I'm not too keen on model collections as I wouldn't have the room to display them so I tend to stick to book collections.  One series I'd love to see happening is a Gerry Anderson collection with all those Thunderbirds, Stingray et all stories, so why hasn't this happened yet?

Eaglemoss tested one in 2013. Presumably it didn't sell well enough as it never went to a national launch.

You know, they look nice and this is a series I'm not as familiar as I'd like to be with.

My reservation?  Comments on the tooth collection thread about how they seem to have gone seriously downhill since the Dredd Mega collection.

The books are fine. The service is borderline abysmal, although they do at least send replacements on request. (That said, about 90% of those I've asked for should not have been necessary – either loss or avoidable damage.)

That's what has me concerned.  IIRC most of the Aliens / Predator material is colour so repro shouldn't be so much of an issue but the number of complaints about dispatch, packaging, printing errors raises the question of whether it is worth trusting them any more.

The X-men one has been running for a while now.  Local Smiths have had most of the issues to date.  No sign of the A/P series.  Then again Dark Horse do seem to be upping their game so considering the dogs breakfast that Hachette seem to be making of the Tooth series ...

Fairly sure this is just a 4 issue test release at this stage. It'll probably go national around Christmas to tie in with Episode 9

Thanks indeed Neil.

Just got my email saying I should get the first 2 books in the next 2 weeks.

The X-Men one I ended up with nothing so I assume that was a bust.

The AvP one I got the first 4 books and then zilch so I also assume that one did not go ahead. Which is a shame. The books were lovely.

According to Jedi News, this test has been running for a month already, and I look to be just the 38th person to subscribe. That may not bode well for a full release.

Brexit Partwork. Every fortnight you get a new tory leader, and the another swivel eyed loon to add to your collection. At the end of the collection you can brexit, or leave it unopened in a box like everyone normally does.

Oh my god they have done it again. I honestly thought there was no other series I would buy but here it is. Think I'm gonna sign up to the trial and hope for some more free books.
Not entirely sure how many Asterix books there are. The size of the books might be a turnoff, if too small.
Could also do Tintin, again limited by no of books.
A really interesting one would be Humanoids.

Oh I don't do this type of thing but the Asterix books are tempting - just depends how big they are. It would be lovely to have a nice uniform collection but ... well size does matter. I have a copy of some collection or other that's been done in the past and its a little small. If these are the same size as the 2000ad ultimate collections will I be able to get over it???

As for the collection size it does depend a little on what they count. 35 with another in the way couple of compliation books and things like How Obelix feel into the cauldron and 12 Tasks - may keep some back for a possible extension?

What size are they damnit!

Wait so what does that mean? Are Hachette going through with them or did they decide to leave them at 4 Issues and not release the collection? I'm hoping this means we're getting somewhere with them since I was very much interested in the Aliens/Predator Partwork Collection. Looked amazing.

I'm also still in the party of wondering why in the hell Hachette haven't released their Star Wars series outside of France yet. It's exactly in the style of their ongoing Marvel one (which will never end at this stage, let's face it) so it should be an absolute no-brainer especially with all things Star Wars being released now, I'm surprised they're not capitalising on the property. The collection looks stunning and given all the issues released in France right now (100 and ongoing) it's had enough time to decide if it's worth their time or not. The spine-art is very nice and it's definitely going to be a popular release.

Hachette so far isn't providing much info on collections that will succeed their 2000AD and Transformers ones, they're both late into their runs, the Deadpool one is underperforming (I think trying to create a Partwork series solely on the back of just Deadpool was a misfire) so where are some fresh new partworks?

Title: Re: New and upcoming partworks

I definitely do not want De Agostini to handle the Star Wars collection, their version looks like a cheap, knock-off version in comparison to Hachette's. They've never handled a comic partworks before and the book artwork is not too great. Hachette's also is doing all of the non-canon Legends books which is the real draw of the collection, De Agostini, if that collection was to proceed, is only focusing on the Canon/Disney Star Wars comics. It's ultimately not worth it in the long-run.

I'd prefer a more comprehensive partwork like Hachette, given their quality and experience in handling comics related partworks.

I mean just look at the books: https://m.bedetheque.com/serie-49847-BD-Star-Wars-Legendes-La-Collection-Hachette.html

The spine art as well is pretty amazing, I'm hoping Hachette finally releases it.

Hi

Any update on the Asterix the ultimate collection?

Has anyone been able subscribe to it? I tried but seems the website is down.

