Milligan & McCarthy: Summer of Love

Mark Kardwell at Bad Librarianship* posted a request for help with scans of episodes from Milligan & McCarthy's News on Sunday strip from 1987.

I had a scan of one episode on my hard drive - from an unremembered source (probably related to this forum though, possibly from Robbie Cox?) and sent it in along with a link to the episode Rufus has the original art for.

It's a long shot, I know, but does anyone here have any more, or access to newspaper archives coupled with a nerdy sense of adventure?

It's criminal how little Milligan & McCarthy work is in print; I'd love to see this collected (along with everything from Artoons to Zaucer of Zilk) but in the meantime it would be great to see a few more Summer of Love episodes unearthed.

Actually, checking back and looking at the comments on that post, I see that Sean Philips has stepped up and offered scans of all the episodes (so they'll be posted on Mark's blog at some point).  Great stuff!

Nerdy archivists can stand down (sorry).

Awesomeness! What with the Electric Hoax and Dr. Cipher pages on David Hine's blog we are really being treated this month. Thanks for the heads up, Ming :)

Bottle Rocket

That is the first I've ever seen of The Summer of Love. I had heard about it, and it looks corking. I sadly missed getting Swimini purpose  :(

The scans have now emerged here, seems we are still missing an instalment:

QuoteIn January, I posted at Bad Librarianship the two examples of the strip I could find while trawling the net, and casually challenged my readership to send me any more they may have come across. Soon enough, two seemingly complete sets turned up in my inbox. The strip is far from Milligan and McCarthy's greatest work, but even a minor work by a team in the middle of a legendary hot streak is worth studying. And of course, it's beautiful to look at.

Apparently there's an eighth unpublished episode languishing in existence somewhere. Sean Phillips claimed to have seen it, and even narrowly missed out on buying it. I don't suppose anyone out there knows of its whereabouts?

if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

That's cleared up a mystery or two. When I'd seen those two stories mentioned in interviews, I'd always imagined they were books done for US publishers or something. Oddly enough, I never saw a copy, or even knew of the existence of the socialist Sunday tabloid in which they first appeared.

With Brendan McCarthy in particular it's difficult to keep track of what's actual published work and what are just ideas or unmade treatments that I've read him mention in interviews- like Horrorville. I'm with Ming on the need for something that collects all Milligan and McCarthy's stuff in a single tome, and there's £40 in my back pocket for the enterprising fellow who publishes it in the right format.

Good to see those pop up at last.  I actually found decent scans of a full run (minus the unpublished final episode) during a routine McCarthy Google search (they were posted in a pre-Swimini Purpose McCarthy thread on Barbelith - Phus probably remembers this).  I sent copies to Mark at Bad Librarianship (he already had a set from somewhere) and I guess they'll get an airing there at some point (well, they should).

If I remember, I'll ask Brendan if he recalls anything about the final episode... I doubt it'll ever see the light of day; I wonder if it still exists?

Duh - now I actually click the link Emps provided, I see that it was Mark who posted them up anyway.. :)

It's a joke. I was joking.
