Help! / Dave Gibbons' pre-2000 AD work
16 February, 2010, 11:41:19 PM
Wow, look at me - two posts in a year! Blimey!

Am hoping someone can give me a little image help.

I'm on the hunt for images of Dave Gibbons' pre-2000 AD work...

I've drawn a blank so far - particularly on images from Powerman (Gibbons ones, not the ones Brian Bolland has posted on his website) and Hotspur - so wondered if anyone had original copies or original artwork they wouldn't mind scanning?

Cheers

Anyone remember when Wagner stopped writing Dredd in the '90s and when he started again?! :S

Books & Comics / Finally ... THE END IS NIGH #4
29 October, 2009, 06:20:07 PM
The next issue of the THE END IS NIGH will launch at Impressions Gallery in Bradford on Sunday 1st November at a fantastic free event!

Our first issue since 2006 sees writers Alan Moore and Iain Sinclair pay tribute to the post-apocalyptic genius of JG Ballard, we mark the forthcoming milestone of 1,000 days till the end of the world, we examine The Rise of the Machines, we ponder as to which animal will unleash the next killer flu plague, we ask is Obama the Antichrist ... and it all comes with a free game of END TRUMPS, where the fate of mankind truly is in your hands!

The whole thing is topped off with an amazingly apocalyptic cover by Defoe artist Leigh Gallagher! We also have contributions from writer John Reppion, along with 2000 AD boarders Ed Berridge and The Emperor!

Keep an eye on www.endisnigh.co.uk after this weekend for the chance to get your hands on a copy - stocks are limited!

Here is the blurb about this weekend's event:

From the Large Hadron Collider to the end of Mayan calendar in 2012, our fascination with potential apocalypse is ever present. Inspired by our exhibition The Last Things, Journalist Michael Molcher and editor of zine The End is Nigh, will take an informed yet satirical look at the speculation surrounding the end of the world in his free illustrated talk at 2pm. Join us and help predict the date the world will end!

Throughout the afternoon the award winning independent Comic Book Shop OK Comics, will be transporting their Drink and Draw event over to Impressions. Like-minded comic fans, budding artists and designers will be able to meet, exchange ideas, sup free hot tea and scribble away. Paper will be rolled over all the tables in the Studio and pens left everywhere, so come along and draw whatever you feel like. Everyone is welcome no matter what your artistic ability and pro comic book artist Leigh Gallagher will be on hand to trouble shoot your illustration irritations at his drop in surgery.

OK Comics will also be bringing a selection of apocalypse themed comic books, which you can browse over a wedge of cake, or yours to buy and take away.

Amble into the gallery and you'll have a last chance to see our exhibition The Last Things by David Moore before it closes on 8 November 2009. Described by writer Iain Sinclair as a "photographer of secret spaces", Moore provides an exclusive glimpse of the Ministry of Defence's secret crisis management centre beneath the streets of central London. This hidden space, only to be used in a major national emergency, hides a strictly controlled working environment continuously on stand-by in which a looming sense of threat is ever present.

So do come along, meet the team, be the first to buy the new issue and hang out in a great venue!

Help! / 'Elp an 'ack out, wudya guv'?
19 July, 2009, 08:07:33 PM
Lo! Am hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction for a couple of things I need to dig out but can't find ...

So, do you know:

Which prog the Michael Jackson-u-like was thawed out, only for them to discover he was ... well, a bit damaged by the cryogenic process.

and

Which prog there was a Ron Smith-drawn Dredd tale in which there's a man made of clock parts, with cogs and springs and the like? Possibly set in the Cursed Earth?

I hereby fall upon your mercy and pity. Reward? My gratitude and loads of cash*

Cheers

General / Hivemind request: Comics Comics No.4
16 June, 2009, 07:38:42 PM
Yo.

Doing some re-re-research (I know, surprises me too) and wondered if anyone possibly had a copy of Comics Comics number 4 (launched at last year's San Diego) that I could steal/buy/get scans of?

General / Write to Ron Smith
14 May, 2009, 08:26:41 PM
Evenin' all

Been a while since I've posted here but, y'know, been busy and whatnot ...

I recently had the very great pleasure of interviewing the inimitable Ron Smith, all-star Dredd artist and veteren of the British comics scene for more than fifty years, for a forthcoming feature in the Megazine. Pleased to say he was a most gracious host and a lovely chap, full of stories about his years in the business and still had a real sparkle in his eye.

He very nicely allowed me to take away some of his unseen or rarely seen artwork to scan in to illustrate the piece, and I'm shortly going to be returning it. However, during a chat with Mr Ewing the other evening we both commented on how much we liked Ron's stuff (Hotdog Run was the first Dredd I ever read) and how much love within the fan base still remained for him and his work.

So here's the deal - in two weeks from now, I'll be sending a package back to Smith Towers containing the leant artwork. But I'd like to show Ron just how much he's still remembered and loved by the readers. Please feel free to use this thread to write your own personal message to Ron - once the fortnight is up I'll print them off and include them with the returned artwork.

Please, no abusive, sarcastic or negative posts - this is meant to be for Ron, a guy whose legacy at 2000 AD is second to none.

Let's show the love, people.

Cheers

Howdie

Having a bit of a clear out and uncovered three 2000AD t-shirts I don't wear anymore ...

The black Dredd one is XL, the white 2000AD one (which has the B&W Kev Walker image of all your favourite characters enjoying a pint on the back) is L (though a bit roomy) and the Rogue Trooper blue on is XXL

Five quid each (to cover postage and packing) to good homes

Since he's not been shy with the praise for a pet project of mine in the past, I can only return the favour. Though this is no hardship, as I was delighted by the first issue of Spurrier's run on Silver Surfer. Scores high on the WeirdShit'o'meter while still being well written, instantly well-thought-out characters and he nicely sets the scene for something special to happen.

