Title: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: Trent on 11 November, 2016, 12:31:19 PM
Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions

Per a suggestion on the main thread by Robert Ellis we can use this thread to list stories we would like to see included in any extension to the Mega Collection. Obviously any suggestions at this stage may still be included in the main run as not all volumes have been revealed but it is safe to say we know 80% of what will be in there.

I'll echo the already mentioned Graveyard Shift, Otto Sump, UnAmerican Graffiti and Kenny Who? Others I'd like to see:

Bob & Carol & Ted & Ringo
The Stupid Gun
The Executioner
Crazy Barry, Little Mo & Banana City
Twister

May add some more later.

To kick off:

Dreddverse:
Pan African Judges
Rest of  Chopper (inc Unamerican Graffitti)
Street of Dan Francisco
Marauder
Tempest
LAWLESS
ANGELIC
Any missing Missionary Man (heh)
Later Anderson

Dredd:
Graveyard Shift
Kenny Who?
Otto Sump
Dead Ringer
Bury my Knee at Wounded Heart
Death of a Legend
Judge Manners stories (Rogue Judges volume - also Falucci Tapes, Crazy Barry etc)
Judge Edgar stories from Statue of Judgement (extended version of the Blind Justice trade)
Dead Zone
Terror Rising
Every Empire Falls arc including earlier Joyce tales
Enceladus/Titan stories (might be some more by the time published)
Early McMahon Dredd annual stories
Return of Rico (has to be there for many reasons)
Vienna stories
Any Bolland, McMahon, Smith or Kennedy Dredds pre 500.
Alone in a Crowd
Beyond the Wall
Crime Files arc
The Marshall (love the art)
The Exterminator (controversial)
Apocalypse War fallout stories
Day of Chaos fallout stories
Sector House (Brothers of the Blood etc - likely in main run)
Chief Judges Man (expect this in the main run)
Snakebite
Cincinnati
Served Cold arc
End of PJ

That should do for a start, a good 20 plus volumes just there.
Love to see other thoughts or rebuttals of my suggestions. Not all are great stories per se but to my mind everything has something to commend it, if only the art in some cases and stories like Dan Francisco and Marauder add to the rounding of the Dredd universe.

I would be shocked if all of mm isn't in the collection since almost all the 2000ad run alones in one book

With over 400 pages still to print and given the last volume included 13 Dredd episodes I think a large chunk of the Meg one-offs might miss the cut in the first round. To be honest, as long as we get the Quitely run, the first half of the Undertaker arc and The Promised Land I will be happy but always glad to see more of Preacher Cain.

Some linking stories have already appeared that set the groundwork for later stories - Bloodlines etc. I'd like to see more of these, particularly Pirates of the Black Atlantic and the Question/Error of Judgement trilogy.

Is there a complete list of what has been printed? I have to confess to now being at the point of not remembering it all... I honestly thought we'd had Wildlands before it turned up this week....

An Xmas Dredd compilation
Insurrection.
The Fear That Made Milwalkee Famous.

FTMMF is in the Horror Stories issue
Like the idea of a Christmas stories volume - A Merry Tale of the Christmas Angel would be a great inclusion.

There was the Meg floppy of Season's Beatings fairly early after they started. One of the few floppies I kept - a full volume would be a good addition.

There was one b&w Inaba story that's in my Shimura trade that wasn't collected in the 2 hardbacks. I wonder what a 9 page hardcover would look like.

I don't they should extend it. There has been so much filler already. I've probably ended up selling half the ones I've bought.

I don't try to find out what is in upcoming volumes but the last 4-6 issues I've received have been pretty poor. The Luna 1 issue was just about bearable because of the cover and the inclusion of some of the Bolland strips. I would have preferred they just reprinted the whole of the Luna 1 saga from the early issues.

I think they maybe should have focussed more on the lengthy stories (like Cursed Earth, DTLD, Judge Child, The Pit) and then had other issues which mainly have the same creative team (like one with art mainly by Ron Smith, Henry Flint, Steve Dillon etc). The stories in some of the collections just seem unrelated to each other because of different creative teams or art styles.

