Dredd - yeah, nice story from Gordon again - I loved Lenny Zero for expanding the details of the MC1 organised crime scene (but then I love the Mega Rackets as well). Colebys art - brrrr.  Always thought Colebys art was one of the worst things to happen to 2000 (too blocky, distorted and sparse and much too inconsistent to hold together in the way McMahons art did), and the recent Rogue stuff didn't do much to dispell it.   However, this was a definite improvement - more detail, more of a consistent style - still not my favourite artist, but moving in the right direction. My only fear is that more Carlito (yes please) might mean Lenny's not coming back - say it aint so!

Family: I hated Asylum, not a fan of superpowers, but theres a lot more interest in this - the explanation of the superpowers is a little flimsy to say the least, but the whole idea of superpowers is fairly flimsy anyway!

Black Siddha has a touch of the Toxics about it -  familiar themes from Pat - but the art is attractive (much more background detail than usual from SB) and there are signs this could be an interesting trip from Mr Mills - definitely a wait and see-er.

I'm assuming that the Sin Dex is an unused strip from Metal Hammer?  Are these ongoing or just a 'waste not want not' exercise?  If the latter, then once you've done with the Sin Dex strips, bring on the Daily Star Dredds darn you!

Overall, a huge read, helped by more revelations from TPO (only two more - thats a shame - Presumably, next weeks cover the MIB takeover and the sex prog to name just a few weird and sometimes wonderful things from back then - Interesting times!)

Overall - a top read - the mix of strips has never been wider, but theres a common sense of purpose that seems to be pushing the Meg, and it makes all the difference

++No, no, no! Consume or don't consume, that's the only choice. If you don't like something, don't pay cash for it-save it for something you DO like.++

Totally agree with you, but it's got little to do with most of the boarders moans - they tend to be story specific, or possibly about the direction that the prog might be headed  - I doubt you'll find many (any?) posts from people saying they hate their progs - what would be the point of that?

People have a vested interest in not walking away - they like some the content, love some of it, and are perplexed and annoyed by some stuff as well.  As Slippo(?) said, the site's a good way to gauge if it's just you who hates a particular strip, and it's pros and cons - I don't see a great deal of unconstructive negativity - except perhaps where it's all been said before...

You made a good point about 2000 being like a mini version of the American comics industry, with 5 stories that would appear monthly in the USA appearing together weekly - I was only thinking about this the other day, and put in these terms 2000 does seem good value.  If you bought 5 issues of American comics a month, it would set you back, what? - more than a tenner? (not too sure as I dont buy them too often - around about ?2.00 each though, yes?).  The corresponding 2000AD costs you ?7.00, so advantage 2000AD, and I expect you get more story pages in an issue of 2000 than an average USA comic (again more guesswork).

That said, if you went into your local comic shop for an issue of Batman, and found that you had to purchase Spiderman, Thundercats, Preacher and Archie or they wouldn't serve you, you might be a bit miffed!

Of course, as you say, the Archie fans will also be buying the comics bundle, thus theoretically boosting sales, and thats a good thing. That shouldn't stop people expressing an opinion about the sort of stuff they would like to see (and expect not to see) in their prog.

If a prog turns up with 5 great thrills, then I'll defend it to the hilt (though thats rare at any point in 2000ADs history, even before prog 900!) :)

When  a prog has two or three great thrills, I'm fairly happy, though if the other stories don't appear to have any redeeming features, then I reserve the right to discuss it on a message board.

When the prog has only one story I'm really interested in (as is the case for me at the moment), then I'll be disappointed.

So should I stop reading?  As a subscriber, thats tricky, but even if I didnt subscribe, I wouldnt stop buying the prog until it improved (again, how to tell?), but because I want to support the comic that I know in the future will be (hopefully) coming up with the goods.  I'm afeared that if everyone stopped  buying the progs they didnt enjoy, there wouldnt be enough profit for 2000AD to go on creating the progs we do enjoy.

At the end of the day, the most important thing to bear in mind is that as consumers, we've the right to a: moan  or b: walk away.  Isnt there some spurious statistic that says over 90% of disatisfied customers just drop the product or service they are unhappy with rather than complain.

Complaints are healthy , so long as they give Tharg some kind of steer as to whats the problem is - so moaning (and credit were due) is scientifically proven to enhance thrillpower!

You can't beat a good moan - it's good for the soul.  And opinions are like assholes as the man once said, so why not follow 2000ADs lead and show the product of your critical bowels once in a while? Better out than in.

Obviously moaning here also means theres a chance that Tharg will see what we've written, realise we are all idiots and quite rightfully commission more thrilling installments of Sin Dex. Hurrah!

I think moaning about a story at least means you've had some value out of it - keeping schtumm doesnt really get you anywhere - OK, neither does moaning, but at least there's solidarity in our common moans  - moaners unite!

Heh - you know me too well PVS... Its the sort of thing I'd love to get hold of - wonder what its about - the background looks very much like the sceenshots we've seen from Rebellion - and the Dredd looks ten times better than the one that graced the cover of the Megazine a few months back...

Dredd vs Aliens:  Aliens won it seems, at least in terms of plot and mood - which is a shame as I like Dredd much more than I do Aliens - still nice art and good writing team - so why am I still vaguely disappointed that theres another 14 weeks of this.  Read on their own, these things are throwaway fun - as an ongoing weekly story, they just hog the schedules a bit IMO

Caballistics Inc:  Slighty LOEG vibe I'm getting from this, with disparate group of heroes and psychos being called together to fight dodgily realised monsters - Bok was scarier than those wingy things at the end, though the art is otherwise groovy.  Still, interesting enough so far.

Slaine:  Oh dear.  This weeks episode has a case of the deja vus... Evil Demons threaten humans, Slaine kills them....elsewhere evil demons threaten humans, Slaine kills them....elsewhere eveil demons threaten humans............Boring

Sin Dex: Oh dear.

Dante: Best of the bunch - Dante is the one story that has me wondering what might happen next week - though if every time we have a characters dramatic death, they just pop up, I'll be disappointed - Dante had better cop it permanently one of these days to excuse the number of "oooh is he dead?" moments we've seen from him -  and ViKtor better not suddenly turn up either

Overall, a disappointing start to the year

General / Best dialogue ever?
05 January, 2003, 01:51:52 AM
From Gene Hackman in Poseidon Adventure:

Priest: With sermons like that it's a wonder you're still an ordained priest.  Or are you?

Rev. Scott: The best kind! Angry, rebellious, critical - a renegade. Stripped of most of my so-called clerical powers. But I'm still in business!

The most unintentionally funny dialogue in movie history?
