Post by: pert on 20 September, 2013, 10:13:47 PM
Madness, The Human League and Anthrax have all done songs inspired by 2000AD, Buster Bloodvessel and Lemmy are also fans, Russell T Davis is also a fan as there were various homages during his producreship of Doctor Who, any others we know of?

This has been discussed in the past on this forum.

Don't know about "are fans". As for "were and might still be fans":

Phil Oakey, The Human League (already mentioned):

Peter Hook, New Order:

And not forgetting another bunch of oldies, Shriekback with 'Nemesis':

The Manic Street Preachers.

Richey Edwards said he was never into the macho guns and sci-fi crap, but loved Nemesis and thought Kano was one of the most beautiful characters ever created. "A cross between Kurtz and the Virgin Mary". Their song from the 1995 Dredd soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfowHUIoTUQ) was the last thing he worked on (although he never played on anything) before he went missing.

We should make 2000ad - the album as a downloadable playlist. Featuring all the songs, and songs by bands, that are inspired by 2000ad.

I assume that playlist includes Transvision Vamp's Hanging out with Halo Jones?

I'm not sure who the fan was, but I used to be on a Mute Records mailing list (or maybe it was their MySpace page or something) and their messages were always signed Clara Pandy.

Yes there should be a 2000ad one that features Transvision Vamp, The Fink Brothers, Shriekback etc.
Maybe even include songs by Halo James and whatever Human League song it is where he's wearing a Dredd T-Shirt in the video.

Probably more of a 'grew up with it' rather than a current reader, but Charlie Brooker has been known to slip a few obscure 2000ad references into his Guardian articles from time to time.

I believe Chis Nolan was/is also a fan.

Although I'm sure he'd hate to think of himself as a celebrity, Kevin Foakes (AKA DJ Food, Strictly Kev) is definitely a pretty high-profile Squaxx.  As well as regularly featuring 2000AD-related items on his blog (http://www.djfood.org/djfood/) he commissioned Henry Flint to do artwork for the cover of his 2011 album The Search Engine, which also featured a track titled In Orbit Every Monday (another track, The Illectrik Hoax, was a nod to the old Milligan & McCarthy Sounds strip).  Not to mention a pretty glorious collection of 2000AD artwork...

Oh, and he also got a spot in The Streets of Dan Francisco as the Strictly Kev gang

British director Peter Hewitt (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0382072/) said he was a fan of 2000ad, and was actively trying to land the Dredd film gig in the early nineties. He directed Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, The Borrowers, Garfield and Thunderpants, so at least his Dredd film would have been funny.

Sadly, he's not the same person as Peter Howitt (//http://) - who played leather trousered ladies' man Joey Boswell in shitter than you remember eighties sitcom Bread, and went on to direct Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors for some reason. Although, prior to the invention of the internet, I thought he was.

While we're on film industry types, Robocop screenwriters Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner are big fans of Dredd comics.

SOAP's demonstrating a new game he's devised for long car journeys, Six Degrees of Karl Urban.

Prog 520 contains a list of 10th birthday greetings from a list of the showbiz world's brightest lights, including: Lemmy, Werzel, Jonathan Ross, Scott Ian, Suggs & Carl, Hank Wangford, Robert Smith, and - quite implausibly - RUN DMC. It doesn't help that the reported good wishes of the latter are "Dredd is totally def. Chill out", which is what my Mum would come up with if she was trying to fake a telegram from a hip hop crew. The Reverend Run does appear to hate crime (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=l-O5IHVhWj0#t=64), mind you.

Aye, he did a feature on 2000ad in The Independent for the 30th anniversary which made me seek out Origins. Getting tenuous, Neil Morrissey read a copy of the monthly during an episode of Boon. He chuckled "Nemesis the Warlock!" as he settled down for a read, and since the lord of flies didn't feature in that particular issue I'm assuming he (or someone involved) had some prior knowledge of 2000ad.

I seem to remember a letter or something from Robert Smith of The Cure in an 80's prog.

Die Antwoord for sure; they used to be called MaxNormalTV.

The Manic Street Preachers - I remember an old interview where they bemoaned the fact that writers like Pat Mills, John Wagner and Alan Moore don't get as much recognition as 'proper' book writers.  Wonder what they made of Garth Ennis's Muzak Killer?

Not that god-awful Halo James, though, as I vaguely remember the lead singer's description of Halo Jones as being something like: 'He's this cool guy who blows aliens away.'

