Title: Welcome to 2000AD Online
Post by: VinceBot on 07 September, 2009, 09:27:21 AM
New to the forum? Post a new thread (http://2000adonline.com/forum/index.php?action=post;board=23.0) and introduce yourself to the other board members!

To the current board members: I can't think of anything else to say here, I just want it to be a quick easy read and encourage new users to post. Anyone got any suggestions for additional things to say?

Perhaps this isn't really applicable in this thread, but it seems like the next best place to post.

I've been away from the forums here for a little while and Ion returning, I noticed a set of rules have been posted for forum use. Having read it, I just wanted to say how excellently written, clear, reasonable and helpful they are.

I recently decided to stop using a certain message board owned by a successful American comic book publisher. The problem was that, quite simply, no clear guidance for acceptable use was provided there. The standard of moderation over there also caused me some concerns. Basically, everybody seems to get the same harsh treatment regardless of the severity or nature of the offence. It was even getting to a point recently when unintentional gaffes on the part of numerous users were being punished pretty severely.

The statement of forum rules and expected ettiquette here is really comprehensive. It's informed me of a few problems and issues that I didn't even realise were concerns for website administration and moderators, so many thanks for that.

Hopefully, nobody intends to deliberately sour the atmosphere of the message boards with unsavoury comments. But such clearly written and specific guidelines help us to be on guard against doing anything to spoil the community here.

Just my two cents, as this stuff has been on my mind for a few weeks.

Thanks HdE, we're glad everyone seems to have taken the new rules in a positive way. It hasn't really affected our moderation, just you guys now have good guidelines about whats kosher and what isn't.

We don't envisage harsh moderation techniques to be required on a frequent basis, but you never know. Hopefully as this forum grows all we'll need to do is improve the system for reporting posts and add more moderators to the staff roster.

We always try to listen to the majority or at least sensible vote from the community at large, as after all this forum is for you guys to enjoy.

Much obliged for the reply Vince! I didn't expect any feedback at all.

I won't say too much about the subject (as I'd be derailing this thread pretty spectacularly) but I can only applaud the efforts you guys have gone to.

And yeah - harsh moderation technique is rarely required in msot cases. I think that causes more problems than it solves, and only helps to foster an atmosphere of hostility.

My brief experience of these forums has been that it's usually a really fun, friendly place to post a bit of good natured rubbish, and the posters are given enough room to express themselves adequately. 'Tis a cool place to visit.  ;D

Wasn't sure where to post this but this seemed a good spot.
Just logged on to the new look forum and disappointed. The old forum look was great, absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever -the new look is very bland indeed, also the text seems very small when including a quote. Why was it changed at all??

The old forum broke, which forced our hand somewhat. This isn't the final version of the new shiny one, so please bear with us.

Hi All,
I'm new to all this stuff, although I've been a reader for a while I thought I'd better introduce myself..

I'm a long time 2000AD reader,  which have then led me into other Comics and Graphic novels,  which then led me into collecting artwork,  then collecting figures...etc, etc... It's a slippery slope once you start on it and somehow no matter how much you get it never seems to be enough......Coz there is always something great out there !!.......I blame the Internet ( and eBay )....

As I write this, I'm waiting for delivery of a 3A 1/6 scale Mongrol from America....Why ??....Well I saw several photos of him in other threads here,  and it looked just AWESOME !!  and I just couldn't believe how I managed to miss it when it came out in the shops... I realise it would have only been in a few select shops but it honestly completely passed me by..........My Mongrol has just arrived in Britain yesterday ( 8th ),  and now I'm like a kid again, desperate for him to arrive, to see him and unpack him.  He will have pride of place ( along with my MegaHeroes Dredd statue ) in my guitar room....

Cheers to you all, and hope to contribute to some threads soon...I've already 'met' some of you via ComicArt Fans website....Bob

Welcome, Bob!  Good to see you over here.

I'm sure you'll love Mongrol, by the way - he's a beast.  You'll have to pick up Ro-Jaws to go with him...

