For me the knowledge that everyone in Deadworld is doomed is something that I like about this story. I don't want them to have a miraculous escape. The certain knowledge that there's no hope enhances the story for me. And we still don't know exactly how they'll go out.

QuoteIf you're new to these strips and haven't delved in yet, avoid  the intro and text article  alike, unless you want spoilers up the wazoo.

I've never understood why people put spoilers in introductions without spoiler warnings. Is it because they assume the only people buying it are fans who have already read the stories before? That seems like a pretty silly assumption. Or is it because they aren't familiar with the story and don't read comics themselves, and so they assume that any story in a comic must be so poorly written that it can't possibly have any interesting moments or unpredictable plot twists so there's nothing to spoil? In which case why are they working in that field?

I used to have a Titan Books collection of "The Complete Judge Child Quest" which had an intro that gave away the twist ending
that Dredd leaves the child behind on Xanadu
. Fortunately I had already read the story before, but I was still furious on behalf of all the other purchasers of that volume who would not have read it before and who would now never experience the shock of that great ending.

Basically, never, ever, ever, read any kind of introduction to a graphic novel unless and until you've read the whole story.

Yes, it's the whole run of The Doomsday Scenario, which is brilliant.

QuoteLooks like it's the Christmas issue to me, not the new year one.

You're right, I'd forgotten the line at the top. I always think of them as new year progs because of the way they used to be numbered.

General / Re: 2000AD Cover of the year Vote 2017
09 December, 2017, 02:54:00 PM
My votes:

1. 2045 - Apocalypse Then! A colourful cover by the talented Cliff Robinson, it's eye-catching because it has a nuclear explosion, and it has all nine members of the Apocalypse Squad (including the one who wasn't in that story). A nice homage to a popular classic.

2. 2024 - Meet Harvey! A strong image of Dredd. Partly I chose this one because I still remember the excitement and anticipation of a new Mechanismo story, but also the way Jim Baikie has drawn it is striking.

3. 2044 - The Magic is Back. I just like the composition of this one: the main image is in fact the cover of an old 1940s pulp magazine, surrounded by other noir detective stuff (whiskey, gun, rotary phone etc).

It was hard to narrow it down to three though. I also liked 2029 (Fear Me), 2019 (Dredd by Greg Staples - would have voted for it but didn't want three Dredd covers), 2013 (another Hope cover, the one with the nun in a gas mask), and Ezquerra's cover for the 40th anniversary special. It's been a good year.

Quotedoesn't seem right to vote for a prog I haven't actually received yet.
We're voting g for covers, not progs, so if you've seen it you can vote for it.

Prog / Prog 2061 - Happy New Year, Bitches!

Actually, that's not the real cover strapline, I just wish it was. It's really "LEADING THE THRILL-CHARGE!"

It's a good prog.

Judge Dredd carries on from where we left off last week. Don't want to say too much more about it here so as not to spoil anything, but it's taken an interesting turn. It's part one of a series.

There's a very good Fall of Deadworld one-off which introduces a new character, of whom I am looking forward to seeing more in later stories. There's also an advert for the first volume of Dark Judges hardback graphic novels, starting with Fall of Deadworld.

ABC Warriors gets off to an excellent start. Even if you didn't like the last series, give this one a go. Clint's art is beautiful, and Pat's writing is top stuff, and he makes his point well without being too preachy about it. I'm glad this is back.

There is a very funny Tharg-type one-off story about Starlord, by a new writer and some great art by Henry Flint. This made me laugh. (I wonder if Rebellion's Treasury of British Comics imprint will reprint anything from Starlord in its 40th anniversary year? Mind Wars was good.)

I've got to make this comic last for three weeks, so in saving the other four stories for later (I hope that's not cheating for thread-bagging purposes). But there's also Droid Life, a feature where creator droids choose their favourite bit of the prog over the last 40 years, and adverts for new Strontium Dog and Chopper stories in 2018.

The rest of the prog is Savage, Brass Sun, Bad Company and an Ace Trucking Co one-off.

A very good way to round off the year.

Even if they did it on purpose, it was still an error. To leave out such a big chunk of story so that what is left doesn't make any sense was a mad thing to do.

The number of graphic novels Rebellion puts out each year is phenomenal. We never had that in the '90s. It's hard to imagine any other company putting out the Complete Case Files for 30+ volumes. And 2000AD wouldn't still be around if it wasn't for them. I'm delighted with them.

My only gripe is that if Rebellion is still publishing 2000AD when I die, then my complete collection of progs will become incomplete almost immediately.
