Delurking briefly to say that I hope everyone enjoys this one - plenty of late nights and last-minute fretting about this one, and it's definitely been the biggest reprint challenge so far, but I think it's turned out really well.

It's a cracking little tale that has a lot in common with Wagner & Grant's later work on The Thirteenth Floor, and Ortiz gets licence to really cut loose with everything he has, showing his facility for everything from romance to war, comedy and gothic horror.

If you order it, enjoy! If you don't order it... well, just order it! :-D

Paypal stole all my money so no Daemon for me, but having read this in the weeklies I can heartily recommend it.  The story is a bit out there and generally genre-defying with a couple of concepts that would later be revisited by the lads in The Judge Child Quest and City of the Damned, but it works on its own terms as well as being a great platform for Ortiz to let rip on a variety of genres and draw ladies in a manner you couldn't get away with in a kids' comic these days unless it was Vampirella or one of those Grim Pornography Tales things.
So buy it, you bastards - otherwise David won't keep going and I won't get that Kid Cops collection I want, and which the world needs.

I'm sure David will be sharing more pics later, but for now here's a little sample showing what was involved in the clean-up on this one. Reduced for web use and not representative of the final printing, but it shows why this one was such a challenge! As with good lettering, the idea is that this work should be invisible to a reader - and particularly here, that it shouldn't compromise the art - and they should only ever see the story and art, but here's a look behind the curtain!  :)

Thanks for all your hard work on this.

Quite. I think it's easy to overlook just how much of a challenge something like this is — with plain linework, clean-up is relatively easy, because it's (pun intended) black and white. You either want this thing or that thing to appear on the page, or you don't. With all these lovely grey washes, something as simple as tweaking the levels or the contrast to bring up the whiteness of the paper risks buggering up the grey tones in the art completely...

Excellent work.

Cheers

Jim

Yep, that's the difficulty with this type of artwork. With something like, say, The Dracula File, I could be aggressive with levels etc. to get the whites/blacks to pop (though even there it still needed a degree of manual "repainting" to remove scruff and tidy up blacks that had badly faded) and you can get more aggressive with sharpening/resampling tools to get the linework looking nice and crisp, but with this it meant blowing the detail and subtlety in the greywash.

Most pages therefore needed a gentle level adjustment to bring out as much of the white/blacks as possible, then there was nothing for it - if we wanted to preserve as much of the subtlety in the greywash as we could - but to go in at full magnification and "paint out" the areas of the page that were originally supposed to be white/black, preserving as much of the greywash as possible. I spent rather a long time staring at screen-size patterns of half-tone dots!  :)

What we do with these books will never quite match the quality of being able to work from fresh scans of the original artwork/film, but since that is long scattered to the winds we use what we have and work as hard as possible to present it in the best possible light. I've always been very impressed with the work Kathryn Symes does for Rebellion, and the approach and dedication she brings to her restoration jobs - often working from page scans too, where original film or art is damaged/missing - is the kind of target I like to aim for. Hopefully we hit it more often than not!

If any boarder wants to message me their postal address via the forum, I'll sub them the money for this and order them a copy. Pay me back when you're able. I've got a few quid to spare at the minute -- it'd be nice to do something positive for fellow forum members.

Thanks for the kind words. The lovely Hibernia folks deserve every penny they can get for their efforts, and I'd rather a forum member who'll really appreciate the book got a copy now that was ordered direct from them, rather than pay over the odds to someone on eBay down the line. Win-win, as far as I'm concerned.

Cheers! It was a bit of extra work adding back in details and - crucially - making them fit with what I felt Ortiz would have drawn beneath Eagle logos, black bars etc. and if it all works as intended it's only readers like yourself who will ever notice, but that's what I was aiming for. I think I've spotted your vids on YouTube too - lovely work on those collected editions!

Glad you like it, Richmond  :) Hopefully everyone else will too!

First glance, this is nicely done.  First purchase from Hibernia and this is professionally done. Reproduction is crisp and clear.  It truly does credit to Ortiz' artwork.  Well worth the money, thanks guys.

Woolly - no worries! David's said this before elsewhere and I agree: these are stories that stand up and that deserve to be seen again. With that in mind I'm glad to be able to help him out on the books, and I'm happy that people are enjoying them.

Tjm86 & Hawkmonger - great to hear yours have arrived and that you're happy with them!

Jim - My copy is on its way, so I'm in the same boat  :)

My copy arrived yesterday but I've been so tired I only noticed it on the mat this morning!

Another excellent publication from Hibernia. I appreciate the effort that's gone into the cleaning up of the scans. There's a nice attempt to do something different with the double page spread that starts the story that shows how much thought has gone into the book. The end-note is interesting too.

One thing that worried me about the house - where did the furniture go to when the floor slid back to reveal the swimming pool? I don't think the designers thought that through!
Title: Re: The House of Daemon out now!
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 18 July, 2015, 03:08:33 PM
Ha! Yes, Elliot's design for Villa Cassandra is... novel  :) The bit that always tickles me when I'm reading is the cost of the property - you'd barely get a nice little two-bedroom for that now, never mind a sprawling clifftop mansion!

