm glad they put that one in. Combined with finishing move on anybody walking underneath.

I took Bluemeanies' advice and bataranged thehanging amn frm the otherside, but didn't get my two forone. They weren't standing close enough.

The Gargoyle grappleing...

A nice touch, but I do hope those aren't to be the only wall fixtures that the Batman can rest on as well as grapple to. It was on my last play that I realised that he can grapple to roof of the building in the middle of that large room as well as some parts of the gantry walkway surrounding it.

The gargoyle... it's abit strange that they have been attached to the inside of building. I always thought that where there is a Gargoyle there is also a rain gutter, but also guess that the Arkan Asylum is a strange place where this type of archictecture is symbolic for a madhouse being designed turned inside out.

It does feel sort of uncomfortable, cold and unforgiving and that was the feeling I got from it's interior.

Might have been a more stealthy version of Judge Dredd, walking darkend corridors of the undercity. Funny how they both wear skin tight clothing and use gadjets. Though I must admit that Judge Dredd takes a different approach to crime, citizens and perps.

For those avid fans buying this game. I do hope that Batman has free roaming all over Gotham City while at the wheel the Bat-Mobile and I mean the streets, the parklands, townhall, the police department, the docks and warehouses, the railway as well as the Bruce Wayne estate, Manshion, it's grounds and the infamous Batcave. As I do hope this game isn't just confined to the Madhouse.

Have spent a day and a bit on this now and it's just tops. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is so slick it's addictive. Haven't quite mastered the art of being secretive/subtle yet...

At one point I got into a heated discussion on post modernism with a load of heavies and one of them came at me with an iron bar. A few deft button pushes and our hero had taken the bar from the heavy and smacked him round the head with it. If you blinked, you missed it. Fantastic.

The Scarecrow sequences are currently getting the Favourite vote at Fester Towers.

However, I'm somewhere around the 30% completed stage so no more spoilers, please! :)

There'll be a smile on your face soon enough...

Around the time you combine glide kicks with silent takedowns. If not before.

Anyone else got it on 360 from GAME so they get the Scarecrow Challenge levels...if so, have you got them working?  I can't find where to download or input the access code?  HELP?

Yet more hours lost over the weekend... Didn't know about the Scarecrow challenge thing you mentioned, WoD. The normal sequences with him are bad enough! Starting to get the hang of Riddler's challenges though. Once I'd realised they weren't all those collectable thingys...

I'm currently wondering
where this Baby Bio outbreak will end, and can you really sneak up on one of those pods.
Yep. I think I was on 80% when I finished the story. Just finished getting all the riddles this afternoon and still only on 85%, so I suppose it's the challenges next.

Really cool game, but it's a bit short and the secret maps probably make it too easy to find everything. When's the sequel out?

I've been really struggling to finish some of the challenges on this. Particularly the predator challenges. I could never seem to do them quick enough or without being seen.

Imagine how amused I was this evening then, when my mate told me that you press select and it gives you specific takedowns to perform to get the medals. It would've been nice if the game told me that.

Finally finished this yesterday. What a game! 75% complete and NOW it awards me an amoured batsuit? Thanks, no really, Couldn't've done with that a while ago...

So I started sifting through all the remaining things to find and realised there was a wing of the penetentiary I'd never been in and the guards, (looking at a room full of poison gas), were still asking about the Joker's next move. Oops, sorry 'bout that.

Now all I have to do is remember how to get back into the cave system to grab the trophy I can see through some bars from outside, but can't reach...

Just finished it (other than the challenges) and that one was the last piece I had to find. Caved in in the end and got the wife to look up the solution and give me hints. It's easier than you might think
and you dont need to go fully into the cave system to get it
It''s a speical day for me today...

Hint hint hint...

Anyway, I got a little present very late last night after getting home from the movies.

This was it!!!!

On the account that I thought wouldn't mind playing the full game after playing the demo with the trailer that shows you what you get in the full game. I was sort of pleased to have it, though I am by no means a devoted fan of Batman.

Sure, I've seen Batman Begins as well as most of the old Batman movies that have been in circulation since not long after I finished high school.

But it isn't something I'd kill to have as a game.

So I do play this game, imagining it as a hybrid Judge Dredd being forced to walk the Undercity Corridors or Mega-City One Prison, Dr icarus' Laboratory's....

