Megazine / Meg 388 - This Means Waugh!
16 September, 2017, 08:07:13 PM
Wow! Managed to start the Meg thread for a second week in a row. Is no-one else getting their copies? We do have a new postie so maybe Tharg has employed him.
Nice fine and dandy Devlin Waugh cover
Anyway, another strong Megazine this month with a nice one off Dredd that focuses on the relatives of his 'victims' in a support group which was a neat idea. Some very Cam Kennedy style art from Nick Dyer that fits in with the story pretty well.
Anderson chugs along nicely and loved the Lego people robots! My bank is the same ( you'll know what I mean when you read it)
The return of Devlin Waugh felt a little bit flat for me but I know it's only the first episode. Is this the first time John Smith hasn't written Devlin? I always liked his first story with the prison and vampires. It could end up being good , so will wait and see. Artwork certainly captured Sean Philips Devlin's likeness.
Good Frank Miller career spotlight even if I know pretty much everything it focused on. The other text article is a book review about Comics Storytelling which will be good for the kiddies!
Dredd Furies conclusion has a naughty swear word in it but is a pretty action packed end to the tale. Nuff said.
Standout strip for me again is Wagner & Percival's Dark Judges Dominion. This, to me is what a Dark Judges film could be without any Dredd related stuff. Nice, moody, gruesome and has a tense claustrophobic feel to it. Love how some pages just let the amazing art tell the story and build the suspense. Really reminds me of The Thing meets Aliens meets Walking Dead. That last page is a belter!
Lawless returns next month as well. Yay!
The floppy a 'Whatever happened to..?' compilation with Tweak, Giant, Maria, The Griblings, etc, etc
So now you know!  :)

Megazine / Re: Meg 387 - Skyhigh!

Dessert was chocolate brownie with ice cream, so a nice sugar rush as I'll read the rest of the Meg. Cover by Richard Elson who seems to be trying out a painterly style which looks quite nice. No Dreddlines - decent Dredd one off by Rory McConville & Joel Carpenter but Dredd does seem have a bit of a big/wide nose throughout the art. Good for sniffing out crime (I'll get my coat). Anderson continues nicely and Havn  finishes (great double page spread from Flint), which like most people have said, I really need to read it all in one go as the pacing seemed a bit strange in monthly chunks. Interviews with John Stokes who draws some nice foxes and Liam Sharp who does a nice Wonder Woman and focuses on his exhibition in Derby. Movie Dredd, Furies part 2 which is action packed and last but not least, part 2 of Dominion where Wagner & Percival really work well together with this feeling like a big budget, scary Aliens meets the Thing -really loving this! Detailed art with great lighting and atmosphere and Mortis looks as creepy as hell here as he dominates this episode.
Time for another brownie I think and a final read through.

Megazine / Meg 387 - Skyhigh!

My Megazine arrived today which is very weird but very welcome as I just got back from work and had a quick flick through, just at the Dredd story, the Liam Sharp interview and the second part of Dominion. Will read properly after a late tea but looks like another great issue but a special shout out for Percival's art in Dominion, particularly the sequences of Judge Death sleeping and Mortis on the attack are simply stunning! Will be back after dessert!

New Dark Judges story off to a good start (only thing I've read so far!). Lovely art from Nick Percival that just oozes atmosphere and dread. Interested to see where this all goes...Off to work, enjoy the sunshine and read the rest when I get back

That's a really, really powerful cover. Great art and very dynamic. Shame about the dodgy wonky letters design again though. Is this choice of letters, going to be a regular thing on covers now? Loved The Gyre - wish it could have been longer as the story felt a little bit rushed but fabulous atmospheric art and hope Percival & Carroll get to do a longer Dredd epic next time! They work really well together. Time to read the rest of the Meg with a strong cuppa..... :)

Could really do with a lot of different camera angles too, everything 'shot' at shoulder height POV.  Tale itself fine.

