Title: Done with everything?
Post by: Smith on 09 November, 2017, 01:59:05 PM
Ever had a feeling you read everything?I mean,it sounds pretentious, but I pretty much read  every comic I ever wanted."To read" list is done.I know there are tons of great stuff I havent even heard of,but is there a point?Like, what to do now?

I've felt like that numerous times. In the past I've taken breaks from comics almost entirely for a couple of years and then gone back later to see what I've missed.
I find I'm more reluctant to start new series than I've ever been. I seem to dislike many of the 'hyped' comics and I've never known a time when so many series are started and then abandoned (never start reading anything by Warren Ellis until it's finished)!
Having said that, I'm sure there's good stuff being produced all the time (my current favourite series is 'Kill or Be Killed - Brubaker and Phillips are a pretty reliable team).

Don't know if I would go with 'done' but certainly I'm finding it very hard at present to summon the enthusiasm to experiment.  A lot of what is currently being put out just seems so vacuous.  Then you start looking at the cost and it is hard to justify.  Perhaps it's the thought that when American comics first came across my radar properly back in the early eighties, the 40p top price didn't seem that much (even though it was 20% of my pocket money at the time!)  My non-tooth reading list is now just two of the X-men titles and the Power Pack relaunch, the latter mainly for my daughter (honest).

Any visit to a LCS tends to be little more than a cursory flick through the back issue boxes.  Most likely since I've collected everything that I've been chasing over the years and space is now at a premium.  A far cry from those halcyon days when any comic shop seemed like a cornucopia of delights and resulted in agonising deliberation about how to use meagre funds and comic conventions could be almost overwhelming!   :'(

[Bugger, what the hell happened?  I got old!]

I have no idea what your feeling could possibly feel like. I've been reading comics consistently for 18 years and feel I've only just scratched the surface. There are always more comics; books I've heard about but not followed up on, books I've never heard of, and (most importantly) books not yet created.  There are more good comics in this world then can probably be read in a single life time.

Just this month I've been delving into Roy Thomas's Earth 2 material from the 80s at DC (All Star Squadron & Infinity Inc). And started reading Battle Angel Alita, a 15 or 20 collection sequence, from Japan.

Always more comics.

Agreed. The challenge is in finding them (and it's so subjective. I've lost count of how many hyped or critically acclaimed series I've started and dropped because I didn't like them). The library is always useful of course, as are digital comics. If you try lots of comics and go a while without anything really 'clicking' it's quite disheartening though.

I'll agree about subjective tastes. And the narrower your genre tastes, the harder it's going to be. But I've always found that some of that is self limiting; "I don't like super-heroes", "I don't read black & white comics", "this series has been going on too long to get into know",  "All the best comics were made by five guys in the 80s". Silly stuff like that can really limit people's horizons.

I didnt say I read EVERYTHING,ofc.  ::)
This huge To-read list that I built for years is actually done, and again,it feels like I read everything that interested me.Im not particularly disillusioned or anything, its just that almost everything I hear about- I have either read it,or I don't like it.Yes,that includes almost every Image movie-pitch,comic.

I hear Mark Millar Netflix are going to start publishing show pitches comic books soon, so something there might grab your attention. I believe their first endeavour is a prohibition era gangster story but with wizards and shit.

I know what you mean - I get the prog and meg (and will never stop!), but my biggest spend was always Marvel TPBs - since the end of the marvel universe I've managed to make a clean break, I don't feel engaged in the "new" marvel universe, and the same goes for DC - they lost me about two reboots ago. This means that I spend less, but I can often visit a LCS or Waterstones and find nothing that piques my interest.

I have been buying a disproportionate number of Image comics at the moment - Sex Criminals is wonderful, dirty fun; Bitch Planet's also good and I've bought a few Vol.1s that I may not keep up with - Ten Grand by J Michael starzxsxscxsxsczsczksy (can't be arsed to look up correct seplling) and a couple of others whose name escapes me at the moment.

I'd need to give up work and read a lot faster to get through just the stuff I've *bought* (recently and loads from the early 90s before I got out). To be 'done' is an impossibility. Maybe I'm unusual.