Cheers,
David

Thanks David,
Much appreciated...I think I'll hold off on Ro Jaws at the moment as I'm saving up again for Hammerstein !!
( and a Judge Dredd Helmet from Planet Replicas.....orders being taken again at end of February / beginning March )... I'm hoping that Hammerstein will be the next to be released....Do you know if that's the case ??
Cheers,
Bob

As far as we know, Hammerstein's next.  Not sure when, but probably at least a couple of months away.  I'll post any info (or someone else will) in the 3A thread - or make a new thread for Hammerstein when the time comes.

Huh. Just figured out I need to post here before I can post on other threads? Learn something new every day.

So.. hello. I've been on the forum for years under a couple of different names, usually because I log out and can't remember what the name and password combination was. Hopefully, this time I'll remember. My name's Paul and I'm a Scotsman living in South Africa. (Not Cape Town, alas, otherwise I would have been trying my damnedest to be an extra on the movie.)

Hi Paul,
And welcome from a fellow Scot.....Still living in Scotland and virtually 'snowed in' at the moment....
Great stuff !!

I think you have to post several times before being allowed to post elsewhere ( to prove you're not a spambot ) or until one of the moderators gives you more access...

I think Richmond Clements is one and if you ask nicely he'll upgrade your status..
Cheers and Welcome....( Some really good threads here )

Hi all,

I used to read 2000ad about 20 years ago but eventually drifted away - now that I think about it, it was around the time of the Stallone movie which as I recall had a serious effect on the prog!!

Anyway, I bought the new film recently (much better!) and have started reading the Megazine again and have been really enjoying it.  So, I decided to join the forum and get involved with all the discussions -  I have to say, we never had this ability when I was a lad and I'm really impressed with the community on here from fans to artists - its ace!!

Cheers.

Yeah - seen the new movie a few times now and it gets better on repeat viewings!

The original, well what can I say - it has to be seen to be believed!  Channel 5 seem to show it every now and then so keep an eye out!!

I know it is probably not the brightest thing to own up to, but I still have a soft spot for the Stallone
movie. I remember being swept away by the hype at the time, and the excitement of seeing MC1 on the big screen, and walking into Woolies or Toys R Us to find the array of plastic crap that film spawned.
I've still got my empty JD bubble blower and my JD stationary set.

Ha!  I've still got the 'sci fi special' they did to coincide with the movie.  With "Seven Pages of Judge Dredd Movie Stills"!!

I have not seen it for a while but as I recall mean machine and hammerstein were good.  It's just that Stallone was so corny, but I guess that seemed to be how he was at the time e.g. demo man, rocky v, assassins.

Worst still is the bizarre cod piece Sly sported ..... and the comedy side-kick.

All that aside, I think they did a reasonable job of the scenery in the Cursed Earth as well as in the city.

Where the latest film wins hands down for me, is a much less ambitious script giving the film a feel of a regular storyline.

Ha! Ha! I have been chuckling to myself about that piccy since I posted it!!

In fact, all this talk of the old film has made me kind of miss it. I had to get a fix via YouTube - as you say MC1 and the cursed earth look great - he just couldn't keep that darn helmet on could he??

I watched this film so many times I wore out the video tape
If you think about it, without Sly showing how it shouldn't be done, maybe Karl wouldn't have got it so right.

Hi, all. Hope you're all well.

Late thirties latecomer to 2000AD. Read some relaunched Eagle, Scream, etc, as a kid but don't remember ever reading 2000AD. Dunno why. Got Dredd Case Files 01 case files soon after it came out and have been picking up one a year or so since. Just finished Case Files 05 and am reading the first Strontium Dog Agency Files and Flesh just arrived last week too.

I'm at a very picky stage of my life where almost all forms of entertainment are not quite cutting the mustard, for one reason or another, but loving the 2000AD thrills. :D

(I don't remember the Stallone Dredd being that camp! Hilarious! General film opinion aside, I still maintain Sly had THE CHIN for Dredd...)

Cheers!

You can post here and a few other sections, Nick. Make a few innocuous posts telling everyone about your history with the comic (first prog, space spinners, that kind of thing) then as soon as Richmond gets drunk enough he'll exalt you to the rank of newbie. Try not to look as if you're impersonating a 2000ad creator.

