Website and Forum / Barney updates
19 August, 2010, 09:26:38 AM
This is mostly for Wake I imagine, but hey might as well make it a thread. Feel free to throw some database updates in here, folks.

Judge Death is featured in the Judge Anderson story Beyond the Void, from 2000AD Progs 612 to 613. This is a legit encounter from the man, he even get to see in his head as he narrates.

General / John Wagner and sex.
01 August, 2010, 01:14:21 PM
Good topic title, eh? :D

Random question, what are some examples of John Wagner stories where the main character or a prominent character has sex with someone? Not just a one-off random character getting laid, also doesn't have to be from 2000AD.

John is pretty much the best writer in the biz in my book. Just curious, as at the moment I can't think of any, and for a writer who's covered so much I can't think of much he's written involving sex. Of course, needless to say Dredd doesn't get laid, and Alpha was often pretty stoic, refusing Durham Red's advances like Batman would of Catwoman.

One reason this came to mind is A History of Violence. One of the numerous differences is in the movie the main couple are shown having sex on a couple occasions, in the graphic novel they don't. The movie focused more on Tom's wife and their relationship, so it fits better there than it may have in the comic.

Not that every main character needs to get their rocks off, though it seems like something that'd be covered in some of these gritty tales that don't shy away from the taboo.

I'm sure he has written it, but it's not coming to mind. So... sex?

So this gets released in August on 11/08/2010, over a month from now, but I can't find it available for pre-order at the usual online stores.

I guess you have to notify them ahead of time, so I decided hey I'll subscribe to the Megazine so they'll get it, which starts at 302. And I managed to find a couple other sites which'll let me pre-order 301.

However, I can't find anyplace that'll get me 300. Anyone know? Thanks. I'm in the US, but I'd order from a site anywhere.

Games / Devil's Third
30 June, 2010, 11:32:24 PM
Here's the Devil's Third trailer

It's the new over-the-top action game by Itagaki, the guy who brought us Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive.

It looks pretty glorious, running on walls, shooting people to ribbons, slicing with katanas, all that fun stuff. I'm keeping an eye on this one.

General / Judge Dredd: The Lost Cases
26 August, 2009, 06:29:44 PM
I've seen this mentioned on here a couple times, but no real info on it. It's probably cool enough to deserve its own topic, I'm guessing. 8)

Anyone have some info on this Lost Cases thing? Where was it announced, does it have a release date, etc?

I was just reading the Dredd tale "A Real Xmas Story" from prog 502, wacky stuff.

It's the first Dredd story that I've noticed breaking the fourth wall, what with the narrator toying around and changing things magically in the story.

And of course, Dredd literally looks at us the reader and wishes us a Merry Christmas as well at the end.

Pretty odd, but definitely classic. Any other notable examples of this in Dredd or 2000AD in general?

Drokk it, I accidentally posted in the wrong subforum.

Ignore this... or, perhaps party instead?  :D

This topic can now be about how cool Max Normal is. The pinstripe freak really needs to make a comeback.

General / Judge Dredd trivia

Anyone game for some Judge Dredd trivia?

Whoever answers that, leave another question for the people. Or if you can't think of one, the next person can post one.  8-)

General / Judge Death: Nearly 5 years now... is it time?
02 February, 2009, 04:24:56 AM
So, you folks think it's time for Judge Death to make a return?

I like that he's used somewhat sparingly, it lets him keep his "edge". Personally, I can't get enough of the man.

I think five years or so is roughly the longest the gap has been between Death's appearances... the time has come.

Judge Dredd is the most zarjaz comic in the universe. The only comic legendary enough to make you sit back and read over 30 years worth of comics. Well, for me anyway. 8-)

Destiny's Angels (Progs 281 to 288). This is a classic Dredd story, very fun. I always love to see Mean Machine in action, one of the more lovable criminals in Mega City One. It also features the surprising return of the Judge Child, and his interactions with Mean are hilarious. Love this one. John Wager, Alan Grant, and Carlos Ezquerra... hell of a team!

Condo 3 (Progs 319 to 321). I love this, much like when Dredd faces off with Otto Sump, it's always fun to see Dredd stick it to a high-powered entrepreneur. Making their capitalistic endeavors hell with the law, the way Dredd should.

