Title: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game.
Post by: DavidXBrunt on 23 September, 2006, 02:13:33 PM
So, another UD thread. Sorry. But this one has a specific purpose. To celebrate the upcoming paperback release of Button Man : The Killing Game lets have one of our own. A Killing Game.

The idea is that those that want to play start a new character. They list that characters name, and what type of character it is. Although they can be called whatever they like their description must start with TKG so that we have a clear identifying marker. We then have to hunt each other down and keep on killing until their is only one player left. Deaths are reported here.

When a character dies that's it, they can't come back as a zombie, they are out of the game and lost forever, no matter how they die. However if you die before the winner is announced you can start afresh with a new character.

It's an excuse to have a Player Killing Rampage but only amongst a select few.

Anyone up for this?

Never really got into UD - is it relatively easy to play, whats the URL?

I like the sound of a Button Man game though.

Very easy to play indeed. It's basically a limited turn role playing game with people moving around the grid finding objects, interacting, having fun, fighting.

We'd be using the board to play out our private vendettas, and it would work best with multiple players to help us narrow down the field. Though it's a large grid you often stumble across people you know and, well, give it a go.

Now to kill something!

Or even, figure out what the buggery I do ;-)

Tutorial. Find safety. You can enter any vuilding that is Very Strongly barricaded or less. If you are on the streets when you run out of Action Points you're dead.

Then build up action points so that you can buy skills. You can buy points by attacking someone succesfully, by healing someone, by clearing a building of bodies, by reading a book (sometimes) and so on. When you have a 100 points you can buy skills that come in very usefull.

I will be starting a character tomorrow evening to give you a head start and we'll see how many people join in. Official kick off is Wednseday noon, anyone joining before hand gets a little bonus time to build up their skills.

Great idea, DXB.  I'm in.  As a further suggestion, how about we have the chance to take two markers (i.e. kills) before a third makes death permanent, and the player must retire from the game?  Rather than a one-off quick death...  maybe this would make it a bit long-running, but if you get killed by another player you have the opportunity to get revived and hunt in down in a cat-and-mouse game worthy of Button Man...

Screenshots of warnings and kills would be a good idea, and players should keep a record of remaining markers in their profile.

Thoughts?

sounds good - so can we start powering up our characters - and so long as I dont meet my other self, i wont mess up my long standing survivor?

If were all new characters, shouldnt we all "start together" - eg register them on the same day, so theres no chance to get a quick advantage?

Or should I register someone fast and start building them up!
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: Leigh S on 24 September, 2006, 09:59:17 PM
Also, I reckon that if we are talking low level characters, theres a good chance we'll be wiped out before anyone meets - maybe only a verified TKG on TKG "Kill" counts - you could take a screenshot to prove it.  Otherwise, you have say two days to revive or your out of the running (to stop people hiding as zombies) - if everyone is on everyone elses contacts, you could keep track of who was dead at any given time
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....

Actually that makes sense. Death only counts if you die at the hands of a living TKGer, anyone?

How about adding in the tracker device from Button Man III?  At the end of each day's play (starting Wednesday), you report in your position.  Only which town you're in, obviously, not which building...
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: DavidXBrunt on 25 September, 2006, 08:23:27 AM
A good idea. I was thinking last night that maybe we should have a limited grid. If we limited ourselves to a single suburb we'd still have a hundred squares to use and, well, we'd have some action instead of protracted search.
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: ming on 25 September, 2006, 08:47:39 AM
Johnny Dial already bought the farm!  I forgot what a pain not having free-running is, and dropping a new character in territory recently occupied by a zombie horde wasn't a great start.  However, a bit of shuffing got me to a revive point, where I was stuck with a syringe by none other than Tharg the Mighty!  Cheers, Green Bonce!

Are you sure one burb will be enough?  If there are 10 or more players in an area with 50 buildings, you'll be tripping over one another!

I like the reporting in as to which burb your in - then you can choose who youre after, and know who is on your tail - so long as everyones honest!

8 surrounding - me idiot!
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: Dudley on 25 September, 2006, 12:55:23 PM
I like Dakerstown & surrounding as that's only 200 buildings and thus a realistic chance of catching each other.  What do others think?

Also, does some kind experienced neutral character with the ability to revive zeds fancy making their way over there?

::"Funt's fantastical tactical map..."

I'm going to steal that name, you know.

I have two versions:
Tactical Beta B (http://www.amenable.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/metatac/%22%20target=%22_blank)
(Overlay version - you can use the magic buttons to switch things on and off - but no close-up of single 'burbs.  Fetch your specs, luv.)

(Both perversely work best in IE6, and the transparent overlays do something odd in Safari.)

I have a character based in southern Judgewood that I'd be willing to have handle revives.  Anyone willing to assist, make your way to the self-proclaimed Peet Nation.

