Proper monkeys would wear a fez.

A fez is, by definition, a fez. Therefore a monkey in a fez would be just that - a monkey in a fez.

This is a monkey in a hat.

WHat is he doing to that poor beast!?

fez
[fez]
–noun, plural fez·zes.
a felt cap, usually of a red color, having the shape of a truncated cone, and ornamented with a long black tassel, worn by men in Egypt and North Africa: formerly the national headdress of the Turks.

Origin:
1795–1805;  < Turk fes,  after Fes Fez

—Related forms
fezzy, adjective

Aha, so a fez is a cap? Does cap = hat, though?

cap
[kap]
noun, verb, capped, cap·ping.
–noun
1. a close-fitting covering for the head, usually of soft supple material and having no visor or brim.

and...

hat
[hat]
noun, verb, hat·ted, hat·ting.
–noun
1. a shaped covering for the head, usually with a crown and brim, esp. for wear outdoors.

So, a hat has a brim and a cap doesn't. Looks like a fez isn't a cap in the strictest sense of the word.

Discuss.
