Title: BARNEY updated! Props to The Cosh
Post by: Wake on 30 March, 2011, 11:10:18 AM
Thanks to a sterling effort by The Cosh, BARNEY (http://www.2000ad.org/) is not only back up to date for the progs and megs, but some of the more recent graphic novels have been added too (mostly the Judge Dredd case files).

Hopefully I'll be able to do some more work on the site over the summer and autumn before I get busy again next winter.

These updates are always welcome. Though it seems the Graphic Novel section is rather out of date (and could use a whole new section for Simon & Schuster editions.) Anything I could do to help?

Does anyone have a proper list for of the S&S editions?

This is what I have so far;

Judge Dredd - The Complete Case Files 01
The Complete D.R. & Quinch
Death Lives
ABC Warriors: The Meknificent Seven
Harry 20 on the High Rock
Judge Dredd - Mega City Masters
The Ballard of Halo Jones
The Complete Nemesis the Warlock - Volume 1
Judge Dredd - Mega City Masters - Volume 02
Zombo
Slaine - Warriors Dawn
Hewligan's Haircut
Judge Dredd - The Complete Case Files 02
The Complete Bad Company
Judge Dredd - Mega City Masters - Volume 03
Lenny Zero

I don't think the last two have been published yet.

The obvious answer is Simon and Schuster do, most recent first:

There is one here too, I didn't stumble across it until the other day despite there being quite an obvious link on the front page ;) :

Ah yes. This is most likely due to me not actually bothering to tell Wake I'd updated the reprint details.

And it is all updated now, as are the progs and megs - good stuff everyone.

Just a few other things I noticed - Dogbreath 17 is missing its cover and both Zarjaz and Dogbreath could do with updating too (see if there is a way you can slot in the Zarjaz Presents: Dark Judgement somewhere too), I'm sure the chaps can sort you out with that. While we are on the fanzines, it'd be nice to also include Nu-Earth and Tales From the Emerald Isle, I've already indexed them on the comicbookdb so you can take the details from there if it saves time:

Good question - the daily star credits are somewhat...fluid.  The previous story was by McKenzie and Smith, and the first part of this story was credited to the same. The second part changes the credit to McKenzie and Pino.

However, McKenzie stories were almost all with SMith as artist, and having now read the rest of the story, it seems pretty Millarish to me!  Orlok might have more of an idea of they updated the credit to show Millar later in the run - i only have credits for the first 6-7 parts

Big congrats to all those keeping Barney alive - its easily my favourite 2000ad related site (present company excepted, naturally) noticed a couple of edits for Barney -

Prog 32-33 has a future shock called 'Excursion' which is 4 pages in total (over 2 progs, 2 pages each) whereas Barney lists it as 8 pages in total.

Prog 6 has a Harlem Heroes Scan that is by O'Neil - un-credited in Barney.

I thought I'd posted these before, but I have a horrible suspicion I found them and then got distracted by a shiny... ooo look. Anyway:

Correcting some Brendan McCarthy credits:

"The Witness" prog 500 (but not 501) - art is credited to McCarthy/Whittaker - no credits for a Whittaker elsewhere but they also get an art credit (as "Whitaker") in "Oz" part 8 prog 552.

It was Mike McMahon who drew ABC Warriors story in prog 129, not McCarthy.

Future Shocks: Bad Maxwell in prog 402 is credited to a J. Roberts, not McCarthy (unless it is a pseudonym).

Also, if it helps, the Wagner/Grant McCarthy Dredds are creditted to T.B. Grover down to and including "Atlantis" and before that the John Wagner solo ones are credited to John Howard).

Is this the place where we point out Errors? Prog 1755 (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=prog&page=profiles&choice=1755) is missing a listing for the Bob Byron Twisted Tale that appears within. Just thought I'd point that out.

Thanks to Orlok of this parish, I have a few more updates for the Daily Star Dredds - this time, the one off Saturday strips:

All titles provided by Orlok himself!

226  - Christmas Carol
227 - Hogmanay
228 - Diggers
229 - Mega Fried General
230 - 5th Assessment
231 - Queue
237 - A Princely Error (swap with 241 School for high flyers
257 - Spotty
261 - Leaper (theres alreasy a "The Leaper", but it seems the best fit - the alternative "I bet" has also already been used!)
263 - Tourist Trap - Art by John Higgins!
264 - Beggar  -Art by Brett Ewins
265 - Wedding Vows - Ian Gibson from now on with one exception:
268 - Follower - Art by Steve Dillon!
276 - sadly this is unknown, as "How the other half lives" is actually 278
279 - Christmas Dinner

I also have my suspicions that a couple of strips may have been recycled - Christmas Pardon is number 70 on the copy i have, but was listed as 123 ( a whole year after) when reprinted in the Meg - its possible they filled in a week with it - its a bit of a coincidence otherwise!

