Title: Glasgow Comic Con 2016
Post by: Tiplodocus on 16 October, 2015, 09:10:28 PM
So apparently it's moving to the Concert Hall next year so everything will be under one roof.

CCA will still be 'a hub' showing films and stuff In the run up.

Sounds like good news to me - especially for those who were stuck up in the art school.

Excelsior! As they say.

Now that's a nice prospect. Look forward to the droids filling the main hall for their panel(s).

There had better be a bar. That's the best bit!
Saramango Bar is part of the Con experience!

Will be coming through for this one, I believe Dode C is up for it too, new venue sounds better hope it doesn't lose the intimacy of the one hall.

Hopefully this will be a big enough venue to accommodate all as much as I like the CCA its all getting a bit cramped.

Also Bolland or GTF!

The history of comics will be on at the Hunterian:

http://www.gla.ac.uk/hunterian/visit/exhibitions/exhibitionprogramme/comicinvention/#d.en.410343 (http://www.gla.ac.uk/hunterian/visit/exhibitions/exhibitionprogramme/comicinvention/#d.en.410343)

'Taking us from the world's oldest comic to Donald Duck and Dr Dread, Comic Invention also reveals new material central to the history of comics.
Looking at the graphic narrative in its widest sense, the exhibition showcases treasures from The Hunterian and beyond, from the ancient Greeks to Hogarth and contemporary items.
Comic Invention also highlights a very important but little known work called The Glasgow Looking Glass of 1825 (pictured). Arguably the world's oldest comic, it predates titles like Punch by sixteen years.'

So the Jocks did invent comics Yah!

What's wrong with paypal? You can also buy over the counter from the CCA if that helps.

Will the CCA be selling tickets?  It's being used for some events in the week leading up to the con, but the actual con is at the Royal Concert Hall this year.

Their site suggests the CCA is fine for all tickets.
8-Ball, give the CCA a ring if you're averse to PayPal and don't pass the CCA.

Aye it states on their website you can book in person or over the phone. However from past experience they may not have told the CCA that

A few weeks ago my dad had his Paypal account hacked by some guy in Pakistan (I'm not making this up) so after all the hassle of trying to get that sorted out for him I'm a little wary about giving Paypal any of my banking details. It was just more convenient to go onto the GCC site and pay for a ticket without having to set up accounts and all that stuff. Anyway, it looks like I'll just pop along to the CCA and pick up a ticket there.  ;)

OK. Now I'm confused. I went into the CCA this morning and purchased what I thought was a ticket for GCC... then by the time I got home I had received a confirmation email from CCA - which stated:

"Thank you for your purchase from CCA. Please note that all tickets should be collected from CCA Box Office - they will not be mailed out.

Tickets should be collected at least 15 minutes prior to the event start time - in the case of free events, uncollected tickets may be released."

What the hell have I got if it's not a ticket? I give up. >:(

What he said.

The September one referred to is presumably this one - http://www.mcmcomiccon.com/scotland/ (http://www.mcmcomiccon.com/scotland/) - one of those 'comic cons' which, to my mind, isn't really a comic con at all.

But, hey ho, if you want to spend £20 getting your picture taken with some baldy bloke from a TV show about aucioneering, that's your look-out.

But that's before the inevitable one-by-one drop outs.

The Northern England contingent may be pathetically small, but at least we're upfront from the start  - the Southers have the numbers, the Scots are all talk and nae troosers!

The Floor plan is now on the official site so even though theres no list of exhibitors as yet you should be able to get an idea of whos there and where.

Hype rising!

I do love that GIF. I must get a copy of it one time.

I proudly acknowledge the fact that, come the day of the actual Con, there will be a lone boarder from Scotland wandering around the Royal Concert Hall cursing the complete lack of other squaxx.

It's almost traditional now.

We get extra points if it's a guest-Droid like Colin or Grennie.

Don't see what the problem is. You're only a 30 second walk from The Iron Horse.

