London has a massive undercity too - there are disused Victorian sewers underneath most of the tube lines, including the deep ones. The sewers have housing blocks in them, originally for the navvies who built them.

Interesting snippet as to how I know...

During WW2 my grandfather worked for the GPO (original BT). Whenever there was a bomb blast during the blitz, this would sever the cables for the phones. His job was to travel to the location of a blast, find the severed end of a phone cable at the crater, splice in a new one and then trail it into the Victorian sewers (under the damage) and connect the lines back up.

That way, telecommunications could be maintained throughout the city despite the blitz.

He died in March aged 95 - but was full of fascinating sotories. He also lived from the age of 8 with only one kidney.

Hope I have his genes!