The only reason the want to get it is hopefully Hachette see a good response to it and we get more Franco Belgium comic series in the ultimate collection format, like Blueberry, Thorgal, works by Peyo, etc...

I completed the sub process but have heard nothing more, sorry.

Erathix, I got my copy of AvP vol 1 from Hachette yesterday and it's a very nice looking book indeed - with £1.99 cover price (!) but no Dave Dorman covers, for some reason.

Great to have it in hardcover, finally.

Interestingly, it came bagged with the "subscribe now!" leaflet/poster thing.

You can get the first - and only - 4 volumes from Hachette's website.

I'm really holding out hope now that Hachette has gone through with the AvP series, it looks terrific and the Spine Art was exceptional. I've never owned any of the comics before so to collect them in this edition would be amazing. Fingers-crossed if they've sent the subscribe flyer with the issues that they're sending out. I was disheartened by the website being shut down and the link sending you to the store, I'm not sure what that means. Out of all the collections Hachette is testing (or has already out in other countries) Alien/Predator and Star Wars Legends Collections are the ones I want the most being released. There's been so many Marvel ones already, I missed out on Judge Dredd and 2000AD (way too late to start picking up now) and I enjoyed the Transformers one thus far (also collecting the Legends of Batman Eaglemoss partwork which has been really good as well.) So it would be nice to invest in some fresh new collections.

It's well worth hitting ebay for second hand copies of the Mega collection, I managed to grab a complete set that way. Not sure how available the Ultimate Collection is like though as I subscribe but it feels like that's being done in smaller runs so I'd anticipate it'll be harder to find.

emailed Hatchette about the Asterix collection and got this reply

QuoteThank you for your email.

The is not a definite date for releasing first issue yet unfortunately.

Please find link below with information about collection , i am afraid i would not be able to guess the accurate measurements of books. Hope this helps:

And a link to the webpage that answers neither question. Not much help alas but I do find it funny that they thought I was asking for a guess on the size as opposed to asking someone who'd know!

Papercutz will be retranslating Asterix and releasing them in omnibuses starting may 2020.

https://www.newsarama.com/47764-asterix-returning-to-north-america-with-reprints-of-classic-stories-this-year-s-new-volume.html

I kinda of worried that papercutz is in charge of if Asterix.

They seem to have stopped releasing the  Peyo works in the hardcover anthology series or they are just not telling us it got cancelled.

Thorgal gets a release over here from Cinebooks so not sure how the license for that sits.

As for the rest PLEASE GOD will someone release Blueberry.... yes yes I could get off my arse and learn French but it escapes why - with so much stuff being released these days - Blueberry is such a glearing omission.

I'm guessing the original translations are copyright of the original UK publisher. Anthea Bell (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/oct/18/anthea-bell-magnificent-translator-of-asterix-and-kafka-dies-aged-82) and Derek Hockridge created whole new jokes and most of the character names*

* That one's a clincher - does anyone want to read a version of Asterix where Dogmatix isn't Dogmatix, Vitalstatistix isn't Vitalstaistix, and Getafix isn't Getafix? Maybe the translations could be licenced too, but that would cost more money. UK readers love those translations as much as they love the art and stories, so if this decision is about saving money, it's a false economy.

Depends on where and how it's done, I suppose. Compare, say, Rebellion's work on Halo Jones and/or the relettering Jim's done with IDW's disasterous 'remastering' the entire Marvel US Transformers run using what looked like an automated process that obliterated line work and introduced a shit-ton of typos and mashed letterforms.
Title: Re: New and upcoming partworks

Papercutz will use the original names and it is suppose to be targeted at the us market.

there is less paper count in the asterix ultimate collection per volume compared to the dredd and the 2000 ad ultimate collection, so aim hoping they can make the books larger format like the french editions

I would imagine a Hachette collection will use the existing translations. The Papercutz books are for the American Market after all. The Pipeline Comicbook Podcast covered the new US editions in detail last week.

I picked up the first issue because the ghosties seemed good value and a good fit for my Dragon Warriors game. Beyond some of the undead, I've no interest in the Sigmar aesthetic, and the paint haul isn't as good as it has been in the WH40K equivalent. Goodies seem heavily skewed towards the 'premium sub' level.

The first issue does contain some nice mini's but like yourself I'll be using them for something else; namely, Heroquest. I may even entertain painting the 3 human mini's as Stone or bronze Golums as the designs look like a good fit.

I went all-in with the 40k version which is pretty good value on the whole, although I would suggest that there are too many issues containing scenery. This new collection will be cherry picking only!

Cheers

Golems is a good idea! And I've just remembered that I need some heroic-age statues for a future puzzle room.

