I totally agree. Bolland is a master Dredd artist. It would be great to entice him out of retirement for this special issue. It wouldd be great to have some other special one-off stories drawn by their definitive artists, such as: Rogue Trooper by David Gibbons, Slaine by Glenn Farby and of course Strontium Dog by Carlos Ezquerra! Any others for this wish list?

Prog / Re: 2002 Top Tens
21 December, 2001, 02:44:16 AM
Well, I did ask for your opinions. In the Death/Torquemada discussion, there isn't much to make them different: both are undead (for the most part) both believe fanatically in the rightness of their causes. If it comes down to quantity, I'd have to side with Torquemada. Judge Death may have judged his own worldd, and a good part of Dredd's city, but Torquemada led a campaign again all alien life in the galaxy. Many worlds were cleansed under his brutal crusade. For this reason, I have to side wih Brother Matt.

Prog / 2002 Top Tens
20 December, 2001, 03:52:24 AM
First of all...This is labelled SPOILER, so if you have not read 2002, turn away now...
Secondly, my views on the prog. I thought it was great! There was a nicely varied mix of the new (two great stories, can't wait for the next episodes) and something for the old readers like myself (V.C.s, Robusters, Bad Company) while still having the mainstays (Dredd, Dante, Sinister/Dexter) represented. All in all, an impressive effort by all concerned.
Now for my main part of the message. It seems that Tharg's droids have been reading our recent discussions in this forum. Many of the top tens have been the subject of discussion amongst us for a while now. All in all, I like the choices that have been made in these. I would like to know what the rest of you think. Any glaring ommissions? Any "whatt were they thinkings"?

I got a free prog 2002 as well. Must be because we have Megazine subscriptions.

Well, as long as Dredd: the Animated Series doesn't turn out like that watered down Robocop animation.

Shades of the Stainless Steel Rat's universe there perhaps. He had a healthy respect for the quality of life. And there always was Ace Trucking: he wasn't one to croak anybody.

How can we know what a classic series is going to be? If it's well scripted, has a great artist, has something for the vast and varied readership to appreciate, then you're on the right tracks. Other than that, it's difficult to predict what's going to be a classic. Did everyone say, "That Dante strip - that's going to run and run" when they first read it?

That's a blow if it is true. You would have thought there would have been a tribute in 2000ad if it had happened.

Right, here we go...
When Sam was ressurected for his abyissmal revamped run without the mighty Gibson as artist, I was prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt. Where it lost it for me was the Return to Verdus story. It effectively betrayed the spirit of the original Robohunter story, (I cannot  read the original now without it reminding me of what was done later). I mean, what were they playing at! Cutey in the original, a useful friend who sacrifices herself to save Sam, now a homicidal killing machine. The realy important comedy aspect of the original story is gone in a "Deerhunter" game of Russian Roulette with some of the original characers. Even Kidd is dealt with, effectively exploded out of the story. The Robohunter stories which came after this were slightly better, they tried to recapture some of the originals charm and comedy (but mostly failed). As for Ace - I really enjoyed this series but could it be brought back and still give the readers the same enjoyment. I cannot see it back without Belardinelli as the artist, what's he doing at the moment? But it can be done - the recent re-emergence of ABC Warriors had a lot of the spirit of the original!

Am I crazy or did Johnny Alpha not really "die" in the Final Solution. I seem to recall a Gronk based story in which Johnny Alpha (or at least part of him) appears. The Gronk actually finishes of "Mr Johnnys", or am I crazy?

I absolutely agree with the sentiments put forward in this message. There are 2000ad stories that I would love to have back, mostly because they didn't finish and I could realy do with the closure! The main problem is that there would no way to get the original artists/writers to ressurect their stories and even if they did, they would probably have to modernise them for today's readers. I cite the way the Dan Dare strip ended as an example. If the story was taken up today it probably wouldn't be all that different from that god-awful Revolver story. Robohunter certainly didn't get better when it was ressurected either. Saying this, I still would have liked to know what Feral of "trontium Dogs" actually turned in to. He's been in that coccoon for years now...

Thanks for taking the time to do this Watcher. The top and bottom twenties look a lot more representative of 2000ad and the Meg as a whole now.

I'm sorry if I came off as sounding as snooty to you. I used the expression "you people" because I couldn't be absolutley sure of the genders of those in this thread (sorry death monkey 23). I was simply covering my bases. As for the rest, in most of my messages, I do concentrate on the positive, and with 2000ad, that's an easy job. But you are right, you are perfectly entitled to voice your opinions in this board. And I am eagerly waiting for prog 2002 to come out as well. I'm sure we'll all have lots to say about it when we read it.

Can't you people concentrate on the positive instead of obsessing on the negative?
