Nick Percival might have gone out in the first round of the Current Tourney but he ran Dave Taylor incredibly close. Has any artist in 2000ad's history master horror quite like he does? He's got another tough draw though facing off against Bryan Talbot who only got knocked out of the Classic tourney in the second round by coming up against that other Nemesis artist Kev O'Neill. Who wins out here?

Time for you to decide your favourite as the droids square up to the tee...

Remember for this tourney you have 5 votes to distribute as you please between these two artists, whole numbers only. So you can vote 5 - 0; 4 - 1; or 3 - 2; either way depending on how much more you like one artist's work over the other.

If you can't be doing with that just name your favourite - remember bold tags, or other ways of highlighting always appreciated - and I'll give them 3 votes and nowt to the other droid.

Three day votes, so this one ends morning of Saturday 29th May

Remember we only consider work for Tharg in these Tourneys

What the heck is all this about - well we have a thread for that

How does this new voting work? Look here and why again?

Downthetubes has a fantastic article about Craig Davison and his art. If you feel in anyway nostalgic about the way you played as a kid check his stuff out its astonishing. Lovely image of 'Judge Dredd' too at the bottom of the article.

There's links in the article to his website where you can see even more of the lovely stuff. Not sure how realistic this would be but if Tharg could get a Star Scan - well it would be very nice wouldn't it.

So into the second half now - the back 16 if you will and Classic Team aren't messin' about. They intend to hit the second half hard. And it doesn't get much better than Classic Tourney semi-finalists Mike McMahon. I mean is there an artist who's produced more iconic Dredd images? And that's before we consider his Slaine?

Poor Ol' Jack Lynch has the unenviable task of facing off against this titan. We shouldn't feel to sorry for him as Jake Lynch is an artist who has forged an incredible style and power to his art. I'll not lie and say I won't be surprised if he makes much of an impression here BUT that is not for lack of talent.

Big week for Classic Team this one. After such a confident start their lead had been clawed back and finally at the end of last weeks ties over... whoops that's spoilers that is... well for a couple of minutes at least. Suffice to say they need a big week to restore confident. Will they get it?

Well the week starts with a doozy. A tie I personally find almost impossible to call as it involves two of my personal favourite. David Taylor art has developed over the years and has such an astonishing European influence. He met Henry Flint second round of the Current Tourney. He's just been getting better and better though, even since then and his latest series 'Megatropolis' seems to have been a smash hit with fans. Jesus Redondo on the other hand HAIRY SPIDERS. I mean sure his art is so much more than that but HAIRY SPIDERS. For me Jesus was by far the best of the European artists (well possibly one exception aside I guess!) that graced the early Prog and one of the best Tharg has had. Alas he meet Ron Smith in the 2nd Round of the Classic Tourney and fell aside there. How do we choose between them...

Neither of these artists got past the 2nd round of their respective tourneys - but to be fair to Chris Weston it took a casting vote from me to deny him a Quarter-Final slot. The vote couldn't decide on the details between him and Phil Winslade. While there might be common ground between those two there is a whole load of contrast with the artist he is drawn against here. John Hicklenton's contorted art is like nothing we've seen before or since.

Not much to say here really is there, the CHAMPION of the Current Team, the most popular artist of this time. Can even an artist who changed the very face of art in the Galaxy's Greatest - for good and ill - take this tie? Few artists can claim quite a magnificent portfolio of stories as John M Burns, alongside some of the great Dredd tales, he waged war with Dante, crossed time and dimensions with The Order, his unmatched (to my eyes) paints showing the mastery of his craft he has learnt over decades at the drawing board. Alas in the Current tourney he was drawn against his Dante partner in the first round!

Mind speaking of classic Dredd and fine paints Peter Doherty knows a thing or two about both of those! It was hardly his fault he got Massimo in the first round of the Classic comp!

I said Patrick Goddard is for me one of the great under-appreciated talents of 2000ad and here we have another in the Current Team. Paul Marshall has knocked it out the park time and again over a long career. I think the fact that he grounds even the most astonishing John Smith script maybe undersells his talent, as he seeming;y effortless sells us the reality of the surreal world Tharg brings us? So how will he fare against a fan favourite, who took down no lesser light than Dave Gibbons on his way to the Quarter Finals in the Classic side of the art tourney? Can this be anything other than a classic win?

