Film Discussion / Mitch Murder's "Teguchi" (Dredd video)
17 November, 2020, 02:24:32 PM
I don't know if any of you guys have heard of Mitch Murder. He's a popular synthwave/retrowave/dreamwave musician. The genre he works in is mostly 80's influenced - usually instrumental. It wears it's heart on it's sleeve and celebrates the 80s.

Anyway today he released his new song/video - and it seems he's a fan  :)

Film Discussion / 2000AD movies you'd love to see...
17 October, 2020, 01:17:45 AM
Thought this could be a fun topic. I'd like to just see a movie called 2000AD. An anthology movie with a structure a bit like Cloud Atlas. Telling three or four stories. Dredd, Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper and a future shock thing. Narratives weaving in and out of each other. Tharg occasionally narrating. Maybe one story segment could be animated... I'd love that.

I'd also love to see direct to blu ray animated films like the DC ones that come out from time to time.

Forgive me if I'm doing anyone's head in - it's just I'm really excited that I recently renewed my sub and my head is just in a total 2000AD ZONE.

Film Discussion / How would you do "Dredd 2"?
15 September, 2014, 10:10:08 AM
OK guys. I think I've cracked the way a sequel could be done and how it could lead in a possible third one. I've already touched on some of these points in another post so if I repeat myself please forgive me.
OK - there are rumblings that a new movie would deal with the Origins story. I personally think they should stay away from that. I don't really think this movie universe needs an origin story of any kind - at least certainly not for the first sequel. No - I actually think a perfect story for the sequel would be something akin to The Day The Law Died.
Dredd is called to HQ and told that they want him to partner with Anderson again. She's experiencing terrifying hallucinations and nightmares and whenever she has one of these episodes - an unusual amount of electrical energy is detected around her. The visions and dreams she has are of a skeletal face saying "I'm cooooooming.... you are the dooooorwaaay Andersssssson". Control want Dredd to basically protect Anderson. He is told in secret that for a while now, the existence of other dimensions has been suspected and Anderson may be experiencing some kind of interference from them. Dredd protests about doing a "babysitting" job but reluctantly agrees.
They are interupted by an explosion at the Hall of Justice. Dredd and Anderson are two of the Judges first on the scene. The chief Judge is killed in the explosion and Judge Cal is made temporary acting Chief. Only he's completely insane. Many Judges have been killed or injured.
Turns out Cal was behind the explosion and was hoping Dredd would be killed in it. His plan is to take control of Mega City One and wanted Dredd out of the way to make it easier.
The story would run much like the comic book does. Cal has Dredd, Anderson and the surviving Judges declared outlaws and they must go into the streets and lead a citizen uprising to take control of the city back. They must also prevent an assassination of Hershey who is next in line to be Chief Judge.
It's a story that like the original can be pretty streamlined. The point of it would mainly be to take the action out onto the streets of Mega City One.
Hall of Justice is destroyed, Chief Judge killed. Dredd and Anderson outlawed. They must prevent an assassination on Hershey, remove Cal from power, restore Hershey to her rightful place. BOSH. There's your movie.
The thing about Anderson's nightmares and hallucinations would be a subplot. During the course of the story we see her occasionally zone out and have one of her episodes. Dredd grows increasingly concerned about her throughout the course of the events. At the end they destroy Cal and put Hershey in place and control is restored to the city. However Anderson suddenly collapses. Dredd catches her and urgently calls for medical backup. Anderson is not breathing and Dredd desperately performs CPR on her. Suddenly her eyes open, the camera zooms right into her iris where we see the face of Judge Death who laughs then screams "I AM HERE!!"
Fade to black. Film ends. Then we have the Dark Judges story set up for the third.

I've said before in here that I don't think the Dark Judges can be done in one of these movies - but I think if they set the story up as a subplot in the previous film before they do it properly, maybe audiences could accept it. It would have to be done through the Anderson character much like it is in the comics. I'm still not completely convinced... but fuck it. If I had the job of directing the sequel I reckon I'd have a crack at it.

What about you guys? If it was up to you would you take an approach like this or do things differently?

