It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, thrills in every store! Oooooooh, it's here, the highlight of the year, welcome to the eighth 2000AD advent calendar!!!
Last year, we kept this thread comment free and full of juicy Thrillpower so I'll start a new thread for comments here: https://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php?topic=43962.0 (https://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php?topic=43962.0)
Right! December 1st and this year I have decided to spare you my usual 'musical' extravaganza with awful Mackem singing, 2016 has been a shit enough year. This year I've gone all JJ Abrams and it's practical effects all the way, baby! So, without further ado, I proudly present...
TOY STORIES FROM MEZCO-CITY ONE: https://youtu.be/aVW811Je8s0 (https://youtu.be/aVW811Je8s0)
Thanks in advance to everybody who signed up to the calendar, I can't wait to see what you come up with! Also, a massive thanks to all the folks who've contributed to the board this year, you all make my day, even the ones who have tantrums over my art comp entries! Real life means I can't get on here as often as I'd like but I do try and catch up at least once a day.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GRUD BLESS US EVERYONE!

Another cracking day :) wonderful stuff from all so far, keep 'em coming so much love poured into endless hours of work!
Two small offerings from me todday. First up an exercise in copying a great artist with some remarkably therapeutic hand colouring done for Simon Belmont's Project Mekon sketchbook and presented here for the third day of Christmas.

And Christmas needs a spooky story so this is
Paying the Price
Dredd strode into the forensics lab and took up his usual position between the light and the Tek Judge who was waiting for him.
"Ah, Joseph, so glad you could join us. So rare to get a visit from a senior Judge."
"My time is limited, Quincy. No small talk, get to it."
"Of course. What can you tell me about the Testarossa murders?"
"Mid level crime family, thorn in our sides. Call from block security, seven bodies in their penthouse. Looks like they sat down for lunch and then decided to wipe each other out. No signs of any outside involvement."
"Sounds slightly unusual though. Whole family killing each other like that?"
"No honour among thieves, Quincy. Saved us the trouble."
Judge Quincy held up a Perspex box full of coins.
"And these were found at the scene?"
"Antique silver currency from the old world. Local pawnshop break-in the night before. Testarossas probably fought over them. No loose ends. Case closed."
"I did some digging. These coins have an interesting history. Pawnbroker got them from a widow, said she wouldn't have them in her con-apt after her husband killed himself. He bought them from a shady dealer known as Rattus."
"The Norwegian rat? Pulled him a few times. Some cube time, nothing major."
"Well the Rat met a Black Death of his own after selling them. Throat slashed. Went to Re-syk a few days ago."
"Violent death is an occupational hazard for perps like Rat."
"Indeed. And also for the last nine people to have owned the coins. All dead by suicide or violence shortly after acquiring them. This silver has left a trail of bodies in its wake."
"Alright, I'll bite. Tell me about the coins."
"This is were it gets interesting, Joseph. They're not just from the old world, they're really old. Over 2000 years to be precise. Ancient Rome, that's Caesar's head on them. I'm guessing they came up from one of the ruined museums in the underworld. Relic hunters venture down there and dodge the gangs long enough to bring back their fortunes. But something about these particular coins induces murder and suicide."
"So a bunch of low life's wipe each other out over some old treasure. They all have to count the cost eventually. Case closed."
"Wait, what did you say?"
"Case closed. I told you my time is limited."
"No, that's it, why didn't I see it sooner? Counting the cost. It's not what the coins are, it's how many of them there are."
"Grud-dammit, Q! Make your point."
"Grud damned is right, Dredd. There are thirty of these ancient Roman coins. Thirty pieces of silver. That ring any bells? Thirty pieces of silver that leave a trail of murder, betrayal and suicide in their wake."
"Hmmm. OK, I see what you're getting at. For the black museum then?"
"I think that would be wise, Joseph. I'll arrange for a suitable containment vessel first."
"Seal it. And then head straight to Psi division, same goes for anyone else who touched the coins. Take no chances, Quincy. Lock this one down tight."
Featuring Matthew Simpson and Kevin Horsham from the upcoming "Strontium Dog" film.

THE UNOFFICIAL ZOMBO'S CHRISTMAS CAPERS!
He's back, and this time it's Christmas! Zombo returns in this brand new completely unofficial game for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum! Now featuring 76% less game-breaking bugs than the first game in the series (http://malcolmkirk.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/zombo-for-zx-spectrum.html)!
What's that you say? You can't be bothered fiddling with emulators? Now you don't have to, as it comes bundled with a version that'll run on your PC without having to set anything up!
THE PLOTCenturies of overwork and stress have finally taken their toll - Santa™ has suffered a psychotic break and gone missing from his workshop in North Renfrewshire. The Government™ have tasked Zombo™ with tracking down Mr. Claus™ and retrieving the gifts for all the good little boys and girls™. Luckily, the naughty list is rather long these days, so he only needs to find a total of six presents.
GAMEPLAYYou must retrieve 6 presents and defeat the end of game baddy to win. Colour coded keys are scattered around, as are several other items, some of which are useful, others of which are not, but there's a Shootybang 2000™ somewhere which'll probably come in handy, (please bear in mind that the Shootybang 2000™ can only fire horizontally).

a version you can run straight away without setting anything up! Just extract the files, click on "
Zombo's Xmas Capers.bat", (or "
Capers.exe" in the 'PC' folder), and you'll be up and running. You can even use your favourite control pad by selecting 'Kempston' from the options. However, please note that this version does away with the loader, (but if you want to see what that looks like,

But that's not all! I've also updated the original Zombo game to include a new Mint Choc Chip flavour! What's that I hear you say again, (thus confirming I'm either psychic, insane, or have surreptitiously bugged your home)? What the hell am I talking about? I'll tell you what the hell I'm talking about... It now comes with a built in emulator just like Christmas Capers, and the 'teleportation'
bug feature has been removed for ease of play. How d'ya like
them artichokes?
The original Vanilla version is also still there for the masochistic among you.