The end note was something included after Jim was kind enough to help with identifying the letterers and he spotted that there was at least one other person lettering parts of the final episode. The unknown hand and that peculiar final panel suggested some kind of editorial fiddling, perhaps to soften it a little bit, as the natural "beat" to end on feels like it's in the penultimate panel. The last panel seems like it should just be a clear shot of the house and the footsteps leading away down the hill. David spoke to everyone involved with the story that he could reach before it went to print but no-one could confirm whether there had been any changes, so the little note was included just to point out the incongruity.

That opening DPS was a cracker, and interesting to work with. It was scanned in multiple sections, then reassembled and matched for line and greywash tone and given all the usual clean-up, then the whole thing needed chopped in two again for setting for print! There's a little fiddle to get it to run as smoothly as possible over the two pages (thanks to PYE-01 for advice there!) which was a first, as all of the previous Hibernia reprints have been single pages with no spreads. A real learning experience!

It says a lot that I consider most Rebellion GNs too pricey, or just too recent in my memory and give them a miss, whereas Hibernia releases are always must-buy products.

Now, please tell me that you are working on a complete Monster collection...  ;)

Glad they're must-buys :) David's picked some crackers for reprinting, and introduced me to some I'd never read - Baker's Half-Dozen was a lovely surprise and great fun.

Monster would be brilliant, but I think that one's a bit tied up so it might not be available - I think David might be able to give you more info. There are a few requested strips that are a bit difficult to secure for reprint, but I know David keeps on working on those so perhaps one day!

Glad you enjoyed reading it all over again, and I'm delighted you were happy with the quality of the repro. FWIW, the files that went to print had the slightly washed-out look too and it was a real heart-in-mouth few days waiting for word from David that the final print had come out the way it was intended to! He's picked a cracking printer though, and they've always been incredibly helpful when it comes to getting the best print quality possible.

Delighted everyone is enjoying it, its a cracking title. Richard had done a sterling job on the artwork, and the cover too. Glad  you finally got it Jim, and ta for the help too!
Monster is not on the cards, and Invasion 1984 might be one for the future, Its quiet long IIRC it runs to something like 120 pages, I have a few more to do before its considered.

Great review, Thanks! I didn't realise that you had bought a copy too.. your review pointed out another idea that W&G had recycled from HOD, the 'hands' trying to grab the characters, used again in Anderson.
The 'trapped in someone else's twisted vision' is something John Wagner had used a few times, The 13th Floor and Strontium Dog, Journey to Hell and Roadhouse. I'm sure someone will pop up to name more.

Don't remember that one and haven't heard of it (might have been after my Battle time?) but with Eric Bradbury on art sure to be a winner.

How's copyright on the Battle stuff, what did Titan grab? Did they only buy what they've reprinted? If other stuff is available surely The Sarge deserves a run out?

Thats the one! Thanks Amstor, I knew Bradbury was on art duties for it but couldn't remember the exact name.  :)

Colin, I think Battles library is owned by a different company to Titan who leased them the rights to a few titles for reprint (Charleys War and Johnny Red etc). Others are still withheld I believe.

^ Seconded.
Fighting Mann was my first introduction to Cam's work. Incredible stuff, and I loved it straight off the bat. Pocket money being what it was back then, certain comics had to be let go of, to make way for others, so I never did get to read this tale all the way to the end, so a reprint would be all kinds of lovely.

Heh, I suspect it might be :) That said, I have a big soft spot for Carmona's Manix (that Boys from Brazil-inspired one is great, silly fun too) so if David ever picked that for reprint I'd be in hog heaven!

Fighting Mann is another I've never read, but I've heard great things about it and Cam's art is lovely - the setting is unusual for British war comics too.

I don't think there's a lot of it, but I have this vague feeling that Cam did a couple of shorter and/or self-contained stories for Battle, so maybe there'd be enough material for a Cam-themed volume...?

Jealousy circuits overloading! Astounding work.

The House Of Daemon turned up last week, just got a chance to read it.
I'm sure I don't need to cover how lovely this collection looks, or just how incredible the reproduction is.
Top marks again for presentation.
The story is classic Wagner & Grant, and the art... Ortiz's work is at an all-time high on this. Just jaw-droppingly beautiful.

A truly essential purchase this one, here's a handy link - buy it!

Delighted you're happy with it :) Ortiz's work is just brilliant here, and while I enjoy Tower King and Thorn is a bit of a guilty pleasure, I think it's the best of the three greyscale strips he did for Eagle. Of course, his work on Thirteenth Floor and Survival (eat yer heart out, The Walking Dead!) is lovely, but those three greywash strips were something else.

I'm on my hols, but thought I'd stop by to add to the praise for this book. Read it last night and it turns out I had read it before. In the past it clearly didn't have an impact on the too level of my befuddled mind. Re-read all those years later so much of it was buried in my lower brain it was untrue. I think as a young lad reading Eagle I just didn't appreciate how much fun this was. I certainly didn't appreciate Jose Ortiz work the way I do now. Astonishing stuff really bringing to life a fine tail.