I agree, keep it at 80 books.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: Trent on 07 December, 2016, 07:25:26 PM
Don't say that out loud, they might hear you.
Personally, I'll take as many as they can produce and accept that you will get some duff volumes among the gems.
There is so much classic Dredd that won't make the 80 volumes that I would happily see some dross in order to get these, ideally with colour centrespreads.
Don't understand why anyone would want to stop at 80, you can just buy the ones you do like, unless you are an obsessive completist (presumably like most on this board).
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 07 December, 2016, 07:34:35 PM
It's quite simple really. If you want all the Dredd stories then buy the Case Files, The IDW stuff, The Daily Star Dredd's, the CD's, The novels, the e-novellas etc...

This run was for 80 books and it should stay at 80 books.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: Trent on 07 December, 2016, 08:39:52 PM
The IDW stuff doesn't count surely (with the odd exception).
Case Files are great but I love the themed nature of these volumes, and better paper and colour centrespreads for some of the early stories.
Don't understand the 'they said 80 so leave it at that' logic. The 80 volumes is purely arbitrary, if they had announced 100 to start then presumably you would want 100 volumes.
Other than potential issues with the spine I genuinely fail to see a problem or why anyone would want LESS of Dredd given how fortunate we are to have the collection in the first place in a world dominated by Marvel, DC, Star Wars etc.

These things almost never stop either, unless sales dry up or content doesn't exist. The Marvel one's still going, well beyond its original 60-book run.

I'm not really fussed either way. I suspect the series couldn't cope with too many extra books, but if we got another 20 or so that were filled with great stories, I'm not going to complain.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: Tony Angelino on 07 December, 2016, 10:04:16 PM
Marvel have a lot more history and output to draw on than JD does. There has many more pages of Marvel printed over the years than 2000AD.

I think the key thing here is the "great stories". In my opinion too many volumes of Mega Collection have not exactly been filled with great stories. If I got another couple of packages like Inferno or Calhab then I maybe wouldn't stick with the series until the end.

Ultimately the Mega Collection got me back in to 2000AD but I think they should stop at 80 and then have a rethink on the type of the stories they should be reprinting in such a series.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 07 December, 2016, 11:06:56 PM
It's not less of Dredd when it's reprint. If it was a series of 80 books expanded to 100 of new material, that's different.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: Trent on 07 December, 2016, 11:29:37 PM
Well we're obviously talking about reprint but reprint in nice themed hardback editions is still new Dredd product as far as I'm concerned.

Stick at 80, then bring out a "2000AD Zarjaz Collection," with the best 2000AD/Megazine stories reprinted in thematic chunks.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: IndigoPrime on 19 January, 2017, 01:34:17 PM
I doubt 2000 AD has the pulling power of Dredd, in order to make viable a subscription-based thematic collection. There are also stories that simply wouldn't work if you took a chunk out of them, such as Nikolai Dante. And given the nature of the Dredd collection, which is mostly good but partly awful, I'd baulk at paying a tenner for some utter tosh dredged up from the bowels of 2000 AD – or, for that matter, a dozen Sin/Dex books.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: Trent on 19 January, 2017, 01:54:11 PM
Have to say that I would see a 2000AD based set of books as a new series rather than an extension.

I just think there is fairly obvious Dredd material likely not to be included in the series that could easily fill another 10 to 20 books with decent strips such as Enceladus, Every Empire Falls, Serial Serial, Ladykiller, Dark Justice, The Cop, Dead Zone, Block Judge etc along with the likes of Lawless, Angelic, later Anderson to name but a few.

Bear in mind that the series has another year to run so there is as yet unpublished material they could theoretically mine.

Probably, the view of Rebellion on the financial options of Hachette vs their own trades would have to come into it.

I was thinking more along the lines of an anthology series; find themes and include several stories in each volume. There needn't be whole volumes of just Sinister Dexter, ABC Warriors, Rogue Trooper and all that but themed volumes containing stories from each series - including Judge Dredd (that could be the bridge from one collection to another).

2000AD is an anthology comic so the "Zarjaz Collection" should reflect this. Some series are short enough to be included in their entirety, possibly split up over several volumes, and some long enough to be presented as "samplers." As with the Mega Collection, it would be a representative sample and not a completist project - that's what the Case Files, etc., are for. Pretty sure we could get 50 to 100 volumes out of 40 years' worth of material - especially now rights to other classic properties are coming available so that Twoothy needn't be the only fruit.