Rogue Trooper with his lethal stealthy take down manuever.

Bouncing from enemy to thug like Slaine with the same leg-springy fighting prowess.

The colours suck, but I know that suits Batman to a tee.

It's shame that I mostly rely on Detective Mode so much when it spoils what ever great graphics have been squeezed from this and end up switching between both modes numerously to get the most of this game.

Now I'm not so frustrated since the demo when the cinimatic styled combat/stuff withe grappeling device takes over. It's very welcome as it allows the game to flow along.

I find that I fight more and more enemies that Batman doesn't always respond as needed or on time and just falls. Then I found out that I was just repeatably pressing the Counter Attack button. Doesn't always work that way
The tougher guys that need to stunned, so they don't break you combo just because they have hand wepons. Thats getting alittle hokey.

Being confined to the Island within those gates feels so retrictive, so narrow and once again I'm alittle dissappointed with how gloomy it all looks, but thats Batman: Arkam Asylum for you. I stopped playing for few hours once I did abit of grappeling around the various roof tops. Using Batglide to float down.

What with the small exposives that only effect specific areas. I reckon, they should have been allowed more freedom with this one.

I like the way it departs from the demo. Everything was just as it was and then WTF is happening. Though it's cool that way it happened.

Of course, with that demo. They really wanted to give you taste of fighting many armed guards using the stealth options as I found they are really the only way you can do that.

They still really need to tweak the A.I. Those thugs should really start panicking when they find half their number have been compromised.

Of course I really referring the to four guards patrolling some section of the mdeical building, ebfore you get to pounce on Harly Quinn. Even playing on Medium difficulty there none of gaurds rushing over to any of their fallen. No alarm being raised.

It's a lovely deversion for the Batman fans and computer game geeks who just like playing that type of game.

It's has many innovations. Iw ill be looking foward t the many gadgets that are to becomase available. I just wished they could match the playable realism with the graphical realism thats been reached here. As it looks good, even if alittle dull with the colours. It still drops right down in alot of other places and you soon see the game for what it becomes through repetative playing.

Still, I am enjoying this, but I have stoppedplaying for now. I'm tackling Bane at the moment.

He's difficult, but I have found the correct plan for fighting him. Though I find Batman doesn't respond so fast to my suggestive button pressing to get him to dodge and punch. Most of the time he freezes momentarly while the other runs right over him.

Bane reminds me of....

Repeating what I said...

QuoteSo I do play this game, imagining it as a hybrid Judge Dredd being forced to walk the Undercity Corridors or Mega-City One Prison, Dr icarus' Laboratory's....

Rogue Trooper with his lethal stealthy take down manuever.

Bouncing from enemy to thug like Slaine with the same leg-springy fighting prowess.

That was meant to be.....

I do play this game, imagining it as a hybrid Judge Dredd being forced to walk the Undercity Corridors or Mega-City One Prison, Dr icarus' Laboratory's....

Without his LawGiver or another firearm.

I forgot to add that there's a element of Johhny Alpha What with Batman's
Dectective
sight ability to see where everybody is and even through solid obstacles. This would come in handy with a powerful firearm that can shoot through walls.

There's Nemesis the Warlock The appearance of his rubbery costume with pointy ears looking like horns, the cowl looking abit his mouth, and the billowing cape.

The game defintly need more intertacxtion withthe envorment and objectes like the trolleys, wheelchairs that are seen the corrdors, computer terminals and other equipment. Discarded weapons like the lead pipe. I guess Batman wouldn't handle anything like that.

I gotta say, I love the WayneTech concept with the artwork provided and all th e stuff with the character bios, recorder interveiwed with the incarcerated villains, character trophies, Riddles that I don't entirely understand yet.

Nocturnal Hunter

Last Man Standing

The challenge that came with the regular game.

Intencive Treament.

3300

Despite what I said earlier. I am loving this game for it's merits as a sneak around... on the roof tops, guard towers, in the ventilation ducts, finding trophies and solving riddles.

Yeah, I love the Freeflow combat system.

There is something very satisfying about Batman's enviromental analysis when you've correctly solved a riddle.

Still some of those are eluding me, but thats half the fun.

