Title: Prog 2089 - The Apes of Wrath!
Post by: Richard on 07 July, 2018, 01:21:34 PM
A brilliant cover by Chris Weston. I bet that one attracts some new readers!

The Dredd story concludes, and it's pretty funny.

The Order -- I don't care for this.

Skip Tracer finishes. It's coming back in prog 2100. I hope it gets better.

Deadworld has some spectacular images, as usual. Interesting to see an early version of
Judge Fear.
Best story for me this week is the last episode of Durham Red. Can't explain why without spoiling it, but it should be self-evident. I really like this take on the character and I can't wait for another series of this.

What's going on with the white frames around text?

I noticed it in the last (digital) prog on titles.

With the obvious proviso that all art and appreciation is subjective, Weston is now greater* than Bolland ever was.

* And, in terms of pages rendered for Tharg, has now overtaken Mr Mamoullian in every respect other than number of covers. Weston still has plenty of time to catch up to Bolland's impressive cover tally, but - with the best will in the world - it seems unlikely Bolland will ever add more than another few pages to the number of strip pages he's blessed us with. First time I read that I missed the word 'prog'.  The thought that we'd have to wait 82 years for the next part was a little disturbing but I was loving the optimism about Tooth's longevity.

[Here's where someone starts the old "Well, what will 2000ad be called in 2100?" debate ..... oops!   :o ]

Oohh I don't know about that, I absolutely adore Weston's art but greater...that's tough

One thing they both have in common is that when you see their b/w inking often it defies belief that a human hand has done such intricate work.

His current work is certainly better than the digital Bolland though, no contest!

I would argue that Chris Weston is possibly one of the best comic artists who ever lived, but I'm not sure I know enough about comic art to actually state that.
For what it's worth, he still has to eclipse Judge Death Lives to take Bolland's crown though.

Cover of the year so far, and this is a year with a McMahon Dredd cover, a classic Ezquerra Johnny Alpha image, and three Langley ABC Warriors (so far).

Cover tag line of the year, although Garth Marenghi and Bugs Bunny went there sooner.

I've just read Dredd so far, and then I've just read it again, and again. "Grud! Ape attack."

One day, Tim Roth will do a tv show where he lists things he doesn't like. It will be called 'The Gripes of Roth', and shall be awesome.
And on that day, I shall point to this very post and claim ownership of the idea, Pat Mills style.

Also, that cover is very, very good.

Thank goodness for this Dredd, Williams/Weston have become a bit of a dream team. Recent progs aren't hitting the mark for me at all so thank Grud for this.

I just came here to say that the art for The Order is amazing, especially the third panel on page 1. Having been reading Nikolai Dante in the ultimate collection, I can't believe I didn't realise sooner that it was John Burns.

I jumped straight to Durham Red, and I love the sequence on page 3. Maybe the ending's a bit contrived -
would she really lose control so easily when she only fed last issue? - although they did make it a point that he didn't last that long
, but when characters have weaknesses like that, l'm a fan of having it actually be inconvenient to them.

None of the others really jump out at me. Skip Tracer was fine, but I hope next time it does a bit more than just
a betrayal
from a character that I don't really know.
It's a bit like being an alcoholic.  The urge is always there and if you give in to it then it tends to run rampant, especially if you are on your own with no-one to help you moderate your response.  If anything, the fact that she fed so recently makes her behaviour in this episode all the more believable.
Not much change from last time really, little ups and downs here and there, but we've had a consistently good Prog for a while now, occasionally flirting with Great.

I thought the ending to Dredd was a little standard and while undoubtly fun seemed a little like Williams and Weston wanted to take a little break from Judge Pin to do something a bit different and having a chat to decide what. They (I assume having read my self published comic 'Ape in a Spacesuit' that apes in spacesuits are the coolish thing possible and just built a story from there. Now Williams and Weston having fun with chimps is clearly a very good thing, just lacked anything more...

... more, you want MORE....

...well yes I'm greedy.

and you get more from The Order. Bloomin' love where this strip is going and time for a flashback to flesh things out is fine. As stated elsewhere it looks incredible too.