Before the last three votes of last week this tourney looked over as a competition with Classic team storming into a 6 : 1 lead. But Current Team don't know their beat and managed to rally with three straight wins. There is still a gap but its a lot closers at 6 : 4.  S knowing the draw this week is super important for the Current Team, you could well argue that it contains its strongest field of any week, they need to pick up points here.

So starting with The Mighty Yeowell is not a bad way to go, even if he did go out in the second round of the Current Tourney. Few have had such an impact, on so many great series, over such a long time as Steve. I've never hidden my personal belief that he is one of 2000ad definitive artists and a personal fav. So I was a little disappointed when he drew another artist I adore (mind how many times has that happened for folks in this competition) in Simon Fraser, who drawing Steve Dillon didn't get out of the first round of his tourney, but no shame in that at all. Irving's art is so distinctive and bold can even the Mighty Yeowell topple him?

Prog / Prog 2232 - A Small Sacrifice?
15 May, 2021, 06:05:10 PM
The Prog all but clears its decks as we head into next week Regened Prog which I'm very much looking forward to seeing if it continues the momentum they've been building. I'm also happier with the way its not going to interupt the momentum of most other stories.

Dredd - for some reason I thought there was going to be more to this one. As it is its a beautifully drawn Future Shock with Dredd. Perfectly effective in that and very enjoyable, but after the excellent set up last week felt a little disappointed it was done so briskly. Still once I'm over that hard to deny its a fun story with another citzen getting a happy ending - all be it at a cost - what the hell is going on in Mega City One these days?!?

Intestinauts is well realised fun with a neatly horrific ending. Hard not to be washed along with the playful charm of this one.

Feral and Foe - the one that gets interrupted but does so at a decent point with a neat like self contained bit of trickery allowing our heroes to escape to their destination. Looking forward to getting this one back for what I assume will be its final act?

Decent Terror Tales though it did rather feel like John Tomlinson was trying a little too hard to slam two ideas together.

and then the big one how does Thistlebone stick the landing. Well with brutal bloody horror that's how. The sort of brutal bloody horror that makes you want to immediately go back and read the whole series from the off to see if you've missed any clues or foreshadowing. Its fantastic stuff and hope we spend more time in the woods... though if we don't this has been perfectly formed as if. Well done all concerned.

Thrills of the Future gives us the Chimpsky series we know is on the way so happy with that. Good Prog.

Patrick Goddard is an under-rated genius in my eyes. His art is so 2000ad, tight and nimble, yet with a rugged strength. Clean and sharp, yet with a grit that feels so grounded and real. He might have only got to the second round of the Current tourney, but I think his art is long overdue reappraisal. Kev Walker didn't get out the first round of the Classic tourney BUT he drew Mike McMahon so his form can't be based on that. His art has developed so completely across this long time under Tharg's wing that in some ways he's hard to pin down. Do you love his close, precious inks when he started, his bright, tidy painted work in ABCs, or his clinical high contrast later work? Or does his simple variety ring your bells?

I asked the question in the result I annouced today where will Current Team find it victories, well maybe it needs to be ties like this?

Both these artists went out in the first round of their respective tournaments - which really surprised me. Both started around the same time. Jock though burnt so bright before we knew it he was off to America and became quite the star there. We were lucky enough to keep PJ though and we've seen him get better and better before our eyes, so much so he's the co-creator of one of the comics biggest hit characters of the last couple of years, while still forging an impressive career elsewhere.

But remember folks it doesn't matter how much you loved Stingbags or the cover of Detective 881 we only deal in the realm of Tharg here.

I have to be honest I was shocked when Dom Reardon went out in the first round of the Current Tourney, though it was a very close run thing with Simon Coloeby. His high contrast art perfectly captures the grotesque horrors of Tharg's darker side. Simon Harrison also shocked me in the first round of his tourney knocking out personal fav Colin Wilson, but I do love his art, but it can be marmite, losing out to the clean lines of Alan Davis in the next round.

