Title: IDW Judge Dredd
Post by: BMCCOLL on 09 June, 2018, 08:53:43 PM
I don't know if this has been asked elsewhere. Are these any good and where do they stand in the official canon?

Cheers!

Depends what you're after.

The IDW Year One mini series written by Matt are very good.

Same with the Mars Attacks crossover written by Al Ewing - goofy fun.

Other than that, the City of Courts mini-series was interesting but might be an acquired taste - It's Dredd out of MC-1 anyway.

The first run of the ongoing series seemed to cram a lot in, but I've not read it extensively - a lot of people didn't care for that.

The Mega-City Zero/Blessed Earth is more like an alt universe/old man Dredd story. I've not read those either.

Early days on the new one - seems broadly positive though.

They're really their own thing like the DC Dredds were.

I'd say the first book or two of the ongoing series is OK but then is more or less becomes a mix of unreadable, incomprehensible and plain bilge. MC Zero and Blessed Earth are dire. City of Courts was mediocre.

The Matt Smith stuff and Mars Attacks are both worth a look though.

... They're really their own thing* like the DC Dredds were.

All of the above, plus Dredd's never been subjected to the endless Mulligans of something like Rogue Trooper, so there isn't really any such thing as canon.

It all happened, it's just we take the same attitude to certain stories as Her Majesty does to the mutated royal she keeps walled-up in a doorless room in Glamis castle (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-monster-of-glamis-92015626/).

Michael Carroll should be forced to write a story explaining how the Lawman Of The Future (https://comicvine.gamespot.com/judge-dredd-lawman-of-the-future/4050-50474/) comic was about the time Justice Department made another clone to replace Dredd while he was away being Sector Chief of The Pit.

* The only thing 2000ad seem to have adopted from IDW comics is the idea of loads of other Dark Judges, in Deadworld. Everyone seemed to think it was an awful idea when IDW did it.

Thanks for the feedback. From my impressions of what I've seen it appears IDW have gone off on a tangent somewhat. Stoneage MC-1 etc??? Guess I'll stick with the official line on this!

Nothing wrong with the idea. The execution, on the other hand...

IDWs line was always warped by the weird and failed logic of 'americians don't get Dredd' which is fallacious as the last 30 years of US comics history shows americians rarely 'get' anything that isn't either by the Big 2 or from one of their leading lights branching out into Image. So instead we got a bunch of people deliberately trying to not write 2000ad Dredd.

If you want americians to 'get' Dredd pay Scott Snyder or Jonathan Hickman to write it. Get Jim Lee or Sean Murphy to draw it. If you're not going to do that then the chances of Dredd breaking America are a crapshoot.

I say this as someone who reads pretty much any americian indie (image / aftershock / IDW / dark horse / Boom! Etc comic) first issue to see what it's got - so many great comics simply don't make it when they don't have a big name attached.

If that was true, then the US collections Rebellion put out with Grant Morrison, Mark Millar and Garth Ennis' names on the front would have already broken Dredd in the States. Those three names have huge brand recognition over there — you remember they tried that, with covers by JRjr, Bradstreet, et al? Didn't move the needle.

A limited number of very poor quality reprinted stories without attendant participatory publicity from the creator is hardly meeting the point I've made.

And I'm someone whose read a huge number of comics you've worked on that deserved much better US domestic appreciation but, for the same reason, didn't 'break'.

As for your covers point - we'll youve demolished your own point by referencing 'move the needle'.

Morrison and Millar are two of the biggest names in US comics. A collection of effectively 'new' work by either of them should garner interest and sales.

I have no idea what point you think you're making here.

That phrase existed before a particular shower of bastards appropriated it for a hashtag. I'll thank you not to lump me in with those fuckers, thankyouverymuch.

These are the only titles I enjoyed related to Dredd from IDW:

Judge Dredd: Year One (written by Matt Smith art by Simon Coleby)

and

Anderson, Psi-Division (written by Matt Smith art by Carl Critchlow)

Only you could read like you're picking a fight with someone actively complimenting your work. Sigh.

Huh. Not sure how that's a compliment, but whatever. Thank you, I guess...

However, lumping me in with those Diversity & Comics fuckers in order to blithely dismiss a point is hardly going to dispose me kindly towards a post.

I stated quite clearly imho that you've worked on books that deserved to do much better than they did and - as a collorary to my point on dredd, largely didn't because they weren't big 2 / offshoot work of big name big 2 creator.

I certainly don't lump you in with anyone. As far as I can see alt covers shift a few extra copies at a specialist price point (eg Ennis books) or for launch / early issues. They've nothing to do with whether a series breaks big / establishes a character / 'verse. But I case there is any confusion - i in no way think JC has owt to do with 'Diversity and Comics Fuckers'

Thank you. I appreciate that.
