aaaaages ago, you helpful people directed me to Spybot SnD and Lavasoft for free spybot detection and removal. I've used them ever since and haven't had any of the problems that lead to my original cry for help.
  However that was ages ago. Are there any other things I should be using?

I find SpywareBlaster is also pretty good to have running alongside any anti-virus/spyware software you've got. It's a freeware spyware blocker that runs in the background. Prevention is better than cure and all that.

AVG anti-spyware and RegCleaner are two great programs that I found. They're both free and they help get unwanted rubbish off your hard drive. Cant load Google for some reason, so no links, sorry!

thanks for that, I'll give it a whirl. Mind you, I haven't had any problems with spybots for about four years. Either the two services I've been using are the Bomb or my browsing has gotten less dodgy...