Of course, if you are THE Nick Percival, purveyor of fine cover art in particular, then there is a special Droid status reserved for you. Dunno if a Mod grants that after your circuits have been checked, or something like that...?

There's a thread round here where forum members show off whatever tatty old pages of original art from 2000ad (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,28546.2430.html) they have taking up space in the attic - I don't suppose you have anything lying around? We might have to ban you from the forum art competition (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,39122.0.html), but everyone posts the last thing they've drawn on Does My Art Look Big In This? (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,27612.msg781353.html#msg781353)

What was it like illustrating Judge Dredd stories written by Mark Millar?

Cheers - I'll see what art I can dig out. The Millar story was cool at the time as it was the first Dredd story I ever did but looking back at it, er...not so much. Very early days as far as the art was concerned and it probably wasn't Millar's finest hour either....

Welcome Nick.

I'll take a page or two of 'Goodnight Kiss' original art off your hands if you insist on giving them away free!

Hi everyone

I am new to the forum but certainly not new to the Prog or the Megazine. Indeed I actually started with Starlord but much to my regret only started to get the Prog regularly 6 months later...missing out the Day the Law Died - doh!!!

Favorites over the years are Dredd, Stront, Slaine, Nemesis, Sinister Dexter, Dante...usual suspects I guess :)

I have been enjoying reading the reviews over the last few weeks - I certainly have got more enjoyment out of Brass Sun, Flesh and Damnation Station than I think would otherwise have been the case and thought I should get involved.

Wow, Starlord, that brings back fond memories. The initial Ezquera art for Strontium Dog was breath taking. The real sense of otherness shaped to a great extent my formative years.
I came back on board last year and whist loathe to criticize the great Ezquera; the artwork on Strontium Dog now seems tired and lacking that sense of a warped and strange future. The pics of the mutants tied to posts and lazered through the head in the first Feral story (I think the artist was Steve Pugh)  got across the callous brutality of the reality of rebellion than the new strip really has or I fear is likely to.
This is a personal opinion; not a cheap insult. Carlos Ezquera in his day was a truly formidable, imaginative force of nature.

There really should be an introductary heads up for new forum members. Anyhow, the site moderators are usually fairly good at granting access after it is ascertained you are not a spammer, bot, troll etc. Bolt01; Richmond Clements are 2 moderators that readily spring to mind. Send them a nice message and they should facilitate. Z

As well as the reasons Z gave, new users are on probation to make sure they aren't mentalists who will accuse others of being part of the Illuminati because their opinion concerning the work of Gerry Finley-Day is different to their own.

It might help to make a few posts regarding topics which interest you in the many areas to which you're already granted access. As far as I can remember, most of the General Chat section is yours to do with as you please. My probationary period posts show lots of activity in the Music, Books & Comics, Film & TV, General, and Off Topic sections - if you can't find something of interest to post about amongst that lot, you might very well be an AI attempting to pass the Turing test, rather than an actual real live human:

Wondering if anyone can help, I joined back in October and made just under 50  posts now, but there are still areas I cant post in or reply to particularly the spoilers section (Prog & Megazine) where I would really like to join the discussion.

Is there a limitation on when members can start posting in these sections?
Also I dont have the ability to view or update my profile to add an avater etc, etc

Thanks

Yeah. It's a security thing to prevent spammers and the like. Hopefully a mod will be along shortly to sort you out.

@Mods. This comes up again and again. Maybe it would be an idea to have a sticky thread in this section to let new users now what to do. At the moment we have this buried in another thread: "Upon successful application to the 2000 AD Online Forums your account will have certain limitations put in place for a period of time before becoming a fully fledged member."

Assuming anyone finds and reads that it makes it seem like this is an automatic process. Which it isn't.

Loving 2000ad, especially Dredd, love being surprised by new stories in the overall anthology of the comic, and love the creative explosion of writing and art that makes 2000ad such a fab place to be and explore, so after many years of reading the progs, megs and forum I thought I'd take the plung and join in with your community, cheers

Hello all. I'm a bit lost here, but I 've seen this magazine on the stands & now I discovered this website. Looks different & I might subscribe or just buy them from the new stands.

