Good, very good list so far. Delighted to see Sinister Dexter place so high. While they are much higher for me the bad press they get these days mean that this is a great finish for them.

A nice mixer of old classics and new thrills.

Right on, nice to see The Dead Man on there. One of the greats. And agreed Sinister Dexter are mondo cool.

Great to see SiniDex so high on the list. And what do all the others have in common that SiniDex doesnt..? Oh yes, attractive paperback collections, presenting all the stories in order. Bah.

I am not the biggest SinDex fan but I would grab a collection of the early works since this is a big partt of what I missed during my hiatus.

I think the problem is as Sinister Dexter is such a flexible format for story there's just not as much incentive to do a 'complete' collection. Well aside from the fact IT'S ACE!

Well that and sales I imagine.

I still find it strange that you do not really get any collections of SinDex. For a strip running for such along period it must be popular, so why no collections?

I just love SinDex. Don't understand all the naysayers.

Over on the other Internet place there was a recent question as to whether Dan Abnett should write Dredd. Why should he when Sinister Dexter is such a flexible format and allows for all the sorts of stories you can do with Dredd, from comedy one offs, short multi parters to epics?

I'm pretty sure what the top 3 will be. Question is, will there be a surprise in terms of the order? What I mean is, there is one thrill I would have picked before the start to be the winner, but I'm not so sure the voting has gone that way.
Title: Re: RESULTS -The Galaxy’s Greatest Top 20 Series - Tournament
Post by: Colin YNWA on 04 August, 2020, 10:06:53 AM
Yeah the top three are predictable - the order though could be fascinating.

Its great to have a recent (well I still consider Brink recent) in the top 10. We can be a tied and conservative bunch (small 'c', small 'c') us comic fans so that warms the cockles.

I think if we do the same for the Meg a recent thrill will have an even bigger impact maybe?

Oh and also its a shame, but probably compleltely predictable that only one self contained story has made the top 20 and that one is arguably an extension of a very long running series.

It goes to show that while the done and gone thrills of folks like John Smith have a massive impact they don't have the time to work their ways into our hearts the way longer running stories do. I found that with my own list.

With multiple stories a series has always a better change. A self-contained stories must be really special.

I will also publish the complete list tomorrow plus the total points.  Yip the top was close, very close.....

Yes I'm pretty sure a current series will come out on top in a Meg poll. But to be fair, I don't think there is the depth of quality in the Meg compared to the Prog.

I dunno - about a third of my choices were of that ilk. Mind you, almost half of my choices were either Smith or Milligan - two big proponents of that format.

Wow - well my first immediate reaction is I was not expecting that order at the top at all. I assumed Johnny A would win with probably Nikolai second.

That's really interesting! But man was that close!

When I started this my prediction was:

1. Strontium Dog (with a landslide victory)
2. Nemesis (put this second since the love on this forum for the warlock)
3. Halo Jones (this is Alan Moore people what more reason)
4. Nikolai Dante
5. Slaine

We voted for Torquemada! We voted for Termight! We voted with zeal!

I also assumed it'd be Johnny with gold and Nemesis with silver - and yes, I thought there'd be quite a gap between them. If asked prior to the tournament, I'm not sure I'd have even expected Nikolai to break the top 5 - there's a plenty of people who really don't like Dante - but he does so quite commandingly.

Not bad you got the series right if not the placings. I'm always a little surprised that Slaine sustains its appeal. Its had some damned fine highs, has (almost) always been beautiful to look at, but damn it can be a chore to read at times. Still lots of folks love it so that has to be celebrated, especially when you think how long its been going.

The following illustrate the total number of people voting for their favorite thrill. Clearly Strontium Dog in that regard should have won:

1). Strontium Dog (8)
2). Nikolai Dante (5)
3). Nemesis the Warlock (4)
4). Halo Jones    (2)
5). Slaine (1)
6). ABC Warriors (1)
7). Bad Company (1)
8). Indigo Prime (1)

The biggest plus for Slaine will always be The Horned God. This is certainly one off the best pieces of comic ever published. I recently re-read the complete The Brutania Chronicles, it works beautifully in one sitting. I struggle to understand why people have stop loving Slaine.

Some turniphead.