Er. Not sure what art you're looking at. There's high angle and low angle 'camera' placements and the normal mid-shots, close ups, long shots, dutch angles, etc. Maybe Percival should ask your expert advice for layouts  on the next Dredd story?  ;)

Thanks for the Meg today, Mr. Postie - and not bent through the letter box, this time!

Strange cover this month. I like that it's different but at first glance wasn't quite sure what I was actually looking at?

Loving the Gyre storyline. Percival's fabulous art always impresses and the attention to detail and lighting are fantastic. Very cinematic and moody. Feels like a Dredd movie, we will never get. Interested to see how this wraps up next month but get the feeling it could have been a longer story? Maybe next time

Interviews were great and I've always liked these. I've never minded the 'magazine' feel of the megazine, although I know it's a sore point for some folk.

Realm of The Damned was off to a good start. Very 'grey' ! but makes all that red stand out! Not the biggest fan of vampires but this looks like a different take on it all.

Going back to re-read the Demarco episodes. Good stuff but feel this will read  better in one go.

Dust is OK. Artwork seems a little bit empty and has a 'rushed' look to it but I do like that we are getting to see more of the movie Dredd's world and hope this will be a semi-regular slot.

Whole issue kept me busy and entertained on a Saturday morning, so that's good in my book! :)

Only read Dredd and Demon Nic so far.

"So what is up with the white whiskers on the bottom of the third page?"

-Unless Dredd has time for a wet shave on his mission (and electric razors won't work in the Gyre), then I think it's fine. I've always liked the slight stubble look on Dredd. Makes him look tougher and older than the average Judge and it's all really down to stylistic choices and artistic license, isn't it? And of course, young Joyce can't grow stubble yet!  ;)

The Meg is going strong.

Stunning cover art by Nick Percival. I love how we actually get a shot that focuses on the environment and makes Dredd seem vulnerable to what lies ahead. Not keen on the design bits though with the letters in the water. I like the pun 'Pacific Grim' but they seem to detract from the great art. Am I right in that I heard a new designer is working for 2000ad, etc?

Anyway, The Gyre is fantastic. Nice build up and it's great to see Dredd and Joyce in a completely new looking place. Real atmosphere and mood to the brilliant art and I love the word-building Percival puts into it with all the little details and texture. Carroll and Percival make a great Dredd team and I just wish they'd do more together.

Interrogation was a good read but does take up a fair few pages, along with the other text features. good for a toilet break, though!

With Demon Nic, still not really sure what's really going on but I've always loved Paul Grist from the Kane days (and Mudman was great). It's pretty bonkers but better than Reaper!

DeMarco is more Carroll brilliance with nice art. A tiny bit sparse but great storytelling. Carroll seems to be taking over the Prog and Meg these day, not that I'm complaining.

And how cool would it be to have a live action version of Dust (I know it won't happen) but it's great to see the movie world of Dredd expanded without the budget restrictions of live action. If only.

Nice prog to wrap things up before the usual jumping on point. I really loved the cover art - funny and nicely done and good to see something not all doom and gloom.

Looking forward to next week and Slaine - yay!

Yeah, I LOVED the cover but I think they actually zoomed in somewhat, which cut off some of the detail.

Ha! looking at all those Lawmaster covers. Is there a way to do that kind of image differently? Bike flying upwards from left to right?

Good issue but man, what a lot of pages (with no text!) for American Reaper! - Dredd is coming along nicely and love the Angelic storyline but the highlight for me was Michael Carroll's and Nick Percival's final days of Mean Machine story. Nice, sad end to the character (although I'm sure he'll be back?) - stunning art and what a cover!

Film & TV / Re: Hawaii five-0 and the event

The Event - good start and nice to see focus on giving some time to the characters so we get to know them a bit instead of cramming everything in 'Heroes' style. So far, way better than Flashforward. I really hope the Event lasts because I'm sick of 'monster of the week' type fantasy TV (see Supernatural.....)