How do I find my profile?

I also want to change my username to JovisbyJove or the other way around, JovebyJovis. What ever sounds better. You should know where Jovis comes from, & the expression By Jove or Jovis. I think it's a polite expression for something else. I couldn't be bothered looking this up right now, but I did so about a month earlier & thought of that Irish actor who played that Roman owner of Gladiator slaves from the television series. He's prone to some of the best & most original profanity in that show, atleast. Not sure where to start here. How about a tour of this forum?

Welcome, By-Jove. Others will be able to tell you better how to change your name but I'd suggest fiddling with your Profile Page or, failing that, PM one of the mods for assistance. A good place to start exploring is the Active Topics page - there should be a link to that somewhere near your name an avatar. Enjoy!

Your browser my differ, but for me I go to the top of the screen, hover over 'profile', wait for the drop-down to appear, then go for 'account settings'.

I believe it's a mince oath, and that people in 18th and 19th century England who couldn't say 'by god' in polite company co-opted a god from another pantheon (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/by_Jove) for the same effect.  Other stand-ins included 'dash' or 'darn' for 'damn' and 'gadzooks' for 'god's hooks' i.e. the nails which attached Jesus to the cross.

Evening all.

I read 2000 AD (on and off) from Prog 1 up to some point around Prog 600. I stopped reading, not because I was getting older, but because I just didn't find the Prog that good anymore. Strontium Dog didn't have Wulf, Robo-Hunter had aged and then got stuck in a clones body and Rogue Trooper now appeared to be some other bloke called Friday.

I bought the odd collection over the years since but got back on board with the release of Judge Dredd The Mega Collection. I still enjoy re-reading the old strips the best but have really enjoyed a lot of John Wagner's recent stuff.

Anyway it is good to see the Prog still going.

Hi Timon, you will need to get your image hosted online somewhere and then post the link here using the 'square bracket' tags.

In the selection of buttons above the post, the button below the B for bold is an 'insert image' button (If you hover over it, it will tell you what each of these does) press that and then insert you image link into the space where the * is.

An example is below where I've broken the tags...

Hi there

My name is Chris, I'm from just west of Glasgow and I've been lurking on the board on and off for a while.

I've been reading 2000ad since I was about 8 or 9, and I started wth issue 529, went back and filled in the gaps as I went on and I have a full run in in the loft, much to my wife's despair.

2000ad is probably as strong as ever, even if there's a bit of a dip in the new talent coming in of late.

I thought I'd drop in and say Hi before I post a question about the new issue of the meg.

Best

Chris

Hi, thanks very much

Hi mods, would it be possible to upgrade my account so that I can spots in the spoilers thread?

I'll try ask here anyway.

Did anyone else read the Wagner's Walk collection that was bagged with the new meg?

It seems to have skipped a chapter, as it jumps from a cliffhanger in the previous episode, straight to a completely unrelated scene in the next - and it's clear time has passers

Just wondering if anyone else had the same error, or it was just my copy.

Pretty annoying as I was really enjoying it.

I read this last night and had exactly the same experience. There's a headline at the start of the next episode: "After resting, the three Germans were ready to continue on..." so it looks like there's some reason for it but I've no idea about the original publication.

Not sure if anyone has seen your request to be upgraded yet either. Anyone?

I see also that there's some comments re this missing chapter on the thread for this issue of the meg, so it wasn't just my copy that had a chapter missing. They could have maybe stuck a note in the editorial just to let folk know.

A regular page to give a bit of background on the bagged collections would be appreciated, at least for the non 2000ad reprints. I don't know whether that's too much of an overhead but it would have come in handy this month certainly.

Longtime lurker. Finally decided to make an account. So... uh, hello!

First prog was 1900, so I guess that makes me one of those new readers that you all worry far too much about (no need to fret, guys, Tharg's doing all the right things to attract us!)

That's good to hear. Always great to hear what 'fresh blood' has to say. Have you started to catch up on the old stuff yet?

Welcome aboard and have fun.

How did you get indoctrinated, and how have you found your first three years?

