After feeling rather chipper on a previous thread, I'm now feeling rather ojaah cum spiff, as i've figured out how to post my crappy scribblings online. So here goes, and let me know what youthink, good or bad...

First up is a picture of Paul Crocker, the characrter from Queen & Country, and was based on several sources:

Oh arse.

Something's gone wrong.

Let me have a look...

Byron Virgo

Okay, I'll be pissed if this doesn't work:

Huzzah!

Okay, so the following is the version based on the Leandro Fernandez cover to Queen & Country Operation Crystal Ball tpb:

The followin was based on an Eduardo Risso character (unfortuantely i can't remember what reference i used for this, so I don't have anything to show it in comparison to):

Nice pics, but the word very big does spring to mind- couldn't you have posted each pic separately, rather than posting them as one long reem(sp) ? I mean much as I enjoy the occasional glimpse of parts of your scanner, was it really nessacery?

Byron Virgo

Oh, well that was the bloody dodgy work scanner that I had to travel all the way there to use (as I'm off work today). Sorry about the size (s' not that big in real life). I would have made them smaller had i realised.

Ahhh, I've gone and bollixed it all up again, haven't I? Shit! Oh well, apologies again, but I am new to this sort of thing.

ADmnitt, and really wanted some responses as well. I think I'm a bit tired and emotional now.

I'm one of those types who always has to slavishly make things like facial detail stay within the little oval I use for a character's head, and I always get jealous when I see nice, loose pencilwork that effortlessly does exactly the oppisite to good effect.  Nice sketches, Byron.

Byron, do you do sequential stuff?

Cheers for the kind words of encouragement guys. To be honest, I've not ever really considered myself to have any kind of artistic ability whatsoever. I hadn't even picked up a pencil to draw since I left school until the beginning of this year. To be honest, after embarassing myself at school I was terrified of putting pencil to paper again.

However, I think I should point out that I was attemting to copy other peoples pictures, which does help a lot. I was quite plesed with the speed - the pencils only took about twenty to fourty minutes for each, although the inking took an hour or two (with spliff breaks).

As regards the oval thing: that's exactly what I used to try to do, and I tried to record exactly what I saw in front of me. I have now realised that this is practically impossible, and if you manage it, it looks like something a crazed monkey would draw. Much better to carricature and just represent the most prominant features in your own style. And don't worry about keeping things in the oval - after all, things don't in real life do they? My face juts and protrudes all over the plcae like Piccaso's worst nightmare.

As for drawing sequentially:
No, I haven't, but that's never stopped me before...

Two words: fan input.

As for worrying about not getting what you want on the page, whether you're copying from life, or drawing from memory, most artists, professional and amateur, will tell you that they are constantly disappointed with the gap between what they IMAGINE on the page and what they DRAW on the page.
Apart from anything else, it's making mistakes that helps individual art styles to develop.
