Awreet,

I've been off the message boards for a while now, how's everyone doing?

got a nagging question that needs an answer from the great and powerful hive mind...

What was the name of the 80's (BBC?) TV special which featured a working class (Cornish?) kid with black hair, who finds what he thinks is a real dragon, but it turns out to be a model of a dragon made by a special effects wiz. The actual effects were done by the Jim Henson Creature Shop IIRC...

does anyone else remember this or is it yet another sign of my fragile sanity slipping away?

General / 2000ad and the 'Establishment' (Maaaaan)
05 January, 2008, 01:50:41 AM
Been meaning to post this thought for a while, that Moorcock thread has re-energised me, so here we go...

Recent plans have necessitated the buying of new jumpers, so I was in Sainsbury's the other day, and I started thinking, 'What I really need is a lumberjack shirt.'

Which got me remeniscing about how they were really big for about a year or two in the late 80's- early 90's in the post-Goth pre-Greebo/Grunge days...

Which got me thinking about Tank Girl, then I realised...

Back in the day, so it is said, 2th was pretty anti-establishment, legend has it the creation of the Galaxy's Greatest, was fueled with a punkish energy, spitting in the face of the comics 'scene' of the time...

Fast forwward a bit and the sense of anarchy seemed to fade a little...

While Deadline was putting out stuff like Tank Girl, Milk and Cheese and Bugs & Drugs on a regular basis, things chez Tharg seemed a bit 'same old same old'...

So yeah, did 2000ad become the 'establishment'?
If so, when?
...And is it still?

Time for a heated debate...

I've Just this second strayed across this channel on sky(199) while I'm waiting for the repeat of Mighty Boosh.

It's currently showing Transformers Masterforce does anyone else know of this channel? Does it show good stuff? Is it worth me putting on my favourites?

I see Cowboy Bebop is on later, which is always good for a laugh...

Due to economic necessity I've recently found myself walking to work.

In order to cut down my travel time, I bought a skateboard yesterday.

Now according to the leaflet o top of the board, it's inadviseable for a novice to skate on wet or uneven terrain, on the pavement, or near busy roads, all of which I plan to do tomorrow morning.

Any advice? (If it's get a bike, bear in mind I've heard that from pretty much everyone I work with. Bikes are around £15 - £20, my board cost £7.99, economic necessity is the mother of crazy-ass ideas.)

Also, If I do get hit by a truck tomorrow, this could be the last anyone hears of me, nice knowing you.

Everyone in my family is getting comics this year wether they like it or not!

Not a problem for most, evfen my Dutch speaking Nephew is sorted (thanks e-bay!).

But what comic do you get for a Brother who's into Derrin Brown, Mark Thomas, Dave Gorman and Louis Theroux...

I'm thinking one of the Paradox 'Big Book...'s.

Any suggestions?

I've recently become hopelessly addicted to facebook, where a mildly interesting point came up.

What Accent would Johnny Alpa have?

I say Milton keynes, others disagree...

I never heard the big finish stuff, how did Simon Pegg play it?

does anyone other than me really care?

Help! / Swifty's Jacket
02 October, 2007, 10:00:32 PM
Not been around here for a while, but now I've gone all broadbandy, anyway I recently bought a cheap denim jacket, which I'm in the process of customising (Stonewashing at home, NOT a good idea unless you can afford a new washing machine...) Anyway I was wondering, Does anyone out there remember if Swifty from Sooner or Later had anything written on the back of his Jacket? I'd look it up myself, but a recent Comics-valance has left the back room inacsessable...

?Kay, here?s the thing, I?ll be starting a new job next week. A proper, long term, permanent thing, so I?m not going to have so much time to hang about here (Give it 6 months ?til I get bored/ fired/ Internet capable at home.)...

So yeah, when I started posting here regularly about six months back I?d been a grey since the turn of the millennium or thereabouts. So I never really did the ?New to the board thing??, but since that seems to be the norm these days perhaps this can redress the balance a little?

Anyway, as of next week, I?m not going to be round here so much, so I just thought I?d take the opportunity to say cheers. There?s been a lot of water under the bridge, some laughs, and a fair few  disagreements. But all in all, one way or another I?ve enjoyed the time I?ve spent here?