Meanwhile, there are 22 unread Hachettes on the shelf...

Im reading 3 DC titles,1 from Image, nothing from Marvel, few IDW titles,1 from Valiant; so Im not really hurting for ongoing titles...

Have you read any of the old British newspaper strips that have been collected?
Jeff Hawke is really good, as is Modesty Blaise. Some of the Bond stuff is really good too.
Just mentioning it as this stuff seems to be a bit off the radar, but someone who likes 2000ad should enjoy all of these strips.

Something else I always recommend (but may take a bit of work to get hold of) are Alan Grant's various Batman runs (mainly with Breyfogle). He starts off in Detective Comics, moves on to Batman, then Shadow of the Bat and also some Legends of the Dark Knight. Most of the stories are done in one issue with the odd2/3 parter. You can usually pick these up for 50p and I'd definitely recommend trying them out if haven't already. Knowledge of continuity isn't really required.

This is my problem. I've just got too much stuff to read and though my reading list is half re-read its stupidly long. I've stopped buying things from digital sales, however good the offer and however much I'm interested them until it goes down a bit... well a lot.

As for experimenting I think the biggest issue I have with finding new titles is the gamble in how long they will last. So many of the stories I've enjoyed and invested in seem to be on hiatus or just plain ground to a halt. Stuff happens to creators and if stuff doesn't sell what can you do. It does however have an impact on the choices I make when picking a new series to try. It doesn't stop me getting stuff that really catches my eye, but it sets the bar higher.

I realise you didn't ask for recommendations, and you've probably read some, if not all of these, but here are a few series that I would wholeheartedly suggest taking a look at -

Locke and Key, Requiem Vampire Knight (Pat Mills at his most inventive), Descender, Black Science, Hellboy, Naruto (better than you think!), Full Metal Alchemist, Promethea, Top Ten, RASL, Saga.

I could go on, but you're probably already rolling your eyes, so I'll stop there.

Yes, I'm feeling pretty much done with comics. Have been reading for 40 years and my enthusiasm has dropped off a cliff the last couple of years. I'm putting it down to midlife crisis though! I'm not enthusiastic about much now.....mostly invest my energy in films.

RASL is really good. Very different tone to Bone (oh that rhymes!) but well worth checking out. His latest Tuki is also very good, but also victim to what I mention before. Its disappeared, though I believe Jeff Smith may have suffered some ill health (?), not his fault and I'm not apportioning blame or demanding its return and I don't really understand the circumstance. However when you invest in something as a reader its always disappointing when you don't get resolution.

The only things I buy regularly these days come from the House of Tharg.  Whenever Neil Gaiman brings out another new Sandman I get that (slightly less than once a decade - I can cope with that volume).  As for everything else, I don't have the space to store them or time to read them.

Pre-empting any suggestions about 'not having space to store them', if I were to ever go digital I'd have to have a much bigger screen (and more importantly, higher resolution) than anything I've tried reading a comic on.  I was in hospital a few years ago and somebody lent me an iPad pre-loaded with a comic reader and a number of subscriptions - while it was good to read them, there were two modes - full page where you couldn't read the lettering and readable lettering where you had to keep scrolling sideways and down for each page.

Something that has spurred me to read a wider variety, outside of Tooth and Meg, has been finding out about a comic group run by the local library.  Once a month I'm heading off after work, picking up a new supply of graphic novels (unfortunately series that look interesting invariably don't have their first issue available), trying to read as much of them as possible before the next month.  Currently on my list to pick up in future months:

I've got a BIG pile of stuff to shift but getting to eBay is way down the list. I try to only keep things I want to read again.... at some point. In the past when I've shifted stuff I found it quite cathartic and certainly focuses the mind on what stuff you still like and what stuff you no longer engage with. Its also a good way to see what you fancy re-reading, even if its just to check out whether its any good anymore.

I'm not sure I could ever be "done" with comics. That would be like saying "I'm never going to read a book/ watch TV/ see a film/ listen to music" again. But just as my tastes change with regard to what movies, albums, TV shows, books I read at any given time, so do my tastes on comics change.

