General / Greg Staples in Imagine FX
28 August, 2007, 12:04:30 PM
Just a heads up to let you folks know that there's a 6-page article on the god-like Staples droid in the new issue of Imagine FX.

Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I'm looking forward to a lunch-break treat!

Cheers

I had a nice surprise like this a few years back at a comic shop in Brighton- bought the old Titan imprint of Halo Jones Book One, and while I was still at the till (but had paid) found it was signed by Moore and Gibson, wherupon the shop offered to buy it back from me for double the price. I declined their offer!

Hi Umpty

I help teach at the National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University- the two core packages we use here are Softimage:XSI and Maya, both of which are superb in pretty much all areas of 3D modelling and animation. They're also jolly expensive, but both also have free 'learning editions' which can be downloaded, and there's a pretty nice site called www.3dbuzz.com that offers some nice free video tutorials for beginers. Hope this helps!

General / Help locating character

Hi there peeps

One of my students is trying to track down a character from the early days of 2000ad, and what he tells me doesn't ring any bells... any ideas?

He says he wore big shades and fired a water pistol filled with acid. Apparently he had his own strip, rather than being a bit-part character in another strip.

I know that's a bit vague, but any help gratefully received!

Film & TV / Casino Royale Full Trailer

Howdy Peeps

I remember an age ago taking part in a discussion here as to whether the Bond franchise was about to disappear without trace after Brosnan left/got the shove.

Just seen the full trailer for Casino Royale, and have to say I'm putting my misgivings about Daniel Craig to the side for the time being. I reckon this looks bloody ace!

What's everyone else think?

Depends rather on what you mean by a dodgy call, but if it was a suspect sales call, you can put yourself on something called the Telephone Preference Service, which effectively makes it illegal for companies to cold-call you, and they get slapped with a big fine if they do.

This should mean (in theory, at least) that all 'legitimate' companies will take you off their records, and you can assume that any other calls are suspect.

Call the operator and ask for details of the TPS

Hi Bou

Some great tips on the basics of good animation technique can be found at the site of Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, who were two of the pioneering Disney animators. Link below

Also, be sure to check out a book called The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams- it's a beauty!

In case anyone out there has a spare few hundred quid and share my love of Hammer/Twins of Evil/Lust for a Vampire and Bruce Timm artwork, they mayt want to check this out. I've been eyeing it up for bloody ages. Sadly I see no possibility of getting than kind of cash together anytime soon!

Just a thought on this- I heard someplace that this volume will deal with various different incarnations of the League and therefore different time-frames.

I'm assuming that the Tijuana Bible insert means we'll see a League from the 30s/40s kind of time, the 3-D glasses suggests an 80s League, and the "stunning cutaway double page spread" presumably means a 1950s League (assuming it's going to be in the style of the Eagle centre-page spreads)

Books & Comics / Re: Titan Dan Dare Reprints.........

I would certainly agree with that- the Hawk volumes deliberately took a 'warts and all' approach, reprinting from the printed page, rather than from original artwork (including in some cases folds in the comic etc, if I remember rightly)

I assume the Titan volumes have dome the same- the reason the Man Who Drew Tomorrow examples are so fine is that they are from original art, rather than 'second hand'

"You've got nothing on my Halo Jones GN signed by Dr Robert Winston"

Strange you should say that, Tu-Plang- I've got a copy of the Titan's Halo Jones Book One, signed by Gibson and Moore...

...also John Wagner, Kev O'Neill and Bryan Talbot.

That's a good point, of course- it does seem slightly odd having Burton and Bisley on there.

Early progs signed by the likes of Wagner or McMahon must be a bit thin on the ground, though?

Not sure if the other good folks on the board have caught this, but I noticed that there's a rather good lot in the May auction at www.compalcomics.com:

Good, bright copy of Prog One, with spinner, signed by John Wagner, Alan Moore, Mike McMahon, Kev O'Neill, Simon Bisley, Brian Bolland and Richard Burton.

The reserve is a slightly laughable ?300-350. I reckon it should top that EASILY. Anyone going to go for it?