I basic-subbed for the 40K one, and aside from a ridiculous quantity of that basing paste which I don't use, I've been really happy with it - pressure of work and family (and a cold dark workspace) has me very behind in painting since the autumn, but I'll get back to it. I've done a surprising amount of the modelling (for me) and it's really helped my so-called skills.

Oddly the scenery has been my favourite part - I try to paint it as setting-agnostic as possible for use in SW, SD and Dredd. Although two of those big skull-faced reactors think may have been too much, I'm looking forward to the gantries. Other than a few shipping delays, I've really no complaints.

I'm now studiously ignoring Mortal Realms, but the first was absolutely stuffed with things, and as I'm short on Corax White the second issue is tempting...

Just in case anyone is interested in DC Superheroes, Hachette are now launching their own partwork of DC graphic novels (the Eaglemoss one is now up to #144)

https://dccollection.hachettepartworks.com

The first four books are Batman, Harley, Superman & Wonderwoman (specifics can be found through the link)

Hachette persisting in making it a nightmare to find any one volume, then. Odd decision, too, given that Eaglemoss has done DC and a separate Batman run. Mind you, hard to think of anything else that might have the same level of clout.

Title: Re: New and upcoming partworks

My initial reaction to the idea of a 2000AD figurine collection was "that'll be the day..." and a withering sigh. But hold! I have just found out that Europe has had a MILO MANARA FIGURINE COLLECTION- basically little models of his sexy girls, with a magazine.

Now, I love Milo Manara, and if I lived on my own and didny have access to real human women, and if I spoke Italian so could read the mags, I might be very interested in a shelf full of little resin nudes and scantily clad beauties. But I don't, I do, and I don't.

But if Manara can get such a collection, maybe there is hope for a prog-based one after all. Isnt Tharg's Mighty Organ well known across the channel? Or has Brexit done its wonderful job on that as well?

Could we feasibly look forward to the Carlos Ezquerra Figurine Collection?

Probably not. But it would be lovely.

Superman; For the man who has everything (Superman annual #11& other stories, includes Whatever happened to the man of Steel?. Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons & Rick Veith stories included)

Aquaman: The Drowning
Aquaman: The Trench
Last Laugh
Infinite Crisis
The Lightning Saga
Flash: Rebirth
Flash: Terminal Velocity
Deathstroke: City of Assassins
Deathstroke: The Professional
Suicide Squad: Kicked in the Teeth
Suicide Squad: The Black Vault

A reply to a post on their FB page also suggested a Crisis on Infinite Earths collection will be coming soon so (assuming COIE is a 2 parter) we know what at least 18 of the 100 books will be

In regards to the books themselves, Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader is a souped-up version of the paperback, with the full Secret Origins Special with all the non-Gaiman bits plus an Alan Moore Clayface story.

The Harley volume is an absolute beast with about 10 issues worth of pages.

Bonus features and build quality are leagues beyond the Eaglemoss books which feel a bit flimsy to me. While the origin strips in the Eaglemoss books are nice I find the essays to be a lot more interesting than the, tbh, very dated 40s-50s comics

Craziest one I've seen yet, a 1:2 scale Xenomorph model at £99.99 a month.

https://alien.hachettepartworks.com

No magazine, all the instructions are downloadable PDFs and the free gifts are a generic green cutting mat, a kinda mid-looking tin poster with recycled artwork from Alien Covenant of all places and what looks like a repackaged Eaglemoss figure

I know - for a measly $34.51 you can get this much better version (https://www.amazon.com/NECA-Alf-Ultimate-Action-Figure/dp/B09W19D6D1/ref=pd_day0fbt_sccl_1/135-4542506-7969821?pd_rd_w=SmbTk&content-id=amzn1.sym.5054166f-09f2-4024-a83e-40183011592b&pf_rd_p=5054166f-09f2-4024-a83e-40183011592b&pf_rd_r=0C7EC56NJKH4D1QDDE38&pd_rd_wg=93w60&pd_rd_r=89ec2736-8efc-4304-bd4b-fb345536813b&pd_rd_i=B09W19D6D1&psc=1).

Given the way the world is right now and especially after what happened to Eaglemoss, I'd be very reluctant to invest in any partwork today. I might make an exception for books but even then there's the risk of strips not being completed. (Also, I can't think of a publisher where I'd want a lot of volumes anyway. I own almost all the Vertigo I care about. Image releases most of its output in HC anyway. Dredd and 2000 AD are done. Classic Transformers was done, albeit in somewhat maddening fashion.)