When the Doctor Who resurgence happened, I got the bug pretty hard. This led me to the classic series and then even further down the rabbit hole into the Big Finish releases. That's where I first started to hear about 2000 AD. Even though their Dredd range was relatively inactive by this point, there seemed to be an overwhelming enthusiasm for the series with people constantly asking when/if they would return. So one day, when I saw the big display of Case Files in Forbidden Planet, I decided to give the first one a go.

I ended up picking up a couple more and then - intrigued by the twitter promo - I decided to give the jumping-on prog a try. I'd feared it would be difficult to jump in to all of the pre-established stories but there's something really approachable about 2000 AD. Over my first 18 months, story after story would be thrown at me and most of the time there would be just enough details for me to get up to speed and engaged. And for the more long running stories, there's always someone like Sinead or Volodina so I could be introduced to the characters through their eyes (much like how a new Doctor Who companion can introduce people to the show!).

I'm really glad I took the plunge. Now, 2000 AD has become a routine part of my week and introduced me to a bunch of amazing creators!

I've barely scratched the surface so I've still got most of the classics to look forward to. I plan to pick up a good chunk of the Ultimate collection since nearly all of it is going to be new to me.

Good option and a great way to pick up some absolute classics. Have fun with it all.

Hello

I'm new. Not really hot on forum etiquette but willing to learn. I've been collecting 2000AD for about 30 to 40 years. I'm a bit of a dinosaur where it comes to the web.

Hi all,

Been lurking around here on and off for a while but as all things 2000AD are super exciting at the moment have been here a lot. Thought it was about time to introduce myself...

I am a Prog one-er (which was out on my tenth birthday) but lapsed a few times. Have had a subscription of both the Prog & Meg since 2012 when my interest was renewed by the Dredd film.

Can't get enough at the moment - current Thrills, the Hachette collections, and various podcasts are all awesome.

I'm new to the site and just wanted to take the opportunity to say hi to everyone, and to thank the team for accepting my registration.

I'm Jonas Ranson, son of 2000AD illustrator Arthur Ranson.

I began reading 2000AD around 1980/81 and my interest in the comic very much centres on this period.

I'm a fine art & fashion textiles screen printer myself, run a small studio in East London.

I've recently collaborated with my father on four fine art print editions of 2000AD artwork of my dads... including 2 of Judge Anderson & 2 of Button Man, all Illustration's having featured in 2000AD originally.

All prints are signed & numbered by Arthur... have been printed in close collaboration with him, and are hand printed in high quality acrylic inks on heavy weight 310gsm archival paper to gallery standard.
If anyone is interested they can DM here or easier just buy direct from my website...

It's been personally very rewarding to have collaborated with my father on what I feel are very unique & beautifully crafted items. This is a rare opportunity to purchase something very special.

If any one had any questions I'd be happy to answer any.

All the best

Yeah those prints look fantastic and deserve more prominance as I'm sure they'll be plenty of floks lucky enough to be able to pick them up.

Hi Hi. I'm Edie Nugent, and I'm saying hi because I've just started a podcast with my husband Simon Fraser who is known to most of you.

Here's his post about it: https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=47384.0

Which I am not allowed to reply to, I'm assuming because I've never posted anything and have just been a weird lurker till now.

So...hi!

Sure a Mod will be along soon to sort out your permissions. In the meantime as I said on the thread you directed folks to thanks for the podcast its fantastic, having listened to episode 2 this afternoon. Really looking forward to seeing ... well hearing... the insights as they come in.

More importantly welcome aboard and have fun.

Colin I was so pleased with your review I just read it out loud. The podcast has been so much fun to make so far, and to know that its entertaining for a fan such as yourself is really gratifying. The two episodes will remain up on Simon's website as a bonus for fans of his work, but we'll be looking to shop the first episode out early next week as we work out how to submit the RSS feed to the various distribution outlets.

Episode three is in the editing bay, so in not too long you'll hear Simon's thoughts on Chris Weston taking over art for a prog.

Thanks again so much for the feedback!

Did you bring cheese? Dairy is the gateway to the promised land. Or maybe Indigo Prime (moderator) will be able to sort you out.