Concerning the LIVE content I was wondering if anybody knew much about that. Since I registered, Alittle box appaers everynow and then up in the upper right hand corner. Telling me I have been awarded for passing some unknown test. Like having the most unprecendented amount of airtime using the batglide.

I lept off the the tallest clock tower in south Arkam. I jumped off the highest ledge facing the water and glided round to the other side landing near the entrance to the manshion and there was that little box blinking on and off.

I don't know what they all amount to, but I have noticed four icons that are hard to make out exactly on my LIVE profile.

They look like badges--we don't need no stinking badges--, but I'm not sure what they symbolise exactly.

By the way, my username is MICKALIVE. Yah, all the good ones were taken.

I was wondering if Batman ever gets accessed on his actions. For instance, I recall leaving three of those thugs hanging from the stone gargoyles after I cleared the sanitarim. After crawling more than halfway back through the ventilation ducts.  I then decided go back to go back and cut them down. I don't really don't Batman would torture anybody like that.

True. Still, nice to know it wasn't a one-off game...

So what would you like to see in the new one? In a twisted way I'd like the puzzles element (should it return), to be more difficult. I preferred the thinking/detection stuff to running around picking up question mark trophies. And they can leave out the handily placed maps telling you where to look.

And it'd be nice if the Scarecrow came back, those bits more mental.

I might be dyslexic when it comes to getting finding my equilibreium in new games.

Need I mention I 'm playing this game using mouse and keyboard for controllers.

It's often not easy as the console equivelent and any function/game ability that requires the use of LCTRL + SPACEBAR will only work once in a blue moon.

That would include opening the grating to move under the floor. It's only worked once.

Using the same to climb down and hang off a ledge.

Using the LEFT SHIFT + RIGHT MOUSE CONTROL to grab and throw your attackers.

Using RIGHT MOUSE to Counter attack. Haven't got that working either.

Not that it's stopped me dead in my tracks, but something else has.( A few paragraphs donw) The game is built to be played many ways and I like that. I 'm just alittle dissapointed with those controls not responding.

Eveything else still works.

Right now, I am stuck on
rescueing those two security guards from being fried and gassed while their hanging from the ceiling while Harly Quinn watches through the window of a enclosed room in the building where you first encounter Poison Ivy & Clayface.
Using the recently aquired Code Sequencer gadget. Is alittle difficult, even if has  worked everytime
unlocking those force field doors. The only intructions you are given are A - D - LEFT MOUSEPAD - RIGHT MOUSEPAD. Freeing those guards is a knightmare. Though I have managed to free both of them once & I thought I was out of the woods. I wasn't able to unlock the door I had Batman come through before the gas was released. It's like the buttons work differently each time.
Has anybdoy had the same problem playing this game on a PC?
Title: Re: Batman : Arkham Asylum

Oh, once I looked here...

http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=97515 (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=97515)

I realised I had the wrong idea about use of the Cryptographic Sequencer

Pressing all the buttons at once, I was, and thinking that clicking on the mousewheel would fire it up.

Anyway, I never realised how much fun this gadget was once I got the hang of it and proceed to decrpyt all the security doors that Batman could find.

COUNTER INTUITIVE was the word I think they were using on that forum. To describe working the PC commands for using that thing.

Would anybody agree with me here?

Forgot to mention that a certain location was a welcome suprise once I climbed out  of the boiler room.
I mean the Batcave
.

Yet it seems futile, when there's computers practically everywhere in the Asylum. It's really just a safe secluded place.
Where he can retrieve new gadgetry
It was bit of a shame they couldn't tie that in with the archive of character bios, and
a  place where you can truly choose your upgrades.

For instance, Batman gains a upgrade after beating up a samll horde of thugs and is standing in puddle of water outside and what happens. His suit, either miraculopusly gains a extra layer of armour, or he suddenly carrying a new weapon thats popped up out of thin air. Batm,an should really return to the batcave for this reason. To read his ninja scrolls. Check up on the computer weapons research to find out what new upgrades are now available. He might have to change back into his Bruce Wayne clothing to do computer stuff while his suit is being upgraded and repaired.

In my game It's torn and shredded on the trailing edge of the cape. A abit of a worry if that has any effect on Bat-Glide. With some slash marks in the middle. Those things would would make the Batcave more interactive.