As for Slaine - this has been observed before, but after The Horned God, Slaine shifted from being a prestige series, whose appearance was a big deal, into a far more regular fixture that at one point was barely out of the prog (particular under Dave Bishop's editorship - he wanted Pat to focus all his creative energies on Slaine and Slaine alone.) I think a lot of readers suffered from Slaine fatigue at that point - I did, and I'm quite sure even Pat did - and fell completely out of love with the series in its contemporary form.
Title: Re: RESULTS -The Galaxy’s Greatest Top 20 Series - Tournament
Post by: broodblik on 05 August, 2020, 08:46:16 AM
I was disappointed after Horned God that we did not get more Slaine (at that stage it was my favorite thing in the prog). I might be in the minority but I never ever found any Slaine series that I did not like. Slaine accordingly to me is Mills best work except maybe Charley's War.
Title: Re: RESULTS -The Galaxy’s Greatest Top 20 Series - Tournament
Post by: Greg M. on 05 August, 2020, 08:58:52 AM
The Horned God seemed a natural end to the series, and the subsequent time-travel stuff became interminable. This also coincided with a time when Pat was at his most polemical, and it started to turn into the Pat Mills Historical Lecture Tour. I'm willing to accept that post-Secret Commonwealth, the series gets back on its feet, but I couldn't get on with Langley's art.

Yeah I think I found that my biggest barrier. As I've said elsewhere I love Langley (with Mills funnily enough) on ABC Warriors but on Slaine not so much.

I think its more than that though until the Brutania Chronicles recently I don't think it had anything new to say (say the chap who loves Sinister Dexter so ya know...) it was just there and sometimes I felt badly scripted. But rather than focus on that I should just be happy that clearly for so many folks its still a great thing and as ever with 2000ad viva la difference

Before the start I also expected Strontium Dog to be the landslide winner.

As for Slaine, I voted for it based on its highs and ignored the lows. As I did for other series. It remains, alongside Nemesis, Dredd, Stront and ABC Warriors, the series that made the biggest impact on me.

Personally I prefer the Glenn Fabry black and white era to the Horned God.

For me Nemesis also has tremendous high points, perhaps the highest ever in the Prog. But for me the later series weren't as good. (But as I say I'm ignoring that).

For overall sustained quality I can't see beyond Stront and its by what I am assuming are the two most beloved creators. Given that, it's a surprise it's not top. (I guess a different points system could also have resulted in that i.e. giving even more weight to first places).

Yes, it is quite difficult to find a balanced point system where higher ranking numbers get a bigger potion of the points.

Looking back at the points for each first and second place vote, there's not a massive difference, so I'm guessing that Nemesis picked up a lot of 4-10th place rankings compared to Alpha and that carried the day.

I also voted focussing on the high points for various series. The good parts were usually very good indeed!

Thanks for running this. Fascinating stuff!

Yeah stirling job as ever Broodblik. BIG thanks for all the effort that's gone into this and the other tournaments you've run.

In contrast with others I tended to balance the rough with the smooth. So Strontium Dog is a great example. There are times when its been as good as anything that's ever been in the Prog - Rage and Portrait of... amongst others. There are also times when it just doesn't hit those highs, never bad by any stretch I should note, but I marked it considerably down on that basis though.

Similarly I think Nemesis, even at its lowest was pretty amazing and at its highest up with Rage, Incident Mayjer Minor etc. Maybe...maaayyybbeee a little ahead. Simiarly Dante - which got my top spot, has highs as high as any other thrill ever has and its lows are pretty damned high as well and of the three, for me, is by far the most consistently mindblowingly good. It also has the advantage of just getting better and better as it went on.

Oh gosh not wishing to attach slings and arrows I'm not big fan* of The Bitch, Max Bubba (which I always want to call Ragnarok) nor Outlaw. Just to select a few of the longer more 'obvious' choices.

*Again these things are relative they are all decent, just I think Strontium Dog can have a tendancy to over run an idea.

I share your sentiment around Nikolai Dante, for me personally this is the greatest series ever to grace the pages of the prog. What makes this such a great series is that we have a lovable self-centered character that grows into something much bigger than himself. Great supporting cast. A love story. A story of war and remembrance. Lastly is that we have two great villains in the story.

What counted in Nemesis favor was the total number two votes it received.

If you want number two's picking up then Ro-Jaws is your droid!

Ba dum TISH!

Fascinating results indeed. Nemesis is certainly iconic and did well to beat a tough crowd!

I was a bit surprised at Robohunter (Sam) being a bit lower than I expected though. Yup.

Wow, missed voting (I think!). Nemesis is great, but top, what do I know!

Stront way out on front for me.

These comps are great guys, thanks for organising!