I?ve discovered the joys of wikipedia and youtube (although that?s probably better with sound?) and there have been a couple of invective diatribes followed by a therapeutic backlash/ response structure that saw me through some rough times?

Aaand well, for the time being at least, that?s all she wrote, pretty much. I know I?ve fallen out with a few of you, and there are others out there I barely know, but just so you know, it?s nothing personal, I?ve just had a change in circumstance?

Whatever, feel free to leave random abuse after the beep?

And now, the end is near?

Naah?

Now is the time to say goodbye,
Now is the time to yield a sigh?

Nope?

So long and thanks for all the fish,
So sad that it should come to this?

Nearly?

Well, it?s one blip, two blip, three blip go!
You?ll never blip my twenty ?til you lobe my diddio?

That?s more like it?

Film & TV / The Eidetic Memory of Dr. Jack
14 June, 2006, 06:44:49 PM
(Oooops, nearly forgot, possible spoilers, if you haven't seen the episode of Lost broadcast on C4 last night...)

Dr. Jack off Lost, does he have a photographic memory or what?

First (Or was it second?) episode this series he meets Desmond, and he instantly remembers who he is...

Last night, he meets Anna Lucia for only the second time ever in his entire life, ever, and what are the first words out of his mouth?

Not, "'Ere, aren't you that bird off that film? You ought to come doewn the beach and meet our Hobbit..."

Which would've been mine...

Also, how many more times are we going to see Shannon die? Should she be wearing an Orange parka?

Film & TV / Hoob evolution?
13 June, 2006, 07:06:14 PM
Ooops, Have I just double posted this? I hope not...

Aaanyway, taking a break from all the bile soaked diatribes...

I was watching the Hoobs this morning, as you do to slowly and fuzzily warm your brain up...

IIRC the question for Hoob news was:

'Will Grooves Peep tree ever get it's green leaves back?'

Which kind of implies the hoobs evolved on a planet without seasons, theoretically possible sure...

But, as I walked to the station I was still pondering, to my knowledge there are no lifeforms on this planet more complex than moss or litchen that aren't in some way effected by the seasons, most life on earth seems to base it's entire life cycle around them. (I'm not too sure about fish, I suspect my argument might fall down there, soggy bastards...)

So could an intellegent space faring race evolve in a wholly benevolent climate? or do we need those vicious winters to give us a kick up the evolutionary backside?

Have we become the dominant species on the planet in spite of the environment, or because of it?

it's nature versus nurture I guess...

Also, and most importantly as I had to leave the house before the end of the programme:

'Will Grooves Peep tree ever get it's green leaves back?'

Enquiring (Pre-school level) minds need to know...

Off Topic / Best and Worst...
01 June, 2006, 06:00:01 PM
Totally off topic, I've been meaning to post something to this effect since that episode of Green Wing. Who are the best and worst famous people you've ever been compared to..

I got the best worst compliment ever last night...

Standing by the bar, waiting for the band to come on, making small talk with Girl1, Girl2 says...

'Doesn't he look like Superman...'

Pause  just long enough to think 'Well, I do wear glasses' and she follows up with....

'You know, the wheelchair one?'

Cheers for that love :)...

Best, purely for it's surrealism, has got to be the time  I was heckled with 'OI! ELVIS!'

(That'd be the lesser known long hair eighties student throwback era Elvis...)

Website and Forum / Online comics?
30 May, 2006, 03:36:25 PM
So, I was wondering, since this is a website dedicated to a comic an' all, would a webcomic be a good idea? I know the Daily Star and Metro Dredds have had mixed receptions, and the longer strips seen in various Metal mags through the years might be too much work if they're renewed on a daily basis, but something like Droid Life might fit the bill perfectly...

Would this have any benifit attracting fresh new Squaxx?

Am I just rambling? (Probably...)

Should I shut up now and get some work done? (Almost definitely...)

Books & Comics / All TimeTop Ten British Comics?
23 May, 2006, 06:46:09 PM
I've just sopent all morning on this, if I've missed an html tag somewhere, I'm gonna be soooo pissed off...

