News / Re: 25 Years of Rebellion
« on: 05 December, 2017, 09:54:02 am »
I wonder what 2000AD will be like in 25 years time in 2042? Will it still be thrill power and how will we be viewing our weekly Prog? Some futurists claim we'll have a direct link to the Internet in our heads by then so maybe it will beam right inside our skulls. Anyway here's to 25 years of Rebellion thrill power and long may it continue.

Spiderman: Homecoming. I thought it was rather good with Tom Holland as Spidey and Michael Keaton excellent as the Cybersuited villain who had made a smart career choice after being laid off by the Spooks squad. It wasn't about saving the World; it had both humanism and humour plus a learning curve for the protagonist. Well worth a watch.

Could there be licensing issues? We doodle away producing our Competition stuff, but Rebellion might be in the middle of some complicated negotiation with a third party interested in acquiring a 2000AD character license for a limited period. Understandably it might be best for those talks if the prospective party concentrates on official artwork produced by professional 2000AD artists and they're not distracted by any 'iffy' visions of 2000AD characters, something that might detract from its commercial saleability. Also, it does take a lot of time to produce the Comp, and there is expenditure for winners, a Graphic Novel, so you can see why the Art Comp might be in for a long hiatus.

Film & TV / Re: Rian Johnson to create all new STAR WARS trilogy

I assume Luke Skywalker dies in The Last Jedi, and Rey carries on as a covert Warrior , but there's still scope for more Jedi, Rebel and even Imperial stories in the SW Universe. Smugglers vs Bounty Hunters is a Space set Western while Imperial agents infiltrating the Rebel Alliance, or vice a versus, gives that thriller style edge to the usual see the enemy, blast 'em! I think one of the books the Hutts found or built a Death Star Cannon and they hoped to use it to blackmail/Destroy planets for profit, greedy Capitalists!

This sexual abuse scandal will probably have a long run since MP's and their staff work long, unsociable hours allowing the more predatory amongst our elected representative's many opportunities to offend. It's only a minority that is responsible for this abhorrent behaviour, but it hardly shows Parliament in a good light. The press will have files on MP's sexual predilections, and I have no doubt the Sunday Papers will be the guillotine for several Political careers over the next months. We can only wait and see which MP's gets caught in the Net and hope that some independent system is set up to deal with the more boorish of our Parliamentarians.

Games / Future Judge Dredd Video Game?

Here's a skit on the belief that Judge Dredd should be a Video Game rather than a TV series.

I think the Shark has it but here's my ditty.

                                                                      Numbers Up.

The world runs on numbers, so Vince McGuffin counted the seconds as the clock outside Fulcrum Publishers Chief Editors office passed 4:55 PM.  He'd pitched his idea despite annoyance from the seniors gathered around the office's dingy table. A Junior Staff Writer like Vince proposing anything was laughable too them, but the Chief said he'd scrutinise it carefully.

'Pre-millennial tension.' Vince recalled himself saying to his sceptical colleagues, 'and the success of this recent Film called 'Star Wars' meant younger readers were primed to accept a new product, my suggested science fiction based comic strip!'

Groans and catcalls engulfed the Editors room at his proposal, but the Chief Editor wanted a 'private discussion' with the Seniors, and so Vince had found himself outside in the dark corridor. The clock's minute hand click on to nearly 5:00 PM. Other Numbers would now decide his project the cold, hard arithmetic of commerce. Even the proposed comics name was a number, and Vince recalled the undisguised contempt amongst the editors after he'd spoken it aloud.

'2000 AD?!' one snorted with derision. 'Load o' cobblers!'

Suffice to say the Junior writer received no financial breakdowns or fancy sales graphs. No, instead the Chief Editor ordered him inside, then thrust a slip of paper into Vince's Hand with a recognisable if damning number printed on it.

'Karl Urban's hero costume from Dredd.' Yes! What did you like the best about the event Sheridan? Any piccys or are they to embarrassing?!

Wonder Woman. Thought it was terrific much better than BvsS and had something rather dark to say about human nature but our better selves do exist within us. Effects were occasionally ropey, but the cast was excellent particularly Ewan Bremner as a  sniper suffering from PTSD. Well worth a watch.

A woman said hello to me. This place is in the South for God's sake where people acknowledging each other's existence is a social faux pau! Does she not know the horror of a stranger issuing a greeting? I intend to write to my MP about this verbal 'Hello' nonsense if I can remember my MP's name.
