General / Best cover, best line
23 July, 2003, 02:59:57 PM
So we've had the best cover competition, but what about the poor writers out there? What do you think the best every line or piece of dialouge in 2K was?

If you take even thirty seconds you'll realise that there are so many to choose from - lines or phrases that have stuck in my mind, anyway, for years. And that's despite sometimes only reading them once!

Zenith Phase I has a few classics in particular - how about:

"You didn't drop him, did you?" (when Zentih drops the Welsh bloke)

or

"We still have to deal with... THAT!" (upon seing the big baddie in all its glorious colour-back-page-ness).

But enough of that, what do you think the best line is? It could be a catch phrase (Crime is life, sentence is death) or just an apt expression (S'right).

If you're half way interested, post a line. If there's enough of a response I'll try and organise a Logan style head to head (hey, I can steal anyone's thunder) or other vote. If not, then... Kiss my axe!

Type the following into Google, then hit "I Feel Lucky". Then read closely (and, in the case of the second one, go for the alternative search).

First up:

"Weapons of mass destruction"

Second:

"French military victories"

I am planning to invest in a new, bespoke, PC in order to play Doom 3, Half Life 2 as well as a whole host of strategy games that won't work on my 5 year old PC just now.

Any tech-heads got an idea about an ideal spec? Money no object - I can always downgrade but want to know what is considered "top of the range" just now.

What about a graphics card? The last I knew it was all Vodoo, but they seem to have gone. Having done a bit of research I think its a toss up between a Radeon 9800 and a Geforce 5900. What's the best?

And what about AMD processors? Are they the same as or better than Intel?

And should I wait until 64 bit processors come out in the autumn? Or will it be a couple of years until they are stable enough - and cheap enough - to warrant buying?

I have been to the darkest place.
I have been in the pit of despair.
I have been in the maze.
I have been afraid for my sanity, and my wallet.
I have been miserable.
I have been to hell.
I have been to Ikea.

Off Topic / Harry Who?
16 June, 2003, 02:44:43 PM
Harry Potter's ok, but if you ask me the books are far from the first or best juve's tales that can be enjoyed by 'dults. This isn't a new phenomemen either. In addition to the Northern Lights triliogy, which is ok, there are some good books from the 70s and 80s out there which I'd suggest checking out if you are into this kind of thing.

My own suggestions for superior stories are:

The Dark is Rising Sequence (Slaine meets Finn in Wales, for children, by Susan Cooper. More coherence than Mr Mills)

Momo (shit scarey as a kid, drug addled wierdness as an adult. About Grey Men who steal time. By Michael Ende, who wrote Neverending Story)

The Half-Men of O (can't rememeber who wrote this)

Anything by Dahl.

Any others out there?

In an effort to continue the sexism here,

Purity Brown vs Durham Red

Cass Anderson vs Gallen De Marco

Who would you prefer? (To win)

The challengers from the first two bouts would then, bloddy but impeccably couiffoured, to the final. Who would win then?

General / Insurance

Have any of you insured your comics? I have a complete set of 2K, all the specials, all the annuals and all the original print anciallaries (eg poster progs, team ups), all the Complete Dredd/ Law in Order. Everything, in fact, other than the Best Ofs/ Eagle reprints.

I reckon this lot would cost over ?1500 to replace, which is the ceiling for notifying most UK home insurance companies about the collection. Given that they are kept in my loft they could be damaged by damp, rain coming through a hole, or a busrt pipe or water tank.

What do you think it would cost to replace them? Any idea who would value them? To have them insured, you need to have a valuation passed to the insurer.

I was re-reading The Day the Law Died last night. I don't have a scanner, but would like to point out that Fergee (especially in Prog 100) bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain "leader of the free world".

General / The Meg
03 June, 2003, 11:00:19 PM
Is it me, or is the Meg a bit pants these days. Perhaps it's suffering from being a monthly, or maybe it seems poor in comparison to the heady heights of 2K.

Even so, with the exception of Dredd, I can't think of a story in it I really like.

