wow 500 words is a lot less to work with then I thought it would be! I could only manage 566, posting any way but it does break the rules... and it's not funny.

FRIDAY

THE PROMISE

He made them a promise; he said he would save them. The people of Freetown had been good to him; they had shared their homes and their food with him, they had treated him like an equal. The small refugee townships hidden in the slopes and plains of this vast mountain range was Friday's first sight of what life could be like without war. But Freetown was not unaffected by war; the Karvau had built a church there a month ago, and already the religious war waged across the galaxy threatened to tear apart this quiet place.

Preacher Corgan had come to prepare the way; his sermons warned that when the Karvau came, the young would be taken to do God's work and only the faithful would be saved. Freetown had not welcomed him but with the might of the Karvau army at his back there was little they could do to stop him.

Friday had been given a room at the Macmillans' home, although he never seemed to sleep. He repaired farm equipment in the daytime and stood watch at night. He ate with the family, Ed and Milly and their two daughters Sarah and Kate, but he rarely spoke. He listened while they talked about preacher Corgan and what would happen to Sarah and Kate when the Karvau came.

That night, instead of standing watch, Friday went to church.

'You are not welcome here!' spat Corgan.

'I was about to say the same to you. Leave and tell the Karvau there is nothing for them here, or I promise I will cause you and your ridiculous religion trouble like you have never seen.'

Corgan stared though Friday as if he were just a shadow. 'Hell is coming. The heathens shall burn and only the repentant will be saved. There is no hope of redemption for you, clone. The fire is here and you have no soul to cleanse.'

'I'll be back for you, preacher.'

Corgan stared into Friday's cold, blank eyes and felt his soul shiver. After a moment, Friday left Freetown and walked into the night.

Friday didn't come back the next morning or the next week. Milly Macmillan had asked Friday what he would do when the Karvau came; she assumed that now she had her answer. Preacher Corgan however could not rest easy. The army should have been there by now and he had lost all contact with the 53rd divine regiment of the true god. The preacher would have to bring down the cleansing fire himself. He opened communication with the orbiting fleet.

'Preacher Corgen to Sword of Vengeance.'

'Go ahead Preacher.'

'Have lost contact with the 53rd, presumed destroyed by the heathen. Unleash the wrath of God.'

'Understood, Preacher. God be with you.'

The Sky screamed and death rained down from orbit, the mountains caught fire for hundreds of miles and the ground burnt to glass. Friday watched from amongst the bodies of the 53rd as the beam streaked from the sky laying waste to everything it touched. He imagined he could hear Ed and Milly and Sarah and Kate as they boiled and burnt to ash. He watched still as the red sunset melted into the fiery mountain range. He made them a promise, he said he would save them and he didn't. He made Corgan and the Karvau a promise too and he intended to keep it.

There is a touch of Jesus Redondo about the legs, it's good that the image is bringing to mind a fist full of classic artist.

I was reading the 1993 (I think) Judge Dredd yearbook last night and the lead colour Dredd Strip got me thinking. It was competently illustrated and the colouring was fairly nice but it was drawing in colour posing as being fully painted.  I think the fully painted work from the 90's has a probably slightly undeserved bad reputation. Sure there was a lot of bad stuff and Bisley want to be artist were 2 a penny but there was also a lot of rich, detailed, vibrant and wonderful looking artwork. The problem as I see it is that because when you are presented with fully painted artwork it raises your expectations, it promises something special.  A lot of the artist produced good or proficient if uninspired work, some produced exceptionally good work and some appeared to be completely out of their depth.

I thought as I had just compiled a top 10 Dredd artist list why not compile a top 10 painted strip artist list.

I thought you guys would probably be interested to see this, I layed off mentioning it until I got the ok from Tharg. But since he say's it's fine to say something, the new Gerry Finlay Day strip will be appearing in prog 2011, the 100pp Christmas issue, on sale 15 December 2010, & it's been drawn by yours truely.

I'll be posting an entry on my blog showing the process from script to finished art on a couple of the pages, but for now here's an action shot of ol' Rogue from the strip.

If Cam Kennedy and Jose Ortiz had a love child this is what it would look like! Really good stuff! But I would expect nothing less from you Staz.

Ormston? Really?

I like his weird colour schemes and I like that his artwork was about as chunky as you could get yet still told the story on the page. It looked like he pained all his pages with a house brush but somehow got in all the detail he needed.  For me he stood out amongst the 90's painted strip artist as being a bit different and a quite interesting after he settled in to his style.

Hard to decide on just 10. Perhaps it's just because I'm at work but I find myself tempted to make a results spread sheet.

I remember going back to 'Joovz 'n' the Hood' several times as a young reader for the artwork (it's a nice little story in all respects but I was very interested in he art) good compositions and page lay outs an excellent sense of movement and deceptively complicated open line work. The colour didn't work as well but it's got it's nice moments. It has a touch of the Brendan McCarthy and a little Brett Ewins about it. I'm not all that surprised to find out it's Edmund Bagwell's work.

Thanks Darren,

Brillant entery BTW, love the old school feel.

Thanks Kev, Darren, Supersurfer and Chris, I knew if I was going to post on the forum I would have to bring my A game. :)

Holiday snaps Rouge was hoping woulden't make it to the Nu Internet!

#764
I tried to make Nu earth look sickly and otherworldly. I always think of rouge as black and white so adding the colour was the hardest part. Now for the comedy tag line and then it's ready to post in the competition.

Thank you all very much, I've just started looking around the board and the standard of art is extremely high.