Skip Tracer could have been more but it needs to make me care. About the protangist, the situation and preferable both. Alas here its neither. Still we'll see what happens next time.

Deadworld continues to be superb. But it Durham Red that steals the show with a fantastic final episode, closing down this story while opening up both a desire and potential for more... so once again...

More please.

Yes it is all subjective, and Weston' art is great, but for me Bolland is number 1.

For one, Bolland's figures are more dynamic than Weston's.

Also, when I think about the artists I like the most, it is also about context. Specifically which stories a given artist has drawn and how much impact they have had on me. In that regard Bolland wins hands down over Weston.

Bolland might not have done that many stories, but what he did were absolute classics. For me Chris Weston can't match those, apart from Six and the recent Judge Pin stuff. But compare that to The Cursed Earth, The Day the Law Died, The Judge Child, Judge Death and Judge Death Lives, then it is no contest. Add in stuff like Face Change Crimes, The Forever Crimes, Block War and the last episode of Block Mania, and basically I'm fighting with Bolland Block.

Oh and I would put Killing Time fairly high on my list of least favourite 2000AD stories.  (Sorry...)

I certainly think it's fair to say that Weston is a better Dredd artist than Bolland, when considering the strip as a whole. Bolland unquestionably gave us many definitive, iconic images of Dredd himself, but his version of MC-1 largely failed to convince. I'd argue that he never really gave us a version of the city that felt like the 'real' MC-1 until Block Mania, when he was picking up the baton from McMahon, Dillon and Smith*. The rest of the time, his city felt, to quote D'israeli, like 'the future sprayed silver with fins stuck on'.

*It's also fair to note that Smith's MC-1 suffered from the same problem, but was redeemed, in part at least, by his love of packing crowd scenes with crazy citizens.

Bolland vs Weston. This for me is like choosing between your two favourite dishes. When Weston started in the business I did not really appreciated his work this his changed the last few years. Bolland in contrast for me was great from the word go. I like the detail of Weston's current work and for the reason I will choose him. Bolland was for long the Dredd artist.

For this kind of fine, detailed work on Dredd I'd probably put Bolland just ahead of Weston (For the Eagle covers as much as anything) but I'd actually put Cliff Robinson ahead of either of them (not in terms of strip-work, but for me he's number 1 for Dredd covers).

Can't fault the apes. Brilliant.

Durham Red ends on a bang. I hope this returns soon.

I was going to say that I'd lost track of what is going in in The Order, but I don't think I ever had a grasp of it in the first place. Can anyone give me a simple summary because, at the moment, I'm just looking at the pretty pictures?

Officially-not-as-good-as-Bolland hack artist, Chris Weston, makes a bold bid to put Pete Wells out of business by sharing his roughs[1] and colour prelims directly with you, the discerning Sister Wendys of fandom.

Over to you, Chris [2] ...

STEP ONE: First, I create a pencil rough that's so insanely detailed it's basically the finished article. I mean, the draughtsmanship's so precise and the modelling so fine that most artists would hand that in along with an invoice demanding payment, but I've got a lot of free time on my hands and I enjoy discouraging aspiring artists by passive-aggressively setting the bar so high everyone else feels like a fraud:

https://i.imgur.com/pHcqZCp.png

STEP TWO: Due to my enormous inheritance from the Smith & Weston arms manufacturer my great-grandfather founded with John Smith's aunty, I no longer need to work to support myself, but I decide to really eat up the billable hours anyway, laying down different colour swatches - like when your mum was getting a new carpet and brought home the sample book with removable pages made of textiles. Again, it's basically finished already, but I'm killing time between the tennis finishing and the next world cup game:

https://i.imgur.com/yFF2EkN.png

STEP THREE: I'll be honest; I'm just showing off now. I run the entire thing through a computer programme called CHEATR, which makes everything look like an eighteenth-century Italian engraving. This takes even more time, but me and Glenn Fabry are engaged in a competition to see how many individual lines you can include on a page before it uses up all the free memory in 2000ad's server farm and crashes their system:

https://i.imgur.com/GEtWUVu.png

STEP FOUR: The gang of Filipino orphans I bought from Geoff Darrow and keep locked in the cellar set to work applying colour as per my instructions. I superimpose a grid over the image that breaks it down into a thousand tiny squares, so the children can work on each section individually, using their wee fingers to carefully layer graded areas of colour using iPad Pros with internet access disabled, so they can't message the outside world for help:

https://i.imgur.com/1eLQ1Uz.png

[1] Barely legible childish scrawls, really

[2] Chris Weston did not write any of the following. Not one word.

