Title: RIP W. R. Logan
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 21 May, 2016, 04:46:11 PM
It's with great sadness that I have to inform the forum that our very own W. R. Logan aka Stewart Perkins has passed away this morning, while stationed in Norway.

I've just finished talking to his girlfriend Deborah and that's the only information that she knows at the moment in time. As she becomes aware of more information, then she will pass it on and I'll post it up here.

For those who don't know, Stewart helped John Wagner out whenever he needed any facts, basically he was his encyclopedia of Dredd. For his help John kept torturing Judge Logan in the Dredd strip and I'm lucky to have a page of Dredd with Logan in it, minus his arm.

Stewart did a lot of work for the 2000 AD groups in the early days of the internet and was well known for his Class of '79 chat group on Yahoo.

A frequent visitor to conventions and all the Dreddcons. I can still see him sat outside a cafe with Colin MacNeil, while waiting for the Pub to open for Dreddcon 6.5.

The last time I saw him was when himself and Deborah came to one of the Southern Contingent Gatherings last year and we all had a blast.

To say I am shocked is an understatement and I shall raise a glass to my good friend tonight.

Farewell Stewart, you will be missed xxx

Oh no, that's just awful, unbelievably sad news. I never met Stewart in real life, but his online persona has been part of 2000AD fandom for as long as I was aware of it, and latterly part of the Prog itself, and I will miss his wonderfully grumpy and unmatched Dredd expertise terribly. La Placa Rifa, Class of '79,  YT-2, William R Logan, KTT: a stickler.

My deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and cadets. Rest in peace, Stewart, you will be remembered.

Jesus, what a shock.

Stewart was always prickly but a worthy online adversary and always well informed and well intentioned.

I hope he died doing what he loved and he will be remembered by all.

Safe journey Stewart!

Sad news - I remember Stewart principally from alt.comics.2000ad, where he was a central figure when I first dipped my toe into online fandom. Came across as very much a no-bullshit, knowledgeable guy whose enthusiasm drove many projects forward.

We just lost one of the good guys. One of us. The first 2000AD superfan.

I had many a laugh with Stewart at comics events, swapping smokes and beering like professionals. He had that amazing grin. He brought his granny to Moniaive, and she was puzzled by being called Granny Logan all weekend. He loved the weirdness and fun in everything.

Just last week he was wishing me a happy birthday, still posting "my liege" or whatever silliness on Facebook. I'm having some difficulty with this. It seems unreal.

Awful news. One of the first things I did when I got on the Internet all them years ago was sign up to the Class of '79 news group and he was a mainstay during my early years on this forum. Never met the man, but he was as true a fan as you could want and a pleasantly Grumpy Fucker- RIP Logan and condolences to his family and friends.

There's a terrible, sad truth behind this. And it's something behind the veil on anonymity we often fail to acnowledge, and it's that we are all real people with real and fullfiling lives to go with us. And this, oh man, absolutely devastating and quite, quite sobering. Logan was one of the longest standing members of the 2000AD fandom, and one of the earliest folk to welcome me to the forum and community. Tragic, deeply upsetting. My thoughts go out to his family. Thank you for telling us this, Commando Forces.  :'(

RIP Logan

Bit stunned. Knew Stewart for 20years, was there when he first suggested, 'shall we do a fanzine'? And saw the birth of W.R. Logan. Been drunk too many times to count and once slept in the back of an estate car with the man so we could meet John Wagner the next day. He said I snored, I still don't believe him.

Stewart was a great storyteller and he could spin a life-yarn that would have you in stitches. He did a hell of a lot in his time from hard circumstances and I have nothing but respect for th guy. Really can't believe this has happened...

All the best, mate, you will be missed.

Awful, sad news.

I knew Stewart in passing since the early Bristol cons and the beery pub/bar nights that would follow.

He was always happy to acknowledge me and have a chat even with years between meetings, seeing and him at the Southern meet up last year was great.

He was one of the forum contributors whose comments I would always read on any thread.

My thoughts and condolences go with his family and we'll raise a beer (or two) to him at the next meet up.

Again, very sad.

Been struggling to process this since I heard the news.

Deeply saddened by his death, and my heartfelt condolences to his other friends and family.

I've known Stewart for decades and he was my guiding light towards working for 2000AD through the class of 79. As grumpy as he could be online to others, in person he was a remarkably happy chap - ready with a vast smile, and a hearty laugh.

We shared hotel rooms, he would never knowingly turn down a request for some favour or other and to my shame, most of my email correspondence to him over the years involved me asking for favours of one sort or another. Though I think he was happy that he could trace my entire career back to class of 79.