When I was getting the bus to Edinburgh every morning, I thought about starting a photography project where I took a picture of the people who were drinking in The Iron Horse at 8am each morning. In the end I decided against it because there was very little change from day to day and I'd've got my face smashed in by the end of the first week.

Iron Horse you say, lets see what the reviews are like...
"Total horror show!"
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Whole place is rank, even the staff. I was in on Saturday night, they had karaoke on - the place was full of old skanks who thought they were the next Whitney Houston... only thing they had in common with her was the fact they were all rotten! Some people though it was ok just to lift our drinks for themselves and when we told the staff they couldn't care less. Total horror show - best avoid this dump!

A word of warning for folks doing the whole weekend, there will be a rail strike:

"The RMT said the planned strikes will be held between 00:01 and 23:59 on:

◾Sunday 3 July"

For more info check the Scotrail website to see if and how you might be effected if you are taking the train.

Sad to say CF, I will not be dropping out as this is the highlight of an otherwise shitty month  ;)

...Yeah the Iron Horse isnt the most recommended, but being Glasgow theres plenty of nearby Pubs, head down Buchanan Street to an alleyway next to Forbidden Planet theres Waxy O'Connors, an Irish style pub with 3-4 floors? take the Sauchihall Street route towards the old GCC venue (its not far) theres loads of pubs

*double post and shameless plug*

I'll be debuting a new comic at the Con - an action comedy titled Supermom.

Tagline: superhero Voltra is out to stop her archnemesis from taking over the world. There's just one problem: she's pregnant... and he's the father.

Quick pitch: it's Knocked Up meets the Incredibles.

More info and a wee preview can be found on the website: https://supermomcomicbook.wordpress.com/ (https://supermomcomicbook.wordpress.com/)

I have returned. There were so many boarders present that I had to leave to allow some space for the many late arrivals.

I arrived at 12 and met Dog Deever outside having a fag. If you are ever having an event invite Dog as he's recognizable from space.

Inside I immeditely bumped into Al Ewing who was gracious enough to stop for a chat and pretend he remembered our drunken conversation in Inverness. He exclusively revealed he has no 2000ad work in the pipeline but his return was "inevitable".

Upstairs I made for John Wagner and Alan Grant's table where they were promoting the excellent 'Rok of the Reds'. After purchasing both issues I produced my bag of books and had a chat about each.

John hadn't seen a copy of 'The Big Book of Martyrs' for a while and said it was a job for hire and he isn't overly religious. He added the wonderful dedication below for me :

He also signed my copy of 'Buttonman : The Killing Game' and said the movie prospects had dwindled and he may have to wait for the rights to revert back to him before pushing the project on.

He also signed my Hachette 'Origins' and said like the series but didn't agree with them selling America for 99p.

After more chat he asked if I was Buttonman and said he liked my food pictures - new one coming soon John!

I then shuffled to Alan Grant who after signing my comics said he'd more Anderson in the works but had spent a year on a specialized 500 page American project which he explained to me - sounded OK but the £100 price point on the books may be an issue!

I then met Tips and stood with him in the queue for Dave Gibbons and Frank Quietley for about 20 minutes. This was a waste of time as we later saw Dave in the bar with no queue at all. Still Tips got his 'The Originals' signed after waiting for a Burdis like man who had Gibbons sign his copies of 'Oink' and 'Nutty'.

The number of boarders was astounding so much so that only 8 managed into this pic - we also had Alex and Cosh and Tips who missed the photo so that's ELEVEN boarders in attendance - a number the Souther Softies can only dream about.

Here we have (L to R) Tiplidocus, Dode C, Satanist, MacRoth, Proudhuff, Buttonman, Fungus and Dog Deever.

The Con finished at 5 and apart from my 2000ad creator encounters I didn't do anything else apart from have lunch and drink in the bar. Next year I may just go to the bar.

The had evening drinks in the old venue, the CCA where Tips demonstrated his powers of being able to survive on a pile of grass clippings.

A fine day all round!