Cry of the Werewolf (Progs 322 to 328) 47 pages. This is a underrated gem, I'm a big fan of it. Great art again by Steve Dillon, and it features one of my favorite Dredd panels: Judge Dredd headbutting a werewolf.

The Graveyard Shift (Progs 335 to 341). Pretty much nonstop crime, really hammering in how relentless the job of Judging is. It ends with the first appearance of the Sleep Machine. After Dredd gets his 10 minutes of sleep, he's back on the street for the day shift. This really changed the way I looked at Dredd, because now he's literally shown as a man who's job never ends.

The Highwaymen (Prog 353). A great one shot, Dredd vs. the street pirates! With art by Steve Dillon? This is what it's all about. The Wagner/Grant team is really on fire at this point, they had great chemistry.

The Haunting of Sector House 9 (Progs 359 to 363). Fun stuff, featuring the psi-division. With art by Brett Ewins, another one of those great Dredd artists.

Dredd Angel (Progs 377 to 383). Pretty good Mean Machine / Judge Dredd odd couple adventure. I definitely preferred Destiny's Angels, but this is still a nice one.

The Judgement Trilogy (Progs 387 to 389). A very interesting threesome of stories. The first one doesn't really stand out on it's own, but it is interesting for showing Dredd questioning his judgement. The second one is a bit more memorable, with Dredd punching a subordinate in the face. The third chapter, A Case For Treatment, is a great one, really getting intro Dredd's head.

City of the Damned (Progs 393 to 406). This is a pretty good one, though it does have some weak spots in it. Dredd and Anderson team up, travel to the future, and face an enemy from their past one more time.
The Judge Child.
I enjoy it for the most part, the premise is very cool, but it could be a bit tighter. Always great to see Anderson.

JUDGE ANDERSON - Four Dark Judges (Progs 416 to 427). The first solo Judge Anderson comic! I'll be reviewing some of these in here too, they're definitely essential to the Dredd canon. The third appearance of Judge Death, and the second appearance of his crew The Dark Judges. I love it, the fun feel of menace you get from them. Reminiscent of Pinhead's gang in Hellraiser, or Freddy and Jason... I just get an 80's slasher movie feel from these guys. Wreaking havoc on the citizen's of Mega City One... truly awesome.  8-)

Midnight Surfer (Progs 424 to 429). This is an absolute classic. From Chopper's point of view, we get an incite into a former juve delinquent, trying to make something meaningful out of his life. At the SuperSurf 7! Very intense, touching, cool, and Judge Dredd is very imposing in his smaller role here. With great art from Cam Kennedy, I should point out.

Well, there we go. In the mid 80's, Dredd was pretty much nonstop greatness. The team of John Wagner and Alan Grant really gelled well here, and some great artists were contributing to the feel too. Classic Dredd.

What are your favorite 80s Dredd tales, folks?

General / The sleep machine...
25 October, 2008, 09:36:41 AM
When the sleep machine was first shown in the Dredd classic Cry of the Werewolf, I was quite impressed. Dredd was on the street for 36 hours, and now he schedules 10 minutes in the sleep machine, and then he's back on the streets!

I love it, how it shows Dredd as a force that is literally always on duty, except for 10 minutes every night or two.

That was the first appearance of the sleep machine, right? Though it's possible I missed an earlier appeance, especially if it was in an annual or special (I've missed quite a few of those).

The second appearance that I noticed of the sleep machine was in The Graveyard Shift.

It's interesting how little details like this really add a lot. Before, we'd assumed Dredd sleeps regularly in his apartment on Rowdy Yates block, like a regular human being. Now we know he's a crimestopping machine that virtually never stops.

General / Sentencing in Mega-City One?
22 October, 2008, 06:41:45 AM
So, is there a guide to sentencing in the big meg? I've seen Dredd give 20 years to perps for all sorts of crimes, from stealing a car to robbing someone. For killing a judge, the most odious crime, he sentenced them to life on a floating island thing. Sometimes he sentences people to time on Titan. And of course, for crimes against Mega City One, he'll sentence you to death.

