General / Judgement Day follow-up
13 January, 2008, 07:44:54 PM
I vaguely remember reading a sort of follow-up one-off to Judgement Day. A woman whose husband was a reanimated zombie, "living" in their apartment. I think it was in the Megazine sometime fairly recently (last five years?)

Anybody recognise it and know the title/issue number?

The Chinese appear to have invented a primitive Aggrodome.

Tharg is prescient indeed.

General / Dredd Silk flag poster thingy
05 April, 2005, 09:16:17 AM
I just bought this on impulse on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6523061637

I have no idea why I bought it - it just cried out to me. But anyways, anyone have any idea where these things came from? Was it publicity around the movie or what?

Suggestions / Megazine Playing Cards gift

Lovely cards, nice enough box with this month's issue.

But why no jokers? Will there be two or three "Joker" cards with a subsequent issue?

Website and Forum / Search by Title
02 April, 2005, 07:44:38 AM
Is there any way to search for a story by title?

If not, can anyone recall which issues the Dredd stories "Wilderlands" and the various "Democracy" strand stories appeared in, pls?

Prog / Judgement Day
02 April, 2005, 07:42:29 AM
I just re-read this recently, and I was shocked at how, frankly, poorly written it was.

Aside from the obviously unDredd-ness of Dredd, there was a glaring internal continuity error which I remember balking at the first time I read it.

Specifically: Since Sabbat is from the far(ish) furture, how could he (as claimed) have been trained by Murd *before* Murd was killed by Dredd? I mean, Murd was killed over a decade before the "present day" of the story, long before Sabbat was born.

Even if you assume Sabbat was trained over a decade earlier, that still leaves the problem of where he's been for going on for a century.

General / British Library Missing progs 695-1066
31 August, 2003, 08:56:45 AM
I was at the British Library's comics collection site (don't ask - link below) and noticed that their inventory is missing 2000AD progs 695 to 1066 (inclusive):

2000 AD : 26 Feb. 1977 - 1 Sept. 1990; 11 Feb. 1997 -

As far as I can see, no other comics had gaps like that. Maybe they felt they werent worth keeping - or perhaps they were stolen by somebody who really wanted to read the end of Horned God book 3 or Necropolis.

Anyone any idea why there's a gap?

Just read it. Astounding. Not a foot put wrong, cover to cover. Art, writing (dialog and scripting) all superb. Astonished. Can't talk more - must lie down...

General / Toxic! / Bogie Man / Pat Mills
21 September, 2002, 03:01:08 PM
I'm about a third of the way through issues of "Toxic!" at the moment, and loving every minute of them.

John Wagner's "Bogie Man" is one of the tales being told in those pages and, although these stories aren't reprints, I so get the definite feeling that the character had appeared elsewhere before.

Other highlights include "The Accident Man" (an everyday tale of a hitman - what Sin & Dex might've been, if not done entirely for laughs, perhaps?) and "Muto Maniac" (though mainly for the Mike McMahon artwork). I'm not sure about "Marshall Law" as yet, but it seems a decent enough read so far.

In all, Toxic! and Revolver are the only non-2000AD comics I've been enjoying as much as 2000AD - Toxic! even contains some decent writing from Pat Mills (it seems he was putting most of his neo-pagan schoolboy politics into Crisis at this time, leaving his decent just-writing for Toxic!). Though, having said that, "Sex Warrior" is shite.

If the Megazine is searching for creator-owned material to reprint, they could do a lot worse than "Accident Man" and "Bogie Man", though. However, for purely selfish reasons, I'd prefer that they reprint any "Bogie Man" tales which didn't appear in Toxic!, cos I've got Toxic!...

General / The Quality Slump in the 90s
28 August, 2002, 03:51:57 PM
I'm looking forward to David Bishop's articles in the Megazine reaching the 90s era - maybe then I'll be able to find out why things went oh so horribly wrong for so long.

There were good tales in the 90s - don't get me wrong - it's just that if 4 out of 5 were good in the 80s then that dropped to around 2 out of 5 from around 91/92 to around 98/99, I reckon. And I'm intrigued to find out the reasons behind it.

Dilution from sharing talent with the new monthly/fortnightly Megazine, perhaps? A mass exodus of all-good-writers-except-Wagner, combined with Pat Mills spending time on Crisis (which I'm reading, and not thinking too much of, at the moment)? Loss of editorial direction? Management interference in editorial matters? I'm intrigued...

Complete the phrase "My name deserves to be used in a 2000AD story because..." in no more than 50 words and probably nothing at all will happen[1]

My entry is:

"My name deserves to be used in a 2000AD story because I came up with this stupid contest."

Roy

[1] Probably, nowt will happen. Mainly because I don't work for Rebellion, write/draw/paint/edit/etc for 2000AD or know anybody who does either

General / Where I'm Up To In Reading 2000AD
06 August, 2002, 09:59:32 PM
I started writing this as a PS to another message, but - like Topsy - it just growed. So I've split it off to here instead:

For those who are keeping count (and I'm sure there are thousands who are...Well, there *might* be...), my reading of 2000AD/etc is now almost up to date - just 2000AD progs 1289 upwards to go now.

