It looks like its Regicide again in the Conservative party. After the May-Bot deactivation, her replacement will be a Euroskeptic hardliner who will appeal to the grassroots and UKIP-ers. It means we almost guarantee to crash out on the E.U on the 29th of March, not much fun there. It's going to be the worst of all worlds, possibly fatal to the Car Industry and others but I doubt we'll get a General Election or a second Referendum. 2019, for all the wrong reasons, will be a year to remember as the post-Cold War consensus gets increasingly replaced by Nationalism. Shite!

I haven't followed the link or seen the footage but I'm assuming it's 'We're not gonna take it' and not 'I wanna rock'.

I have never seen the Star Wars holiday special, apart from clips. I didnt even know about it back in the day.

(Oh, I never saw the two Ewoks films either, although I do remember reading about the first in a magazine.)

From what I've read, that may be a good thing. But ... I'm still curious.

I wanted to see Caravan of Courage when it came out (though don't think it actually made it to any cinema I could have gone to).  In the decades since I've seen the Holiday Special and both Ewok films.  Possibly worth seeing.  Once.  And never again.

Have to say I'm with your colleagues here. Don't remember Star Wars being a notable part of Christmas telly (obviously it was a key component of Christmas presents right up until I was oh, 43.)

Yep, and Star Wars toys. Every Xmas since the release of the first film. Not nativity toys, not baby Jesus toys - Star Wars toys.

Otherwise, yes - TV at Xmas is pants. But that was ok when all three films had come out, and TV stations were fighting between them about when to show Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. Best Xmasses ever!!! 

I certainly associate Raiders with Christmas TV, but not Star Wars.  I'm sure I would have received Palitoy / Kenner toys for christmas, but the earliest presents I can recall right now are a computer-compatible tape player, the 1985 2000AD and Judge Dredd annuals and the Titan editions of the Ballad of Halo Jones (not all in the same year).

Yes, it's my fault for watching at all and feeding the click economy (acknowledged that in my previous post), but it's hard to ignore literally rows of thumbnails of hate. Everytime I get one, I ask not to get any more from that channel and on that topic and give my reason. And tomorrow there's another selection (plus anti-ST Discovery and anti-TLJ Vids... Hmm,  what do they have in common?) overwhelming the stuff I do want to watch.

Hence my whine that it's hard to enjoy - or judge - the show in isolation. It exists in a monetized warzone. The only option seems to be to stick my fingers in my ears and leave the shits to rant unopposed, and claim overwhelming consensus. It's not exactly a pleasant idea.

Not heard of that B-guy before - couldn't face actually watching any of the vids he'd posted (largely because I'm pretty sure he'd get some money out of me from advert views or something) but did click on the images tab of google and saw the titles of loads of his videos without having to visit youtube.  Yep - he seems to hate all the things I like, and uses pictures of black people and women while ranting about how bad everything is.


I get the same problem with youtube recommendations - anything Star Wars related seems  to have the words "everything wrong with" or similar attached to the vid title, so I don't check out any Star Wars suggestions any more.


Oh, another reason not to follow the B-hating guy - it'd pollute my recommendations even further!

Somebody on twitter rather sharply noted the lack of previous outrage at Victorian England episodes, the Shakespeare episode, the Pompeii episode... just the Rosa Parks and Indian Partition episodes. Funny, that.

Also the series was intended, right from the very beginning, to be (what is now called) edutainment - going to different historical eras and showing the kids around.  Hence, visits to prehistory, journeying to Cathay with Marco Polo, Aztecs and the French Revoltion.  Kind of went off-track in later series, but the intention was there from the first episode in 1963.