Black Siddha is bewildering oddness, but I don't want to single it out for criticism - it is indicative of the current level of the Meg.

Young Middenface is dull as dishwater; what next - young Max Normal/ Wulf/ other supporting character? This is insipid filler for me, down there with Soul Sisters (nice art though, even if it does make me pine for Luke Kirby)

Family is OK, I suppose - but can seem rushed.

Slaine is like a lot of stuff from the 80s (and I don't just mean comics) - better in the memory than in the cold light of day.

As for Darkie's Mob - well, it doesn't half go on. I know it was simpler back then, but Christ how many times can we have the same story?

THen there's Devlin Waugh. Great art, but what has actually happened in this story? Feck all! Episode 1 - infinity seems to involve some Julian Clary patter and folk being killed by vampires, before the vamps themselves are killed by Devlin. Ho hum - what a waste of a character! It's like Coronotion Street - you can miss an episode and pick it with the next one, safe in the knowledge that nothing has happened.

I know the Meg has to have reprint to survive, but I would rather have old Stronium Dogs from Starlord, old Eagle stuff (if Rebellion have the rights) or old Dredd summer special/ annual reprints (Last of the Bad Guys anyone, or the Dredd/ Alpha team up?).

As for original stories, what about something funny - Al's Baby style?

Could it be that too much focus is on the weekly, with not enough on the Meg? Why, for example, couldn't Lobster Random have been a Meg tale? He could've been a perp bust out a Cube.

Anyway, just thought I say what's been on my mind for a while.

I don't know if anyone has volunteered to be BB or set you a task, but if they haven't then I am up for the job (just now anyway) cos I have thought of a task based on the telly programme.

Your job, starting at noon GMT on Monday 26th May, is to start posting messages to a thread headed "BB TASK 1". These must be posted CONTINUALLY until noon GMT on noon GMT Thursday 29th May. There may be no more than 10 minutes between posts.

Any questions, post here.

You have until noon today to clarify the rules of the task.

Failure means I get one of the prizes.

I would suggest other non housemates are given the opprtunity to come up with future tasks, based on the ones on the programme, and that they get a prize if the task is failed.

Or else I'll stay BB.

Whaddya fink?

Off Topic / What's the plural of fez?
27 May, 2003, 03:37:40 PM
Just back from a long weekend and am avoiding working by having a splurge of posts. Anyway, as an adjunct to the crucial  "Monkey in a Hat Question" (never mind the Euro or a federal Europe, this board knows what's important) - can anyone tell me what the plural of fez is?

NB: for non-fez fans, the answer is not "a pile of crap" or anything similar.

Mon the Fez!

I don't understand the point of these endless threads where one person claims dominion over another. Surely it's just like that bit in Zenith Phase II where the Branson-a-lke complains about how hard it is to rule the world. I mean, who wants to rule the board? Not me. Just look at the people who live there!

I have my lab, my Manchurian slaves, my games consoles and the odd bit of dastardly scheming. That's enough for me.

Sure, I don't mind hiring my services out to those who have grander ambitions - witness my recent appointment as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Trout. That's because I prefer to be the evil genius behind or assisting the plotting and (in the event of a coup) the one who gets away.

All this can be done without sacrificing my priniples. I have never hailed any monarch on the board, nor do I intend to.

So, am I aiming too low?

Rather than work, I am faffing about on this board.

Anyway, don't laugh too much but what does "IIRC" mean? I've seen it on lots of posts but find it strange, confusing and slightly threatening.

Whatever happened to The Mess? I haven't got round to re-reading the original ABC Warriors, but remember that the Mess was a big green blob in a jar. Not much of a killer robot.

Oh, and why does the news insist on calling the whit chemical suits NBC suits (nuclear, biological and chemical)? Surely ABC is much better, and not an advert for an AMerican news channel?

Spread the word!

There was a thread a while ago about favourite MC1 hobbies. What about the clothes? There used to be loads of comedy clothes in Dredd, but that's fallen to the way side a bit.

What was your favourite?

I always thought kneepads were kind of cool. I might even change my board name to the Knee Pad Kid, if I can be bothered.