At the moment I'm actively avoiding TV drama series- am two seasons behind on all the ones I like, and have no inclination to catch up. Prefer filling my TV time with The Chase, the news, Corrie, Emmerdale, and Jeremy Kyle. Similarly I can't be arsed with horror at the moment, and the only movies I'm watching are the Marvel adaptations and light comedies.

That will no doubt change.

But to think that I've read everything in comics and there can't be anything out there that would interest me, is to deny the breadth of the medium. Comics are my favourite thing. I could go without music, film, books and TV, but without comics I'd be very unhappy. It's the single greatest medium yet invented, and when I genuinely think "I've got nothing to read", I walk into Waterstones and take a punt on something that takes my interest. Did this last week with the first volume of 'Black Hammer', which turned out to be sensational. I'm eyeing a bunch of graphic novel adaptations of the lives of old musicians that I found in our local arty-farty bookshop too. And if that fails, then fuck it, I'll just break out my collection of Toxic, and read through them for the umpteenth time.

There's a whole bunch of stuff out there to read. Unlike a lot of you, I love American superhero comics with the same kind of passion we all reserve for the prog. To see them collected in beautiful editions on the shelves of bookshops (plural!) in my piss-poor and dying seaside town, fills me with unquenchable joy. You'll pry my last comic from my cold, dead fingers.

I had a few fallow comic years, but then did some research and ended up enjoying this stuff a lot:

Battlefields and War Stories (Ennis)
Top 10 (Moore)
Runaways (1st collection: Marvel)
Ms. Marvel [reading this to my daughter as bed time stories]
Saga (Image)
Powers (the 1st one: Icon)
Locke & Key
Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. (Ellis)
Rat Queens vol 1 (2 is okay and 3 jumps the shark - then kills it slowly with blunt spoons)

And in a land without pictures, you might feast on:

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie
Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey

(Warning: both of the above may lead to many more purchases.)

That's a good reminder on Ennis' Battlefields.  I'd lost track after the original Vertigo run but he's been at it for quite a while now.  Wife nagging about Christmas list so perhaps those should be added.

I guess while we are in this area, the Titan Battle reprints are obvious purchases?  Not just the Charley's War which Rebellion have lined up for another run but also Johnny Red, Darkies Mob, Major Eazy (unfortunately a stumbled collection), Rat Pack and the two Battle Classic volumes with HMS Nightshade and Fighting Mann.  Johnny Red leads neatly on to the recent Titan series which worked quite well, which leads us on to their HookJaw series which was a nice little read.  Running at the same time as Gibson's Archangel ...

Do we want to get moderators to rename this thread the "You've gotta read this!"

Battlefields and War Stories (Ennis) - Yes,I did.
Top 10 (Moore) - Actually,not sure if I have.
Runaways (1st collection: Marvel) -Also the only good one.
Ms. Marvel - Dont care for modern Marvel, dont care for whiny fangirls, sorry.
Saga (Image) - I tried but its not my thing
Powers (the 1st one: Icon) - few volumes of it,I lost interest later on
Locke & Key - I read some of it,but I cant recall if I finished it.
Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. (Ellis) -Yes.
Rat Queens vol 1 (2 is okay and 3 jumps the shark - then kills it slowly with blunt spoons) -Actually,I didn't,so I might check that out.

Yes I did,a few years back. :)
Tv show is still in development.right?

Fantastic book. IMO the Twin peaks (since it's mysteries are still largely intact) and The wire of comics.

I'd recommend anything by Azzarello and Risso. Spaceman, the 100Bullets spin off Brother Lono as well as the ongoing Werewolf/hillbilly horror book Moonshine :)

It's been announced several times. Several parties have been interested. Problem is that someone starts shooting people now and then in America, and the premise of such show becomes a tough sell. Even if it quite clearly isn't in favor of gun violence.

Tried re reading some of your favorite books? It's what I'v done when I'v gotten the idea that I had read all there was. I've always found some new similar books, or realised there where even genres I hadn't given a try.

Aye!  I second this.  I tried a new genre for the first time the other day - I read 'Get Shorty' by Elmore Leonard.  It was awesome!

I'll get back to my comic pile at some point though...