The product is what you've come to expect from Hibernia of late. Its a joy to own and the design and production is absolutely first rate.

My only criticism of this glorious company is that they've not produced more Doomlord and thats just me whining cos I can't accept not getting want I what in life! Thanks again fellas for all the work that goes into producing this quite superb collections.

Thanks Colin, delighted you like it. There are some real gems hidden away in these old comics. I'd love to do more Doomlord, we will see what the future brings.
Design and production is firmly at Richard's feet, the covers especially I think he has a real eye for.
I did get some copies into the Forbidden Planet International shops, hopefully that will go well.

Cheers!

I suspect we've filled our boots in these parts BUT if anyone hasn't yet there's a great sale on from Hibernia right now. If you buy Houise of Daemon (or Dracula Files for that matter) you can get Baker's Half Dozen half price. All three are superb so if you haven't dipped your toes into this particular comics oasis yet this is the perfect time to do so.

http://www.comicsy.co.uk/hibernia/ (http://www.comicsy.co.uk/hibernia/)

They still have their Doomlord books for the insanely reasonable 2.50 - its my favourite of the lot and its probably the fact that MaryandDavid can't even shift the back stock at this brilliant price that means I'm not get the next Doomlord volume I keep whining for! I blame anyone who doesn't own this quite brilliant book for this and this making my life a barren wasteland of misery.

Hope the sale is cos Baker's Half Dozen hasn't sold well and just to clear out space for more lovely new Hibernia products. Release for release their is a publisher with a hit rate as high as them, by some distance!

Ta Colin, and while Bakers didn't set the world on fire, it held its own.
Its more an exercise in making room! I recently bough a collection of 1000+ british comic, with loads of Ken Reid material, priceless stuff. I am looking out for the mythical Ken Reid strip that was proposed for 2000 AD.

According to Pat Mills

'A few weeks before 2000AD was due to go to press, I learnt that there was a brilliant Ken Reid cartoon strip he had produced for a dummy that had never been published!!! The same managing editor thought it was disgusting and condemned it to the vaults.  It concerned the hideous mutant survivor of a nuclear war who had a horrible "thing" on his back and every week he would try and kill himself.  But each week the thing on his back would prevent him.  So if he jumped off a cliff, the thing would turn into a propeller and fly him to safety etc.  You can just imagine how Ken would have drawn it!  How deliciously foul and what a wonderful antidote to all those saccharine strips in Whoopee! et al.  Just what I needed for the back cover of 2000AD.  I had 100 per cent power to do what I wanted with 2000AD, so I requisitioned the strip from the vaults. But the old regime told me that it had mysteriously "disappeared" and could not be found. Yeah, right.'

Most ideas were reused, so I am (foolishly) hopeful of someday finding it in a 'Creepy Creation' or some such in one of the humour comics.
I am hopeful of getting at least one more out before Christmas, two if the stars align.

The books will be on offer for the next few days, so now's the chance!

Yeah well said. Maryanddavid thanks so much for all the work and effort I assume you put into producing the books. I simply love them and I'm really grateful for what you have achieved. I do wonder how much you've inspired Rebellion's own foray into publishing other material.

Mind I'm gutted to see you still have some Doomlord's left, even after you had it on sale for a crazy cheap price a while ago. Probably puts pay to me ever getting more! If any of you folks haven't bought this yet you really, really REALLY should its bloody brilliant!

I'm pretty sure David will be along ASAP to announce it properly - the last email I had from him was late last night as he was getting everything organised for launch, so he may be a bit frazzled!

Until he starts a new thread for it, all I'll say is that he's picked a cracking set of complete short stories for reprint that show off why the '80s Eagle is still fondly remembered, and stand as good adventure tales in their own right - and it's a hell of a selection of comics talent too. Alan Moore scripting a photostory? Jim Baikie on Doomlord? Ian Kennedy on Dare? Carlos Ezquerra drawing KGB action? It's brilliant, bonkers fun :-)

If you missed out on this last time, buy it now. Seriously -- it's great. Fantastic job on the production side for a quality presentation, exactly the sort of fast-paced inventive stuff you'd expect from a Wagner/Grant script of this vintage, and phenomenal art from Ortiz... possibly my favourite of his work that I'm familiar with.

Are there any plans for a reprint of The Fifth Horseman? I have it in my head that it was also drawn by Ortiz but I could be wrong. I don't think I've seen it since it was first printed in Eagle.

I have two Comic Archive in the works at the moment and that is eating my time, plus some other hush work so no immediate plans for the Fifth Horseman, but it is on the wish list. There will be  a reissue of the Tower King in the same format as HOD in the next few weeks.

...making my occasional visit to the board to say: it does indeed :)

David wanted to take the opportunity to put out a second edition that matched the other recent Hibernia reprints, so I've taken the files for the original reprint and tweaked everything for a reprint in the same format/size as House of Daemon. The time wasn't there for a complete re-scan and fresh clean-up, but I think the original edition holds up in that regard and I hope it will sit comfortably alongside HoD.