A quick correction:

Harlem Heroes: Cyborg Death Trip - inks Stewart Johnson (931-932) and Siku (933-939)

Kev Hopgood gets solo art credit for prog 928-930, so you'd presumably need:

QuoteArtist: Kev Hopgood (pencils), Kev Hopgood (inks, 928-930), Stewart Johnson (inks , 931-932) and Siku (inks , 933-939)

What would it take to get GN listings up to date on the Barney site? I'm noticing the Graphic Novel listings are woefully out of date, and would like to help where I can to get the listings up to current. I'd also like to see a Simon & Schuster section, as that line of books seems to be growing rapidly. If I compliled a list and a list of contents, and maybe some cover scans, would it possible to get them included on the site? I'm not sure who's running it these days.

Also, and I can't help with this one because I don't have copies, can we get some Meg suplement GNs scans for Megazines 302 to present? As they are MIA.

During the clearance sale I've put my hand on some Extreme edition. It seems the credits for M.A.C.H.1 in #6 doesn't fully match Barney's database. For example, script for 2000AD #2 and 13 are credited to Pat Mills in Extreme edition. Plus, in Barney's database for Extreme Edition #6, the story Airship (prog #13) is not listed (I have the magazine in my hand and it is in).

Barney seems to be missing some starscans in the 840, 950 and 970 region as well as some scattered ones (and Liam Sharp's recent ABC Warriors, some of which don't have a placeholder):

One other small error I noticed in the character profiles: Roffman is credited as having appeared in The Cal Files, but it was actually in Beyond the Call of Duty (progs 1101-1110) and Scorpion Dance (1125-32) that he made his first appearances.

As both Dave Gibbons and Mick McMahon have confirmed it, the Angel Gang pin-up from Prog 196 should be credited to them and not Cam Kennedy.  (McMahon pencils, Gibbons inks).

Yeah, the hand and Dredd uniform bits, as well as the perps collar scream Robin Smith - given he was putting the covers together at this point, I dont doubt he's tinkered there
I'd belatedly second this -- I said as much on a thread here years ago!
Cheers
Jim
Robin Smith designed a heck of a lot of classic covers – which the artists tend to be given all the credit for. His influence on 2000AD should not be underestimated.

Don't know if that question has ever been address: in Barney's database for JD CCF #1 the bonus strips are not listed (i.e. The First Dredd and Walter the Wobot strips). Is it because the first print didn't include them? (I own the third print)

I was reading the Downloade Tales vol. 3 reprint and wanted to check its contents in the Barney database and where it fell in the Sin Dex reprint chronology. Only to find out neither Eurocrash or Moneyshots are listed or indexed in the database.

Is there anything I can do to get them on Barney and properly cross indexed?

While BARNEY is severely lacking on the recent spate of graphic novels, the original stories are there:

Eurocrash 13 episodes (Progs 1127 to 1139) 87 pages
Script: Dan Abnett, Artist: Simon Davis

Money Shots 2 episodes (Progs 1227 to 1228)
Script: Dan Abnett, Artist: Andy Clarke, Colour: Chris Blythe

For both you have to select thrills 51-100

Right. But I meant the actual contents of the graphic novels of the same names. I was trying to figure out where the second story of Downlode Tales Volume 3 was located in the currently existing reprint chronology.

I managed to figure it out on my own, but I was disappointed to see the database out of date on such older reprint collections.

I've mentioned it before but I'd be willing to contribute Barney content if it was at all possible. Meg reprint floppy covers, missing UK trades, US S&S trades and contents, etc...

Recently was able to use Barney to note a couple of free gifts I was missing in the earlier issues, but noted that the info ends with 1771.  The Meagazine is more up to date, but ends at 347, with no pic of the free gifts back as far as 302.  If I gathered up the relevant info, how would it be added to the files, by The Cosh, or uploaded in a wickipedia type fashion of which I am currently unaware?

Its been quite a while since Barney's been updated. Which is sad because it's still the best 2000 AD resource on the web. Is there any chance of an expected future update to bring things up to date? I once again offer my services to maintaining the database to whomever is in charge of it.

As it happens, a fairly sizable update has been primed for action over the past couple of weeks, but I believe the Gatekeeper has been busy with other things so it awaits his return.

The update cycle seems to have been an unwitting victim of my digital migration. When I have a pile of Progs lying there I tend to reread and catalogue them before sticking them in the box at the end of each set of stories. I find it's easier to let the backlog build up when I can't actually see it.

Should hopefully get a bunch of GNs in along with this year's Progs and Megs and maybe some exciting additional extras.

NB Yes, I did just indirectly refer to myself as the Keymaster. No point arguing unless you're a God.

Let's hope this day never comes.  It's only The Cosh's unfulfilled yearning for Sauchielove that keeps him at his unending task, once the deed is done, who knows what the consequences for squaxxdom might be.  Look what happened to Jane Seymour in Live and Let Die, like that but with Bikini Kill in the Roger Moore role.