As I've never read it, I wouldn't mind a collection of the best stuff from 'Lawman of the Future'. I think some of that was supposed to be pretty good (the Judge Death stuff?) and I'm not sure it's ever been reprinted.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: IndigoPrime on 19 January, 2017, 04:59:23 PM
I've only read that comic through once, and would say it's unfairly derided. It's a distinctly different take on Dredd, but it's not bad per se. That said, I'm not sure it's something anyone would want cropping up in these Dredd volumes – and certainly not heavily. Still, as an extension book, alternate Dreddworld strips could be interesting (bringing in Dredd movie tie-ins, the Alternity stuff, and so on).

I'd like to see a collection comprising all the interviews with artists and writers that appeared in the Megazine, plus the articles.

How about a collection featuring all the stories from the kids spin off comic from the film, was it called Lawman of the Future?

Maybe a themed collection of stories in book form?

Example, one I wouldn't mind is a "War Stories", with something like Rogue Trooper/86ers and the VC's.

I think there is scope for other collections. Although not in the mega collection please. It's already pretty light in some places. As has been said there are many other ways of getting the weaker stories already. Thing is I'm buying the megacollection to completion but not buying any of the normal releases because I can't afford both!

I would also prefer a 2000 AD series instead.

Re keeping the set at 80 - why?
Discussions have thrown up at least a dozen or so potential volumes with key stories as well as some of the more recently published material (Anderson, Lawless, Angelic, Deadworld etc).
I would love these stories to be included and still see any general 2000AD books as a separate series, not an extension.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: COMMANDO FORCES on 04 February, 2017, 07:33:10 PM
Why not just put in every Dredd story that has ever been written then. The company said it was an 80 book set, so apart from greed, why go on past that. Do a 2000 AD one afterwards if they want, no problem at all with that.
You mention recent stuff Anderson, Lawless, Angelic, Deadworld, that's a bit too soon and I would suspect stepping on trades of those that will be coming out in the near future.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions

Yeah, it makes no sense to collect stuff through a third-party company that will sell for less than Rebellion could directly sell.
Title: Re: Judge Dredd Mega Collection extension suggestions
Post by: Trent on 04 February, 2017, 10:05:01 PM
Those stories probably are too soon even if the collection still has pretty much another year to run.
Never said that everything should be included but I do bemoan the lack of certain stories especially at the expense of some of the dross published.
I just think, even a short extension could address this issue to create a truly 'Mega' collection.

Would'v be cool if they collected Michael Carroll's post DoC stuff plus Every empire falls as 2 books. First book concentrating on the Sovs in MC2 and influx of new judges and some of the main story, second one being the rest and ending with the re-skin story.

Also a "Dark Justice" book with the title story in between the Wagner post DoC stories, Beeny's 2 (when they clean house, and her getting appointed) and and those up to Lady Killer. Stories with Dredd starting to screw up a bit now and then, making another push for reformation and then ending with him saying "This case is closed.".

So I know with all the excitement of the 2000ad Ultimate collection the extension of the MegaCollection seems a bit old hat. Do we think the extension will favour Dredd-world (more Anderson - she doesn't feature on the 2000ad spine) or more of the main strip? I can't really justify buying both series so I'm hoping we get some more great stuff here. I'd really like to see Graveyard Shift reprinted as the blueprint for Modern Dredd.

I'm hoping for some modern Dredd, like Enceladus or Every Empire Falls, with a bit more Dredd-world. The Ultimate collection is likely going to favour pure Dredd rather than connected characters, so the extension is the best place for peripheral series to go, I think.

I agree, I think the Ultimate Collection will feature "Dredd 101" stories that stand up on their own without linking to too much ongoing continuity. The Graveyard Shift is a great standalone story so this could feature in either collection I think.

Since there's the occasional barrel scraper in the Mega-Collection, I vote for a volume of dodgy Dredd spin-offs that purport to be funny [a.k.a. the collected Dreddworld scripts by that dunderheid David Bishop]...

Soul Sisters & The Straitjacket Fits in one mighty tome!

Since I only collect some of these issues, to get stories that don't (or won't) feature in the current lineup of collected series (Case Files, Anderson, etc.), then more Dredd-world means I'll be happier buying them.

