Basically: Bad Company.

Back to those marvellous Milligany days - for Ewins, for McCarthy ! What KROOL kreations will April bring forth -? Let's see your Araart... etc etc

Never read Bad Company? I urge you to start here: http://shop.2000adonline.com/products/the_complete_bad_company

Rules be thus:

- You can have as many entries as you want but bear in mind more than one will split your vote so IT MAY NOT BE WORTH IT.
- No entries from anything you've done previously - they have to been drawn SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS
- There WILL BE PRIZES. ACTUAL PRIZES. For the first prize winner and for "Tharg's choice" so there's all to play for - !

A great Idea. I have not drawn Bad Company since I was 9!

Note: this is not my entry! :P This is my 9 year old self's art.

The idea of a nine-year-old drawing Bad Company fan art is just... oh it's just wonderful. That's a beautiful image!

*MINIBUMP*

We've heard back from Bob, and his chosen theme is a cracker but I'll keep that in reserve for a future comp ;) Additionally - if anyone has any comp ideas for the ever-useful reserve list drop 'em to me in a PM!

I'm the same as Hawkmonger and Mr Macheath.......I've never read any Bad Company ( Listened to the music in the 80's, Paul Rodgers and Co )......but, if Mr Dilworths' artwork is typical of the kind of stuff that I'm likely to find when reading it.......WOW !!
What an incredible piece of artwork.......Well done and thanks.
Thats' my next lot of reading material sorted out then.

McHeath, Hawk, Bob: Bad Company (and sequel Bad Company II: The Krool Heart) would be on most 2000AD readers all time top 5 favourite strips list. You've no idea what's ahead of you...no idea. Lucky buggers!!

PS- very nice painted piece above, looking forward to seeing how this thread develops.

For those thinking about picking up Bad Company, do yourselves a favour and pick up THIS version:

and NOT this one:

It seems strange to castigate a graphic novel for being too complete, but the later Bad Company material (included in the thicker phonebook book) is so inferior to the superb original works that it actually drags the whole lot down in terms of quality. The earlier graphic novel contains all the essential stuff, the only bits you need to read. You really aren't missing anything with the rest.

Thanks for the heads up lads, but being the narrow minded twirp I am I can't stand having an edition that is less complete than another edition of equel value. I'll just keep in mind the drop in quality when reading it and won't expect anything to the contrary.

Have gone with your advice,  and ordered Bad Company..Goodbye Krool World for the princely sum of £9.74 (including delivery ).   Delivery next week !!
That will give me time to read ' Y-The Last Man ' which is due to arrive on Thursday 11th....Excellent stuff and Cheers for the help. :D

If I'd been aware of the devastating events in Brett Ewins's personal life at that time, I would have been a little more forgiving of the results of what was basically an art therapy program. I could never understand why Milligan had decided to return to that strip - or 2000ad in general - but it makes a lot of sense that he would help out a good friend and mentor. Alan MacKenzie's gone up in my estimation for continuing to supply Ewins with paying gigs and for publishing Brett's art book/biography, all proceeds of which go directly to Brett:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Art-Brett-Ewins/dp/095691490X/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1365540945&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=brett+ewins (http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Art-Brett-Ewins/dp/095691490X/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1365540945&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=brett+ewins)

Milligan being ever the metafictionalist, there is a very telling set of lines early on in 'Bad Company 2002' where he does rather seem to be questioning the whole endeavour.

"Why go back? Didn't we do everything that needed to be done? Said all that needed to be said? What else is there to do?"

Nothing, Pete. Nothing to do and 6 whole episodes to not do it in.

The 'Kano' story is great though (much better read years later in one sitting), and well worth getting 'The Complete Bad Company' for.

Yeah have to echo what a couple of others have said that 'Kano' is a fantastic story and really shouldn't be neglected. Its a fantastic take on the whole soldier not being able to adjust to normal life trope. Of course this being Bad Company 'normal life' is anything but.

Oh and art is good (to keep things on topic!)

So what did I miss?

I keep promising myself I won't do any more of these, but Bad Company was a low-blow, and I couldn't resist. Like a first-love. Or something.

So here's an offering I put together which is titled, at least in my mind, "Kano Really Hates them Tomatoes".

I however am giving this month a miss as I have my wifes child book to illustrate and not enough hours in the day. Would love to be tech savy too when it comes to art programs... ahh too old I fear (or too stupid :))

What app(s) did you use on the iPad if you don't mind me asking Time Waster? Also, I don't suppose you'd have any stylus recommendations for the iPad? Or maybe you just finger-painted it, which would be superb.