That means I've now read all of 2000AD from prog 4 to prog 1288; all of the Megazines, from 1.01 to 4.14; all of the Starlords, 1-22 (but not the Starlord Special); all of the Sci-Fi, Summer, Winter, Mega-, Rogue Trooper and Action specials; all the Batman, Predator & Lobo cross-overs; all (bar #11) JD:LotF & the Special; all the DC Dredds; the 2000AD, Dan Dare, Starlord, Tornado & Rogue Trooper annuals; the Dredd movie adaptation; all the 2000AD & Dredd yearbooks; (the first two) Dicemans; (some of the) Poster Progs; (the first four) Daily Star Dredd collections; and 2000AD Diary and the Mega-History book.

Phew. Actually, looking at the list I just typed, it does look like a lot of comics, come to think of it, sad addict that I now am... What's astonished me is that I've loved every minute of it.

Well, aside from Fleischer & Mark Millar (Silo excepted). Oh, and Big Dave was crap (but I'll be shouted at again for saying that), as was Space Girls...But, overall, while the quality dipped a bit in the mid-90s, there was always *something* worth reading in the progs. And the quality of the progs I'm reading right now (the 1200s) is as good as the golden age of the 1980s, if you ask me.

Anyways - there's still a pile of Crisis, Revolver, Toxic and Marshall Law to wander through afterwards, though it won't be the same...

I draw the line at Tornado, though - I read the annuals and they gave me no reason to bother looking seriously for the comics (I did read Blast, but wasn't impressed).

Website and Forum / Graphical Interface to web site
27 July, 2002, 03:24:57 AM
I was browsing this site, looking for an issue, when it occurred to me that a nice graphical interface - using the mag covers - would be a good addition.

So I decided to write one, for my own convenience.

Not much use for people on slow net connections, I know (cos it's very graphically top-heavy), but if you have a high speed connection, you might find this useful.

The basic idea is that you choose the type of comic you want from the drop-down list at the top left. It then loads the covers up for you and you can click on them to either view a full-size cover pic or view the content of that issue (use the drop down list at the top-right to select what happens when you click a cover).

The top-middle middle drop down list lets you choose whether the thumbnails displayed are small, large or full-sized images. It defaults to small thumbnails which take you to the contents of the comic when you click on them.

I dunno how long this file will remain on the server, but feel free to save a copy or upload it anywhere you like.

The latest issue of the megazine and prog would need updating in the code whenever a new issue comes out if you want to be able to browse that issue too, and if you've downloaded and saved covers from the site then you can use those instead of re-downloading the files (instructions are in the menu.html file).

Enjoy

OK, I admit it - I just pointed that program at the site and downloaded the covers.

Anyways, when it finished I noticed that there's a cover scan missing from the site - there's no large ("hires") scan of prog 1281.

Well, at least that accomplished something kinda-useful, I s'pose...

Website and Forum / Wake's T-Shirt poll

> If the price is between ?15 and ?20, what type of t-shirts would you like to see in Tharg's Future Shop?

Since my preferred answer isn't given as an option, I'll put it here:

If the price is ?15 to ?20, I would expect the T-Shirts to be platinum plated and to grant wishes when rubbed vigorously.

Help! / How Does Ian Gibson Sign Things?
05 June, 2002, 02:15:40 PM
Hi - I've just read my prog 46, and I noticed something a little odd:

On each page of the Dredd story (which was drawn by Ian Gibson), "Gibson" is signed in blue ink.

The signatures are all small, all look pretty much the same, all are in different locations on the page (but always alongside & outside a frame of the story, and exactly one signature to each page) and they all look like the signatures of Ian Gibson which I've seen on his artwork.

Now, I picked up this prog dirt cheap in a bundle, so finding it unexpectedly (apparently) autographed on each Dredd strip page was unexpected. Particularly since the prog hasn't been wonderfully well cared for (the inside is fine, but the cover is in a terrible state - which is unexpected if these signatures are genuine). The rear inside cover is also signed "Gibson" in three places, though there doesn't appear to be any Gibson artwork on that page.

I'm not sure, then, whether Ian Gibson signed this prog or whether some previous owner decided to do so, for whatever reasons of his own.

My question, then, is: Is there any way to find out whether Ian Gibson actually signed this comic?

For example, does anyone have a comic signed by him, in which case, does he usually sign things in this way (i.e. the same signature as on his artwork, and signing every page of his in that prog)?

I've finally gotten around to uploading my duplicate progs to the Freeserve auctions site.

There are progs, megazines, annuals, specials, US reprints, DC Dredd, etc, on there.

Enjoy.

General / Judge Dredd Action Special 1996
22 May, 2002, 09:32:19 PM
Was the "Judge Dredd Action Special" actually published, or did it never show up?

I ask because I saw a single back-of-prog ad for it in 2000AD (but no follow up), and it's mentioned on Wake's old "collector's list" page.

On the other hand, I can't see it in this site's DB, I've never seen a copy on eBay/Yahoo/FSAuctions/this site's classifieds/etc and, if it exists, it's the only Special I don't have a copy of (and hence haven't read).

So was this published, or did it go the way of the Slaine "King of Hearts" Special (which wasn't published as a special, but was serialised in the prog, as far as I can see)?