I've seen illustrated guides to various things, anything like that published for sentences? Does the punishment fit the crime? What do you think, folks?  8-)

Prog / Judge Dredd: Progs 2 through 279 reviewed...
29 September, 2008, 09:34:58 AM
Judge Dredd. The man, the myth, the legend, the icon. The law! I've been re-reading all the Dredd stories from the beginning, and I'm considering giving a general review over the entire history of Dredd. Maybe I will, maybe not, but here we have the first step... Dredd: Progs 2 through 279!

Dredd is my favorite comic, and I'll always read it and appreciate it. That said, there have been a lot of Dredd strips over the years that I did not enjoy,  alongside the lot of good ones. This general review may seem somewhat incomprehensible, but bear with me here.

The early years of Dredd are a mixed bag, leaning on the negative side for me. We have a lot of classics, and also a lot of forgettable not-so-classics.

I like Dredd's first strip, Judge Whitey. It sets the tone, it paints the picture of Mega City One, and we know Dredd is the law.

Robot Wars is pretty fun, I've always been a fan of Walter the Wobot too. Return of Rico is a classic. Most of the strips up until The Cursed Earth, however, are bad. Just one note, boring filler.

Cursed Earth is a very fun read though, and easily the best thing in the Dredd strip at that time. Granted, it does have some silly stuff in the middle, such as Burger Wars.

Then we have The Day the Law Died! This is a mega classic. I love it, it works on every level. And man do I love Bolland's contributions to the art.

The quality of the strip goes up a bit at this point. We get interesting one shots like Punks Rule, and the touching Vienna. Vienna is really amazing, as it's the only time in the first couple hundred progs where we see Dredd show his human side. It's touching, and I find myself rereading that one from time to time.

Then we get some more forgettable filler, and finally... Judge Death! This is great stuff. Very cool, pretty straight forward, but done well. Judge Death is a great nemesis for Dredd.

Oh, and for the record, I found the entire time Dredd was a space Sheriff on the moon to be completely terrible. Just had to throw that in there.

Then we have the Judge Child epic, which is a major mixed bag. A lot of the stops on Dredd's space journey are just lame, in my view, and seem haphazardly thrown together. He finds a world of cavemen, fights some sort of evil wizard... what? That's a problem I have with a lot of the throwaway Dredd strips. They focus on some absurd thing, and add nothing to Dredd or his universe. And, worst of all, aren't even interesting stories in their own right.

However, all the stuff with the Angel Gang in this epic is great. The end of the epic is quite brilliant as well. All's well that ends well.

Then we have a lot more forgettable filler, and finally Judge Death Lives! Very cool, very enjoyable story. The Dark Judges are a lot of fun, and Anderson shines as well. Bolland rocks on the art, of course.

Some enjoyable stories I forgot to mention include the one about the graffiti kid, and the one where Dredd singlehandedly defeats a Sov battleship.

Boing is also hilarious, I love how Dredd handles an amusing problem in a very serious way. I also enjoyed it when Dredd was crazy for candy! Some of the comedy one shot strips are very good, even though I bash some of them.

Then we have some more forgettable stories. Here's my biggest complaint with all these throwaway stories between the big ones. They're usually written by John Wagner, or T.B. Grover as he was going by in those days. Does he have an "On/Off" switch for his writing? It's like, he has these great stories, then he fills the time between them with forgettable pap.

Now, I know this sounds harsh, but I do want to say Dredd is more consistently good than any other comic that has run as long. I enjoy Batman, for example, but I could never read 30 years of uninterrupted Batman comics. The fact that I can even do this with Dredd speaks volumes about it's quality.

Now here's one that gets me. Block Mania. It's a beloved story, a fan favorite... but I just don't get it. It gets pretty good towards the end, but the majority of it is pretty bland. Not much story going on, to speak of. The ending is cool though.

Then we have the Apocalypse War. A beloved Dredd classic, and yes, it is a good one. I have to say, I didn't enjoy it a much as The Day The Law Died though. Simply stated, the Apocalypse War is less plot or character driven than that epic. It's mostly just an escalating conflict, and we watch the fireworks. It's entertaining, and I like it, but I don't think it's the holy grail a lot of people say it is. Like most of those Dredd epics so far, it has a good premise, it has a great ending, but gets a bit weak in the middle.

Then we're back to lame filler land. The League of Fatties... oh man. I know the Fatties are fan favorites, but this strip is terrible. It pretty much is everything that is wrong with some of these Dredd strips defined. You have a one-note joke, and you base the entire story around it. Nothing interesting involving Dredd, or Mega City, or anything that adds to anything in anyway. Nor does the story have any merit, especially not as a comedy. Fat people fighting for the right to eat too much... there you have it.

