Film & TV / Misfits Series 2
11 November, 2010, 07:28:22 PM
On tonight 10 pm on E4!

I really liked last series, so I'm looking forward to this.

Unfortunately I've already read a spoiler on a so called 'spoiler free' review on Den Of Geek, but it was quite a small one and they left out the detail. I still found it a bit annoying though.

Film & TV / Psychoville Halloween Special
21 October, 2010, 05:48:07 PM
I'm rather looking forward to this.

I actually received an email from the site today (I had signed up for their Newsletter. I'd completely forgotten about it...) and I was directed to this:

Click the cursed video if you dare.

Delightfully freaky innit?
Obviously going for a 'Ringu' homage
. I like it.

Film & TV / The First Men in the Moon (BBC 4)
19 October, 2010, 05:16:57 PM
A new adaptation of H G Wells's classic. (Which I've never read actually... but anyway.)

It's on at 9.30pm and repeats at 12.30 tonight. I thought it was worth a mention.

Looks a lot of fun from the advertisement I've seen. Not that you can really tell from that.

Film & TV / Starhyke DVD
18 November, 2009, 03:39:50 PM
I've been waiting for this for a while. It's finally coming available.

Information here.

It was supposed to have been available around Christmas time last year. Still better late than never, as the cliché people say.

To be honest I haven't watched anything apart form the trailers, which seemed a mixture of cool sci-fi effects* and extreme goofiness. I welcome the former (as long as its an accompaniment to a good story and acting) and I'm a touch worried about the latter. I like the odd bit of silliness, but I hope it doesn't overdo it. To be fair, you can't really tell from a trailer though. They're going to highlight the wacky stuff.

Here's hoping it's better than Hyperdrive anyway.

It looks like they've got a nice set of extras on the DVD. Apart from the fruit-lady-from-Brainiac's bosoms, I mean.

*It was actually filmed a few years back but they weren't able to find a home for it. They took the opportunity to keep the effects up-to-date in the meantime, which is nice.

Prog / Prog 1643: Drive By Demons
04 July, 2009, 02:03:50 PM
Cover:  Genuinely rather freaky! Not in a bad way.

Dredd:  Decent ending to the saga, although a couple of things didn't quite makes sense to me. Mainly the stuff concerning the capsules and the ghosts seemed a bit confused.  Also the very end seemed a bit out of nowhere. I.e. why would the ghosts wait this long? The presence of the girl? Oh, and nice bit of continuity with the change in management!

Twisted Tales:  Ok! I got what happened this time. End bit.... aaaaaah! Sort of.

Cradlegrave:  More wrongness. In a good way.

SInister Dexter: Good! And a sweaty girl!  Interesting outcome with the shooting... although not entirely unpredictable. Still worked though.

Defoe: Kamikaze babies. Just wrong. But in the same way as Cradlegrave. A lot of oddness, but it worked. Very simple story but a lot of nasty fun.

Wow. First time I've bagged this in a while.

Film & TV / Farenheit 451

This has just started. A 1966 film. The name is familar, but I'm sure I haven't seen it before.

Quite intriguing so far. The start wasn't half strange though. A guy speaking the names of the directors and actors at the start. Heh.

Prog / PROG 1625: LAST STAND
28 February, 2009, 12:08:57 PM
Yay. Haven't baggsied the prog thread for a while...

Cover- Not bad. Certainly expressive imagery with all the blood and bullet dents. The title bar is going down the left of the strip this week. Probably to account for the image. Looks okay, although I'm not sure this should become a permanent thing.

Dredd: Things certainly heating up this issue.
That alien/box really turns people into scum-bags.
Good.

Book- ad: New books available! I think a few of these have been advertised for a while haven't they? I've seen the Dante :Beast of Rudinshtein for a while. Nice to see. I doubt I'll be buying any for a while though.