Go buy.

Wait, this is too much praise for one man ... the cosmic balance must be restored ... er ... Spurrier smells ... of wrong .............. green wrong.

Help! / Techie help needed
18 October, 2007, 08:33:07 PM
Lo.

Been sent some images to illustrate a feature but they appear to have become mpgs (they appear as 'movies' but are just a single frame) somewhere in the process and I can't find any way to convert them to jpgs.

Can anyone help? Any assistance gratefully received.

Website and Forum / Trolls beware ...
17 October, 2006, 04:38:12 PM
An internet user has been found guilty of what police said was Britain's first "web rage" attack.

After he was arrested, Gibbons was found to have boasted about the attack in a chatroom.

"It went perfectly to plan," he wrote.

Um, but not really, did it ... what with being arrested and all.

Off Topic / Do you use a dictaphone?
05 October, 2006, 04:26:57 PM
No, I use my finger!

Boom boom!

Heh, seriously, I'm looking for a bit of product help.

I wanna buy a digital dictaphone but Amazon, as always, is useless for trying to figure whether something is actually any good or not. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'd prefer not to go too far about £50/£60.

Also, clip-on wireless microphones - I've seen the bastards used on the TV, but can I find one?! Can I hell!

Now, I've been known to do the odd story whose existence is a bit tenuous, but I doubt even I'd manage to get away with 'comic book artist does job' ...

Still disappointed that planes didn't fall out of the sky on January 1, 2000? Still waiting for the angels to whisk you away? Is Armageddon simply geddin' ya down?

Well, if waiting for the End of the World is getting a bit boring, you need THE END IS NIGH! - the official magazine of the apocalypse!

THE END IS NIGH! is on the look-out for contributors for its massive fourth issue â?? there's going to be a brand new format, more content, and even more 100% apocalyptic action!

And we're flinging the scope for submissions for this issue WIDE OPEN! So if you've got an apocalyptic idea, we want to hear from you! Whether it's based on the next scientific scare story, the latest religious rant about the Rapture, or you've got your own vision of the End of the World, let us know about it!

SUPPLEMENT IDEAS

In past issues, a 'theme' has taken over the whole magazine, this time we're accepting any apocalyptic ideas while also running a special When Nature Runs Amok! supplement. Global warming has never been 'hotter' news and we want to bring our readers the latest news, features and weird stuff about when nature gets its own back! Why not have a play around with:

â?¢ global warming (from submerged continents to worldwide draught to the new ice age!)
â?¢ pandemic diseases
â?¢ apocalyptic natural disasters (from a polar shift to cinsane weather to volcano meltdown!)
â?¢ humanity replaced by the next step in evolution (Mutant superheroes? Vampires? Homo superior? Animals taking over? It could happen!)
â?¢ Nature versus technology â?? which will destroy civilisation first?!

But remember â?? so long as it's about the End of the World, it's in THE END IS NIGH!

CAN YOU HELP US?

THE END IS NIGH!'s success has been built on the hard work of its army of contributors. From comic strip artists to feature and short story writers to people who chuck in the odd joke or two â?? they all make it the fantastic magazine it is! So why not join their ranks? We're on the look out for the following things:

Comic strips
We need writers and artists for comic strips from one page to six pages in length â?? get your ideas in print and your work seen by an audience the crosses genres and spans the globe! And don't just go for the easy old ideas â?? go crazy! After all, it is the end of the world ;)

Features
We need feature writers to explain all the latest, biggest and scariest End of the World scenarios â?? is there a scary new cult on the apocalyptic map? What's the latest thing scientists are saying will end all life on Earth? What new vision of Armageddon is being preached from the pulpit? What horrors does our planet, our solar system, or our own warped minds have in store for us? All ideas  for features up to 1,000 words in length considered!

Spot illustrations
You don't have to do a strip for the next issue â?? why not let your imagination go mad with some spot illustrations? There will be features that need a visual to grab the reader's attention â?? your work could bring those words to life! Each issue needs dozens and dozens of images to illustrate our wide range of content. Get the chance to show off with some designs of your own!

Cartoons
The End of the World is no laughing matter â?? unless you read THE END IS NIGH! Got an apocalyptic gag that you want to share? Well make our readers laugh away their post-Millennial fears with a cartoon. Don't worry if you can't draw â?? we can put you in touch with artists to bring your sense of humour to the page!

Short stories
A budding Asimov or are you more John Wyndham? Bring your vision of the End of the World to life in your own words. We want to hear your pitches for short stories up to 1,500 words â?? just send a rough plot to submission@endisnigh.co.uk

Graphics
A whizz with the ol' Photoshop and Illustrator? Get in touch and put your design skills to making the apocalypse happen on every page!

News
Doomwatch needs you! Remember to keep submitting any news stories you see about the End of the World! Whether it's the latest environmental scare or news of the next asteroid with a one-way ticket for Earth, let us know via our blog at http://end-is-nigh.blogspot.com/ or by e-mailing a link to doomwatch@endisnigh.co.uk

Donâ??t worry if you donâ??t have an idea â?? we can match you with writers or artists who can help bring your work to the page! Just drop us a line, tell us a bit about yourself and weâ??ll see how you can contribute to the smash hit of the small press scene!

And please don't hesitate to ask if you have an idea, a suggestion or a question to submissions@endisnigh.co.uk  - we're here to help!

Cheers

Sugar/coffee dealers ...

I miss them, and would like to see Dredd busting some dealer heads on the streets soon.

What other superfluous Dredd world detail would you like to see a return of?
