07 December, 2023, 09:16:04 PM
My comp copies of this turned up today - publication day, no less! Having been delayed two years by Fiends featuring in the Ultimate Collection, it was nice to finally see this volume.

Contents:
Fiends of the Eastern Front [Prog 152-161], by Gerry Finley-Day & Carlos Ezquerra
Stalingrad [Judge Dredd Megazine 245-252], by David Bishop & Colin MacNeil
1812 [Prog 2100-2105], by Ian Edginton & Dave Taylor
Strange Meeting [2000 AD Sci-Fi Special 2019], by Guy Adams & Dave Kendall
Fodder [2000 AD Free Comic Book Day 2016], by Hannah Berry & DaNi

I'll leave it to others to review the book!

In case you haven't heard, Robbie Morrison's first novel is being published by Pan Macmillan on March 4th. Edge of the Grave is a crime thriller set in 1932 Glasgow, a city still recovering from the Great War; split by religious division and swarming with razor gangs.. Having read an advance copy I can say 2000 AD readers who enjoy Nikolai Dante or Shimura will savour every page!

There is a free online launch event on Thursday March 4th at 7.30pm in which Robbie will discuss his novel and career with former 2000 AD editor David Bishop. To sign up for the event email weethreeindies@gmail.com and they will send you the link the day before the event.

Warner Bros. is heading into space with "Dan Dare," closing a deal for the feature rights to the British property with Sam Worthington attached to star.
Basil Iwanyk ("Clash of the Titans") will produce through his Thunder Road banner.

"Dan Dare," created by Frank Hampson, first appeared as a comic in 1950 and centered on a gallant chief pilot of the Interplanet Space Fleet. Time frame was the 1990s and the complex adventures were set on planets presumed to have extraterrestrial life.

Dare, described as the British equivalent of Buck Rogers, also appeared in radio programs and a TV series, "Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future."

Rights were obtained from Dan Dare Inc. through Colin Frewin, who exec produces along with Dan Lin.

Worthington, who's been attached to "Dan Dare" for several months, recently wrapped "The Fields" for producer Michael Mann, and will next be seen in John Madden's "The Debt" opposite Helen Mirren. He also recently announced an imprint deal with Radical Publishing under which his Full Clip Prods. will create content for comicbooks and films.

WB-based Iwanyk is a producer on Ben Affleck's crime drama "The Town," due out in September., and "Clash of the Titans 2," with Worthington returning as the lead

Warner execs are Sarah Schechter, Ollie Madden and Matt Milam. Kent Cubena is overseeing for Thunder Road.

General / Question re Slick Dickens
19 February, 2009, 05:44:36 PM
Could somebody remind me what happened to Truman Kaput and Slick Dickens in Prog 2002? I believe that's the only reappearance of the character and his creator since Prog 505 - but I could well be wrong - and can't lay my hands on a copy.

Ta very much!

General / Whatever happened to Slick Dickens?
28 May, 2008, 10:22:20 AM
He first appeared not long after Prog 500, made a brief return in the Megazine during 1993 and another comeback in Prog 2002, IIRC.

So, what happened to fictional construct Slick Dickens and his creator Truman Kaput during the Prog 2002 tale? Have either reappeared since?

Help! / Just another Maniaa Monday
07 May, 2008, 05:01:42 PM
Does anyone recall a race of aliens from an early 2000 A.D. one-off strip, called the Maniaa? They were humanoid, with scaly faces and black hair.

I ask on behalf of a friend who's not sure if he dreamed this story, or whether it actually saw print...

Classifieds / Zenith collection for sale
17 July, 2007, 04:01:13 PM
As part of my ongoing quest to make cash and reclaim the floor of my office, I'm flogging a bunch of comics on eBay. First six issues of Diggle & Jock's Losers, original four-issue 1986 Dark Knight mini-series by Frank Miller, original five-issue 300 mini-series by Miller, a few other bits and bobs [Cerebus Number Zero gold ink logo with Dave Sim sketch inside, that kind of thing].

For 2000 AD readers, the best lot is 79 progs collecting every Grant Morrison & Steve Yeowell episode of Zenith. All four phases [incuding the never reprinted full colour Phase IV], the two interludes between Phases I & II, and zzzenith.com in Prog 2001.

The only Zenith stories missing were in annuals or specials, and didn't feature Yeowell artwork.

Bearing in mind the legal dispute that stymies efforts to reprint Zenith, this is golden opportunity to get all of Zenith in one lot.

Enough hype, here's the URL:

Help! / Hershey text story by Neil Gaiman?
22 June, 2007, 05:02:44 PM
Somebody put me out of my misery, please. Neil Gaiman wrote a Judge Hershey text story that appeared in either an annual or a special during the 1980s, but I can't find a mention of it in the online indexes. I know it exists, because it was updated and rerun in either a special or a yearbook I edited during the 1990s.

Can anybody tell me when and where it first appeared?

After the success of my last two eBay extravaganzas, I'm having another. This time all the lots are back issues of Battle including:

every 1978 issue [Major Eazy, loads of groovy stuff]
every 1979 issue [Charley's War begins]
most of 1980's issues
nearly every issue from 1981
and so on, right through BATTLE ACTION FORCE and even Battle Storm Force.