Can anyone tell me what date this is going to be out? I googled it and a couple of results told me March 26. Is that right? I need to know for sure...

Sometimes, I'll be walking along. Quite happy, minding my own business. Maybe stopping to smell the odd flower whilst I feel the warm sun on my smiling little face. And then, for no reason at all, I'll remember something humiliating - probably as far back to my teenage years - and stop, assume the fetal position where I'm standing - cradling my face in my hands - and shout something along the lines of "ARRRRGHHH!!!!"

It can strike anytime. Even when I'm in the company of a friend. I'll just do it, they'll ask me what's the matter and I'll try and explain... but not be able to get halfway through the sentence without exclaiming "ARRRRGHHH!!!!" again.

Does anyone else suffer from this debilitating condition?

OK I thought this would be a cool thread. Sorry if its been done. I was thinking this last night.

We've all heard the word that the blu-ray/DVD sales of Dredd have got the powers that be thinking there may be an audience for a sequel and it might be worth doing. Of course, even this alone is great news. So the big question is, what would we like to see in it? You never know... the filmmakers may look at this forum for ideas - stranger things have happened.

Anyway, I'll kick off this convo about what I want to see. Must warn you though, you may find some of my ideas a bit controversial...

Like this for instance: I don't EVER want to see Judge Death or the Dark Judges at any time in these movies. Why? Because one of the great things about Dredd  (for me) was it scaled back the world of Mega City One and made it believable. I loved how the film depicted the city and the world, and the fact that it was a lot less futuristic for me, created a better atmosphere. I LOVED the way it was done. I'd like that more realistic tone to be continued in sequels, and I personally think that all of a sudden introducing undead villains from another dimension would take something away from that.

Of course, I could be wrong. This is only my opinion after all. I just think that sometimes doing something the please the fans can actually hurt a movie and I offer Spider-Man 3 as an example. Seriously, how badly did they fuck up Venom? And I ain't even a Marvel fan and I'm saying that!

I also think they should avoid using Rico as a heavy. As much as we all hate the Stallone Judge Dredd film - Danny Cannon was a huge fan and that was HIS approach. Whilst most of us I'm sure would prefer that movie never happened, I think it would be disrespectful to the vision of those filmmakers to try and redo something they've already done - whether it was successful or not. That also means no Angel Family, no ABC robots, and no bullshit about Dredd being stripped of his rank or anything like that.

I would say NO Cursed Earth either - but I think that's something that cannot really be ignored and will need to be looked at in any further installments. I just think they've got to do it in such a way that it in NO WAY reminds audiences of the 95 film. And that, I think IS possible.

What I personally WOULD like to see is a story set pretty much entirely on the streets of Mega City One. Maybe a film set the next day after Dredd where he's told to take Anderson onto the streets to continue with her training. I'd like to see a story which takes SOME cues from The Day The Law Died, and maybe Dredd and Anderson have to stop some sort of revolution/coup - with Dredd actually siding with the people of MC1 to restore order and justice to a city and a system which has become corrupt. Of course, you're in tricky territory cause some of that stuff was used in the 95 movie - so some careful picking and choosing would have to be done. But I think a story that ends with Dredd, some other Judges, and some deputized citizens storming the Hall Of Justice to essentially dethrone a mad ruler could really be something to see!

Anyway, that's my two cents. What about you guys?

Books & Comics / Superman: Secret Origin
30 May, 2013, 03:46:52 PM
Honestly guys, this is the greatest version of Superman's origin I've read yet! I sure hope the Man Of Steel movie takes some cues from this... cause this shit makes me excited about comic books again! This book really has it all! And it SHITS on Birthright (which I never really liked, although I do have a nice hardback of it).

The script is amazing, it covers everything - and the artwork will make you swoon! This doesn't quite match Superman For All Season (what does?) but still... this is truly special. I cannot recommend it enough. I just think I found a new favourite comic!  :)

Film & TV / Worst comic book you've ever read?
26 May, 2013, 03:04:23 PM
I reckon the worst ever comic I have EVER read has GOT to be Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis which was released to coincide with the EXCELLENT LucasArts videogame of the same name.