I miss those early days of comic cons in the UK, sharing a room with Stu, using him for his flawless navigational abilities ("How the hell do you always know where you're going?" "Oh I turn up early and have a walk around first") and just generally hanging out in the pub sketching. Easily the best time of my life.

I miss you Stu.

La Placa Rifa.

Read about this on Facebook from Commandom of course. Sad news to hear, but this name doesn't sound familiar to me.

Yet, W.R. Logan....did he post here a lot in the past. I think I remember that.

Although it it's hard say much about somebody I haven't met face to face and that pretty much goes for the lot of you.

The circumstances make it sound like it was career related.

Logan was on of the first squaxx to welcome me onto this board many years ago. I think I named his fish in a competition he ran, Motor Pike and Side Carp, he was a force, a true Dredd fan and had an elephantine memory for all things Dredd. A grumpy twat online, and a wonderfully warm person in the flesh, he was the epitome of a true 2000AD fan. I'm quite numb at this news it's such a shock.

Can't quite get my head around this

I remember making long coach journeys to the London comic fair from Brum in the early 2000s(?), where Rufus, JT and Logan had a stand selling Class of 79..  I recall wondering how Rufus and JTs work was so good I couldnt imagine why they werent working for Tharg, and of course now both have/are!

To me he was always Logan, someone who knew his stuff - Like Dredd, I always had the notion that "Nothing impresses Logan" - laconic as his fictional hero.  This is incredibly sad news... I met him a good number of times, and he was 2000AD fandom for me in those early days of the internet.  May his Lawgiver always fire true

One of the earliest characters I recall from the board, he steered a chunk of the fandom and the fanzines that put more than just PJ on the comic-creator-monkey career path.

He didn't really seem that grumpy to me, but I'm glad what little grump there was, it was no reflection of him in real life.  My thoughts and condolences are with his family and those on the board who were lucky enough to know the non-grump described above.

I first met Logan on a 2000AD mail list, way back in 1998 or 1999. His Class of '79 was my inspiration for Mega City Tours. I always thought of Logan as a British version of myself. I've just been chatting to Deborah and due to the repatriation being undertaken by the USAF, nothing can happen until he's on home soil and at the moment the military will be contacting Deborah on Monday and we should know something then.

A couple of requests have been made for when the funeral dates are announced.

If anyone would like to draw a suitable picture, or pictures for the programme of Judge Logan, that would be most welcome.
If the comics world would like to send flowers, then something fitting, say perhaps a Dredd helmet and yes donations would be lovely but we will have to wait for the cause closer to the day, as obviously, things are all up in the air at the moment.
The final thing, would be a Logan Badge and I'll be contacting PR about that.

Again, as and when I hear more I will post it up.

It's no surprise that Stewart was the inspiration for Judge Logan - he had all the qualities a great Judge needs.

Condolences to his family and friends.

This is something worth breaking silence for.

I never met Logan, but I knew him from way back in the newsgroup days. When he found out that I lived a couple of miles down the road from him he was friendly enough to ask if I wanted to meet up for a pint and a natter. I declined the offer as I wanted to keep online life separate from real world life (about which he was entirely understanding, as I recall), but it's always been something of a regret.

The 'Origins' story was bound to happen sooner or later, but the reason it happened the way it did was because Logan was willing to pass on my ideas about Fargo and Booth to John Wagner. The fact that Logan was willing to do so, and involve me in some background checking, meant that I'm lucky enough to have my name on a Dredd story. For that, I'll always remember the guy.

Sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

Regards

Robin

Such sad and shocking news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Stewart, but W.R. Logan was a true legend, it was one of the first names I started to recognise when I first joined the forum and his posts showed his knowledge of Dredd was second to none, even John Wagner's.
My first ever sketch was of a badly beaten Judge Logan by MacNeil. Logan's recurring injuries is a tradition that I hope will continue in Stewart's honour.

Count me in for a donation towards a memorial project.

My deepest sympathies to all his friends and family.

Utterly, utterly stunned by this. I met Stewart a number of times at various comics events and I liked him a lot. He knew his stuff and he was a good guy. Gutted.

That's really sums him up Pete. Well done!

I've had one of the old regulars from these parts Peter Wolf contact me via twitter and he wanted to pass on the following message.

QuoteAnyways given my problematic+disruptive conduct on the forum back then+the fractious exchanges w/ WR Logan i met him once at a gathering+while i had reservations abt it i was amazed at how different he was+how pleasant he was to what i expected to happen felt this was worth pointing out and in doing so i offer my condolences to his friends+family+the forum

Heh, I was re-reading some of the old Logan/Wolf exchanges over the weekend. Crippen and Turk they weren't! Good to hear there was a happy ending of sorts, and classy of Peter to make that acknowledgement.