The new fighting skills could almost be forgiven, because he's constantly fighting all the time. But the need for a training room accessed from his Batcave might be cool.

Anyway, I was chasing Harly Quinn and she looks better everytime I see her and so I still have a fair bit of the game left to finish. Abit too early to judge.

What a shame about Dr Young. Her fate was really harsh and Batman has his morals about not killing any villain once and for all and yet this still happens. Anyway, I was wondering what the hell I would have done if I didn't choose the Remote Bata-Rang as upgrade before I got there. You know, the bit where she needs to be rescued without being seen by her captor. I found that to be the only solution which worked more by ass than any skill.

Anyway, right now I need to find some janitors in the botanical gardens.
I would like to know if not being able to open the grating on the floor is ruining my chances of completing it?

Well it hasn't stopped me so far, but I have tried doing this a few times and while it does'nt always work.

When it has worked

--Today--.

I found two more trophies.

So, I wondering how many of those I missed.

Just completed this game a few hours ago, with everything found, all riddles solved.

As far as I'm concerned. Nothing was to chance.

All orifices were filled.

It took me nearly fifteen days, but I don't like to rush things.

A good game is like a cuban cigar.

Love the method for fighting the Titan-Altered Thugs. Nice idea.

I love the way uthe upgraded combat moves leave ink-like vapor trails, and a type of sonic boom.

I thought the bits with ScareCrow and battling Joker were very good, but didn't like the reverced keys. Too difficult.

On fighting the Joker himself.
Well, I thought thats not really his style. He was just being suicidal when he put the syringe gun to his chin and pulled the trigger.[/spolier]

Might have been cooler to see him fight as he was and not altered by the Titan venom. I always figured him to be preta-naturally dexterous. Moving with phenominal agility and speed.

In the battle preceeding the fight with Joker himself.

I threw the Remote Bata-Rang and it sort of barrel rolled towards the ceiling and came back in a arc Batman caught it in his hand. This happend twice. I thought that was pretty cool at the time. I got the Catch! acheivement
for that.

http://www.kokeytechnology.com/video-games/3216-batman-arkham-asylum-achievements-and-achievement-guide-trophies/ (http://www.kokeytechnology.com/video-games/3216-batman-arkham-asylum-achievements-and-achievement-guide-trophies/)

I'm just wondering if anybody else has done this. It seemed like it was difficult at the time, but there was minamal steering. Actualley, I didn't know where it was going until it was caught. I just remembered seeing the floor come back up towards the Bata-Cam.
On resuming the game after it ended. It was a shame, there was no signs repairs being made. The evil foliage being removed completly. The damaged computers in the Batcave replaced and cleaned up, the evlators fixed. The whole place needs working on. As did have alook around to find anything different. Even the Doctors and Security Gaurds werestill holed up in their hiding spots, I figured moved on, they might have started cleaning up by then.
Still, it's a great game, and even better for fans.

Looking forward to sequel. Is it called Batman: Arkam Asylum Two or  Batman: Gotham City Two

I have this for chrimbo tommorow, but can't play it until Sunday as we are away. AAh!

Hope, I didn't spoil it for you.

You enjoy the game, and espeically if your a fan of that character. Theres alot of gpood detail to this game, and some great visuals. Even if it feel like your watching a movie some of the time, while your in combat, grappeling and gliding. Atleast your influences things.

Finally ordered this from Game this morning, having been let down on the games front by my entire family for both my birthday and Christmas. Tick tock...

Due to my (very) slow playing of the game - not my choice, just don't get time to play, I've only just got to the third Scarecrow bit...

AND -
wow...how could they do that to me...I'm playing on a 360 - notoriously unreliable and they do that...nearly gave me a heart attack - nasty, nasty, clever, clever, game designers!!  I love it when games step through the 'third wall - when it's done well...
Any news on the expansion?

I might have checked, but the computer I've played the game on hasn't been working as of the last couple of months. The problem is something as simple as a broken piece of plastic supporting the on/off button.

Anyway, the computer is now getting that part replaced, and it's got all my Batman Arkham Ayslum saves on it as well as Bioshock and Assasin's Creed.

Sorry for the necro-post but after much hassle from a friend and now, after my brother has bought this game via Ebay, I'm busy playing this game.