Good solid prog with a cover that you can literally go ape for.

Dredd – Weston's art is as always, the highlight in any prog and he delivers a nice Dredd tale.

Skip Tracer – I enjoyed this and look forward to the return in prog 2100. Hopefully we can see some more character development.

Durham Red – like this and I liked the new Durham. Hopefully this will return soon. In the art department I prefer Willsher's art. Carter is a good artist but in this case,  it felt a little bit rushed (yes I do understand he had to take over in a short period of time and had a short turnaround time to deliver)

The Order – this is just great from art to script.

Deadworld – continues to deliver

Another great prog. Killer cover by Chris Weston. Shame the monkey isn't actually on Dredd's back, as the caption claims. The episode itself concludes the story in riotous fashion, bit rushed in places but that just adds to the sense of chaos. Still not quite sure where the elevator was actually headed, though..?

The Order is as glorious as ever, John Burns' art endowing it with a timeless quality. Rick Random concludes with a strange and underwhelming installment - with it coming back so soon it's going to be running at the same time as the new series of Brink, isn't it? Hmm. Deadworld spoils us with glimpses of three of the Dark Judges, and Durham Red wraps with a brutal denouement. Tharg, please say Durham Red is coming back real soon, it really needs a run of a few consecutive stories.

And as if all that wasn't enough, stand by for more Grey Area. It's coming home!

Cover - hurrah

Dredd - hurrah x2 (and how better when the humour is in the mouths of chimps and cits not judges)

The Order - delayed hurrah (no doubt)

Skip Tracer - half hurrah - very disappointing deus ex machina conclusion. Paul Marshall's art and the pace of this gives it a lot of good will but there isn't (yet) a character to be interested in. Up for more but the script droid needs to find a way to develop Skip himself - be that personality, dialogue, humour, back story, supporting cast or whatever.

Deadworld - good-will hurrah - stupidity of plot (crashing into the halls of justice) reaches the characters weeks after the reader. Byke's departure a tad random etc.. but still a very likeable strip.

Dullard Red - no hurrahs. A deeply boring reboot with Wagner's Red defenestrated and a laughable 70s cinema  'oh the horror, the blood, the horror' flailing thrown on top of generic-feisty-independent-tough-lady trope. Her character is dull, her outfit is dull, the settings were dull, the final confrontation dull, the inner monologue dull, the whole thing.. dull.

Fantastic cover and great Weston art on Dredd, although the story winds up in pretty unremarkable fashion.
Skip Tracer ends without leaving much trace on my memory - nothing horrible about it, just a little tired and clichéd. The Order is tremendous - okay, it's got a few brain-testing time-travel conundrums, but it's really no more complicated than a good episode of Dr Who, and it's so good to see Burns back in the prog. I'm running out of superlatives for Damned - this whole Deadworld trilogy has been for me, the highlight of the prog over the last couple of years. I really want to like Durham Red, and I appreciate the darker tone to the character, but for some reason it's not really hitting the spot just yet - still, a character like her is like a comfy pair of shoes, always welcome.

Deadworld stands tall over everything else in the Prog and has done for a long time! Art and Storywise, I can't fault it.

Dredd Fantastic artwork.

Skip Tracer didn't do much for me and is less memorable than the strip that had 'Carcer' in, which I enjoyed more but can't remember the name of.

The Order another great series, can find no fault at all.

Durham Red was ok but I've never been a massive fan of the character.

Cheers

Yep, Deadworld outstanding thrill for me. Top stuff.

A fun, undemanding Dredd.

Can't really get into the Order but it's proper bonkers so I'll go along with it.

Red seemed to lose her way after an excellent start but I'll be happy to see more of this new version.