More generally, those archives make for some reading - both here and on dear old a.c.2000AD. Over and over you can see Logan just churning out the precise Dredd references and page after page of relevant scans to answer any queries. It's worth remembering that 'grumpy fucker' was a moniker he took for himself, and it was (almost) always used in good humour. Even while not suffering fools gladly, he was polite and to the point (at least at the start!).  Ní feicimid a leithéad ann arís.

Just heard this message on Twitter. I only ever met Logan once, at a Dreddcon over a decade ago, but this news still shocked me. He helped me out when I was writing a dissertation on 2000AD and I almost certainly didn't thank him (and everyone else who helped out) nearly as much as he deserved.

RIP.

Still immensely shocked and saddened after hearing this on Saturday. Stewart was a great bloke and as well as knowing him from way back at the time of the alt.comics.2000ad newsgroup and then the messageboard, I had the pleasure of sharing several pints with him at various conventions over the years. As well as being a fount of Dredd knowledge, he was also one of the very few people who pronounced my nickname correctly from the off (with a hard s and not as 'Wilz').

Mine and Malchi's hearts go out to Deborah and his family at what must be a devastating time for them.

Farewell, Logan. May your Lawgiver always fire true.

A lovely guy, and the soul of 2K fandom, really. I was going to say I have many happy memories of him at cons Dredd, Shed, etc, but it'd be more accurate to say I have one amorphous booze-stained smudge of half-remembered moments. Which I'm sure is how he'd want it. RIP Stewart.

An update on the flowers for Stewart. I've just come back from the florist and she will do a flat Dredd helmet, with lightning flashes and a ribbon underneath with Judge Logan on for him and all she will need is 4 days notice to complete. This will cost £120

If anyone would like to make a donation towards these, then my paypal is john.burdis@hotmail.co.uk and if you could mark it up with Judge Logan, or something similar, then that would be cool.

And anything left over will go towards the chosen charity

What Dave said. Met Stewart a couple of times, at a Con or two and the first Southern Contingent meet ups. He was a great guy to have a beer with and talk all things 2000ad - and anything else that wandered into the conversation. Also, he would have time for you even if that was the first time you'd met. That goes a long way with me.

Stephen I didn't meet, but the one memory I do have of him is opening endless indie comics and seeing his name in the credits over and over again "That guy is on art in here too? Does he sleep?"

Anyway. Just doesn't seem right that decent people don't get to last.

Just this moment finished speaking to Deborah and the latest news is that the post mortem is on Tuesday and until that has happened, everything is up in the air. Cause of Death is unknown at this moment.

The funeral will not take place any earlier than the week commencing the 6th of June.

That is all that is known at the moment.

EDIT:- Obviously this is all up in the air until he arrives back.

I heard the news elsewhere, but this seemed the logical place to write something. Now I'm here I don't know what to say, except what so many of you have already said. Stewart was generous with his time, his knowledge and even his own comics. His complete command of Dredd lore came with no attitude of superiority, in fact he was one of the easiest people to get on with and very funny. You know all this. I feel lucky to have had drinks with him on a few occasions. I liked him a lot.

Thank you John Burdis for keeping us informed as far as possible. And PJ, that pic is a beauty.

Most upsetting to read the tragic news on Saturday night. I first knew of W. R. Logan from the Class of '79 fanzine. Back in those early days of the internet, when information on anything 2000AD related was scarce – it was a treat to come across that gem of a fanzine and the 2000ad.nu Class of '79 (http://web.archive.org/web/20021227175437/http://www.2000ad.nu/classof79/website.htm) website (I wasn't aware of the newsgroups though I used to plough through the 2000AD webring). Only when I joined this forum did it became apparent to me just how influential W. R. Logan was to 2000AD and its fandom.

My deepest condolences go to Stewart's family and friends.

Thanks for letting us all know, John.

I won't say I knew the man well, or really at all, but for my time here he was always a presence. And always helpful for that obscure bit of lore. And the way he was written into the comic we all love made him to be the kind of fan we all wish we could be. He will be missed.

Reading through this thread it's clear he had a similarly big impact on everyone here. Awful news.

Thanks for the update, John.

Heart attack... bloody hell. If there's anything good to come out of this, I hope that's one or two of us who are about the same vintage might look a little harder at our fondness for beer and/or fags and/or fry-ups.

(I'm perpetually mindful on this point, since my Dad had a heart attack that nearly killed him when he was only a year older than I am now.)

Go to your GP if you don't regularly do so. Get your blood pressure and your cholesterol checked. Take regular exercise, even if it's just leaving the car at home for a couple of short journeys each week and walking instead.

Cheers

That's so sad, I guess as we hit the mid to late forties then the chances of cardio disease climb quickly.  A good friends hubby went similarly at 49, he didn't know he had the weakness.

