Title: Favorite Cover Lines
Post by: Funt Solo on 19 January, 2021, 03:25:36 PM
Cover punnage is an art form, and "Hack to the Future" (from prog 1091) caught my eye yesterday as I was doing a bit of letterer indexing:

If you want to post up a favorite all you need to do is paste the following URL into img tags and swap out the "???" with the prog number: http://www.2000ad.org/covers/2000ad/mediumres/???.jpg

Not a tagline as such, but "um ... synthi sausage" sticks in the mind. (Pete Wells has a beautiful commission from Carlos of that cover with the sausage replaced by a Gregg's pasty - once he'd explained to him what a pasty was!)

Ironically, attached to the least sexy image of Anderson (and, arguably, the image that looks least like the character) ever committed to paper.

Quick browse of Barney to get some wording straight suggests these things go in definite waves:

Rogue Playing Games? Dragons in Dungeons!
Mega City Mobsters: The Big Fish "You wanna end up inna tin, Sardini?"
Big Mammy Bops Chops,  Drops Cop!
Join us on Mutant Hospital,  when Strontium Doc says: "It's time for your shots,  Mr.  Scully! ".

ASIDE: I'm sure I've seen it mentioned before, but Robo-Hunter getting 6 out of 10 covers from 259-268 really stands out, not least because it's during The Apocalypse War!

Ah here, Carlos was already lashing out episode after episode of the actual story. You couldn't ask for a load of covers too!

Sardini line is brilliant, by the way. One of the first that came to my mind.

Not a bad line-up inside: Wagner & Gibson on Dredd; Rennie & Quitely on Missionary Man; R Morrison & MacNeil on Shimura; the marmite delights of Creep by Spencer & Cullen; plus the revolving door of artists on Anderson: Postcards From the Edge, written by Alan Grant.

I would've picked all these myself!
Have been scrmabling to find more recent classics but it's clearly a tricky thing to get right.
I'm fond of Prog 2037's 'Unexpected item in the fragging area', although it would've been even funnier if it was attached to a Future Shock about a hapless loser getting cross in an AI supermarket.

I do enjoy when the cover line is just a song or film title; Skip Tracer on 2171 takes the prize by referencing Police Academy 6, of all films.

My favourite in a lot of years is this one...

It's a great play on words, made doubly clever by how appropriate the passage from which it's taken is...

Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills...

I suspect that's not the one he had in mind. The line was also used on a Ewins star scan which may be being confused with the cover.

Very much like Frances Bean Cobain, but, well, obviously that wasn't the reference.  It must have been somebody famous though - during that Sampson run on Anderson she was always a celebrity photograph with blobs of yellow hair on top.

'Reagan and the Red Menace' was a good one; though I was a bit too young to get it at the time.

Okay, without looking...

Frost / Nixon - Low Life
Unexpected Item in Fragging Area - Grey Area
Faceboot - ??? - oh, wait - Judge Dredd
Homies under der Hammer - Strontium Dog
Trojan Hearse - Aquila or, more likely, Sinister Dexter
From Here to Paternity - ??? - should be Al's Baby, but you said recent, so...
Abra Cadaver - Aquila or Absalom

Ones I know are correct:

Unexpected Item in Fragging Area - Grey Area
Homies under der Hammer - Strontium Dog

Frost / Nixon could actually be Judge Dredd - the whole Titan/Enceladus thing.

Hrmn...

Obviously I'm too engaged with this, but I'll have another go...

Frost / Nixon - Judge Dredd
Unexpected Item in Fragging Area - Grey Area
Faceboot - Judge Dredd
Homies under der Hammer - Strontium Dog
Trojan Hearse - Slaine
From Here to Paternity - ???
Abra Cadaver - Ampney Crucis Investigates...

I'm assuming it's Abra Cadaver that I'm wrong on (although my Faceboot is also a guess). The Paternity one has me stumped - I'm trying to think of parentage storylines and not getting far.

Still, I'll take 5 out of 7 as nae bad on a second try.

The ones I'm sure on, I'll be able to find pretty quickly...