Skip Tracer, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. A complete vacuum of a character with dull world building and weak, uninteresting story. It's coming back but I wonder why.

I didn't have a problem with Durham Red going AK-47 and absolutely, positively killing every motherfucker in the room[1].

Her feeling the need, the need to feed, had been Chekov Gunning it throughout the story and Worley's using her blood frenzy like The Hulk, with Banner-Red a helpless back-seat passenger watching Hulk-Red swerving a transit van through bystanders like ISIS - so her motivations and moral character don't really come into it[2].

It wasn't an especially satisfying narrative conclusion, though.

Plus, by my count, this is the third time readers have been told to get excited because the Doghouse is reopening. Red's text alert doesn't make sense if Worley Red's bringing Hogan Dogs back into canon[3] (where the Agency was already back in business (https://i.imgur.com/35AjjeZ.jpg)) [4] or if this is the reopening of the Doghouse we've only just seen in the previous Wagner Dog story (The Son (https://i.imgur.com/PHI98Kj.jpg)). [5]

[1] (accept no substitutes)

[2] WORLEY: 'the angle I wanted to bring to bear here was, I dunno what you'd call it: 'vampire ethics'? Kim Newman once made a point about vampire fiction often taking pains to avoid the very tension that makes these characters so appealing in the first place: the fact that they must murder people in order to survive. Durham is essentially half-gunslinger, half-serial killer! I've done away with all the usual excuses. Can she drink from ethically-sourced bloodbags? Nope. Can she feed from animals? No way. But she's a good person, right? Maybe...  https://2000ad.com/post/3527

[3] For want of a better term

[4] WORLEY: 'Continuity-wise, Born Bad is set after 1996's Epicedium (Dan Abnett's first work on Durham Red), which was a single-episode conclusion to the Hogan/Harrison stories and ends with her walking off into the proverbial sunset prior to her eventual cryo-sleep and reawakening a zillion years in the future. Tharg is an authority on the Stronti-verse, and has yet to pick me up on anything, so I must be doing something right.' (ibid)

[5] 'After' being a relative concept. Wagner Dog takes place 'after Abnett Red took a pill and went Sleeping Beauty, after all. In a universe where time travel's commonplace, Tharg probably wouldn't mind doing the quick narrative tidying up necessary to bring Red out of future exile and back into play in the main Wagner Dog storyline - although Carlos's Tijuana Bible (https://i.imgur.com/gL6UeZt.png) take on the character might mean he's unlikely to be trusted with one of the Strong Female Jewels in Tharg's Social Justice League again.

I believe it is the latest reopening as per "The Son" (still wish the Stronts had commandeered the hive of scum and villainy from the previous story though!)

Red was decent enough, though lost something as it went - I'm not going to pile on Lee Carter, because I think he did a grand job of having to jump  in there - I felt it went a tad off more due to some odd story beats - when did Red gain superspeed - what was she trying to prove again?

Is it set after Red went into cryo, though? She was part of the Stront army who answered Johnny's call to arms in Prog 1821 (albeit in a non-speaking cameo) and although Worley's series has made no mention of her part in the Second Mutant War, it hasn't contradicted that appearance either.

Also, don't forget that Red was scheduled to run before the recent Stront - so this should have been the first mention of the Doghouse opening, followed by our actually seeing Johnny and Kenton there next week. Not really Worley's fault that this didn't happen that way.

[5] 'After' being a relative concept. Wagner Dog takes place 'after Abnett Red took a pill and went Sleeping Beauty, after all. I can't locate her in that specific episode, but I'm sure you're right that she cameos somewhere in that epic. The final pre-Rip-Van-Winkle episode of Abnett Red says she wasn't seen again for 'a long time', which, I suppose, means Tharg could stick her back into Wagner Dog* without necessarily invalidating the rest of Abnett Red.

Can't see that happening until the gentlemen from Greenock and Zaragoza leave the field, though.

* By which I mean the main Strontium Dog continuity, irrespective of who ends up in charge of that

I think that's over-complicating it. Easier to say she just hasn't gone into suspended animation yet.

That is what I said, buddy. It just took me around forty more words than you and Jimbo, so saying I over-complicated it is a fair point.