Do the prop guys/set dressers/costumes dept. on 'The IT Crowd' count? I've spotted the Dredd vs Death statue and D.R. & Quinch statues over the years and recall Roy wearing the Invasion ('Laugh This off Twinkletoes') T-shirt in at least one episode.

And if those things DO count, then I also spotted a McMahon Dredd T-shirt draped over the back of the chair that Peter Falk sits on in 'The Princess Bride'!

Alien Sex Fiend's Nik fiend for sure (real name Nick Wade, I believe) - they used to advertise their albums in the prog, and I want a re-release of that Stare into the Face of Death t-shirt badly - loved mine till it fell apart!
Phil Okaey definitely - the video for Together in Electric Dreams (not a HL song, incidentally, it's a Phil Oakey / Gerogio Moroder song)
I'm pretty sure Gary Numan is a fan, he's certainly a comics and sci-fi fan.  I might to ask him next time he does a Q&A thing on his website.

Johnny Vegas appears to be a big fan (in more ways than one) Last night tweeting his excitement of having prog 1900 to read in bed.

Flipping through a stack of old progs I came accross this letter in prog 417

I had a look on google but can't find the image in question. It's probably been posted elsewhere on this forum..can some one point me to it?

Paul Reynolds may also be something of a celebrity himself as he (may) has (have) had  a drawing and a letter published in 2000ad. That is if he is the same Paul Reynolds who had 'Mean Machine Tharg' printed in Prog 746. This chap was from Tadworth though which is 75 miles from letter writer Paul's home of Gosport, but I'm sure he could have moved that far in 6 years. I can't think of anyone else at all who has had a letter and a drawing printed in 2000ad. Not a single name...

If you look closer, you'll see his first home is, in fact, a boat. Which would make the process even easier.

Can't help you with the other part though. Does Bishop count as a celebrity for being on The Weakest Link?

Talking of gameshow 2000AD mentions, I appeared on the BBC's National Lottery gameshow "This Time Tomorrow" a few years back. When asked By Tess Daly what I was into, I told her comics and when she asked what sort, I actually stated "my favourite publisher is Marvel but my favourite comic is 2000AD". I won a major prize and because the show was shot 6 weeks before it went out I did a big letter to Tharg about it thinking it would go in the prog the Wednesday just before the Saturday when my show was broadcast, all you lot would enjoy seeing it get a mention as well as one of your own winning a £5k holiday and even better than all that I'd get a letter of the week if not a Squaxx Dex Thargo. Nothing! Not a mention! That's always annoyed me and still does!

Funny that, I spotted some kid wearing a knitted Dredd jumper on some kids game show, and my letter about it got printed. It didn't get letter of the week though, if that's any consolation.

From the Australian punk compilation released in 1985 'Why march when you can riot', in my opinion the best Dredd song ever recorded.

Wouldn't be at all surprised.

There was a great comment from Geoff Darrow in the Future Shocks documentary that he often likes some actor/artist/musician, then finds out they are a 2000ad fan "and suddenly, it [their work] all makes perfect sense"

Wheatley had a Dredd/2000ad image as his cover picture on Twitter, may still do, so think its safe to say he's a fan.

Both Charlie Higson and Phill Jupitus raved about the Dredd movie on Twitter when it came out, think they are both old-school fans. Directors Christopher Nolan and Joe Cornish (Adam and Joe) have cited 2000ad as an influence on their work (Attack the Block had a very 2000ad feel imo).

I also read that as Geof (sic) Darrow, but it appears more than once and it's definitely Barrow in the doc. So it's the Portishead guy, not the Hard-Boiled guy. Not that it matters   :o

Can anyone confirm whether the Patrick Kane of Coatbridge who had letters featured in Progs 146 and 255 is the same Pat Kane who went on to find a degree of fame with tedious Scotch popsters Hue & Cry and later had a big hissy fit about the original publication of New Adventures of Hitler?

Yes, it'll be the same one.  I interviewed him once, many years ago, and he's a big comics fan.

He and Mark Millar went to the same school, although Pat would have been a few years older than Mark.

Yeah I remember him mentioning 2000 AD when they had a couple of old Tennant Who episodes with commentaries - Halo Jones, Max Normal in Gridlock (although it's also reminiscent of the Terror Tube) and Bisley's Slaine for the look of the devil in The Satan Pit.

This'll be a lot easier once Tharg's Future Shocks Volume One is out, but do you remember which Shocks may have inspired Gridlock?  I can't think of any off-hand.

I like to think that a version of Stewart Lee's 'at school with Richard Hammond' routine happened there for real.