Crunch match. Times have been hard for Current Team and they find themselves in the wake of Classic Team by a margin that feels hard to pull back already. So time for them to pull out one of their really big guns. Even if Brendan McCarthy did go out in the 2nd Round of the Current Tourney it was to the eventual winner so his form is hard to read. But dagnabbit the moment they do this look what Classic hit back with a Quarter Finalist from their own tourney.

Both Brendan and Massimo are more than capable of producing magnificent, surreal, mind bending art. So I guess the question is which psychedelic wonderscapes rock your boat the most?... or do you just like bald men with beards in your art?

Just as the Current Team need a break the big names keep coming for the Classic Team. This time the Current Team have pulled out an artist responsible for one of, if not the, most popular new strips in years, last year. So this could get interesting.

Ron Smith though got to the semi final of the Classic Art Droid tourney and then was voted favourite over Mike McMahon to claim third place. So unsurprisingly confidence must be high in the Classic Team for this tie.

Mark Harrison got to the second round of the Current Tourney to only very narrowly get knocked out by the eventual runner up in that competition. Looking for signs of hope? Well Mark Harrison ran D'Israeli very close - D'Israeli then went on to run Ron Smith very close in the Champion of Champions event. So it will only take a slight shift in form for either of these artists for an apparent upset to come about. Is that possible...

Prog / Prog 2231 - Take Cover, Citizens!
08 May, 2021, 05:31:36 PM
And those high velocity thrills do indeed keep coming.

Dredd Mike Carroll accompanied by Simon Fraser with some frankly glorious art open a Dredd with full effect. Its a wonderful opener about a daughter inheriting a fortune from parents who ... well they didn't tell her were their money came from. Dredd only appears on the final page but with enough information to see how he will impact on this story. Its a blinder I have to say.

Thistlebone crashes into its final act and truths are told and we are left to wonder just what Thistlebone is and its dark impact on those that visit the woods... I think we will be left wondering as the horror snaps up a notch.

Intestinauts is beautifully rendered and has some sharp fun ideas and moments its building a nice head of steam.

Future Shocks - well the art is lovely. The story... its trying a little too hard with the snappy future talk if you ask me and it just obsures what I think is a decent story, but one that will need a re-read which this doesn't quite do enough to justify.

Feral and Foe is curiously calmer with reflections and revelations - I enjoyed it all the more for the change of pace.

Good Prog.

As if the news of the morning wasn't bad enough for Current Team the Classic Team is rolling out some very big guns these last couple of rounds - if there was to be a strong start for the Current Team it's hard to imagine it not being pulled back...

That said to my surprise Brian Bolland actually only got to Round 2 in the Classic Tourney swamped as he was by a tide of love for Massimo Belardinelli - it wasn't even that close. That feels a slight false view of this much loved droid.

Likewise Lee Carter got to the second round of the Current Tourney where he was swamped by a tide of love for Cliff Robinson. Can his crisp imaginative stylings surprise us against Bolland?

Aliens, you want aliens - these two give you aliens and then some.

Kev O'Neill didn't get past the Quarter Finals in the Classic Tourney, but then that is very probably due to the fact he drew Carlos there and so we'll never know quite how well he'd have done in other circumstances. His victory in the Festive Fronts tourney possibly gives a clearer indication of how highly he is regarded.

Two lesser lights one could argue... could, you'd be wrong but you could...one of these went out in the first rounds and another didn't even qualify - they are one of my indulgences or wildcards you could say. Mind Neil Googe did go out to the eventual winner so who knows? Anyway they will make for a great round of contrasting styles I'd suggest.

I love the work of Jim Baikie and I was quietly mortified when he didn't qualify for the tourney proper back in November (was it?). His work on Skizz and New Statesmen for sister comic and therefore qualifying for consideration Crisis is some of my favourite ever in the house of Tharg. Let's see if he justifies my love!

I've started to re-read Survival Geeks recently and doing that has made me appreciate just how under appreciated Neil Googe was in my mind. His work on that series is simply astonishingly good. I mean really. He is one of those modern artists that when I look at his work I really wonder if he'd been around in the early days just how lauded he'd be? Hope he gets a new series from Tharg soon.
