Definitely one of the greats who made 2000AD what it was. Sadly missed.

Prog / Re: Prog 2107 - Hostile Takeover!

Dredd:
Bloody Hell! I knew Smiley was into some dark stuff, but this! He is directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of not only half the people of Mega City One but also the entirety of the population of East Meg One and the entire population of an alternative Earth. If the defectors had information on Block Mania and the Apocalypse Warp technology, Mega City One would have been in a better position to defend itself, so much so the Sovs might not even have started the war. Thus the Sovs wouldn't have destroyed half of Mega City One and their retaliation wouldn't have destroyed the alternative reality Earth. Dredd wouldn't have had to take over the Sov nuclear bunker and destroyed East Meg One. All of this stemmed from one incident in Georgia. Instead of sending in a hit squad, why didn't Chief Judge Griffin give the defectors asylum? They could have got the information that way. If the team had been sent to escort the defectors out then Frank would not have had to gun down his team mates.
I know what have I just said could be explained away and maybe some of this scenario will be disproved in later episodes but I am just going with the information I have been given.

Skip Tracer: Was especially good this week. I liked the action and the feeling of the hopelessness as the facility is overrun was well executed. I also liked the turnaround at the end.

Brink: It is clear to most what my views on this story are. I understand and respect others' love for this story but it has never impressed me in storytelling or artwork. It is just my opinon and does not denigrate anyone else's views.

3rillers: Last weeks introduction didn't grab me but after this episode I was more interested. I felt memories of Banzia Battalion while reading it, (obviously before it went off the rails in it's final story). The final page reminded me of the Futurama episode when Fry got worms - talking doesn't work with worms.

Kingdom: It has taken eight episodes to get all these plot elements together, eight episodes to get all the pieces of the chess game into position,
and then someone just nukes the entire chessboard!
This easily is the second best story in the prog this week, just after Dredd. At the moment, these are the two stories I HAVE to read in 2000AD.

The Dredd story was the only real standout in this week's prog. Even Kingdom dropped off a bit with little happening. Skip Tracer continues on. The 3riller didn't grab me and Brink was dull, dull, dull.
This was a masterful episode all round. Frank has at last been shown as a sleeper agent of Smiley and made to do terrible things without his knowledge. The reactions of Dredd's remaining team was superb. Maitland is grief-stricken angry and lashing out at Dredd, Giant is confused, desperate and despairing. But Dredd, his reaction MADE this episode. He never said a word while taking everything in! His face spoke volumes, well done to Flint for conveying this. And then a one sentence reply to Hershey's demands that cut everyone to the quick. I must have spent a couple of minutes just staring at that page, before I could go on. The last page summed up the episode really well. Dredd gets confirmation that it was Frank who killed the clone of the War Marshall, telling Dredd he has lost another ally, another chess piece in his match with Smiley. He now wants to meet up with Smiley, why? What does Dredd have left? He has essentially lost everything. After what he said to Hershey, is he even still a Judge?
The price of this week's prog was worth it just for Dredd.

QuoteI'm also getting worried for Gene and whether he'll get the happy ending he deserves.

Thanks man, I thought I was the only one...

Just got my prog in today.

What can I say about Dredd? We were told nothing was going to be the same again and they have certainly delivered on that promise. To say I was not expecting this week's last panel would be an understatement.

Skip Tracer continues to deliver a good story in a good artstyle.

Brink: Is not good but this opinion is clearly in the minority. Each to their own.

Fiends ends well but knowing what we know about Constanta's fate from the first series, I wonder what role Armand D'Hubert has for the future.

Kingdom: Gene has had a long journey with many different scenarios that could have led to a happy life, but it always gets taken away from him. His original pack, his original mission, living with humans, living with wild aux, living within a community, it never seems to work out. He is always hunted and always must fight and move on. After all that and after all he has lost, is it any wonder he doesn't trust anyone and wants to make his own decisions for his own kind? We must be coming to another reckoning now. There is a definate sense of urgency coming through in this week's episode. A deadline has been declared, something big is coming.

Prog / Prog 2104 - The Watchers in the Walls!

Judge Dredd: Once again Flint knocks it out the park with his great art and action in this episode. This story is continuing to build up into a very suspenseful story. Just when you think you are making progress to working out what is going to happen, THAT happens in the final panel...

Brink: Continues to underwhelm in both artstyle and plot. Definitely not for me, but I still accept it has it fans.

Fiends: There is just something about seeing a vampire ripping a wolf in half with his bare hands that makes you know your reading a quality story!

Skip Tracer: This got really weird, really quickly.

Kingdom: A lot of exposition in this episode. Still stellar artwork.

