Title: Tutorials and Tips Megathread
Post by: VinceBot on 26 July, 2009, 07:22:28 PM
Got a specific tutorial people might find usful? Post it in this thread!

Periodically we'll come through here and cull the posts, compile the links and delete the flak.

If you've got an entire text tutorial you want to actually post, you might do better to post it to its own thread, then post a link to that thread in here.

First off, VinceBot, thanks for opening this subsection of the forum - I'm very happy it's here!

Here are a few starting points for things that I've found informative or useful.

Matt Brooker, better known to most as D'Israeli has from time to time put tutorials, work in progress and some analysis of comic art and artists on his website and blog... I have included a few links to some pretty cool things that IMO, everyone wanting to get work should have at least scrolled through.

This very quick video (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2007/08/video-try-out.html) will tell you about getting started with colour in photoshop.

Searching his blog with the word process (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/search?q=process) for example, should prove most enlightening.

I'd advise a read through of his Low Life: Creation series too.
part 1 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/02/lowlife-creation-part-one-borrowed.html), part 2 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/02/lowlife-creation-part-two-old-dogs-new.html), part 3 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/03/lowlife-creation-part-three-so-was-that.html), part 4 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/03/lowlife-creation-part-four-this-week-i.html), part 5 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/04/lowlife-creation-part-five-all-joy-i.html), part 6 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/04/lowlife-creation-part-six-theyll-need.html), part 7 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/04/lowlife-creation-part-seven-work-life.html) and finally, part 8 (http://disraeli-demon.blogspot.com/2009/04/lowlife-creation-part-eight-cover-its.html).

Where Mr. D'Israeli's website http://www.disraeli-demon.com/ (http://www.disraeli-demon.com/) is concerned - look at everything because it's cool - but there are some handy hints on colouring in the "education" section.

It's not just Matt who does this informative sort of thing either.
Dave Taylor (http://d-taylor-comics-music-ford-mustangs.blogspot.com/), Kevin Nowlan (http://kevinnowlan.blogspot.com/), Leigh Gallagher (http://leighgallagherart.blogspot.com/) and Dylan Teague (http://dylansdrawingboard.blogspot.com/) have all blogged about their process too.
For the painters out there look no further than Glenn Fabry's website:
and the step-by-step tutorial (http://www.glennfabry.co.uk/workinprogress.htm) that's there.

There are many other artists that have reasonably regularly updated blogs. Sometimes you'll see a page of pencils go up, try inking a page of art that a professional has produced. You are guaranteed to learn something about their process.

A fantastic place to find a huge number of links to comic artists and other things of interest is Mark Kardwell's Bad Librarianship Blog (http://www.badlibrarianship.com/).

Hopefully that's got you started - go search, find things - it'll enrich your next round of samples.

There are some very fine tutorial pages by the brilliant Frazer Irving on http://www.imaginefx.com (http://www.imaginefx.com). You can download them as PDFs. Been online for a while but worth reading.

I would post this in the lettering thread but I'll post here so you don't miss it...

As I've been told several times it all comes down to the font you choose but from my experience, Unmasked from Blambot works well at 10pt on an A4 page. If you type out a balloon using this font and size then compare it to the font you are using, you should be able to work out what size to choose.

Hope this helps.

Alright guys can I ask for some advice? Whats the best digital lettering starter kit, at a relatively low price. I considered using Abode Illustrator as per Jim's other thread (sticky above this one actually) but apparently it's about £15 a month and as a starting point that's too steep for me.

Manga Studio (now Clip Paint Studio) has fixed some of it's more egregious text handling features so can now be used for lettering, but if you want to work as a pro level letterer you'll need illustrator (or high end equiv)

I'm afraid the bar to entry for lettering is quite high — there's no special reason why Illustrator should have high-level typographic controls that are missing from cheaper software, but it's generally true. There are people lettering at pro-level using CorelDraw, and small press/indy guys using share/freeware like Inkscape. As PJ notes, MangaStudio/ClipStudio has recently updated its text handling — it's better, but it's still not great.

The most credible Illustrator alternative right now, for my money, is Affinity Designer from Serif. Designer is (I'm afraid) Mac-only right now, but Serif have announced that a Windows version is a high priority with a public beta due "in the summer". I'd assume the Windows version would be the same price as the Mac — £40 for a perpetual license, free updates guaranteed for at least one year.

(Affinity Photo is an equally credible Photoshop contender, BTW, and well worth a look. The quality of both these packages makes me very hopeful for the their DTP package — Affinity Publisher — which is due by the end of 2016...)

Cheers

Jim

I found this video this morning while browsing Deviant Art. It's an hour long but it talks about gestural figure drawing and touches on storytelling.
For me figure drawing is a real discipline and hard to master, but is essential for sequential art. Within the first 20 minutes when he draws a gesture the penny dropped :)

Gonna try this as soon as I find some elasticated string!