?Kay, so I dipped into the Wizard Top 100 TPB?s freebie from Free Comic Book day for the first time last night. I got as far as the early forties and, guess what, nothing British?

Sure the gangs all there, the usual Moores, Morrisons, Gaimens, Gibbons, Dillons, McKeans and O?Neills are all represented, but only in terms of their US work?

So, that got me thinking about the best British comics, I?m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that we can and do produce work at least as good as Art Speigleman?s Maus But what would be the all time British top ten Collected Editions, Graphic Novels, TPB?s or whatever?

Contentious and contradictory at times, you?ll probably disagree with at least 90% of my choices but here?s what I came up with?

BUBBLING UNDER?
11a. VIZ: The Big Pink Stiff One
There?s more to British comics than 2000ad y?know, classic period Viz knocked out of the ten by a last minute recollection of Luther Arkwright?

11b. THE BOGIE MAN
Another one that should be in there somewhere, for the BBC TV movie tie in credentials if nothing else (Dispite the fact that it was shite...), but what do you knock out?

TOP 10?

10. Killing Time
I love this story, it?s one of my all time favourite comics of all time, I would place it higher, but I can?t fucking stand John Smith?

9. DANDY/ BEANO ? Famous Faces From the Comics
A heritage slot this one, ?cause it?s somewhat doubtful that any of the other titles would exist if the DC Thompson lads hadn?t got kids reading picture paper weeklies?

8. METALZOIC
Oooooh, isn?t this American? Published by DC? Well yeah, but it?s a Mills O?Neill collaboration, serialised in 2th, so I say it?s eligible for inclusion, if Harry Potter counts as a British film franchise, this is a British comic. Besides putting it in here shows the yanks that we can not only beat them at their own game, but we don?t have to exclude them from play to do it?

7. SKIZZ
One of my all time favourite Alan Moore tales, I would?ve placed it higher, but I recently re-read it, and found the Boys from the Blackstuffisms a little too blatant, still Cornelius could easily take Yosser Hughes in a fight?

6. THE ADVENTURES OF LUTHER ARKWRIGHT
I tried to squeeze this into the top 5 but I couldn?t justify shunting anything down, so I had to push Skizz back (And throw Viz out the back door, best place for it I hear you say?)

5. DAN DARE: VOYAGE TO VENUS part 1
Another heritage slot, I briefly considered the Rian Hughes/ Grant Morrison Dare, but this is the real deal?

4. CHARLEY?S WAR: 2 June-1 August 1916
Well, it had to be in here somewhere,  top work from Pat Mills when he was a great writer, and the art?
Oh?
My?
God?
How good is that?

3. DR & QUINCH?S TOTALLY AWESOME GUIDE TO LIFE
Better than Skizz Moore secures his place as the Woody Allen of comics, I prefer his early funny stuff?
The title of this collection is way better than the recent re-release too?

2. STRONTIUM DOG: Portrait of a Mutant
Well, I said I?d put some Wagner in here, I?ve kept him off the top spot, because contrary to what seems to be the popular belief? He. Is. Not. A. God?
It really hurts mind, mainly because I?m not sure my choice of replacement is worthy of more than the No. 2 spot?

1. NEMESIS THE WARLOCK: Death to all Aliens
I  know,  I?ve got waaay too much Mills here, and he probably doesn?t deserve the top spot (He probably wouldn?t?ve got it if he?d written this today?)  but, when he was on his game,  before his arse took on the odour of crushed laurels, ?wor Pat was good. In this edition, you get both the first two books so O?Neill and Redondo, better than

General / Badger Parade
10 May, 2006, 04:28:49 PM
I was thinking last night, didn't there used to be a regular annual 'Justice Day' or 'Judges Day' or summink, parade for the Justice Dept. to show off how much harder than the average Joe Cit they are?

was there a set date for this or did it just occur whenever JW thought of a parade based story?

Doesn't seem to've been one for a while, is that just because the story potential for a big full on Bells and Whistles parade is pretty much tapped out?

...And if you're here answering these questions Alan, who's grooming the Mantas?