So sad.  Was he military still CF or doing a civi job?  (I wonder as you mentioned USAF bringing him back?).

And I just wanted to repeat what the others have said.  Get checked and stay active.  My dad had been a very active man until functional blindness meant he couldn't get out much, sadly within ten years he'd dies of heart failure.    It worries me as I have high cholesterol but have had a reaction to every drug I've ever taken.  I try my best to exercise regularly, not drink much and not smoke to help myself a bit.

As a heart patient myself I can confirm diet and fags aren't always the cause - it could just be a congenital defect that hadn't been detected. I've never smoked and was quite fit but I took a turn at 42 and ended up with a defibrillator. Mine was a tachycardia rather than a heart attack which is more often due to clogged arteries but I expect the effect was the same. I hope Stewart went out like a light and ended up in a better place.

Hello all.

Some old faces, mostly new faces, all sad faces.

I knew Logan in the post-Co79/pre-Zarjaz days when we were active on alt.comics.2000ad. Like many of us on the board he was the first person I got to know due to his unofficial role as Meeter-and-Greeter-in-Chief, and we subsequently met in person many times during the years I was involved in small press.

Everything everyone has said here about Stewart rings true. I remember him as being the ultimate expert in all matters 2000AD, more so than any self-professed uber-geek, yet he wore his passion lightly: he was (how strange and terrible the tense) as far from a 'comics nerd' as you could imagine. He made it acceptable for a bloke in his 30s to be into comics, which was a considerably more difficult feat then than it is now.

He always had a good story: some implausible, some unprintable, some (like the one about the 2000AD pinball machine) which can only be passed on by word of mouth in a pub, but there was one story he told me about his Army days which I will repeat here as it is easy to imagine him at its centre.

He was stationed in Cyprus manning a checkpoint in the UN Buffer Zone. One day, a message comes down from on high that a senior officer from a foreign force (Italy was suspected) hadn't been properly saluted when visiting one of the checkpoints. Apparently he'd been in a helicopter at the time so no-one could have known, however protocol is protocol - especially in the Army - so the order went out that in future soldiers on duty should stand to attention facing any approaching helicopters and salute until the machine departed, turning to keep face-on. This, of course, gave carte-blanche to all the pilots to buzz checkpoints, flying in circles, watching the soldiers slowly screwing themselves into the dirt. The thought of him pirouetting on top of a hill with blasphemy of the finest quality and a prodigious quantity issuing from his pursed lips always makes me smile.

I've dined out on that story a number of times and for that, and for everything else that has been said about him, I'd like to thank him. I should have told him, of course. I sorely wish I'd kept in touch after I quit small press, but I didn't. More fool me.

My utmost condolences to his family.

Nigel

Any word on the preferred charity/charities now that things are moving, John?

Just following up on this, John. Has there been any word, yet?

Regards

Jim

The latest news as of late last night is that Stewart has still not been repatriated. Until he has been, nothing is finalised.
Once he's home, then the family will announce everything.

Bloody hell, what an ordeal for his loved ones. I would have thought there would be established systems to expedite this sort of horrible business.

This is absolute horrendous and my heart goes out to family and friends at this time.  That said it is not all that uncommon.  It only takes a minor legal issue for everything to fall apart.  Been a very long time since I've been involved in this sort of thing and it was never pleasant.  I hope for all concerned that things get sorted soon.

Well it's been a while... so long that I've long forgotten my old log in details.

Like everyone else I was shocked and saddened by the news of Logan's death. Dreddcons and especially Shedcons - where he would turn up with a load of original art and other goodies for the raffle - would not have been anyway near as fun without him. Always found him to be a standout solid honest generous guy. I've re-told his tattoo story many a time and will no doubt again in the future - whilst in the army, very drunk he went into a tattoo parlour with a mate and they both picked a tattoo by drunkenly and randomly pointing at the tatss displayed on the wall... Logan got a lion with a union jack, his mate got the pink panther. Logan also a home made tat from the drinking club he was in the army - that he would be proudly display at Dredd/Shedcons.

Really can't believe he's gone and the first to join Sheard in the great pub in the sky. RIP mate.

One other thing... does anyone know his DOB or at least the year he was born? It's for an obituary.

All the information about Stewart's funeral is now known and I've made another thread, so no-one misses it, if they wish to go.

Here's the thread STEWART'S FUNERAL SERVICE (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php?topic=43383.0)

very nice to see Harry Heston in the Meg - just realised that the Meg's previous talking gorilla was named Perkins - coincidence or tribute?

I'm not sure if this will work but here's something I asked Rakie Ayola, the Chief Judge if she would do for his loved ones and she obliged. Press on the picture and it should take you to the video