It's a 5-block zone not connected to any other buildings in Malton.  It's got a NecroTech (14,19: The Peet Building), an entry point (15,19: St. Basil's Church) and three safehouse blocks at EHB.

The revive point would be Gamlen Plaza (14, 20) - actually in Chudleyton, so neutral territory.

Would that be okay and has anyone got a spare character to help with a) keeping Peet Nation secure and b) revives for The Killing Game?

TKG Karl Heinrich revived.

(As a neutral observer, I thought the game was going to be Dakerstown, Jensentown, Roywood and Judgewood - which is why I chose this location as a revive point.)

Please replace those images with something smaller - for the sake of bandwidth everywhere.
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: Dog Deever on 16 October, 2006, 11:26:52 PM
Didn't it get extended to all the suburbs around Judgewood- a 9 block square, also taking in Quarlesbank, Gatcombeton, Peddlesden Village, Chudleyton and Darvall Heights? This would make it legit kill, so I guess it would be an idea to establish the parameters in this 'test case'.

Might be an idea to trim maps, building descriptions  and equipment from screenshots anyway, so as not to give out too much information! (Cheeky graffiti left in earns style points!*)

Didn't it get extended to all the suburbs around Judgewood- a 9 block square

I thought it was just the four in the top left corner.
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: ming on 17 October, 2006, 08:49:59 AM
I don't think there was a definitive decision about the location, but I thought the last thing mentioned was the 9 'burbs around Judgewood, and as no-one disagreed, I went with that.  Seems Karl Heinrich did, too ;-)

Having a smaller area would make it easier (or more dangerous) so the four in the top left corner would be okay as far as I'm concerned - we just need to decide.

I purposely left the location in the screenshot as I thought giving a hint to other Buttonmen about possible locations to hunt may add to the cat-and-mouse aspect of this.  I thought this might be good, especially with a huge area involved, but if we scale things down...  One other thing - with more than half of the Buttonmen involved are zeds or dead civilians (they were last time I looked), the chances of actually running into anyone you want to have a pop at are remote.  So, shall we go for the 4 'burbs in the NW?

Oh - and the screenshot was just Apple-Shift-4 and drag the crosshairs; none of this 'paste into paint' rubbish :-)

Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....

Surely we can't leave the killing ground at all - otherwise I could just hide elsewhere in Malton and only emerge when there was only one person left?

At the 'official' start at the weekend, I was keeping in the eight 'burbs around Judgewood, but now I though we were all sticking to the four in the north-west?

No sneaking in and out of the killing zone!  That would just make it too easy to stay out of harms way.  A shame there are no malls for re-supply, but them's the breaks.

All agreed?

Actually, the Killing is a good idea.

We could arrange a week long event where folks could register any character of theirs (goodness knows there are plenty of us with characters all maxed out) who then enter a four suburb square for a last man standing event.

The main criteria would have to be that only the characters logged on the thread could be targetted, so only one each.

An Idea for after TKG has finished?

Yeah - I stuck some graffiti up saying "be nice to the zeds waiting for a revive", but I'm pretty sure that our little home-from-home is being used by a bunch of noobs as an XP-harvesting base.

We'll certainly have words with anyone taking out non-rotters.
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: Funt Solo on 26 October, 2006, 01:26:30 PM
I think this is an accurate scoreboard:

Name (Fingers Lost)
Rent Treznor (0)
Johnny Dial (0)
Karl Heinrich (2)
Penguin (0)
Tarka the Rotter (1)
Bolt01 (0)
HarryRamsden (1)
LionelBlair (1)
Florian (1)
Malcolm (1)
Harry Powell (1)

Any corrections welcome - especially of anyone who's not taking part anymore.  Plus, I assume that buttons are keeping a note of their number of kills - it's difficult to keep track as I don't know whose (2000AD) username fits which (UD) character name.
Title: Re: URBAN DEAD - The Killing Game....
Post by: ming on 26 October, 2006, 01:34:34 PM
That looks right to me.  Trent Reznor may be out, as he's been a zombie since the off, and hasn't gained any XP.  Of course he may just be hiding in a doorway somewhere until the odds are reduced in his favour...

Meanwhile, I'd suggest Buttons keep a track of markers remaining and those taken in their profile (like wot Johnny Dial's been doing), just so we can keep track easier.

Infamy!, infamy!, etc.  Obviously, both Buttons have to be alive at the time a marker is taken.

DXB, Johnny Dial has killed Lionel Blair ONCE (see up the thread) and I certainly wouldn't be taking a pop at anyone in a zombie state.  Hope that's clear.  I don't know where the confusion has come in; I've not seen you since I dumped you and your twinkling toes in the street earlier this week! (and you were alive when we first met...)

Anyone who fancies some XP's could consider topping the zombies inside the Peet Building before legging it to hide from other buttonmen- even a few shots would greatly assist in getting the revive point up and running.

