Nope, not got it... since moving to Annual Sub, it has been pretty woeful, including one Meg that just didnt turn up - I'm taking that as a good sign the push to get more subscribers was successful, but sort it out Tharg!

On the subject of the subscriber offer, anyone had their freebies yet?

If you sign into the shop you should have the 50% off offer in your codes section.

Gave it a quick check and yes it is.

Will have a good think about this considering the conditions attached.  Nipper has been nagging about some of the Cor / Buster / Tammy / Jinty stuff so that may be her Crimbo pressies sorted.  Plus Deadworld and TWW ...

Makes up for another toothless weekend ...

Ah another progless weekend, yet to be fair, my prog is arriving on time about once every two weekends, which when expectations are so low makes it a bonus when it does arrive, which is pretty much the same attitude I adopt for the great British railway system which never fails to be consistantly inconsistent.

Well it is nearly the year 2020 when they promised us jet packs, hover boards and a nice weekend away on Mars...

Still no prog, if it doesn't come by Wednesday, then I'll make sure a quick phone call on Thursday will hopefully sort everything out.

Prog landed as expected @ 04h15

Another good prog just run so far has been great.

A new Dredd story starts with art by Nick Percival. This time around it is about a serial killer.

Defoe's art is a lot more clearer than previous episodes. We heading to a all-action finale here.

The highlight this time is Hope. What a grim dark story enjoying every second of this

HIGH ART
LOW  ART

IS THERE ANY DISTINCTION AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN ONE ADOPTS THE FORMS OF THE OTHER?

For thousands of years, art was the preserve of kings and emperors and the only suitable subjects of art were the only things that stood above kings and emperors: god(s) and the heavens.

Kings and emperors sometimes featured in the art, but only to show their relation to and humble servitude of the gods*. The Renaissance relaxed the rules to include the obscenely wealthy, but it was the late-19th century before the mundane was considered a suitable subject for Art.

The value system flipped** and now the only art that deals with gods and their ways is the low sort. Defoe's literally about a god, Brink's Melancholema and Chronozon are gods (real or not), and Cade and the Sisters are either gods or their opposites.

Lichtenstein and Warhol put commercial art and pop culture in the academy, so comics occupied the abandoned high ground. But comic creators, omnivores that they are, can't let Proper Art go. As well as the examples above, last week's episode of Defoe saw SK Moore come all over Leonardo (https://i.imgur.com/ytFnASo.jpg).

Comics have inherited art's former fixation on the elevated, whether that's gods or the privileged forms of high art, although 2000ad probably has as many fans as Bacon and Kahlo did in their lifetimes. Broxton quoting Bacon is especially interesting, given that work's history of inspiring low art (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet) that became high art ***

* Except when the kings and emperors decided they were gods, in which case they would commission the creation of monumental works of art that desperately tried to convince the viewer that this act of self-deification was anything more than mental illness or the same social isolation that means nobody dares tell Mark Zuckerberg he needs to change the way he gets his hair cut.

** When the wealthy decided God was dead, the value system flipped and now the lowly are deified. The Art world is falling over itself to work a Grenfell (http://www.grenfelltower.memorial/) angle into every exhibit and wealthy patrons are trying to live forever by coopting the exercise and dietary (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleolithic_diet) habits of peasants.

*** If Alien hasn't quite yet joined Nosferatu (an unlicensed pulp knock-off!) and the works of Hitchcock on the leger of schlock subsequently revaluated as high art, it's only the death of its director away from doing so

I couldn't remember anything in previous books of Brink indicating the WASP-ish sounding Bridget Kurtis was Latinx, so found it odd to learn she grew up in the barrio and has a mum neighbours call Mama Dora. Turns out German-Mexicans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Mexicans#Notable_German-Mexicans) are a thing.

Wayhey the Prog has landed - finally - so where are we. Well Wagner Dredd has finished so we know we're on a bit of a downer but a decenting part to the new story by Michael Carroll and Nick Percival softens the blow... somewhat.

The art in Defoe continues to settle down and is all the better for it. Brink continues to be quiet genius. I seen folks say that this story isn't served well by being in short episodic chunks and I really couldn't disagree more. Each part and its defined sharp apartly simple scenes bring into sharp focus tense atmosphere, the sharp characterisation and the glory in the details, that final page. Then as you look back you get the slow realisation that week on week these small perfectly formed vignettes perfectly craft the wider piece and somehow a lot has happened. It just works so, so well.

Fall of Deadworld on the other hand does a brilliant story in a completely different way. It drops you in, shakes you about, bursts and explodes all over the page and leaves you exilerated. Both work wonderfully and their difference and yet commonality define the wonder of the Galaxys Greatest.

Oh and then Hope sneaks up behind you and quietly sticks a knife in and leaves you hanging on breathless in a dark alley.

Good stuff.

I got mine and The Meg in a double drop today. Have already voiced my concern to TMO about we subbers mucking in with the rest on a Wednesday.

Not too much to say, with the same roster of strips ticking over nicely... I think for the first time in this run Defoe nicks Top Thrill, while Brink perhaps treads water a little too much and the Deadworld plot meanders. Hope also brings home the Bacon, though I thought it was a tiny bit cheeky of Jimmy Broxton to duplicate the entirety of the large panel on the first page on the subsequent page, with a replaced head.

Finally (!!) got hold of the prog this morning - late or what?
Will read hopefully before spoilers come online today for next week's 2159 (that didn't arrive)
Stunning, spooky Percival cover art and nice to see him back on Dredd for a while with Michael Carroll.
Kettle's boiled! to be continuned...

I only received my prog yesterday - going from getting it the Saturday before to almost a week after the cover publication date is a big change which ISN'T WELCOME  >:( Still, as long as they're arriving I can't grumble too much.

Dredd starts a new yarn well, with a solid opener. I really like Percival's work as a rule and I like how it gives a claustrophobic, humid and grimy feel to MC1 here. Perfect for the story matter.

And Hope is continuing to be wonderfully chilling stuff! I don't know if I can add much more than that, but the quiet and understated way this is presented makes the horror all the more, well, horrific. Great stuff.

Number 3 on the spookometer roster is the frankly freaky Deadworld. It's gruesome, relentless and a lesson in creating and maintaining a tone though multiple series - I think the art on this run is a new high for Kendal.

Defoe has zombies. I'm lost and don't really know what's going on anymore.

Last and best this week is the wonderful Brink. Over to Colin...