I tried to track it down for absolutely years - but when I finally managed to get a copy - I honestly thought it was the biggest piece of shit I've ever read.

What about you guys?

Prog / Digging the cover on 1830!!!
01 May, 2013, 03:57:14 PM
Since I made such a fuss over not approving of the headless guy on the cover a few weeks back - I think it's only fair I should make equal fuss when I LOVE what's been done!

Dunno quite what possessed the guys at Rebellion to go retro this week - but very well done! Hope this is a start of a trend! Me and the newsagent had quite a chuckle over it!

If the Mighty Tharg is taking requests I'd love to see something done in the style of late 80's early 90's - cause that's when I would've been reading it as a kid! Might even buy some penny sweets and a Hush Puppy to go with it? (Remember Hush Puppies - they were, ahem "Zarjazz", lol)

A retro cover for the Meg would also be VERY WELCOME!!!

Seriously, I was made up with this. Nice one fellas!  :D

I guess due to a somewhat conservative budget, the makers of the film couldn't make MC1 as flashy and spectacular as it is in the comics (and to some extent, in the Stallone movie). There's a distinct lack of flying cars and stuff. The only really overly futuristic elements are the stupidly tall buildings and those planes that fly around beaming images back to control.

Personally, I actually prefer it. It actually feels like a real city and I can kind of identify with it a bit more. In the Stallone movie it's like a gleaming metropolis (totally wrong) yet here it looks thoroughly FUCKED up and nasty. And plus, the opening chase wouldn't have been as thrilling if it had been in the air.

This is a great example of something being changed to suit a different medium, and I think the more grounded vision of the city (and I guess, of the future) works better.

Whilst the overtly futuristic element works gangbusters in the comic, it just looked totally stupid and plastic in the 95 film. I'm glad the newer one took this approach. Just made the movie ten times better.

What do you guys think?

11 April, 2013, 05:44:37 PM
Years ago, I had the honour of being moderator for Steven Awalt's critically acclaimed www.spielbergfilms.com.
Regretfully that site is defunct. However, the community rose from the ashes and formed PlayMountain. We too started out as a Spielberg fansite, but over the years we've evolved into a general film site.

www.playmountain.net

I'm a founding member and administrator, and contribute articles from time to time. The beauty of our site is that we review all the latest films, but every now and then you'll see an article on an old obscure one. There are no rules. We are a film website run BY film fans, FOR film fans. We were big supporters of Dredd aswell.

Please, come over and check the site out! And why not join the forums and have a chat while you're there?
Be lovely to see you guys...

General / Judge Dredd: Lawman Of The Future
11 April, 2013, 03:47:19 PM
We're currently spring cleaning the house and I found an interesting little curiosity. Issue One of a magazine called Judge Dredd: Lawman Of The Future. It was published in 1995, the same year that the Stallone movie came out. Dredd's costume was drawn to look like Stallone's from the movie, and I think the comic was supposed to be an ongoing title. I don't know if any more editions were published after this. Sadly, I've lost the trading card that was given with the title as a free gift.

Anyone got info on this?

Prog / Dudes! What's with the cover on Prog 1827?!?
10 April, 2013, 09:18:26 PM
Look, you know I love you guys and am a huge fan - but the cover this week was a bit much wasn't it?  :o
When my wife picked it up from the newsagents for me earlier, she had a RIGHT look of disgust on her face when she handed it to me, and told me to put it upstairs straight away so the kids didn't see it!

I know 2000AD can be very gory at times, and I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I kinda like it! But a headless dude on the front cover?!?! My newsagent only gets in two copies a week now, and always kind of reserve one for me. The one they have left behind they have no choice to put out with the kids comics cause there is no other room on their shelves. Apparently, the lady behind the counter wasn't impressed either.

This isn't a complaint, it's just a bit of a moan - so please take it the way it was intended and don't flame me. I just felt something had to be said, that's all.

I looked for it in Smith's this morning, but nothing. Any ideas people?