Low-life: Poor old Frank is doubting himself as he is given the job of mentoring his replacement.
Oh and Aimee makes a brief appearance. Wasn't she the saucy chick who was in the Meg recently? (I haven't read it but I've read some reviews on the 2000AD review site.) She looks very different under D'israeli's art.
Some amusing stuff this issue, but sad in a way too. Good. Oh, and interesting last panel.

Marauder:  The corrupt Judges retaliate!
And Falcone acts rather rashly considering he is out of armor so to speak. Looks like he'll be free to rescue his lady love next issue though.
Good. (I don't really get the hate with this strip.)

The 86ers:  This is the second of these that I've been acquainted with. It's another one of those strips everyone seems to dislike, but I like. Looks like Tharg has been taking note of complaints about catching up because there is an entire 'data page' filling us in on the story so far. R
afe investigates bad scientist this issue.
Early days, but so far so good.

Strontium Dog:  The dogs home in on their quarry.
And Moon shows what a nasty piece of work he can be.
Very good stuff.

Overall, a good prog I think. But I've been saying that for weeks now.

Oh, the back cover, and ad for Watchmen!  Seems strange reviewing ads, but it is a very good picture.

Film & TV / The Tripods Exclusive DVD

I used to quite like this. The books were great, and the programme was ok. I never saw the full series until I grabbed it from the library a couple of years back. I didn't realize they never released the second series. Until now, that is.

Film & TV / Lesbian Vampire Killers
10 January, 2009, 01:24:35 AM
I only just heard about this, literally a few minutes ago!

When I looked at the name it reminded me of some kind of trashy B-movie, possibly with porn connotations. And it could well still be that. Then I saw who was in it, and actually I think the film could be a good laugh.

Anyhow, a trailer and synopsis (and not much else at the moment, to be fair) available here.

Film & TV / Demons *Possible Spoilers.*
03 January, 2009, 06:29:09 PM
So, new series on tonight at 7.20.

The blurb 'Teen Luke discovers his destiny as the last descendant of Van Helsing'  looks a bit cliche and, well dodgy. The trailer looked pretty good though.

Oh, and it's got that Philip Glenister in it. I got the impression he was the main character from the trailer. No doubt they're using him to sell the programme though.

Film & TV / Christmas Doctor Who 2008 * SPOILERS *
25 December, 2008, 09:28:38 PM
Arguably the best Christmas Doctor Who in my opinion.

I got an excited geeky thrill with the huge stomping steampunk 'Cyberking' robot at the end. Only thing I wasn't keen on was the usual hero worship stuff that went on... but that was one bit of fluff in a custard of creamy goodness. So to speak.

Great new characters including a delicious villainess.
Silly but interesting variant on the Cyber-folk with the cybershades. (Blokes running around on all fours, looking like just that, despite supposedly being converted animals... yet still working somehow.)
Quick view of old incarnations of the doctor.
And the big stompy robot at the end which I mentioned.
And of course silliness, but in a good way.

Film & TV / Clone
17 November, 2008, 03:44:46 PM
This is on tonight, 8.30 on BBC3. More information on the programme here.

Of course it could be rubbish. Still, I'm glad they're giving more science fiction comedies a chance. And Mark Gatiss is in it.

From the clips I've seen it looks to me to be on a Universal Soldier theme, just, well, silly.

Film & TV / V reboot.
13 October, 2008, 05:40:30 AM
I found this interesting: //http://www.denofgeek.com/television/127645/v_the_lizards_are_returning_finally.html

I rather enjoyed the original mini-series and the following series to a lesser extent. I have mixed feelings about a reboot. I.e. will it continue? Or be a complete reimagining? I tend to favor the former, let the old show stand in continuity as it were, but I've been proven wrong. I prefer the  reimagined Battle Star Galactica for example over the -charming in places if you don't count the dog and little kid thing- original.

