Well, as the title says, looking for some space opera/ space horror (Alien etc. etc.) style game recommends. Tried Dead Space but the controls on PC are all but impossible to navigate and the jerky graphics gave me vertigo. Totally open to a Final Fantasy style or, better still, old school survival horror such as Galerians or Resi 1 on the PlayStation. Only, on PC...

Any thoughts?

Books & Comics / Mother's Basement...
04 February, 2014, 10:46:19 PM
Don't know if any of you guys have done business with Mother's Basement (mail order high-end sci-fi collectibles), but it seems they've gone under:

http://mothersbasement.co.uk/

It also seems they owe a lot of money to a lot of unsatisfied customers:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/mothersbasementhasmymoney/

Only happened within the last couple of days, I think.

Just in case anyone here has been waiting on a delivery  :(

Looking for some recommendations for hard-boiled space opera novels. Weird request, I know, but something along the lines of the Alien franchise, only in novel form. Now, obviously, there's a load of tie-in novels, which I'm working through right now, but anything else folks here would recommend?

Hey guys, figured some of you might be interested in this: Salt Publishing (who publish my latest book - cyberpunk thriller, PLASTIC JESUS) have put out a submissions call for novella length submissions of fiction across all genres.

It's for a new digital wing they're launching.

More details:

http://blog.saltpublishing.com/2014/01/03/modern-dreams-calling-for-submissions/

I've found Salt to be great to work with, thus far, so definitely worth giving a swing!

Hey guys,

Replied to a few posts on here already but just to put a general call out...

I'm interested in pretty much any Judge Dredd, Judge Anderson, Durham Red or SD GNs you good folks are looking rid off. Relocating pretty much cleared me out of my stash (a lot of books, DVDs and CDs went too, alas) and I'm keen to rebuild my collection over the next while.

Cheers, all!

Books & Comics / Black Flame Books
11 December, 2013, 10:59:16 AM
Not sure if there's a thread on this already, mods? If so, feel free to delete/ merge.

Just working my way through some Black Flame titles at the moment and wondered if anyone else had read any, and what they thought of them.

I started with The Omega Solution by Peter J. Evans, an Abnett/ Harrison era Durham Red story that proved enjoyable. On one of the Anderson books now, The Sins of the Father, and enjoying it very much, too.

Of course, all of the BF 2000AD titles (to my knowledge) have been re-released on e-format by Rebellion so they're still available for current readers of the prog to revisit or discover: http://www.rebellionstore.com/

Any other titles folks would recommend?

Prog / Durham Red - continuity?
08 December, 2013, 09:24:42 AM
Hey guys, getting into the prog and meg again after being out of the loop for a while. Been reading the Peter J. Evans Black Library tie-in novels for Durham Red and enjoying them very much.

I noticed Durham Red made a return to the prog in 2012, after the SD revival. Does this now sort out the continuity issues from the retcon?

I'm sure this has been addressed, already, but can't seem to find the search facility on the forums (ironic, I know).

Thanks muchly.

Hey all, just popping by to let you know my new book, a sci-fi thriller, is available now at all good book stores and online.

(Can't seem to insert a pic link!)

Here's the blurb:

Code Guy Johnny Lyon writes a Jesus social networking AI, to rebrand religion following a devastating Holy War. But something goes wrong; virtual hell bursts onto the streets of Lark City, with Johnny the only person who can stop it.

PLASTIC JESUS is a sci-fi thriller echoing Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER and Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION.

'The moodiness of Blade Runner... and stylistic writing of Jeff Noon's Vurt, but with a unique quality all its own. Dangerous and atmospheric, Plastic Jesus is a futuristic thrill ride with unexpected heart.' Books, Bones & Buffy

'Modern, edgy and fascinating...' Skin Deep Tattoo Magazine

'Wayne Simmons steps out of his blood-splattered comfort zone and makes an indelible mark on the sci-fi genre.' Starburst Magazine

I'll be launching DOLL PARTS at Waterstone's Cardiff branch this Saturday (21st April 2012) from 12.30pm onwards. David Moody will be there too, signing copies of his AUTUMN and HATER books. It's a free event (well, you pay for the books but even those are reduced!) so pop along and say hey.

Good day, fellow boarders! Just to let y'all know that my 4th horror novel is now available.

