Books & Comics / Help Me Hive Mind (X-mas Marvel gifts)
18 December, 2011, 05:55:19 PM
I've got a brother-in-law for whom I usually buy trades for X-mas, but my tastes and his aren't quite flush. He is a massive Hulk fan, but I have a difficult time getting him something he hasn't already read in that quarter. He has read New Avengers and liked that, also Aaron's Wolverine run and the Brubaker/Fraction Iron Fist (which is fucking awesome). That said, my last two gifts, Brubaker's Captain America and Hickman's Secret Warriors got pretty decisive mehs. DC, independents, European stuff, and of course my beloved Tooth just baffle him. He's a pretty stereotypic US reader if I'm honest. I gave him Nemesis because he tends to like ultra-violent movies, and he said, "It was interesting but I think I like my comics to have heros that are, um, not assholes." So are there any Marvel readers among you squaxx?? Help me out here.

The Register is going to list the top fifty science fiction books Hollywood has yet to sully. Happily before it does it made a list of those books that didn't make the cut from lack of votes. There are some good books in that list. You may recognize a couple.  :D

Books & Comics / Aren't Comics Just Great??
19 September, 2010, 05:20:09 AM
Have to say I love this crazy little art form. There are certain things about it which are unique to it and better than the rest.

For example I read regular fiction and even poetry quite a bit and often go to readings. That said, comics signings are infinitely superior to regular book signings. The artists frequently make little sketches in the books you purchase and you get to chat with them in the mean time. They often leave out original art work so you have a chance to really look at their stuff in detail and ask them questions about it. It's just BETTER.

Went to William Gibson's reading and Stan Sakai's (Usagi Yojimbo) signing and I enjoyed the latter more. Sakai was a mensch and gave me three different quick sketches for the three collections I bought, and told me some fun gossip while he sketched. And I don't know why but comics fans are friendlier or at least more sociable waiting in line.

Was having a debate with my Bro the other day and I thought I'd open it to the public. The prefectionism that makes good comic book artists now and then destroys that artist's ability to draw regular comics. Mike Mignola, Tim Truman, Mike Schultz, come to mind, but for me Brian Bolland is the worst case scenario. An amazing artist of movement, blocking, and page layout, which are so important in comics, but he is now strictly a cover artist. I've seen his rough work that he's knocked out and it's fantastic, better than most of the Big Two's stables. But it's not good enough to meet his standards.

So here are the questions Jess and I debated. Is Brian Bolland Syndome preventable and how? Once Brian Bolland Syndrome has struck has anyone ever returned to being a comic book artist(I've never heard of one)? What is minimum number of pages a comics artist should be able to put out per year?

General / Fregredo shout out to Tharg
27 May, 2010, 05:06:10 AM
Don't think anyone's mentioned this. I bought a copy of Hellboy: The Wild Hunt today and was very pleased to read the dedicationby Duncan Fregredo:

"For my Dad, with whom I enjoyed the comic thrills of musical, killer robots and a cute grocery-shopping/spacefaring chick with a psychotic robo-dog."

Obviously, Good Fathers + Tooth = damn good artists.

PS If you haven't read Fregredo's work on Hellboy you are missing out.

Books & Comics / The Decades Through Comics
15 February, 2010, 05:27:53 AM
Maybe it's because I've been reading comics even before I could read(God bless those little pictures!)but when I think of Decades past I often think some were best represented by the comics produced at the time. For instance I don't think anyone did a better job on the early 90's in Seattle than Peter Bagge's Hate. Or America in the late Eighties seems to me pretty well summed up by comics like Eddie Current and Electra Assassin. Textbooks will tell you what happened, but comics are great at reminding you how it FELT. Sometimes even better than the TV, movies, or books.

I bring this up here because I think Tooth has always done a good job using the paranoias of the day as raw material. I love how The Apocalypse War takes the piss with the nuclear threat fears of the early Eighties. And Cradlegrave continued that tradition with the threat of hoodies and drugs taking over neighborhoods.

So does anyone else feel like this, that with some eras comics have the upper hand?

General / Judge Dredd Case Files: When To Stop
14 November, 2009, 06:38:44 AM
Just got through reading JDCF 14 and loved it. Couldn't have loved it more. The great thing about Dredd stories is they always live up to the hype and Necropolis was no exception. Amazing colour work by Ezquerra and considering I'd never heard of him that Jeff Anderson is a hell of a find. No other comic collections have given me the sense of joy as these have for the last four years.

That said I know the unadulterated Wagner stretch is about to fizzle out and I'm getting worried. I'm not one of those people who hates other writer's Dredds but I have heard on this forum, for instance, that no Dredd is better than Millar's Dredd. At what point should I begin being more cautious about ordering the case files?

Film & TV / The Hurt Locker
29 July, 2009, 04:32:09 AM
Just went to go see this and I wanted to recommend it to my fellow boarders. I don't know if it's been released in the UK, but keep an eye out for it till then. Readers of Ennis' war stories and Charlies War I think will appreciate the most. It focuses on a bomb squad in Iraq who spend their days disarming the homemade mines left about by insurgents. It is thankfully NOT a jingoistic killfest but simpley tries to put across the anxiety of the soldiers when they have no idea who in the crowd is going to trigger the explosion.