Fungus was a great one though. We get to see some of the damage that the Apocalypse War has caused to Mega City, and we get an interesting story in its own right. The story of the former mayor who ended up a vagrant with a deadly infection, it worked for me on several levels. And Judge Dredd is great as always, as is McGruder! The ending is a triumph. This is Wagner and Grant doing something that entertains and says something. And of course, Carlos Ezquerra's art is fantastic.

How about The Game Show Show? I'm not interested in reading several pages about the life of a failed Game Show Host. Mega City recently got blown to hell and back during the Apocalypse War, how is the city doing? How about some interesting dilemma for Dredd to face? No, these pages are spent building up a lame character for no reason. I know with a weekly strip not every one can be genius, but it still is disappointing getting forgettable stuff like this from great writers.

I think Judge Dredd is the best comic of all time, but it certainly has had some rocky strips over the years. What's the point of this very large review? Well, I guess to point out that a time with a lot of beloved Dredd hits also had an equally large amount of misses.

Film & TV / Top 100 Movies of the 2000AD forums!
25 September, 2008, 05:33:25 AM
We can do this. Let's make an official top 100 movies list, voted by the posters on here. I'll do the task of counting everyone's posts to tally and update the list... until the end of time!

Simple system, post up to 10 movies that will count. To keep things simple, each movie on your list is worth 1 point, regardless of the position on your list. You can post less than 10 movies, or even just one movie, they're all worth 1 point each.

I'll add up everybody's lists. Oh, and if you want to change one of your movie choices at any time in the future, just make a new post listing which title you'd like to remove your vote from, and the new movie you'd like to add.

As for how to rank titles with the same number of votes, I'll rank the title that achieved that number first higher on the list.

Film & TV / True Blood
22 September, 2008, 09:00:44 AM
Anyone checking out True Blood, the latest TV show about vampires, starring a telepathic waitress?

It is very good, best show about vampires since Buffy or Angel. Not that there have been any good ones since then, but still, this show rocks.

General / Dredd's wife?
19 September, 2008, 11:42:08 AM
I know Dredd is prohibited from romantic relations as a Judge, so I was wondering about a line from this review.

//http://www.2000adreview.co.uk/reviews/megazine/2004/judge_dredd_megazine_226review.shtml

"While the idea is initially played for laughs, this swiftly descends into much darker territory, with Dredd going from asking his wife where his helmet is to handing out brutal beatings."

Now, I'm pretty behind on Dredd, and I've missed this issue in particular, so... what's the deal here?

General / PJ Maybe saga?
16 September, 2008, 09:59:18 AM
Hi, I was wondering what is the name of the saga that features PJ Maybe becoming
the mayor of Mega City
. And also, which issues it's published in?

Thanks, Dredd fans.  8-)

General / How's the Megazine lately?
16 September, 2008, 09:57:15 AM
I try to keep up with the 2000AD progs, but I haven't been keeping up with the Megazine much the last few years.

I'm primarily interested in Judge Dredd stuff, so my question is... how have the Megazines been of late? Are Dredd's stories solid? Are any of them important to know?

How's the continuity between prog and megazine stories these days?

Thanks.

General / 2000AD/Judge Dredd Megazine continuity?
09 October, 2007, 06:01:11 PM
I was wondering, how does continuity work between 2000AD and the Megazine?

In general, how long is it before events in the Megazine are part of 2000AD's storyline? Are some things in the Megazine just not recognised in 2000AD?

Also, what Megazine's have a large impact on 2000AD's Judge Dredd stories?

The reason I ask, is because I have a good ammount of 2000 AD, but a very sparse ammount of the Megazine.

General / Longest thrill ever?
26 September, 2007, 06:37:50 AM
What is the longest thrill in 2000AD history?

Seems to be Meltdown Man at 50 episodes. This might be considered cheating though. According to this site this appears to be the longest though.

Dredd's longest stories seem to be 26 progs, I can't think of any longer than that.

I think Strontium Dog's longest is Bitch, at 25 progs. ABC Warriors have The Black Hole with 21 episodes.

What's the verdict?