I seem to recall either Milligan or Ewins described him as, visually, "a cross between Hitler, Nosferatu and Norman Tebbit" - so I'd say Albion's done him justice.

Wow! That's fantastic, Jimbo. All the action seems to be centering around Kano and Thrax - and I suppose they're the most visually arresting characters - but is there really no love for Wallbanger, zombie Malcolm, or Sheeva (http://www.2000ad.org/covers/scans/hires/578.jpg), with her tits-like-nuclear-warheads?

Well done to anyone who depicted the Krool, one of the best character designs in the comic's history, and more than enough to pin a story which didn't use any of the original human cast upon.

Phenomenally high standard of entries. Well done all.

(If I can digress, I never thought that blue suited Kano but I guess that was Brett Ewins' choice. I also thought that one blue skinned lead character in a 2000AD future war strip was enough.)

Following on from the last batch of amazing entries (seriously, some gobsmacking stuff, lads!), here's my humble tribute – I don't enter the art competition much (for lack-of-talent-related-reasons which should be patently obvious), but I couldn't pass up on the chance to salute Bad Company – my favourite comic series of all time. Here's De Racine with a toast:

An awesome amount of entries this month, really wish I didn't have to follow Neil but here we go.

Gave myself another time trail over my lunch break again, my Kano piece.

Didn't participate this month as I've not read Bad Company but I really wanted to contribute in some way...

So, I've made a chart to show just how unbelievably amazing this month's competition has been so far. I've marked a big red cross at the point where the axes meet.

Can't see the red cross? That because it's off the fucking chart!

I just want to echo everyone else's sentiments that the level of talent on display here so far is just astounding! Aside from the ludicrous amount of sheer talent, every piece just oozes personality as well.

I'm a bit embarrassed to submit my entry as it can't possibly come close to the others so far, but I've had a great time looking at this thread and also a great time reading Bad Company off the back of it.

So here's my submission, knocked up using pencils and iPad (it took me a pretty long time, I'm verrrry inexperienced with this sorta thing). As he hasnt been done yet I thought I'd celebrate Mad Tommy with a faux WWII propaganda poster:

Cheers folks, wonderful work everyone. I decided to give old Kano a spot of war paint. [Dunno the form, can I replace/delete the B&W version Mr.Admin?]

Stunning work all. Cool seeing it all on the FB page.

I've changed what I'm doing a few times now but I'll also end up with a Kano. Just finished the book this evening so I'm going with a moment from near the end of Goodbye, Krool world.

Cheers mate  :)

Managed to lay my hands on an old Motion Computing LE1600 for 50 quid- think of it as a budget wacom cintiq crossed with a tablet computer - and its made a massive difference to how long i can work on something.
Still need to find the perfect sitting position, but i'm getting there

Being able to draw directly onto the screen is also a godsend!

DOH, I have run out of time on this one I only managed a sketch on the Ipad last night. Real life deadlines will usurp the next month of time so I'll need to finish it off much later.

I was going for Kano struggling for control with his "other" half.

PS this is not an entry as it's not complete but I thought I would show where I was heading. I wanted to work up the mechanical elements at the back of his head and tighten up the drawing. The final piece was going for black and white inked in Manga Studio.

You noticed the mistakes then :P I like the idea but it needs the mouth redrawing. Another attempt at it would help. Hopefully I'll have time to actually spend more than a couple of hours on a sketch for a future comp.

The weird and wonderful Bad Company, one of my favourites growing up. Not quite finished, I was going to add the rest of the team with Kano in the center but time is short this month.

Sorry, just got to see it on my vastly superior screen at work and which also has photoshop levels on it's motherboard too. So I leveled up a little bit to how I thought it looked on the glass screen.

Thanks for you patience.

Very nice Archie...
I like this a lot....It has a 'sense' of desolation about it..

Hooo Boy !! ..This is gonna be a very hard month for voters !!....I reckon CFM will have to 'tread' on the voting ferret quite a few times to find a winner here... There's at least 6 so far that could easily win it...

Brilliant stuff !!

Thanks all, I do appreciate your comments. You're not wrong there Bob there are a whole load of fantastic entries so much so that after having a look through it today I felt the desire to contribute an entry. It'll be a hard vote.

When the competition is over (this evening?) CrazyFoxMachine will stick up a voting thread and then we shall all dance the voting mambo (i.e, you'll list your top three favourites and honourable mention in that thread.)