Prog / Prog 2103 - Demons of the mind
13 October, 2018, 07:24:07 PM
Dredd: Continues apace with great art and a compelling plot. All these possibilities only half hinted at. It looks like the best way to read this story is in its entirety after its conclusion.

Fiends of the Eastern Front: very atmospheric and chilling. The horrific origins of the vamprie, with nods to East European folklore.

Skip Tracer: Difficult for me to follow this story but it is worth the effort for the artwork.

Kingdom: second best story after Dredd this week. So many different factions vying to win in this post apocalysic Earth, most of them out for themselves.

Blink: Not a fan of the story or the art style. They leave me cold but I understand that other readers like this story.

The standout of this week has to be 2000AD's tribute to Carlos Ezquerra. I wish I had the words to express how profound his work has touched me since my earliest days reading 2000AD. His work on Dredd and Strontium Dog has always been sterling. I can only echo the tributes paid in the Nerve Centre, the Obituary and the letters page. But by far, it was without words that the greatest tribute was made. I teared up when I first saw the art by Damian Edwardson. Thanks for that picture. It will remain with me.

Prog / Prog 2095 In the Eyes of the Law
18 August, 2018, 02:13:38 PM
Hello all. Another Saturday and another Prog for me.

Dredd: Plot threads from the past are being used in this return of the Sons of Booth story. In especially the last panel, I took a sharp intake of breath.
Just imagine the possibilities of this organisation with the Stupid Gun in their possession.
The Order get weirder by the episode making it more difficult to follow the overall story. The introduction of good wurms in the last book is being developed more in this book and even Anna Kohl is showing more sympathy for them.

The 3riller builds up to a gruesome end by this episode. It reminds me of Stargate SG-1.

Mechastoheles is starting to grow on me: Demons versus mechademon? What's not to like/

Grey Area: After last week's revelation about Kymn and Bitch, I wonder how long it will be before the ETC team learn of this.

All in all, an enjoyable Prog with Dredd's set up for his new story being my favourite.

Prog / Re: Prog 2091 - Area of attack!
22 July, 2018, 11:07:54 PM
I mostly enjoyed this weeks prog but for a couple of things. The Terror tales' ending made no sense to me. Maybe I'm being a bit dense, but what am I suppose to make of it?
Is Quilli real after all or is the child so believing of her father she is having a psychotic episode?
I also have an issue with this week's Deadworld episode.
Judge Death's father was executed when Sidney was a boy. I am no doctor, but I am sure that death by electrocution would speed up the deterioration of a body. Also, Judge Death never showed any indication of madness when it came to bodies before. Why is he treating the corpse of his father like Norman Bates did his mother? Finally, we have Judge Death reach into the chest of the would be assassin and stop her heart. It is stated that this talent is new to him. Hang on though, just after Sidney was transformed into Judge Death by the Sisters, he went over to the Hall of justice and did that very same thing to the Chief Judge.
That being said, the Dredd is starting off nicely, the Order is weird as always and Grey Area was really sad.

Prog / Prog 2065 - Snow Escape

Dredd: a nice Segway from the previous story to this new one of Dredd in slavery. This story reintroduces a previous character from an older story and brings out some new ones. It will be interesting to see how these new potential plot threads play out. I am especially interested in the red haired character Nuala.

ABC Warriors: I know that the warriors are being set against each other to discredit them and their mission but it is still exciting to see them fight one on one again. Not since the time when Blackblood/Joe Pineapples, Mek-Quake/Mongrol and Hammerstein/Dreadlock have we seen this happen and then it was stopped before it could get really good. Let's see how this plays out.

Brass Sun: I'm still finding this more difficult to get into. Perhaps it's because it was so long since the last instalment.

Savage: This weeks episode has lots of foreshadowing that bridges Savage to the ABC Warriors storyline. Once again the war has been declared a lie, with the established reasons behind it being revealed to be a cover for those really behind it - just like in Bad Company, the V.C.s and pretty much every war story in 2000AD that has been retconned from it's original run. Did we really need to be told that there are more than one way to see a war? We know that the reasons behind wars starting are not black and white.

And speaking of Bad Company...I'm still having trouble that the likes of Thrax and Mad Tommy are alive in this story. I can just about get on board with Flytrap but when I read this I am still wondering if it will be revealed what is happening here. With Bad Company it was presented that Kano and his men were misfits who come together to fight he Krool in their own mad way while the other earther soldiers were more like normal people. But now it seems that no one got out of Ararat without physiological or physical damage. Even on Ararat there were hints that Bad Company were not the only lunatic squads out there - we had the Skull Posse and those poor souls that the Krool had experimented on but in this series it looks like everyone were seriously screwed up.