General / Show your support for tooth!
28 April, 2009, 04:42:23 AM
Was reading the Onion AV Club and came across this:

//http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-comics-reporter-makes-a-good-list,27211/

A list of "The Ten All-Time Best Long-Running Comics Series" and no one mentions 2000ad?! So I left a post under Judge Minty (no idea why) but I'm tired after eight hours studying Patho and hungry so I doubt I left much of an impression and probably mispelled everything. So for Tharg's sake ask WTF and maybe they will start reviewing Rebellion books ever.

More evidence that D'Israeli is truly the artist to watch above all others. My guess is this will be considered the best cover of 2009.

Help! / Tooth T-shirts in the USA
03 April, 2009, 02:05:47 AM
Have been going to a pub quiz called Geeks Who Drink (overqualified really) and have been getting in the top three slot pretty consistently. Since they put pictures of the winners on their website I thought it would be fun to wear a 2000ad themed t-shirt. I have, however, yet to find a distributer of Rebellions great t-shirts in the states. Do any of the stateside readers know of any?

Off Topic / Time of Joining: The Wee Hours Club
26 January, 2009, 03:13:56 AM
I just noticed while I was reading the "really REALLY rubbish" thread that under each person's name is a superfluous but fascinating note on the date and the time that the member joined. Buttonman joined at 5:59am and dog deever at 5:30am.
Looking about and it seems a quarter of the members of this forum joined after 2am. So was it insomnia or had you thrown a drunk and couldn't get get to sleep for the spins that made you sign up?

Books & Comics / Jack Chick Meets Lovecraft
25 January, 2009, 03:45:59 AM
Just what the title says. For those who don't know, Jack Chick puts out revolting little ultra right-wing evangelical pamphlet/comics that you find on the floors of seedy bus stations.

Evidently the original artist was threatened by Chick's lawyers and took the comic down from his site.

Books & Comics / Superhero Debate! Who gives a F*#*!?
13 January, 2009, 04:07:43 PM
Everybody in US fandom apparently. Bill Willingham(Fables creator) evidently posted a column on a conservative website and said Superheroes needed to get back to Good V. Evil battles and "American Values" (Intervening in shit they don't know shit about?). THis has caused a HUGE uproar for some reason. I'm linking to an Onion AV Club artocle that links to the appropriate places.

//http://www.avclub.com/articles/willingham-calls-for-end-to-superhero-decadence-co,22227/

My own take on this is this is just yet another middle-aged guy whining that superheroes aren't what they were when he was a kid. This may be a just normal sign of a midlife crisis in comic creators, I've had to listen to the same from Art Speigleman to John Byrne.

Film & TV / Let The Right One In
31 December, 2008, 05:45:55 AM
I do hate those years where Johnny Foreigner makes the best monster movie of the year but 2008 is one of them. Traditional vampires and still damn creepy. Hell, I hate vampires and can count my favorite vampire movies on one hand and still have three fingers (well two now) in reserve. Go see it. Perfect for tooth readers.

Help! / Ordered Trades Anxiety.
24 November, 2008, 02:09:19 AM
I was wondering if someone could help me. I have ordered The Pit, but it has been postponed with Kingdom in its place. In this months previews Kingdom is listed and I didn't order it (nothing against the series). I've just seen the 2000ad Books site and the Pit is where Kindom used to be listed. I'm a little worried that I will not get the trade of The Pit which I must admit I'm REALLY looking forward too. Does anyone know if this has been sorted out? More to the point, did anything I wrote above make any sense at all? Help me, Jon Oliver, you're my only hope.

Second question. My comic store owner made a mistake and got me Button Man instead of Dante: Sword of the Tsar. Too expensive, but a great read, so not a tragedy. However, I want that Dante, so can anyone tell me in which month's Previews it was listed? That's always the first thing they ask whenever I try to fix an old order.

Much obliged for any help.

Links / Time Killer!!
08 November, 2008, 03:25:11 PM
Die Time Die!! Recently found the "Hey Oscar Wilde, It's Clobbering Time!!" site. The owner of the site asks comic artists to draw pictures of their favorite writers or favorite characters. There's a few familiar droids who've made submissions.
Not suprised that D'Israeli likes Vonnegut, but am damned suprised that the artist of Greysuit is a Walt Kelly fan. Who knew? Fun to know Jock and my Dad have similar reading tastes.

Books & Comics / Sublty Free Summer Reading List
03 June, 2008, 04:22:05 PM
Due to my taking only one class this summer (As opposed to five this last spring) I have some extra time on my hands. And rather than use that time to read edifying literature I thought instead I would check out novelists from the fourties, fifties, and sixties who specialize in tales of crime, corruption, and betrayal. I am also throwing in some playwrights from different periods who meet those specifications. More than a few of my discoveries I thought would be pleasing to tooth readers (I'll post about those later.)

I thought I would post my read list and to-be-read list and see if anyone had any recommendations.

Read:

-Jim Thompson: The Killer Inside Me and After Dark My Sweet

-Thomas Middleton: The Changeling

-Chester Himes: Real Cool Killers

-Eugene O'Neil:The Ice Man Cometh and The Emperor Jones

-Richard Condon: The Manchurian Candidate

To-Be-Read:

Budd Schulberg:The Harder They Fall or What makes Sammy Run

David Goodis:Shoot The Piano Player

Cornell Woolrich:Not Sure Yet

Ben Jonson: Volpone

Charles Willeford:Not Sure Yet

Malcom Lowry:Under The Volcano

Alan Sillitoe:Saturday Night and Sunday Morning

Phillip Massinger:Not Sure Yet