The link to the cover browser was posted on another thread and I noticed a few technical issues...

cover browser link (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=covers&page=progs&MaxProg=2000&FirstProg=1960&LastProg=2000)

From where I am:

"1970 Strontium Dog Jon Davis-Hunt" is a broken image ref

"1979 Sláine Simon Davis" (and any other references to the warped one) has strange formatting on the name Sláine (though this could just be my browser / operating system settings or something else that isn't worth the amount of effort it might take to fix)

"1995 Black Shuck Jon Davis-Hunt" is clearly Anderson, Psi-Division, not Black Shuck

Just so that I'm not just quibbling, great work on updating the best 2000AD reference on the web :-)

On the updates issue, would it help if we posted contents/creator details and cover scans here every week, or is it the coding side of things that cuts into the time The Cosh can devote to cycling and hipster cultural pursuits?

This one always drives me bonkers when I do it.  Either I've mistyped the name of the file (even a single character different can throw it) or I've misnamed it in the database.  Generally an easy fix, just checking the SQL or the image name.

For the Progs and Megs, the offer's appreciated but it wouldn't really help much. There's not really any coding to it. It's just collating the data, doing some lookups against the strip and droid names then getting Wake to fix my mistakes after they're loaded.

I even wrote a script to pull the covers out of my digital Progs so it's more about apathy. I'd like to get back on the old schedule of an update at the end of the standard 10/12 Prog run of stories but we'll see how that goes.

On the other hand, if anyone can point me in the direction of contents and cover scans for the Mega Collection, that would be very helpful as I don't buy them.

Pat Mills & Clint Langley's Earthside 8/Alternity (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=29742.0) reject, Dinosty, isn't on Barney (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=index)'s list of 2000ad creator-owned strips.

Mills drops that bomb here (https://hwcdn.libsyn.com/p/d/4/8/d48162129777f39b/Ep78-ECBT2000ad-PatMills2.mp3?c_id=4324949&cs_id=4324949&destination_id=48889&expiration=1558536237&hwt=ed1e6ef3bdaa5560522ac9c947c36fa6) (1h 18m 50s), but, frustratingly, doesn't explain how that happened.

It's interesting to note how many creator-owned strips Tharg has published over the years, even if the news some of them were creator-owned came as a surprise. *

'The Fall of Deadworld' is annoyingly hard to find on Barney, as it's incorrectly listed as 'Tainted' (which was just the name of the first story) and that first story is instead listed as 'The Fall of Deadworld.'

The naming conventions on the entire Deadworld saga have been tricky to track. Superbly creative, but difficult to track. Whilst I don't want to push the Dark Judges into my A-Z just yet (work in progress), I do have some info for you:

Dreams of Deadworld
Fire   1946
Mortis   1947
Fear   1948
Death   1949

The Fall of Deadworld
Tainted   1973-1981
Winter Break   2011
Cursed   2023-2033
Home   2050
Ava   2061
Damned   2081-2092
Running Scared   2111
Doomed   2150-2161
Sidney   2162

Visions of Deadworld
Last Man Standing   2210
The Good Samaritan   2211
A Girl's Gotta Eat   2212
You Give Me Fever   2225
The Man Who Killed Mortis   2226
Leigh   2227

---

On a side note, Judge Fear: Memories Are Made of This (prog 2073) serves as a sort of thematic bridge between the off-world Dark Justice saga and the Deadworld saga.

Dark Justice   p2015, 1912-1921
Dominion    M386-M391
The Torture Garden   M400-M409
Deliverance   M424-M430

Cheers for this. I have most of these already up or waiting for latest covers to get uploaded but I'll double check I've got everything.

You've already identified the main problem with finding them on Barney though. The first Fall of Deadworld story ran with the strip and story names in reversed order to later ones. As a result of this, they're all currently listed under Tainted (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=profiles&Comic=2000AD&choice=tainted).

Well, Cosh sort of inherited it on a purely voluntary basis from Wake - who was maybe once paid to maintain it. So, like, it's not anyone's job. And you can imagine, if one does actually have a job - then doing another job in your spare time for no recompense is entirely up to one's own timetable.

Perhaps King Jason of Sley might be-knight someone and give them the job of maintaining Barney - but Barney is rather a fossil, as interwebby stuff goes. I love Barney, but he's a bit niche. (He doesn't really inform one about where to purchase currently available gubbins, for example.)

Blah...

I think 2000AD needs a really good wiki. There are some wikis out there, but nothing of the quality of, say, the TARDIS Data Core (which isn't perfect, but which I think does a very comprehensive job of collecting information about the worlds of Doctor Who and its spin-offs from across different media).

I'd love an updated Barney with high resolution images, but that seems like an insane project that would be expensive and unloved.

On the other hand, an official wiki would be great (hosted here) and (since I'm doing wishful thinking) integrated with the 2000ad app.
