Links / Fantagraphics Kickstarter
06 November, 2013, 10:26:27 PM
Apologies if this has been posted before, but Roger asked me to post a link to the Fantagraphics kickstarter which is currently taking place.

Fantagraphics is a publisher of alternative comics - Black Hole, Palestine, Love and Rockets - as well as anthologies of classic comic strips like Peanuts, Krazy Kat, and E.C. Segar's Popeye.  They've published work by many famous cartoonists and their collections are always produced to a very high standard of quality.

The company has had numerous problems with money over the year, and the recent death of co-founder kim Thompson has only added to their financial woes. So if you can spare a little money, why not support one of the few publishers that doesn't focus on superheroes, superheroes, and superheroes?

Sorry if this has already been spotted, but I was reading my Metro herald today when I spotted a rather familiar image. This piece of art is currently on display in the Balla Bán Gallery  in Dublin.

Loving tribute or blatant tracing? You decide!

Link to the website, in case the image doesn't show up.

Off Topic / 12th June 2012

Today is my birthday.

It's 29 years ago today that I entered a state of distress and had to be sliced out of my mothers belly.

It's hard to believe so much time has passed. Back when I was young I felt like I had all the time in the world to do the things I wanted to do. My plans were modest, but they felt all the more achievable for that.

But what about all those plans I made?

The website - never constructed, the webcomic - never created, the game - too complicated, being published in 2000AD - never wrote a submission.

For me, it was always tomorrow. I'll start it tomorrow, I'll finish it tomorrow, I'll know what to do tomorrow. Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow.

Except I'm nearly 30 now. Tomorrow will never come. I need to get started now - or I'll never achieve anything. I'm two posts away from Post 5000 and I'm definitely going to make something to commemorate the occasion. And I will do something, I really will.

But maybe... I'll do it tomorrow. Today's my birthday after all.

Games / Mari0 is released
05 March, 2012, 09:14:42 PM
I've been looking forward to this one. Mari0 is Mario Bros. but with a portal gun!

The basic concept sounds fun enough, but the developers even added multiplayer AND a level editor. Pretty cool.

Free download plus nifty trailer here!

Games / Looking to buy a gaming desktop.
28 December, 2011, 04:00:09 PM
With the new VAT rate looming and the flooding in Thailand about to do its part to jack up prices, I've decided the time is ripe for getting a new gaming desktop. I'd like to get a decent one that can handle all the fancy modern games, as I've always been a few years behind everyone else up to now.

I'm hoping a kindly boarder can offer some guidance as to whether there's anything out there that'll do the job. Unfortunately, building one (or even upgrading one) is well beyond my meagre intellect and the pre-built models seem to be both overpriced and under-powered.

The best option I've found so far seems to be the HP Pavilion HPE h8-1170uk from PC World, as it has an Intel I7 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 2TB Hard Disk. But I'm not sure about the graphics card (NVidia GT 545), as it seems to be underpowered.

Help?  :(

Not sure if this has been posted before, but it's definitely worth a repost.

This sounds like a really brilliant idea that combines the best bits of both games! Looking forward to this!

Games / Team Fortress 2 now free to play.
24 June, 2011, 08:47:55 PM
If you enjoy playing online games, or have been wanting to give them a go, then you may be interested to know that Team Fortress 2 is now free to play!

Personally, I think it's a pretty good game, even if it has outgrown my PC somewhat, largely due to all the free updates it's received over the years. So why not give it a go?

Who knows, you may even end up fighting alongside one of your forum bodies (or bludgeoning them to death)!

More info here.

And don't forget to "Meet the Medic"!

Off Topic / String.
30 May, 2011, 07:58:38 PM
I've been thinking about string lately. Bronw strign mainly.

I use to see a lot of it on the ground as a kid, when I was walking across the wasteland to the newsagents. There's always be little bits of it dotted here and there around the place.

Nowadays I hardly see it at all.

Has anyone got any theories as to where the string came from (people opening bundles of newspaper in a field)? And how come I don't see it anymore (Is it just because I'm further from the ground now, or has string become osolete)?

Off Topic / Boarders with superpowers

I saw a similar post to this on another forum.

Basically, you just go to this page, and press the button marked "random page".

Whatever comes up is now your superpower. What will it be? How will you use it? For good or for evil?

I got Matter Melding.

QuoteThe ability to graft, meld, mix, or fuse any type of matter together. A variation of Elemental Manipulation.

Clearly, a burgeoning career in the construction or pharmaceutical industry awaits me.

And if that doesn't work out I can always fuse a bunch of stray animals and orphans together and create a travelling freakshow. What a great power!

From this day forth, I shall be known as Meldo!

Off Topic / Tokyo bans dodgy anime and manga.
07 February, 2011, 11:18:31 PM
No doubt all you otaku types are aware of this, but crusading governer Shintarō Ishihara has passed a law banning any Anime or Manga "likely to interfere with the healthy development of youth". In other words, any work that contained underage sex, graphic violence, gratuitous nudity, homosexuality, incest etc. etc.

So basically they're banning all Anime and Manga.

The law encountered very little opposition from most political parties, though the Democratic Party of Japan heroically refused to support the law until a passage criminalising the possession of actual child pornography was removed.

Brilliant!  :D

An entire culture devoted to insanity?!

Off Topic / So bad it's good.
04 January, 2011, 03:40:28 AM
There are two kinds of people in the world.

Those that believe in the entertainment value of terrible films, and those that don't. Those that believe in the concept of "so bad it's good", and those that don't.

In the year 2011 I have finally been able to decide definitively which group I fall into.

If you want to do the same, then follow this link to discover the truth!

NOTE: If you're having trouble with the time limit, just turn OFF your router and turn it back ON again, then pick up where you left off.

General / Last to the party

This is a thread for people to confess all the jokes or references in the progs that they didn't get until years later. Ro-jaws and Hammerstein seems to be a popular one, for instance.

For myself, I was recently thumbing through Case-Files 5 and was reading the opening pages of "Judge Death Lives". The tour guide says: "Over here we have the uniform of Judge Hurst, the inventor of the flesh disintegrator. He will be remembered." Up until that point I had never realised the glaringly obvious joke that was being made.

So what stuff did you only figure out recently?

Off Topic / Question for Irish broadband users
21 October, 2010, 05:21:58 PM
As you may know, Eircom recently dumped a load of its users onto their new "Next Generation Broadband" service, which basically means that we all get saddled with a 30GB download/upload limit. If we go over this limit we get a substantially inflated phone bill for our temerity.

So I guess my question is: Are there any better service providers out there? From what I've heard, other providers are having trouble even providing stable connections or workable speed levels. Of course this is mainly Eircom's fault too, since they own most of the lines, but this is little comfort.

If there are no better providers out there, what, in your opinion, is the "best" package available from Eircom? Are we stuck with our current payment plan?

Yours sincerely,

Jared.

Games / Minecraft free - for now.
20 September, 2010, 09:34:37 PM
The strange, but apparently very addictive game Minecraft is currently free to play.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for games with lots of digging in them.

Minecraft.

And here's a bit of gameplay. Narrated by some German guy!