Funt- perhaps we should temporarily relocate, as the zeds outside Peet are 'mobbing up' and the genny is gone, Roadnight Auto is also totally garbage for searching for fuel, maybe heading North, more central to TKG game? What do you reckon?

For now, TKG button men should check out the revive points on the barricade map for Judgewood (scroll to the bottom of the page) at http://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php/Judgewood

New revive point: a cemetery [16, 11] in North Judgewood.

Watcher - thanks for the offer, but it looks like Peet is the target of an organised gang of undead - and the other survivors nearby aren't organised enough to resist the incursion.  Feel free to help us out up in Judgewood, though.

TKG Penguin ran into both Harry Powell & Johnny Dial & was then faced with the decision of who to take down. Harry Powell, who's lost two markers already or Johnny Dial who has no floppy fingers in his marigolds?

Sorry Mr Dial. If it's any consolation I gave Harry a swift chop of the fire axe in passing.

The Zombie JudgeXDredd burst into the Billet PD in PitneyBank and set about savafing and infecting as many survivors as possible. Then, with recognition flooding through his dead synapses he stood before a tall, green figure. Huh? He felt unable to attack, his hunger sated bu the raw thrillpower emanating from THE MIGHTY ONE. He turned away and snacked on the next living being.

If anyone wants to earn a Krill Tro Thargo nip over and help green genes afore the stomm hits the fan.

Penguin is up & about & heading towards Dakerstown hoping that a ceasefire is declared until then as a knackered laptop is severely restricting his movements. That & no flippers.

Okeydokey - all surviving Buttonmen holster your weapons and be in Dakerstown by Monday.  No killing (or nibbling) before then.  Once Monday rolls around, we all stick to Dakerstown and Dakerstown only.  We may need to get a M*A*S*H unit there for the odd revive, but given the number of fingers we have left, not many.

Or is there a new revive point up Dakerstown way?

A friend of mine says his character has just pulled out of Darkerstown. He says a Nazi group, which his group had wiped out, has decided to stay dead and team up with an undead group in Darkerstown  in an attempt to turn the suburb into a 'dead zone'. High on their list is the closure of the suburbs only Necrotech facility. This might be a dangerous place to play out the 'final episode'.

Dog Deever has gone South a bit in an effort to get revived. Hopefully he should be back up over the weekend. With syringes (with luck!).

Judgewood is probably in the best shape (at least according to my recent wanderings through Roywood and Jensentown); NE Dakerstown may be okay but the rest is a train-wreck.  Shall we reconvene in Judgewood?  Johnny Dial can try and get Peet back online, if it isn't already.  Thoughts?

Or does 'the finger' have the place booby trapped? ;p

Mmmm, boobies...  No, no tricks, but I'll scout around a bit to make sure the place looks okay 'cade-wise, and I'll check out Peet.  Jensentown might be okay as well, so someone just decide and let the rest of us know.  Bolt?  Penguin?  Lionel?  Any preferences?

Johnny Dial, late of this parish, is one north of Peet with Malcolm.  3 zeds outside Peet as I type, but any chance of a revive would be appreciated.  Judgewood is looking bad, but not as bad as Dakerstown - now the only official 'ghost town' 'burb in Malton.

Johnny Dial turned over a new leaf and revived a still activeBolt - only for him to then go and kill a retired buttonman on revive duty?  For shame!  What, were there no puppies that needed drowning?  Boooo, hisss, etc.  As soon as I get revived, I'll be on the case, Watch.

Johnny Dial took Bolt01's last marker this morning - justice of a sorts for that bad business with Karl Heinrich.  I have a feeling Penguin may pounce soon, but it's been a good run up to now; well played all!

Ah well, to be fair that was probably all he deserved.

Well timed too, as I'm about to go on my hols for a fortnight tomorrow. I look forward to seeing who the final winner is of this, and thank everyone for a great game.

TKGBolt-01 is dead.

The penguin has pounced. Only just read this, thought Bolt was still left! It has been great fun, can't believe it's over & Penguin is still standing. What's next?

Well done, Penguin - and well played all!  This has been good fun, and if we decide to have round two at some point, I'd be up for it.

As for what next, I'd suggest a Buttonman convention in a pub somewhere, and then a spell of retirement.  In the meantime, Johnny Dial will be listing his collection of fingers on eBay any day now.

Hows about we have a break and then we can either work out team rules or a hunt - where the losers have to track down the penguin, Suggestions for rules?

And congratulations.

Hunt the penguin? That's a bit DasterdlyXMuttley!

Looking at the 'scores on the board' Johnny Dial should have won this, I just got lucky in the choice of suburb.

If any one does want to hunt him though, he's still in Quarlesbank hiding in the building he's been in for the past two weeks (except when he's been dead)

Well done Penguin!  Our notoriety is spreading - got asked about the killing Game by another survivor, so I've pointed them in this direction - I'm up for another game, either with our "veterans", or starting afresh with newbies, or whatever combination sounds interesting
