Really thorough videos of david yardin creating a comic book page. Its great because he talks through every step from drawing roughs to traditional inking.

Indie graphic novel author Grant Chastain (Corrective Measures) did an "Ask Me Anything" on reddit earlier today which may be useful to some.

There seem to be some dead links (to 2000AD forum) in the first post.
With simple link manipulation I was able to get to the General Writing thread (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,25779.0.html) and I'd assume the rest can be corrected likewise!

Alright guys can I ask for some advice? Whats the best digital lettering starter kit, at a relatively low price. I considered using Abode Illustrator as per Jim's other thread (sticky above this one actually) but apparently it's about £15 a month and as a starting point that's too steep for me.

Manga Studio (now Clip Paint Studio) has fixed some of it's more egregious text handling features so can now be used for lettering, but if you want to work as a pro level letterer you'll need illustrator (or high end equiv)

I'm afraid the bar to entry for lettering is quite high — there's no special reason why Illustrator should have high-level typographic controls that are missing from cheaper software, but it's generally true. There are people lettering at pro-level using CorelDraw, and small press/indy guys using share/freeware like Inkscape. As PJ notes, MangaStudio/ClipStudio has recently updated its text handling — it's better, but it's still not great.

The most credible Illustrator alternative right now, for my money, is Affinity Designer from Serif. Designer is (I'm afraid) Mac-only right now, but Serif have announced that a Windows version is a high priority with a public beta due "in the summer". I'd assume the Windows version would be the same price as the Mac — £40 for a perpetual license, free updates guaranteed for at least one year.

(Affinity Photo is an equally credible Photoshop contender, BTW, and well worth a look. The quality of both these packages makes me very hopeful for the their DTP package — Affinity Publisher — which is due by the end of 2016...)

I found this video this morning while browsing Deviant Art. It's an hour long but it talks about gestural figure drawing and touches on storytelling.
For me figure drawing is a real discipline and hard to master, but is essential for sequential art. Within the first 20 minutes when he draws a gesture the penny dropped :)

I hope you good folks find it as entertaining and instructional as I did

Might also be worth noting that Affinity Designer is now at Beta stage for windows...  ;)   https://affinity.serif.com/forum/index.php?/topic/21537-affinity-designer-on-windows-1504/

*cheers to Jim for the heads up.  ;)

PERSPECTIVE MAGIC!

I'm assuming elasticated string, and I think it's been kept in place with some scotch magic tape or something.

Gonna try this as soon as I find some elasticated string!