DOLL PARTS is the sequel to cult apoc-horror DROP DEAD GORGEOUS.

*assume dulcet tones of voiceover dude*

Roughly 99% of Belfast's population suddenly dropped dead.

Some have risen again, and a horde of the beautiful undead is descending upon the city, wreaking bloody vengeance on the few left alive.

An unlikely group of survivors flee the carnage, heading for the city's main airport. But their refuge there may quickly come to an end as the living dead close in to besiege the living.

Doll Parts is the sequel to cult zombie-horror novel, Drop Dead Gorgeous.

'Doll Parts is a verbal gut-punch, viciously beautiful in its delivery. Simmons takes the femme fatale to a whole new level in this remorseless look at a world gone to hell.' --Sarah Elliot, Pop Culture Monster

'Brilliant, bloody and beautiful.' --Garry Charles, Shock Horror Magazine

'One of the best new horror writers of the decade. Wayne Simmons takes everything you fear and exploits it with no apologies.' --James Melzer, author of Escape.

Available from all good book stores, online and offline, including good ol' Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doll-Parts-Wayne-Simmons/dp/1907777539/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1332766697&sr=1-1

So, I was in my local Waterstone's last night, lurking around the genre section, up to no good. Got chatting to a friend who works there about 70s horror movies, and the like, when someone rudely interrupted us wanting to buy something.

Anyway, my pal rung her purchase through the till only for me to spot the 2000AD label on the side of one of her books. Crooked my neck trying to see which title, to no avail.

Thought nothing of it until she tried to leave the shop only for the alarm to go off.

She returned to the till, like a good bot only for my pal to say, 'No, nothing there could set the alarm off.'

But then it happened again.

Anyone else had similar problems when trying to buy 2000AD goodies?

Hey guys, just wanted to give you the heads-up on the latest tome of woe :)

A deadly strain of flu has mysteriously mutated, causing the deaths of millions throughout Ireland and beyond. But the infected don't stay dead for long, rising up to become flesh-eating monsters.
In a quarantined lab just outside Belfast, lab worker Ellis and security guard Abe fight their way through corridors of the living dead, determined to expose a gruesome truth.

Ageing conspiracy theorist Tom wracks his brain to figure out what went wrong.

Meanwhile, a young child and her two unlikely wards find themselves in the middle of a cat and mouse game involving the remains of the military, a covert government department and the ever increasing throng of dead.

The fate of humanity lies in their hands.

FEVER is the sequel to 2010's bestselling zombie horror book, FLU, and is now available from Waterstone's, Forbidden Planet, all good book stores and good ol' Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fever-Wayne-Simmons/dp/1907777520/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330951057&sr=1-1

An old school zombie novel with fresh pop culture references and a blood-stained nod towards Robert Kirkman's THE WALKING DEAD. --Michael Wilson (THIS IS HORROR)

Breathless and unrelenting, you cannot fail to turn the page and see what happens next. --JD Gillam (STARBURST MAGAZINE)

FEVER wears its reanimated heart proudly on its sleeve. Simmons builds on the nightmare world he created in FLU and manages to make it even more horrific and diseased. A sequel which surpasses the original.
--David Moody (Bestselling Author of the HATER and AUTUMN Series)

Hey all, just wanted to give you the heads-up on my latest horror novel, on release now from SNOWBOOKS. I know many of you were kind enough to take a chance on my previous release, FLU. Hopefully you'll enjoy this slightly different take on the zombie apocalypse...

THE BLURB:

As tattoo artist Star begins to ink her first client on a spring Sunday morning, something goes horribly wrong with the world...Belfast's hungover lapse into a deeper sleep than normal, their sudden deaths causing an unholy mess of crashing cars, smoldering televisions and falling aircraft.
In the chaotic aftermath a group of post-apocalyptic survivors search for purpose in a devastated city. Ageing DJ Sean Magee and shifty-eyed Barry Rogan find drunken solace in a hotel bar. Ex-IRA operative Mairead Burns and RIR soldier Roy Beggs form an uneasy alliance to rebuild community life. Elsewhere, a mysterious Preacher Man lures shivering survivors out of the shadows with a promise of redemption.

Choked by the smell of death, Ireland's remaining few begin the journey toward a new life, fear and desperation giving rise to new tensions and dark old habits.

But a new threat creeps slowly out of life's wreckage...