Film & TV / Star-Hyke
25 September, 2008, 12:53:49 AM
I know reaction to the first episode screening was pretty negative (I haven't seen it myself, so I can't judge) but I thought some of you might be interested to read this. Particularly in light of the other news we've had lately.
I recently got a list email concerning Starhyke. (I'd forgotten I'd even registered on it.) I won't copy the entire email here, but here is a shortened version of the blurb as on site:

QuoteAfter all the false starts and broken promises, Starhyke is about to be finished and released to the world. Postproduction will be completed at the end of September 2008. In November 2008 we will be arranging a private screening of all six episodes and would like to invite fans who have been waiting patiently for so long to come along and watch the series first.

A posting will be added to the forum shortly, where you can request tickets. Unfortunately, we're only able to screen the series in Bristol UK, so you must be able to get there at your own expense.

There is no mention of a channel. Extra blurb in the email suggests that after the advanced screening it's going straight to DVD.

Apparently there'll be more information on their main site shortly.

Film & TV / NEW RED DWARF
19 September, 2008, 01:16:13 PM

I'm very happy about this. I know from a previous thread about 'shows everyone likes but you don't' that a few here don't like it.

But you're wrong.
;) (Actually there was a decline in quality, particularly in series 8 but I still think there was plenty of good matterial.)

Film & TV / The Thing Prequel
13 September, 2008, 11:33:27 PM
//http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=7717

This could be interesting if it's true. I'd certainly prefer it to a remake as I thought the John Carpenter version (which to be fair is a remake itself, but much better than it's predecessor) was great. I imagine it will cover what happened in the Swedish (or was it Norwegian?) base. The one that discovered the frozen ship. I wonder if lots of American characters get retconned in thought.

Books & Comics / Dark Horse Web Comics

Darkhorse web comics. (You might need a myspace account to access though.)

A nice little find I thought. They've got a Serenity strip up there now. Plenty of others too and all free.

At the bottom you can access past issues. Just move your pointer over the large triangle arrow either side to scroll back and forth.

(Incidentally, apologies if there's already a thread about this site.)

General / Empire's top comic characters.
11 July, 2008, 09:08:03 PM
Here it is.

Judge Dredd scored pretty high at number 7. I'm curious where they got that colour picture of nippley Halo Jones with the big snake at number 18 though. I don't remember the snake from the book at all.

Prog / PROG 1594: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD- SPOILERS
05 July, 2008, 05:35:15 PM
Cover- The perspective gives Defoe a bit of an egg-head look, but I like the dark humour. Atmospheric night scene too, interesting palette.

Dredd-  Good as always. More resolution and
Ramos attempting to do the right thing
.

Defoe-  A slow but enjoyable burn. Quite literally in places (har har.) I'm a bit puzzled as to why they had to destroy the skull and do that gruesome ritual with the link-boy. Destroying the skulls stopped the fire-reeks. I guess the link boy was to start things in motion in the first place? Not sure what the preacher took out of him, an egg, or just some of his innards. (They mentioned an egg, but thought that might just be a metaphor. And there are flying guys now. Vizards. And a female on the team I didn't notice before. Besides Elektra I mean. ;)  She's well disguised in her outfit.  And was that "He's just a hack!" another poke at those who criticize Mill's latest work, or am I being paranoid?   I'm liking this  though.

The Vort- Good continuation. Did they ever explain who that strange looking alien scout was (the one who referred to Crispy as a freak)? Those froggies didn't look particularly young mind, but I think I might have been looking wrong. They, and the landscape, are so alien it's difficult to interpret things sometimes. That's not a criticism of D'Israeli's work though. Weird doesn't mean bad.

Sinister/Dexter-  Great continuation. I had a look back at some old progs and I realize now the Zlick being interviewed by Moses isn't the same as the one they're working for. I kind of missed that first time round, but I think that was the scripts intention so I don't too feel dumb about it. Notice that familiar 'cock up ' line? That's really familiar, but it skips my memory where I heard it. I remember "We're not at home to Mr Cock-up" or something like that.

Dante-  More strangeness. Sexy flying. I liked the little bit at the end. (Not the nudity... well...maybe that a bit... but the... oh you'll see.)
