I was wondering how can there be any troggies left in the Undercity anymore. What with werewolf attacks, vampiric civilisations, being used for growing aliens and now having their heads replaced by robots in this month's Meg, there can't be that many of them left down there.

House of Usher

So long as plots require them, there will always be Troggies. The writers ought never to estimate or reveal the size of the Troggie population, because that would raise the possibility of their total annihilation by a sufficiently tough supernatural nemesis.

At the moment we don't know what the current Troggie population is, the quantity of food mass it takes to sustain them and where it comes from, or indeed the habitable square mileage of the undercity.

This may call for another exercise in Space Maths, much of which is inevitably contingent upon how big the undercity is and the population density that's inferred.

I'll start the bidding by estimating the area to be less than half but at least a tenth that of the city above. Personally, I'd estimate the undercity to be about a tenth the size of Mega-City one, and a lot less densely populated.

Probably the most densely populated undercity neighbourhood I've seen is the one where Dredd encountered Fergee, King of the Big Smelly during his days as a rebel fugitive.

I think there would always be new people added constantly: runaways, escaping perps etc would be a source of new blood, often literary !!

wonder fi they come under the mutie acsess act (MAA)?

Look away now, Floyd!

Have to say, I loved the insanity of the robo-troggies, a noble addition to the positively silly weirdness of the Undercity - what fun Tempest is!

Buttonman

The under city has never really been defined - we know it covers Manhattan as Dredd has driven down Broadway, but Manhattan is just a small island compared to Mega City One which covers the whole eastern seaboard.

Doesn't really make sense really - why cement over Manhattan when you plan to build a new city? Why not just build on the mainland and work inland where the land is plentiful?

satchmo

I've always thought that the undercity was an accidental byproduct of the Big Meg's construction, and it sits inside giant air bubbles and defects in the concrete above. I think about these things too much :)

SamuelAWilkinson

Fucking big defects.
Nobody warned me I would be so awesome.

satchmo

Yeah I mean like really huge fucking big defects. I'm gonna pour custard on a lego town and test my theory!

Nice use of "inferred" there, Ush.

I miss the super-cool 50s-style troggies, daddy-o!

i reckon troggies are like rats or cockroaches.
try as you might. they seem to come back.

you have lulls in their numbers.but just you think you can relax. AND THEY RETURN,
or if your under deadline for a mortgage payment as a writer that could be an easy mark for a return.