Recognised a few of the boarders( Dog Deever, Buttonman, Proudhuff and Judge MacRoth) sorry I didn't  say hello to anyone, I'm not doing very well socially since losing Ray. I was the dour faced bugger in the leather jacket and Grey Staples Dredd t-shirt and although I didn't show it, I enjoyed being there away from my usual environment and losing myself in the crowd.

Pity we didn't meet up Flippo and Judge Burns. We did spot the Dredd t-shirt but Tom was too shy to make friends. I did also see a black full Alpha t-shirt but the wearer looked too young to be one of us!

Saying that, sounds like you've all had a great time, which is the main thing.

Glad to bump into you and say hi properly flip-r mk2, sorry couldn't hang about, spent the majority of the day chasing a somewhat exited 4 year old, and trying to prevent him wrecking every stall full of 'kewel stuffs!'.

Did manage to pick up the 2000ad issues with Death Lives in for £4!  Then took 'em out to get the wonderful Grant and Wagner to sign 'em.  Expected a wee cost, but they did it for nowt, absolute gents!  Also picked up a wee sketch from Tom Foster, and a couple more signitures in my wee book of law.  Great thing is, every time someone does a wee sketch in there (all I ask for is an autograph) the next one to sign seems to want to go one better, lol!  So thanks to Al Ewing and Tom Foster for adding to the pages! :D

Sha Nazir, who's been running the Glasgow Comic Con since they started in 2011, announced over the weekend that he's stepping down to concentrate on his comic publishing business, Black Heart Press.

No word yet who, if anyone, will be taking over from him.  This might have been the last GCC for a while.

Met and said hello to Ghost MacRoth, Dog Deever, Proudhuff, Dode C and Satanist yesterday :) Sat next to Tiplodocus at the John Wagner talk, it wasn't until later that I realised I hadn't introduced myself and said hello to you Tips, so apologies for that. Hope there is one next year, because I'd definitely be there :)

Missed Filippo but I guessed my shunning of the Wagner talk was the reason. In my defence, Frank Quitely and Dave Gibbons were holding court at the same time and I was suitably entertained elsewhere. Isn't DG a slick bastard ?  :)

Highlight was catching up with some boarders, of course, and not just because there was a bit of a dearth of panels, being honest. They moved it to a grander venue and it took the shine off it. So GCC17 is in doubt ?  :-\

I did enjoy the point where one boarder picked up a mic to hurl abuse at the cosplayers. It's always the quiet ones.

Has no one mentioned the mohican?

I have decided to adopt the following as an acceptable swearing replacement in my house:

B.A. Baracus is going to be livid when he learns that someone has stolen his hair.

I didn't make it along to the con itself but managed to catch a bunch of the guys for a swift half on Saturday evening. They'd already had quite a few by then. The only pros I saw were the side of Dave Gibbons head and most of Alex Ronald.

I was also particularly distraught that Pete Wells hadn't made it North of the Wall as I'd brought this unique piece of original memorabilia for him to sign.

He still carries a Nintendo DS about with him, so time travel is a plausible explanation.

I don't want to cause a schism but are you saying I look older than him? Or surely I'd be coming forward in time? Plus it's a New 3DS XL do I could only have travelled from last year.

Anyway, I right enjoyed that - especially squeeing like a fanboy when Dave Gibbons came into the bar and laughing too much at some of the banter.

I thought that it lost a bit of its soul in its move away from CCA.  :(

Anyway had a great time meeting up with the usual (and some unusual) boarders, had a few beers and many laughs.

Got a great Punisher sketch from Goran Parlov and my youngest was thrilled with the Judge Death sketch he got from Tom Foster.

So if this is cancelled then what are we gonna do next year? Edinburgh (shudder)  ;)

I just knew I'd miss this, and sure enough. Despite having a flyer pinned up for weeks so's I don't forget. What a clown.

Then today I get an email from BHP asking me to complete a survey "even if you didn't attend" (Eh?). I might have even done so if either of the links weren't broken.

I need to prioritise!