I would still love to see a compilation of "FALLEN" Judges. Some of the notable Judges Long Walks, Deaths etc.

How about Issue 90 Just being ART?  The Art of Every Cover but Full colour/ Plus some specials from the artists as exclusives too in Issue 90?

The 2nd tale of the Werewolves & first too as not told yet in the Mega collection?

City of the Damned (think its coming later this year or early next)?

Thanks abelardsnazz for the heads up & cannot wait for those issues to land now even moreso. Did love the Werewolf and CofD stories.
Plus great news possibly getting Long Walk/Rogues.

Now will they cover one of my Fav JIMP stories. Title I forget but the ex Actor who portrays a Judge (Highly trained due to the show being Justice Depth Authroised). That was a Nice 2 or 3 parter story.

Aside from the fact that an awful lot of the covers have already been included in the collection, it would be hard to top "The Art of Judge Dredd".  Love the idea of a gallery edition though.  Perhaps as part of an index volume?  Help readers find the damn stories?  Come on Mr Molcher, it would be dead cheap too!  What's not to like?

Has anyone mentioned an index. They should totally do an index.

I don't get the requests for an index. The excellent Wikipedia page tells you what all the books are, what issue number, what volume number and what the stories are.

Personally I don't see the need for more than that.

I can probably get most of the stories digitally too if I want but thats not the point of the collection

Some of us are hard core luddites.  You can't beat the feel of a solid, well prepared book.  Plus ... Wikipedia ... you know.

Ok fair enough, I can understand wanting a physical index. Not sure it would be long enough to be a book though. More of a pamphlet. ;)

True.  Depends on how you pad it out.  Filling it with material from the Mega History, annuals or specials, not to mention various covers.  Perhaps some analysis of Dredd's influence on popular culture and so forth. Just a thought or two.

There could be a Dredd/Mega City tech manual or worldbook.  Think similiar to the Haynes manuals like the Dan Dare one.

Natch, they should have echoed old comics by allowing you to build up the index by cutting it out of random books and stapling it together yourself.

Why are they so reticent to confirm what books will be in the extension especially as the have confirmed virtually all of the 2000ad collection

Could be to avoid an exodus of subscribers deciding it's a good jump off point?  Or more likely that they're concentrating on pushing the tooth collection to get new subscribers since the Dredd ones are pretty much in the bag.  If so it seems a bit of a misstep since quite a few Dredd ones have said they'd have picked up tooth had it started after Dredd had finished.

Really?  Not completely clear but I thought it was Uncle Ump.  Quite happy to be called on that though.

The dude in the top hat is Darren Dead.

Looks like Darren Dead to me.  Ump was a lot shorter, wasn't he?

EDIT: Bah, Jimbo'd.

issues featuring stories and covers by key Dredd artists would be great - a Cliff Robinson issue is well overdue - 30 years of amazing covers (100 prog covers) and a sprinkling of stand alone strips.

Not sure if these have already been featured, however I'd like to seem more early 80s, stories like Otto Sumps Ugly Clinic and Pirates of the Black Sea..,
Not sure Ron Smith has appeared much if at all, and always loved Bolland, Carlos, McMahon, Kennedy

We've had quite a bit of Ron Smith's work throughout the series.  It's worth remembering how prolific he was back in the day.  He had parts in Block Mania, Day the Law Died, Judge Child Quest, Father Earth, Satanus, City of the Damned, .... not to mention countless one offs.

I would agree though that Black Sea needs an outing as a formative part of the East Meg One conflict narrative.  The Bob Oppenheimer reclamation gag kind of loses it's impact without it.

Great to see so much craziness collected in Tales of Ordinary Madness. What's the predictions on the last 9 books. I'm guessing Anderson, Lawless, Robot Wars, Kenny Who, Otto Sump, Death of PJ, Block Judge, Enceladus, Every Empire Falls. I'd love to see a Hershey Volume.

I'm pretty sure it was announced that the Mega Rackets series were part of the extension, to be included in a street crime volume.

Otto Sump needs to appear as he's on the spine image!

I'm surprised Max Normal isn't on the spine - is he relegated to forgotten Dredd sidekick?