A very small offering from me this year I'm afraid, and somewhat in the shadow of the great Mimikeke's entry, but...
Some of you may recall my Christmas window Easter egg comp a few years ago, where I submitted this as part of the puzzle : (http://rs143.pbsrc.com/albums/r153/brnwlsh/3.jpg?w=480&h=480&fit=clip)
The Dredd wrapping paper was the Easter egg here. Pete Wells in his compo entry said he wanted it. So I've modified it and made it real. Ask and thought shalt receive: It's yours, Pete: send me your current address and I'll send you a few sheets.
For everyone else, I'll raffle two more sets of sheets if you want them. Just Pm me your user name and I'll pick two out on Tuesday, then get the winners' names and addresses.
(Hope it's ok to give Wells special treatment here: This thread is his brainchild AFAIK, and I'd be gutted not to let him have what he asked for 2 years ago!)

So in 2011 the long-absent Dirk Van Dom enlisted me, Anthony Rothwell, Bhuna, Filip Roncone & Stephen Prestwood to do a five-part collabstravaganza entitled 'The Gift'. It was tremendously stressful and indescribably fun to whip up a single consistent narrative with four other artists. It's that uniquely collaborative creative spirit of the forum that keeps me coming back, keeps me standing by the art comp, keeps me moderately sane.
You can read The Gift here. (http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php?topic=34797.msg641373#msg641373)
This year we lost Stephen Prestwood. He was awe-inspiringly fast, producing more drawings a week than most manage in months. He was absurdly generous and would pour his time and mind into the small press, drawing jams, commissions, gifts... If you asked him, he'd do it and he'd love doing it. You wouldn't even have to ask. He'd already be on it. I was hollowed out by his loss - and felt the need to say something so I wrote an obituary for him for John Freeman's Down the Tubes (http://downthetubes.net/?p=31490) - I'd not intended it to be as long as it got but every collaborator revealed another, and another... each one glowing with praise for him and his energy. I'll never forget it as long as I live.
Back in 2011 when asked to do The Gift, Stephen approached it with characteristic enthusiasm and straight away whipped up a quick preliminary sketch on his trusty iPad. I found this recently and thought - "time for one last collaboration". Here's to you Stephen, and the board - and to encouraging each other to create year after year.

Time for some audio with episode 21 of the podcast recorded at last month's Thought Bubble convention especially for the advent calendar. Featuring a host of Tharg's droids and some well known Squaxx discussing their first progs.
Listen on your podcatcher or directly from the website here.

Fillipo and I would like to present to you a completed piece originally intended for this advent calendar about two years ago. Unfortunately difficult personal circumstances meant we couldn't finish it at the time.
However, we've been working hard this last week (particularly Fillipo) and can now show you the fruits of our labour - a snowy crossover of our favourite 2000AD and non-2000AD characters!

Here's my addition to the growing number of Calvin and Hobbes themed entries. This one more directly lifting from three of their first Christmas strips.

Thanks Hawkmumbler for swapping days, I was planning on the 24th but finished a bit earlier and he needed a bit more time so we swapped :)
Here's my contribution after being inspired by David Broughton's contributions last year and all other comics that have made their way here...
P.S thanks Mark thanks for the awesome script!
Enjoy it and merry xmas all!

Ah, another truly magnificent advent calendar begins to draw to a close and what a year it been! Film, games, wrapping papers, sculpture, podcasts, craft, cakes, stunning comic strips, tabloid journalism, Christmas decorations, scary ghost stories and glorious, glorious artwork! Thank you to you all, if only my choccy advent calendar was as exciting!
I believe a special mention must be made for Mr Andy Lambert who spoiled us continually with his utter brilliance - Merry Christmas you filthy drokker!
Christmas is a very busy time for the creator droids, as Tharg only allows them 30 seconds of downtime for Christmas before they have to start work again. I asked several if they could contribute and while many have looming deadlines, six fine droids have managed to send a little something. We may hear from more as the day goes on...
In order of receipt...
First, the glorious Jake Lynch sent this wonderful Harry Heston image. Genuinely hope you have a merry Christmas Jake!

Next up, the wonderful PJ Holden sent us this cheeky Dredd and Anderson image...

Karl Richardson took a break from the Dredd he's working on to bring us this beautifully festive image...

Superstar artist Chris Weston penned this jaw dropping Alpha picture...

While Colin MacNeil sent this lovely wee Dredd...

And finally (for now,) from the twisted mind of Dave Kendall, all of your darkest fears realised. I must warn readers of a nervous disposition that this image is disturbing to say the least...

A huge, huge thank you to everyone who has contributed this year, both pro and novice alike. Have a very, very merry Christmas everyone!

JUDGE DREDD, THE MUSICAL! PUTTING THE 'LA' IN 'LAW!'*
*Sorry. (I think they'd had a bit too much to drink actually. The chap in the middle has his badge on sideways, and the one on the left looks completely gonzoed.)

While I'm trying to letter the last strips in this stupidly overambitious project, here's a present for you from Ro-Ho-Ho-Hogue Trooper (aka my son). Luckily he didn't find you on his "Norty" list!
Rogue vs Dredd
Created in Stick Notes by Dash Jr (aka Ben).
PS "Bloo man" is what Ben used to call Rogue when he was little. It's an in-joke not a typo.
PPS Ben says Dredd loses his glove not his hand, that's why he can still fire right-handed. I just think it's because Dredd's dead tough! "Fingers? Who needs fingers?"

This came to us as a try-out for David, and I was so pleased to see such a different interpretation of the script.
